From Antarctica to Zimbabwe, if you're going there, chances are Lonely Planet has been there first. With a pithy and matter-of-fact writing style, these guides are guaranteed to calm the nerves of first-time world travelers, while still listing off-the-beaten-path finds sure to thrill even the most jaded globetrotters. Lonely Planet has been perfecting its guidebooks for nearly 30 years and as a result, has the experience and know-how similar to an older sibling's "been there" advice. The original backpacker's bible, the LP series has recently widened its reach. While still giving insights for the low-budget traveler, the books now list a wide range of accommodations and itineraries for those with less time than money.
Whether you're packing your snorkel to explore Palancar Reef (the second-longest barrier reef in the world), stocking extra film to explore the Toltec-Maya roots of Chichén Itzá, or toting your hiking boots to the volcanoes of Guatemala, this practical guide will help you get where you want to go. It features more than 100 maps; useful cultural, biological, and geographical footnotes; places to stay and eat for any budget; overviews of the major Mayan archaeological sites; and a handy glossary of Spanish and Mayan terms. This book also covers Chiapas, Tobasco, and the incredible ruins of Copán in Honduras. --Kathryn True

Lonely Planet Guatemala, Belize & Yucatan.......2001-01-21
While being a good general guide it is not, as others seem to believe, for those of you interested in getting "off the beaten path". You will end up visiting the same sites as the rest of the thousands that have purchased this book and others like it. Also, keep in mind that this book has not been updated in three years and is not to be relied upon heavily. I do believe the Lonely Planet series is quite helpful, but remember that you are the true judge of what you see and experience.
The straight stuff.......2000-05-25
This guide is packed with a ton of great info. This book is indespensible for those traveling off the beaten path in the Yucatan, from the colonial cities to Mayan pyramids hidden in the jungle. With out this book I would have missed what became some of the highlights of my trip!
THE BEST FOR TRAVEL IN THE YUCATAN.......2000-04-25
My husband and I used this book on both of our trips to Mexico and found it fabulous. Detailed maps of the major cities. It helped us get through Cancun, Chetumal and Merida which are difficult on your own - driving or walking. This book gave hotels and restaurants for all travel budgets and if ever in Merida, I recommend the Hotel Trinidad Galleria. Quite a sight! Also detailed the ruins and gave some background. This book gave good tips for traveling to other countries too. Highly recommended for Mexico traveling.

Helpful advanced history text to cover 20th century topics.......2006-04-15
I teach International Baccalaureate history at one of the top schools in the world, and this book makes a nightly trek home with me. Students in IB or even AP Euro would have a hard time finding another source as rich as Walsh's effort. It is packed with helpful analysis, documents, quotes, review materials, wtc. I have used it to prepare for each of my senior level topics this year, such as WW1, Nazi Germany, the USSR, WWII, and the Cold War.
This book would do a very adequate job in assisting anyone preparing to work with such material, and would be considered one of my three most vital texts I use.
excellent book.......2005-09-26
this is a very good history book. it explains things very clearly and is also visually pleasing.
the book uses a lot of primary/secondary sources, which is good because it makes students think more deeply about history.
A very good history book.......2005-08-03
When I studied in Singapore, it was my history textbook. But when I finished Grade 10, I needed to hand it back to School library.
But I really like it very much. It's a very good history book. It mainly tells about Modern History, contains Britain, China, the USA, the USSR, Germany, France and many ohter countries.
More important, the resources in the book are rich and vivid. A lot of quotes, pictures, letters and so on. They can help you to understand a lot of things more clearly.
So if you want to have a general idea about modern history, read it, you won't be disappointed.
Especially if you do not take history as your main subject, but still interest in it. It can help you very much.
ridiculous past review--a very good book.......2005-01-16
i have been a teacher for 4 years in international schools, and i think the previous review is written by someone with, to put is as politely as possible, very little common sense. i dont think the book is perfect, but it is useful for a variety of students, is interesting and informative without too much information, can be easily supplemented, and has a variety of useful homework assignments and activities for students to keep up with understanding or to be assigned by the teacher. the assanine charaterization of "rubbish" is far from the truth--read it for yourself.
Dont use this book.......2003-09-08
The GCSE TEXT book is rubbish. Dont use it.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Diane Ackerman relishes the world of her garden. As a poet, she finds within it an endless field of metaphors. As a naturalist, she notices each small, miraculous detail: the hummingbirds and their routines, the showy tulips, the crazy yellow forsythia. Of visiting deer she writes, "I love watching the deer, which always arrive like magic or a miracle or the answer to an unasked question."
In her popular book A Natural History of the Senses, Ackerman celebrates the human body; in A Natural History of My Garden, she turns her attention to the world outside the body, outside the human sphere. Structured by seasons, this is a book of subtle shifts, but the reader never feels lost. Her prose is so welcoming, at times it feels like she's talking directly to you, although her lush, poetic language is the opposite of speech.
Distracted urban readers craving a book that will transport them would do well to spend time immersed in these pages, as will gardeners who've lost appreciation for their plot. Ackerman is a generous writer--a teacher who will share treasured, obscure passages from Beckett or Hawthorne. She's emotional and highly charged, and her descriptions are so clear they're small marvels. She's remarkable for her ability to find mystery everywhere. --Emily White
Book Description
In the mode of her bestseller A Natural History of the Senses, Diane Ackerman celebrates the sensory pleasures of her garden through the seasons. Whether she is deadheading flowers or glorying in the profusion of roses, offering sugar water to a hummingbird or studying the slug, she welcomes the unexpected drama and extravagance as well as the sanctuary her garden offers.
Written in sensuous, lyrical prose, Cultivating Delight is a hymn to nature and to the pleasure we take in it.
Customer Reviews:
not what I was looking for.......2006-01-12
In an earlier book, Ms. Ackerman congratulates herself on being open to experience more than most people. In light of this, I found that in this book she is too self-absorbed in herself (ironic for someone who does at times describe the natural world so beautifully) and too enamored of her ability to write prose.
She's good at throwing in fascinating factoids on everything from space to psychology to animal behavior, but alas, seems to flit from topic to topic like a bee gathering pollen. That is to say the flow of her writing is haphazard (though a bee may indeed be more purposeful than I give it credit for here).
If most people don't seem to have as much time to smell the roses as Ackerman, perhaps that is because they work away from home full time and have children and a spouse whose needs must occasionally come before theirs. It can be hard to be open to the natural world when you're worrying about being fired or demoted or if your child has come down with the flu. I never get the sense from her books that Ackerman lives in "the real world" what with her tales of meditating, biking, rose gathering, etc.
That's lovely for her, but don't pass judgments on people with different lifestyles.
I wanted to learn more about plants and the best conditions for growing various ones. Instead, I got a book of poetic, and sometimes purple, meditations, which was all right, but not what I had expected.
brilliant, meditative, poetic and charming.......2005-05-27
i checked this book out from the library during the drab winter months of oregon, and i was so enraptured with it that i kept it for 3 weeks, reading it as slowly as possible, savoring every page. it's on my list of books to buy for myself, as well. i thought her writing was fluid and descriptive. i thoroughly enjoyed meandering along with her through her garden and through her life. i imagine her garden must be incredible. i'm no book reviewer, but i can say this: i haven't read any of ackerman's other books (yet), but this one is spectacular.
a gardener's deligh.......2004-05-23
I read this book from the library and then bought it for myself because it is definitely a re-reading book. I have read it several times now and it amazes me every time. The depth of knowledge and the decriptions of her plants along with the distractions of her life are interesting, engaging and wonderful to read. Diane is one of my favorite authors but this book combines her scientific wordy writing style with one of my loves - plants and gardening. I read it when I'm sad and it reminds me of the wonders in the world and in my yard and neighborhood. I envy her spending so much time in her garden. I highly recommend it to plant people who like to read books besides the plant manuals that tell you how to grow things, enjoying the plants is the ultimate pleasure.
I loved it, and Iým not even remotely a gardener.......2004-02-25
Gardens. They're great, and I have a lovely one in my front yard. But I can claim exactly none of the credit. My style of gardening is to sit on the front steps chatting with Teri, my gardener, while she prunes the shrubs and tucks primroses and lobelia and cyclamen into the little bare spots.
But I love reading about people who DO enjoy gardening, and Diane Ackerman is a consummate writer on the subject. I've read The Moon by Whale Light and A Natural History of the Senses, two others of her several books, and find myself equally charmed by this one. It's a casual tour through the four seasons of her upstate backyard garden. But, as she's a naturalist, a poet, and a philosopher, she doesn't stop with just the plants; she uses the plants and their interdependent roles as metaphors to browse mentally through a wide variety of topics, including what gardens can do for people more than how people can tend a garden. It's like a role reversal of sorts. Some of the subjects that her free- and far-ranging mind roams over include: how we are like plants, plant's self-defense mechanisms, why we see faces in nature, etc. Her lyrical writing and vast, encyclopedic curiosity sometimes remind me of Annie Dillard's nature writing, a comparison that should be considered a compliment to both authors.
Stop and Smell the Words.......2003-10-22
Previous reviewers, grumps and rhapsodics both, are pretty accurate in their review of this work. If you're looking for a lot of how-tos about gardening, you won't find them here. What you will find is someone who LOVES her garden, and loves reflecting on it. While the "hard labor" of gardening is something she is glad to hire other people to do for her, she revels in it's lovely blossoms and the wildlife who visit it. My husband was put off by her hiring out the hard work too, but all I could think was, "If I could afford it, I'd hire out the nasty stuff too"
I really don't think it is the author's intent to instruct us on how to garden, what she does is inform us, through her example, that delight can be found in many aspects of gardening. It is a zen-like philosophy; focus lovingly and intently on what you do.
While there are no earth shattering revelations here, Ms Ackerman's musings reminded me of poems I had forgotten, books I'd been meaning to read, and, yes, plants I'd been meaning to plant. While some may have a problem with this as an overall book, I can't imagine anyone objecting to it page-by-page. This may be one of those books to be read just a few pages at a time. Savor each page as you would a rose blossom, enjoy the loveliness of it, then move on.
Book Description
Professional designers know that it's attention to detail that truly distinguishes an interior. Light fixtures, door handles, textiles, fittings, accessories: these are the components that can transform a merely stylish space into something more personal and unique. Without them, even the most professionally decorated homes can end up looking like a museum-beautiful, but intimidating and ultimately lifeless. Showcasing actual residences in hundreds of stunning, full-color photographs, this volume zeroes in on the critical fine points and finishing touches that give a room individual character. Through a casebook method of presentation that mirrors the way most of us approach home renovation-room by room-Trocmé emphasizes a practical design philosophy in which functionality is as important as pure form.
Representing a range of contemporary styles, the featured interiors reveal how real people have addressed a wide variety of decorating challenges. A directory of sources refers readers to manufacturers of top-quality materials and products.
Customer Reviews:
They were not kidding when they titled this book "Attention to Detail.".......2006-07-28
This is one of the most informative non-textbook on interior design I have ever read. The author goes into great detail on the items she chose and why she chose them-hence the name. "Attention to Detail" is split into three major sections with several chapters in each section. The sections are Casebook, Functional Detail, and Decorative Detail.
The chapters in the Casebook section represent each area in a house. There are several cases described in each chapter. For each case the author describes what the client's desires were, each item in the room, and how it incoporates the clients desires. There is a floor plan of each room. She also describes a concept and how the case illustrates that concept. For example, the first chapter is about living rooms. Case Study 1 is about Ralph and Ann Pucci's living room. They like their environment to be "neat, but easy." The concept this case illustrates is comfort. The author describes how the color, style, and placement of furniture, art, windows, books, etc. was done just so to evoke the feeling of neat and easy comfort.
The second section Funtional Detail contains the chapters surfaces, walls, floors, structure, services, water, heat, light, and storage. In these chapters the author describes different types of items and concepts in each category. For example in the wall category she describes inserting walls, bare walls, cladding, tile, color, and pattern. This section does not give you step-by-step instructions on how to achieve the effects-there are other books for that-it describes some examples in each category and why you might want to incorporate them into a room.
The third section Decorative Detail has chapters on accessories, such as furniture, soft furnishings, and art and ornament. There is also a list of resources for the book.
I like "Attention to Detail" because it not only shows great pictures, but unlike most interior design/decoration books, gives you the decorator's "assignment" and how she accomplished it. The interior design style is modern, but the information can be applied to any style. I think this is a great edition to anyone's interior decoration/design library
Book Description
This second book in the Attention to Detail series is the sister publication to Attention to Detail: A Gentlemans Guide to Professional Appearance and Conduct. Like the first, it covers the basics of grooming, proper business attire, interviewing and business etiquette... from a womans perspective.
Customer Reviews:
Basics for beginners only!.......2005-03-07
Luckily, I checked this out from the library rather than purchasing it. This very thin, very basic booklet is more like somthing I would expect to get free as a promotional item, not something I would pay $12.95 for.
If you've ever been in the workforce, or your mother taught you anything about how to dress and act, you don't need this book.
not worth the price.......2004-12-06
I bought this book, thinking the same as another reviewer, that it would be about DETAILS, not basic stuff. I was extremely disappointed. This is good for high school students or a high school guidance office, but it's not useful for someone who is starting out of college with a professional career. A MUCH better choice would be The New Women's Dress For Success, by Molloy.
This book was extremely thin, 64 pages, and overpriced. I paid much less for a different book that was MUCH more informative and helpful.
Simple, Easy to Read.......2002-08-22
This guide is a very simple and easy to read guide for women who need some extra advice creating the right look and improving their appearance.
not worth it at all.......2001-11-06
Save your money - there's really nothing new here.
Thanks!.......2000-11-27
My mentor at work gave me a copy of this book my first day on the job. Thank you for this guide, I fell much better about myself and what to say and do when I'm in the office.

Attention to Detail: A Woman's Guide to Professional Appearance and Conduct (Attention to Detail)
ASIN: 0966531906 |
Book Description
This book was designed for any man who is preparing to enter the professional world. It began as a series of notes developed for friends during college. With work and research, the notes became a book. This second edition includes information on grooming, employment tips and business etiquette. It is hoped that this book will answer most young men's questions and put them at ease in the professional world. Attention to Detail: A Gentleman's Guide to Professional Appearance and Conduct makes a great gift and is a "must" for young gentleman aspiring to a professional career.
Customer Reviews:
a teens guide, not a gentleman's guide.......2004-09-23
this book should be titled "professional appearance for dummies". most of the information is very very basic. remember, this book is only 51 pages all inclusive. in that space, it covers dressing, posture, emailing, eating, etc. not a lot of information on any topic.
on top of that, some of the information is wrong. for instance, the author derates asymmetrical tie knots like the half windsor as unprofessional. this is inaccurate and the half windsor is one of the three most popular tie knots for business. (another - the four in hand - the most common - is also asymmetrical)
if you "don't do nuance" and want a couple of rules to live by - this is your book. alternately, if you are young and need a good introduction, read this. otherwise, its really not worth the money.
Overpriced but good for teens.......2003-10-05
Prior to buying this book, I read a review that said it was too simple for real office professionals but good for teens just entering the workplace as a starter guide. I think that is a good appraisal.
So I bought the book as a gift for a teen just graduating from high school.
As a gift for a teen, I am disappointed with the sketchy, plain cover and the sketch quality of the illustrations.
I am also disappointed that including shipping and handling I paid some $17 or $18 and received a book that looks like I paid $2 for it. Therefore, it is not well suited as a stand-alone gift either. This was not a "good deal."
In spite of it's cheap appearance and thinness, the information inside is good for a first, elementary, book on dress and conduct.
good book.......2001-02-21
Although they have a definite conservative slant, that slant is the reality of proper dress for interviews.
Not Bad..........2001-02-20
This one isnt as good as his other with the black cover... but it gets the point across. Good starter tips.
Wax On, Wax Off.......2000-10-05
This book is for a young man who is about to graduate from high school or college. If you are looking for a serious book about men's fashion, I suggest you look elsewhere. Perhaps you may want to look at Josh Karlen's 'Indispensible Guide to Classic Men's Clothing' which I found informative reading in the areas of suits, shirts, and outerwear; or even Tim Meehan's 'Suit Yourself' which I thought was interesting in the areas of "dress" casual and "corporate" casual. It took me about 10 minutes to read Mr. Greenleaf's book after skimming the chapters on 'Shaking Hands', 'Shining shoes' (who has time to put shaving cream on their shoes?)and business etiquette. If you need work in these areas, then this book is for you. If you are already established in the business world and have already committed all the fashion crimes early in your career but are gearing more towards the next level in classic men's fashion, this book is not for you. This book is a very basic primer for a person whose closet is empty.

The photographer's patient lens reveals pictures of overwhelming calm and beauty. Put together as a series of images, they reproduce the sensations of the ordinary that the photographic eye is able to identify in the most unassuming of places. Images of the Edge extends an insight into Hans Hansen's approach and work as a photographer of objects, an oeuvre that has become the epitome of poetic functionality. A special folding technique was used for the binding of this book to enhance the viewer's experience.

Reflecting the history and heritage of Texas.......2002-08-08
Early Tejano Ranching: Daily Life At Ranchos San Jose And El Fresnillo by Andres Saenz (Professor of History, Austin Community College, Austin, Texas) is the story of the author's family (the Saenzes and the Lopezes) who established San Jose and El Fresnillo during the 1850s and 1860s. Drawn and composed from interviews, historical records, visits to historical sites, and more, Early Tejano Ranching presents a fascinating picture of life in the past, the daily work of ranching, the labor of self-sufficient families who struggled to surviving against drought, wild animals, and even Indian attacks. Early Tejano Ranching is solid and highly recommended representation reflecting the history and heritage of Texas. Also highly recommended is Professor Saenz's earlier work, Tejano Empire: Life On The South Texas Ranchos (0890968349)
