We sometimes hear that ours is a material, dull age, yet we perpetuate terms and usages which ally us to the childhood of the human race, and which stand for imagination and sheer loveliness. We still speak of laureled brows, palms of victory, the rose of beauty, the lily of purity, the oak of strength, willowy grace, fig-trees of shelter, and corn of abundance; we extend the olive-branch of peace, we put our legs under our host's mahogany, we indicate poison by nightshade and toadstools, and health by flowers and fruits. Though Bacchus is no longer with us, we emblemize him in our reference to the vine. Moreover, states and nations choose their flowers, and certain Scottish Highlanders still wear them as badges of their clans. The liking for these things, their service to the eye, antedates history, and although Shakespeare lived when there was no botany, and only an enjoyment of nature in place of the study of it, his chance mention of one hundred fifty trees and plants hints at the regard such matters enjoyed in those days.

Dangerous Towns.......2002-06-14

30 Great Cities To Start Out In, written by Sandra Gurvis is completely insane. It is totally off. Chicago? What was she thinking! Living in Chicago is dangerous. Robbers and murderers are found throughout the city. It's a senseless place to live. Some of the cities that she chose to include are horrible, dirty places. Yet some of the other cities she included were above average cities that young people could not afford to live in. I think her book was only written and published, strictly to make money and that's it. -Thank You

Cool book to get your young-person-with-the-world-ahead-of-her juices flowing. Sometimes practical, other times not. But the only book of its kind I could locate.

inconsistent from city to city.......2000-10-23

Overall this was an interesting book. The author covered some cities very well in terms of the social scene for young people, what it's like for transplants, etc. But for other cities, I got the sense that she didn't do much more than read visitors' guides and articles. Portland, Oregon, is a good example, as I was particularly interested in finding out what it's like there for singles. But she didn't touch on the singles scene at all. In fact, reading it, I didn't get the impression she had even gone there or sought out people to interview. Her main observations came from a guy she quoted from an article about Portland. I hope she'll revise this book and fill in the gaps more.

Good book,with one criticism.......2000-03-26

I thought this book was pretty good.So good,that I've checked it out of the library at least 10 times over the last couple of years it's been published.The only problem that I have with the book is that it doesn't cover enough on the ethnic/cultural prospects of cities.And she doesn't give the positives and negatives of cities from a minority view like I felt she should have.One African American man said Minneapolis was "progressive" in terms of race relations,but I know of many people who won't hesitate to call it the worst place in the country for African Americans and other minorities.I wish she would've given two sides to every story.It doesn't seem as if she spent much time in minority communities.I also felt that there was a lot of homeless bashing by some of the respondents.I just wish that she would revise this book soon,because,overall,it's a VERY good read.

Fascinating,yet practical and concise.Touches on all topics.......1998-07-28

I am twenty-eight and find this book to be a very interesting read. It does a good job in providing a demographic/geographic overview. So far, it has been somewhat useful in taking a closer look at a couple of areas I've been considering. The only things lacking are a way to contact the author and more in-depth information on socioeconomic aspects and reference/source contact information. Overall this book was a good guidance investment.

11-year old spa-finder not much of a guide.......2001-04-20

I should have noticed the 1990 publication date, but I didn't. It was only after I used the great system for identifying the right spa for me, that I realized how badly outdated this book is. At least three of the recommended spas are nowhere to be found, apparetnly out of business. And of course the pricing and program information is way, way out of date.Some prices are now double those in the book and I found four spas who have radically revised their programs. To top it all off, the cover touts "Thousands of dollars in free coupons for your next spa visit!" The "coupons" look really questionable, and you'd have to spend many thousands at many different resorts in at least six different states to use them all.

The celibate priest will make most fathers feel guilty........1999-10-09

This is an absolutely heart warming book. It is easy to read, and better yet, to understand. The way that the priest takes you through each occurence with jorge makes you feel a part of it. He shows his genuine love and affection for the boy,and puts this particular father of 4 to shame with his willingness to go to any lengths for the young man. The reciprocal love expressed by jorge, might be typical of a teenager, but not always in the form that the parent understands or appreciates fully. It is hard to put the book down and you will totally enjoy the year the priest and the exchange student spent together.

Very revealing tale........2000-04-05

This book describes the complete story of the incident that started the Soviet Aliya. The people accused of attempting to hijack a Soviet airplane became notorious in the dissident movemnet. However, the evens that took place were never made kown to the public until this book was published (as far as I know). I read this book in Russian, and it is fascinating. I don't know how well it reads in the English translation.
