Book Description
Where Vacations Meet Adventures! First, Hidden Kauai reviews the destination’s famed attractions. Then (more importantly!) it invites the reader to go further to “Hidden” spots other guides overlook, including small inns and local restaurants. The guide also focuses on outdoor adventures with detailed information on beaches, parks, and outdoor activities. Special traveler-friendly features include hidden spots, author’s favorite picks, getaway itineraries, driving and walking tours, websites and e-mail addresses, and multiple scaled maps that zoom in on each area. Hidden Kauai leads to tropical ocean vistas in Hanalei, Hawaiian eateries in Lihue, and diving spots off Poipu. The author offers recommendations and opinionated reviews for over 85 restaurants and over 85 hotels and condos. This updated edition includes 7 maps.

I just wish there could have been more beaches and detail. I found more places I wanted to swim just by looking at the big map I had along. Compared to all the other books for this island this one, for the money, is the thinnest with the least information.
Princeville didn't strike me as being very Hawaiian. It was a manicured housing development.

Excellent chapters on death, dying, and bereavement.......2004-08-04
I am a professional counselor and I facilitate animal/pet bereavement groups for adults and children who have lost their animal companion. I found this book and Penelope Smith's take on animals passing on to another plane most helpful in the use of my practice, particularly when it comes to regrets regarding their death. So many people are not aware that sometimes our animal companions are ready to pass on and do not want to remain in their current form any longer. Penelope also has a wonderful discussion on whether to eat meat, or any type of food for that matter, and how there is an agreement within nature regarding the food chain and the willingness of animal and plant life to give up their life for another to live. It is just a matter of nature, all we need to do is respect and honor each being on this planet and treat them with dignity. This is an excellent book that is still current even today. Penelope's love and compassion really shines through.
A breathtaking experience!.......1999-01-16
This book is a breathtaking experience! It is well written and gives us account of the steps we can move up to our return of wholiness! A very grateful emotion for me and friends I have recommended it. But, as I live in Brazil and many people do not read English, I would like to know if there is the Portuguese translation...

simple read, very informative.......2002-02-15
great book for those who want to know more about their machines. has helpful step by step instructions on how to repair the wood and metals of the phonograph. has washed out b/w photos that could have been color. but overall, this book is helpful for those who want to repair their machines and want to learn a little history behind phonographs as well. good low price for this valuable information.
Great info, good writer.......1999-12-15
The Compleat Talking Machine is not only a great resource for people interested in restoring old phonographs, it's also a good read -- Eric comes across as a real person with a sense of humor. He keeps his repair information and instructions general for the most part -- you may need to interpolate his instructions depending on the model of phono you have. Read carefully!
Excellent, but watch focus on table models, few floor models.......1999-08-07
An excellent reference with great bibliography -but one warning - it focuses strongly on "table" model phonographs - has few pictures of upright floor cabinets. However it led me to buy a number of additional references to identify British machines.
Great for restorers.......1999-06-15
I am a great fan of technical how-to books, and this is one of the most informative, well written books on the subject of phonograph restoration that there is. It covers disc phonographs, as well as cylinder phonographs. It covers too many topics to relate here. You will be impressed.
Book Description
This book focuses on plants in the daisy family (Asteraceae), nearly all of which have the characteristic daisylike appearance found in the lawn daisy (Bellis perennis). These plants are valuable members of the herbaceous border, with genera like Rudbeckia, Gazania, and Osteospermum already enjoying great popularity. The distinctive, rounded daisy shape acts as a useful foil to plants with more upright forms, and the precision of the individual florets contrasts well with small-flowered plants that lack definition. The genus-to-genus variations on the daisy flower head are illustrated by high-quality photographs taken both outdoors and inside the studio, and the author provides exactly the information gardeners will need as this plant group continues to grow in importance. Chapters focus on such key issues as the daisy's history, contribution to gardens, botany, and propagation. The book's centerpiece is an extensive A-Z of genera, species, and varieties.

For anyone interested in raising a garden with daisies.......2001-09-11
John Sutton's The Plantfinder's Guide To Daisies is a well-rounded compendium of one of the most popular and well-known garden plants. Horticulturalist John Sutton not only offers the reader extensive information on the history, botany, and propagation of the varieties of daisies, from sunflowers to dahlias to annuals, but also many tidbits and subtle details especially useful to gardeners - such as variations of flower head and foliage, and which daisies make especially good cut flowers. The Plantfinder's Guide To Daisies is enthusiastically recommended for anyone interested in raising a flower garden with daisies.

A good read about a not nice guy.......2000-04-26
Hammond is not a nice guy. He married for money, was not a great father, and campagined for elected office at time when no one else did and against the 'party' candidate to boot. Most interesting of all was his commitment to the Confederate cause but resistance to the call for material and manpower to help the cause. In the end, he could not believe it when his slaves were jubilant about the prospect of freedom. Through Hammond's eyes we see the south changed forever by the Civil War, not only due to the lost of their slaves but also by the unsouthern actions the Confederate government had to take and how they affected the southern way of life. Hammond is not a nice guy but this very readable book provides an excellent insight to the antebellum southern mind.

Forgotten Heritage-Thankfully no longer forgotten........2000-06-19
The authors and contributors to this book worked deep in the fine details of Houston's past. So much of it has been lost to the ages, but with Houston's Forgotten Heritage, it almost comes back to life through the fine photographs of the opulent homes and even the log cabins. It is a joy to show this book to many of my "old-timer" neighbors, who remember a building here and there, and even the old fixtures, appliances, and ways of life. We should all be grateful to the authors of this book for reminding us of our glorious past.

Book Description
The most important Jewish center in the western hemisphere during the eighteenth century was "the great colony" - Surinam. There, Jews formed perhaps the most privileged Jewish community in the world. They were often plantation and slave owners, as well as a sizeable proportion of the white population. They had their own village, with extensive autonomous rights. This book is a study of the impact of environment on Jewish life in a colonial society. It analyzes the impact of environment upon migratory patterns, health and mortality, economic structures, intellectual life, and communal dynamics. Following the methods of social history, this book uses an interdisciplinary approach to examine the impact of environment upon the modification of traditional values and modes of behavior. This is the first full-length monograph on Surinamese Jewry to appear in two hundred years. The first one, the Historical Essay of David Nassy, treated Jewish history as part of the colonial experience. This book treats the colonial experience as part of Jewish history.

Book Description
The Slave Power, John E. Cairnes's seminal work on slavery, was widely acclaimed upon publication in 1862 as a brilliant attempt both to explain the essential cause of the American Civil War and to shape European policy concerning the struggle. It remains among the most important works on the political economy of Southern slavery. When Cairnesone of the nineteenth century's preeminent classical liberal economistscharacterized Southern slavery as inefficient and backward, his opinions carried enormous weight, earning him applause in the North and castigation in the slave- holding South. Casting the Civil War as a contest between an economically defunct and politically aggressive Southern slave power and a liberal, capitalist, free-wage-labor North, Cairnes offered an interpretation of the origins of the Civil War that has remained as compelling and controversial as it was when first published.
Mark M. Smith's new introduction to the work places The Slave Power in historical context by explaining the intellectual milieu in which the book was written (including a treatment of classical liberal economic thought in Great Britain), the book's friendly reception in Union circles, and its rejection by war-torn Confederates. Smith also traces the book's reception by successive generations of historians of the slave South.
Customer Reviews:
History -- Or Fiction.......2004-12-02
John Cairnes, a British contemporary economist of the time, wrote his work in 1862 attempting to explain how the Slave Power (the plantation aristocracy of the South) conspired over a period of 50 years prior to the Civil War to promote slavery as a protected, "peculiar institution" in the whole United States. Much of what Cairnes says is absolutely true and historically supported. Some of his contentions are subjective and can not be proven in fact or historical reflection. The introduction of the recent edition, written by Mark Smith, points out numerous errors and inconsistencies that crept into the work in 1862. John Cairnes, himself, is very redundant. He repeats his position and explanations to the point of distraction. Add the historical inconsistencies and this work is best suited as a research document for an experienced Civil War history afficiencado.
