Meet Martin Luther King, Jr. Landmark Books, by James T. De Kay
104 pages, Biography
Meet Martin Luther King, was a very interesting book. I know that this book has been used by the Princeton Review to help teach nonreaders to read. While the topic is great and the effort is even better, I feel that this may not be the best book for such an important activity. The book is clearly stated as being for a fourth grade audience; however the sentence structure is more along the line of a pre-school level. The use of punctuation is horrible and just flat out wrong. I don't know if a comma was used in the entire book. I just know that if I had a fourth grade son or daughter, or a high school senior for that matter, I would prefer they learn sentence structure and language a bit better than this book portrays.
As previously mentioned the ideas portrayed in this book are wonderful. The struggles that were going on at the time are exemplified through the great efforts of Martin Luther's life long battles to help eliminate discrimination. The portrayal of the life of Dr. King, while shown through a fine lined pen, is very useful in illustrating the major points of his life. I feel the purpose of the book is met, and the story is told. Also, the fact that the book is readable to a fourth grader is helpful in teaching the nonreaders of our country.
Depending on your purpose as a reader this may or may not be the book for you. It is a one sided illustration of the life and a poor level of writing at the same time. I would hope that there are better and more complete illustrations of Martin Luther King Juniors' life.
WOW! I can't believe what my child learned........2001-08-05
We have read a lot of biographies, but this one was different. I don't really know why. My son, 6, was captivated by this book. He now devours EVERYTHING he hears about Martin Luther King, Jr. My son learned about a man like himself in many ways who experienced difficulties and fought unfair laws just because of his color. He also learned about a man named Gandhi and the influence he had on Dr. King. I was so impressed by the impression that this book made on my son. And he recognized scenes from the book when we watched the movie "KING." Rarely does any book have this much impact on a young child. It definitely deserves 5 stars.
Great Bio for Kids.......2000-08-18
This is the perfect biography for kids around 8-12 years old to read. It has lots of information and is a little more advanced than a Martin Luther King biography you would find in a first grade classroom would be.This would also be a great book to read if a child has to do a report.

Another Great Book by Dorothy Kamm.......2004-08-02
Wow, what an informative, helpful book if you have any interest in vintage jewelry or hand-painted porcelain. Wish I had some of the pieces featured here....
Honest review:.......2002-02-24
I read the reviews on this book prior to purchasing it. I also noted the reference to another book: LIVING WITH LIMOGES and I purchased it. Of course I compared the two. LIVING WITH LIMOGES is FANTASTIC and has an entire section on WEARING YOUR LIMOGES that is informative, professional and has fabulous photographs of thousands of hand painted pieces. The quality of Living With Limoges is much better than this book Painted Porcelain. I personally don't like paperback books and Painted Porcelain is a paperback. I thought I would enjoy both but my recommendation - don't bother spending the money on paperback reference books -- put your money toward the better book.
Recommend!.......2002-01-13
I love this book!! I also love Debby DuBay's book: LIVING WITH LIMOGES! Both authors "brooch" the subject of hand painted jewelry, buttons, brooches, hat pins, etc.!! A must for the collector.
Soft Cover Book.......2002-01-12
The author has a wealth of information! (Too bad the publishing company made this a poor quality product, and a soft cover book. No justice to the content!)I love hand painted buttons and brooches and received this book and LIVING WITH LIMOGES which has a section on such, over the holidays. The two books have provided me with much information.
Pairs gorgeous large color photos with a value guide.......2001-12-08
Dorothy Kamm's Painted Porcelain Jewelry And Buttons pairs gorgeous large color photos with a value guide to painted buttons and jewelry. The primarily-floral designs are gorgeous and are accompanied by the latest values.

Book Description
Plants can be flamboyant and voluptuous, funny and frivolous, even shy and retiring, but do they really have personalities? In this book, Klein demonstrates how understanding plants' needs and providing the appropriate conditions enables them to develop their true characters---the qualities that make them what they are. Personality traits can be as valuable as height, habit, and flower color when choosing your plants. Some plants are good natured, contributing to the overall landscape for months, while others are fleeting, grabbing the spotlight for a brief but breathtaking display. Still others lend a sense of frivolity or sensuality to the garden. Illustrated with superb photographs, Plant Personalities will inspire any gardener to see the unique character in every plant.

Five stars as a gift; far fewer as a practical guide.......2005-05-04
First, I think this would be a marvelous gift for a gardener. The color photos are lush and lovely as the plants themselves and the text entertains -- at least, it would entertain gardeners.
Unfortunately for me, I picked up this book because I thought it would contain more than the generalizations (prickly customers, drama queens, and seductive sophisticates) of the categories. You can see the problem immediately: one gardener's "dainty and detailed" is another's "gatecrasher". This is an interesting idea to play with and the close-up photos provide an opportunity to get to know a number of plants (though you should not expect anything very exotic here), but I think the book was not intended to be deep in information and, indeed, it is not. If one were to say that this is a "novel" approach, by contrast I might say that although I am happy to receive such things as gifts, I prefer to spend my own money on books that are more like textbooks or references.
As usual, Timber Press has published a sturdy book that should hold up well. The binding is tight and the format itself is not so large as to endanger the binding.
Three stars, then, which I am quite willing to have read as a metric of my own rather stodgy and bookish gardening personality.

The artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude have famously tied up Berlin's Reichstag with miles of silvery fabric, wrapped the Pont Neuf in Paris, and circled the islands in Biscayne Bay with flamingo pink fabric. Each project may only be on view a short time, but each is the result of years of planning, scouting, wrangling with local permitting agencies, and documenting the whole process. The sale of drawings and notes finances the enterprise. The Umbrellas: Japan-USA contains two volumes of documentation for a project to install and then open 3,100 umbrellas (nearly 20 feet high and over 28 feet wide when unfurled) in two countries in the fall of 1991. Volume one is filled with maps, sketches, diagrams of the specially designed umbrellas, and black-and-white photographs of the artists on location meeting with officials and landowners whose property would be used for the installation. In volume two, the project comes to gorgeous fruition. Hundreds of color photographs of azure blue umbrellas in Japan and sunflower yellow ones in California fill the book. (Full-page swatches of the actual fabric show the intensity of the colors.) We begin to understand the monumental scope of the project in photographs taken from all angles: aerial shots with a long view, views from underneath, forests of umbrellas in rice paddies and running for miles along the California highway. Only 2,500 copies of this special collector's edition exist, each signed and numbered by the artists.
From the Publisher
"Who's gonna stop the rain from complaining...?" lyricist Hal David asked. Christo and Jeanne-Claude's Umbrella Project in 1991 was the most ambitious and expensive project they have ever undertaken.
1340 blue six-metre umbrellas were assembled and erected throughout a narrow valley in rural Japan. 7000 yellow umbrellas were similarly prepared across the Pacific in a dry expanse of Californian land. After months of gruelling process, the two countries united as the forest of umbrellas were opened simultaneously on both continents. The blue symbolised the plentitude of water in the Japanese terrain, and the yellow represented the heat of the American valley. For Christo the umbrellas were "freestanding, dynamic modules... which reflected the availability of the land in each valley, creating an invitational, inner space."
The umbrellas were removed after two weeks, but the memories of this unrepeatable and transient endeavour have now been collected in this official book of documentation designed by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Thousands of photographs, plans, sketches, notes and a retrospective text provide the core source material, covering every stage of the project from inception to aftermath. A very special edition indeed.
Book Description
When Hitler invaded Warsaw in the fall of 1939, hundreds of thousands of civilians—many of them Jewish—were trapped in the besieged city. The Rebbe Joseph Schneersohn, the leader of the ultra-orthodox Lubavitcher Jews, was among them. Followers throughout the world were filled with anguish, unable to confirm whether he was alive or dead. Working with officials in the United States government, a group of American Jews initiated what would ultimately become one of the strangest—and most miraculous—rescues of World War II.
The escape of Rebbe Schneersohn from Warsaw has been the subject of speculation for decades. Historian Bryan Mark Rigg has now uncovered the true story of the rescue, which was propelled by a secret collaboration between American officials and leaders of German military intelligence. Amid the fog of war, a small group of dedicated German soldiers located the Rebbe and protected him from suspicious Nazis as they fled the city together. During the course of the mission, the Rebbe learned the shocking truth about the leader of the rescue operation, the decorated Wehrmacht soldier Ernst Bloch: he was himself half-Jewish, and a victim of the rising tide of German antisemitism.
A harrowing story about identity and moral responsibility, Rescued from the Reich is also a riveting narrative history of one of the most extraordinary rescue missions of World War II.
Customer Reviews:
Reads like a (great) doctoral dissertation.......2006-08-09
While this book is exceptionally well researched it lacks the mystery and complexity that would make it more entertaining. That is not to say that it should have been or could have been more "exciting," only that it reads more like a history book than something you might pick up for a quick weekend read (which it was for me). Rigg provides excellent linearity and reviews the different individuals so the reader stays connected. The excellent historical account of Chabad and the Lubivitchers really stand out. In addition, Rigg devotes the longest chapter to the moral decisions of the Rebbe to "rescue" secular and non-orthodox Jews in the U.S. rather than those facing death in Europe. Though an important point, it was made in a few paragraphs and then became quite redundant over the next 30 pages or so. I got the feeling that the editors simply wanted more words to make a longer book, regardless of their substance. Though a remarkable account filled with amazing events, this is a book to check out of the library and read quickly.
an engrossing book.......2006-03-09
this will hold your attention and is an unusual story of how both germans and jews conspired to save a holy man. it makes one realize that such rescues were possible if only people were willing to make the effort and take the risk. it also highlights how some individual high in the nazi regime were against the persecution and destruction of the jewish people.
Beyond belief.......2005-11-08
Dr. Rigg's first book, Hitler's Jewish Soldiers, gave a careful and balanced scholarly account of those 150,000 part-Jewish soliders in the Germany military of WWII. ONe of the most amazing things I have ever encountered. He outdid himself with this follow up. Who could believe that in 1939 the U.S. State Dept. could partner with a Nazi intellignece agency to secretly rescue the rebbe from occupied, war torn Poland? The complications were staggering -- if the Nazi intelligence agents were discovered by the other Nazi agencies they would have been executed. The rebbe was mystical and eccentric and was a VERY difficult man to hide and smuggle.
Riggs can be a little long-winded at times, but overall he relaly knows how to tell a story well. This really should be made into a film soon.
Another Great Book From Bryan Rigg.......2005-07-26
I was quite excited to receive my copy of "Rescued from the Reich". From his first book, "Hitler's Jewish Soldiers..." I knew I could expect a well-researched and documented book on an obscure but important topic concerning the Third Reich, one of my own major interests.
Dr. Rigg has outdone himself. While his first book was occasionally slow-moving (growing out of a doctoral dissertation), "Rescued from the Reich" is both well-documented and shows evolution of Dr. Rigg's historical narrative style, making it more of a page-turner or page-burner, which adds a great deal to a book of this type. Also, now fully-fledged a professional historian, I think I see Dr. Rigg willing to make more speculations, which increase the readability of this work.
Who could believe it? An Abwehr officer, half-Jewish, sent to Warsaw in the middle of the bombing of Poland to rescue the Rebbe of the Lubavitch sect from the German advance and the eventual Final Solution? It is not only believeable, but of course true--and in that sense, a political thriller. In "Der Untergang", a film growing out of the novel of the same name, we see Heinrich Himmler encouraging his Fuehrer even in the last dark days of the Reich, while Berlin is being shelled, to consider "making politics" (Politik machen) with the Western Allies.
I think Admiral Canaris and Major Ernst Bloch, responding to a request from Washington, were doing the same--making politics, with an eye toward the disastrous future for Germany. Only in such a way could such a mission be justified by the Abwehr--the German CIA, which trumped even the Gestapo (inner Germany secret police, analagous to the FBI).
I cannot recommend this historial work more highly--to anyone interested in the evolution of the Third Reich, WW2, the Holocaust, and intelligence matters. Great effort, Dr. Rigg!
Unbelievable Story.......2005-01-12
Rescued From The Reich, by Bryan Mark Rigg, is the very well researched, well written story of how the leader of the ultra-Orthodox Lubavitcher Jews, Rebbe Joseph Schneersohn, members of his family, and some close associates were rescued from war torn Warsaw, with the help of some American officials, dedicated American Jews, and, believe it or not, a small group of German soldiers ably led by half Jew Ernst Bloch, a dedicated, professional soldier. Bloch, whose application for Aryanization had been approved by Hitler himself, was a decorated soldier, who was working under the direction of Admiral Canaris, the head of the Abwehr. He and a small group of other half Jewish soldiers were able to take the Rebbe and his group from Warsaw, through Berlin, to the Latvian border where they awaited the next leg of an amazing journey that would eventually lead them to America. While all of this was taking place two very dedicated lawyers in the United States were trying to work through the anti-semitism of the State Department in order to arrange the necessary visas. Along the way, the assistance of some very powerful members of the government is enlisted. A very interesting and remarkable, yet probably mostly unknown story of WWII that is definitely worth reading.
