Customer Reviews:
Awesome guide and resource book.......2000-09-22
I was lucky to find this book in the library and used it extensively while in Warsaw, Cracow and Prauge. The detail is incredible, the writing style excellent with a lilt of humor. This book -made- my trip so I'm buying my own copy. If you take this book to Europe with you don't bother hiring a guide or taking a tour. It has more than any individual could offer.
Delightful.......2000-05-19
This book is a gem! I pick it up and settle down in my chair and am transported in time and place to Eastern Europe. I was in Prague before I read the book (it had not been published yet) and now when I read the Prague sections everything comes to life. Mr. Valley has a way with words. He supples the reader with his dense knowledge of his subject in an easy to read, matter of fact style. I would recommend this book to anyone whether or not they are planning to travel to the cities described. I am eagerly awaiting his next book.
Absorbing insight into jewish life.......2000-03-16
Having known Eli many years ago at University, I couldn't wait to read this book to re-establish spiritual contact. What I wasn't prepared for was the depthand passion that Eli had written on the subject. This is a masterpiece that once you have picked up you will not put down until you have seen the cities and experienced the tours first hand. My only regret is that the vast majority of those reading this book may never actually visit Prague.
More than a travel guide.......1999-12-17
I picked this book up from a friend's bookshelf intending to flip through the pages. I ended up taking it home with me and reading it from cover to cover. It's well written and filled with a great deal of fascinating history. Not having ever been to the cities mentioned in the book, I can't comment on the accuracy of the tourist information. But this book would be of interest to anyone who has a curiosity about the history of Jewish life in eastern Europe. If it's ever reprinted, photographs would make it even better.
Eye-opening. Don't leave home without it!.......1999-10-18
For anyone interested in the Jewish history of Eastern Europe, this book is compulsory. It also presents conceptual and detailed history of over a thousand years and up-to-date descriptions of what the traveller will find now. Don't leave it behind despite its heft.
Book Description
This important book provides a full account of the famine, combining narrative, analysis, historiography, and scores of contemporary illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Reads like an economic text book .......2007-04-02
I just finished reading Mr. Donnelly's book. Admittedly it is my first one on this subject so I am not sure how it compares to others. The book it well researched, organized and written however, it wasn't what I was looking for. I thought it was interesting, however, that the British government did anything at all to help however, it was not enough, way too late, too eratic and not for long enough with disastrous consquences.
Chapter after chapter there are statistics and percentages for this county or that county and then the same thing is compare to pre-famine years then post famine years and sometimes year by year through out the famine period for instance, the importation of grain products. Too much! If you are looking for personal narratives or local stories or historical consequences around the world, Britain and Ireland this is not your book.
Was it Famine or Genocide?.......2006-09-14
Although many have heard about the "Patato Famine" in Ireland in 1845-1847; they actually know and understand very little about what happened during those few years and more importantly the effects it had on Ireland right up till the end of the 19th Century.
To understand what happened ,it is imperative that one understand the history of Ireland for at least 100 years before and know that Britain ruled totally all aspects of life in Ireland. All the laws, all the land ownership, all the imports and exports, schooling, religion, policeing, social services, government, military, and thus was responsible for things whether physically or with the people, rich, poor or in between;being the way they were when the potato crop was affected with Phytophthora Infestans in 1845 and 1846 and subsequent years.
No other disease in Europe has been written about more than this "Famine" other than The Black Death of the 1350's.As the Black Death changed forever the way of life in Europe, the "Famine" had a similar affect on Ireland.
This book attempts to cover all aspects of the "Famine" and particularly tries to resolve the question of whether the death and devastation had to be as bad as it was; whether Britain was content to allow the country to be ravished,or even if Britain's actions atually magnified the problem. In more blunt words ;"Was there really a Famine or or was it Genocide on the part of Britain?
The book contains a great amount of data, but then again the source of the information is from government controlled records.
One must read between the lines and realize that it was not the wealthy, government officials, the landowners, and the Anglo Irish, that died in huge numbers, lost their land, and emigrated to America;while Britain looked on.
Many other books on this subject leave the question still unanswered. However;that is not the view of many who have concluded what the answer really is.
Donnelly mentioned "The Great Hunger" by Cecil Whoodham-Smith.I have read that book and written a Review on October 26,2003. It is an excellent book and I highly recommend it.
While Donnelly's book has a great amount of data and facts;it also has a large number of excellent drawings of the period. These line drawings and colored reproductions of paintings depicting life at the time.Of the several other books I've read on the Famine;I can't recall one that is so wll illustrated.
Donnelly doesn't really conclude whether it was a Famine or Genocide--he presents the facts, issues, etc.,and leaves the conclusion to the reader.
Overall,a well researched and written book and an excellent overage of the Famine years and the results it had on Ireland.

Way Better Than Most Juvenile Non-Fiction..........2005-02-02
...but there was something a little weird about this book. In the last chapter, the author starts talking about Malthus and how horrible disasters are inevitable. Although he presents us with the evidence that there was plenty of food available in Ireland, and that it was being shipped out of the country to sell in England, Nardo then makes contradictory statements about how the Irish starved because Peel couldn't secure shipments of food relief from America. I checked out another book in the World Disasters series, and I have this vibe like the people who write and publish these books are Jehovah's Witnesses or else members of a doomsday cult.
Nicely Done.......2002-03-29
This book doesn't have much detail because it was written for kids. But it covers main points of the potato famine and the events that caused it in a thorough, thoughtful way, pointing out the apathy felt by many English people at the time and the tragedy of so many starving people in Ireland. The last chapter discusses the need to end poverty and hunger in the world.
great.......1999-10-09

Customer Reviews:
okay, not great.......2007-01-04
The images are not the highest quality, but if your goal is to get a taste, maybe to have something to copy to learn the style, this book will do fine, and it is not terribly expensive.
useless.......2006-03-17
What is the point of buying having the book when you can't even see it. The print quality of this book is so poor. The images are either too dark or just can't see at all.
Inexpensive renderings of classic drawings........2001-08-13
A good buy for any student of art or anatomy.
Extraordinary Studies of the Great Master.......2000-10-22
In this thin but great book, you'll find 46 works of the great master - Michelangelo. Concentrating in Life drawings you'll see studies of the great marble - "David", for "The Battle of cascina",for various figures of the Sistine Chaplle Ceiling, and many more astonishing studies, all vivid in his great manner. Black & white. A real "Must Buy", especially in this price. Michelangelo. The Master.
definately worth the [price].......2000-09-11
this is a collection of 46 figure drawings michelangelo did. michelangelo was a master painter and sculptor, he rendered figures more beautifully than any other artist ever has. most of the drawings in this book are studies he did for his paintings and sculptures. and he was a master draftsman. the book is in a workbook style binding so it takes up little space, but it is a hardy book. it is well worth the...price.

Customer Reviews:
An outstanding research.......2000-03-28
The book deals with the works of NagiB Mahfouz, an Egyptian writer who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1988, and was the first Arabic writer to be so honoured. Since 1960s Mahfouz has been acknowledged as the master of the Arabic novel. Many in the Arab world saw the prize somewahat ironic, not least because the work for which Mahfouz received the prize had been published at least three decades earlier. However, Mahfouz's books are still unavailable in many Middle Eastern countries on account of his support for President Sadat's Camp David peace treaty with Israel in 1978.
Mahfouz was born in Gamaliya, Cairo. He graduated from the Cairo University in 1934. By 1936, having spent a year working on an M.A., he decided to become a professional writer. He worked as a journalist at Ar-Risala, and ontributed to A-Hilal and Al-Ahram.
Before turning to the novel Mahfouz wrote articles and short stories. By 1939 he had already written three novels. In the same year he entered government bureaucracy, where he was employed for the next 35 years. From 1939 until 1954 he was a civil servant at Ministry of Islamic Affairs, and worked then as director of Foundation for Support of the Cinema for the State Cinema Orgazination. In 1969-71 he was consultant for cinema affairs to the Ministry of Culture.
ABATH AL-AQDAR (1939), RADUBIS (1943), and KIFAH TIBAH (1944) were historical novels, that were conceived as a part of a larger unfilled project of 30 novels meant to cover the whole history of Egypt.
However, following the third novel, Mahfouz shifted his interest to the present.
Mahfouz's major work in the 1950s was The Cairo Trilogy, which the author completed before the July Revolution. The three novels were titled with the street names Palace Walk, Palace of Desire, and Sugar Street. It depicts the life of three generations in Cairo from WW I to the 1950s, when King Farouk I was overthrown. Without turning the individual characters into representantives of the different historical currents, Mahfouz lets history flow from the richness of characters and from their psychological, intellectual and social dimensions. The trilogy and its mode connects Mahfouz with the line of such authors as Balzac, Dickens, Tolstoy, and Galsworthy.
The Children of Gebelawi (1959), which was serialized in the magazine Al-Ahram, portrayed average Egyptians living the lives of Cain and Abel, Moses, Jesus, and Mohammed. The work was banned throughout the Arab world, except Lebanon. Mahfouz left his post as Director of Censorship and was appointed Director of the Foundation for the Support of the Cinema. In 1969 he became consultant to the Ministry of Culture, retiring in 1972. He has been also a board member of Dar al Ma'aref publishing house.
In the 1960s and 1970s Mahfouz started to construct his novels more freely and use interior monologue. In Miramar (1967) he used a form of multiple first-person narration in which four narrators tell the story. Manfouz become more interested in destinies, ideas, and human types than meticulous details of the perivious period. In Arabian Nighs and Days (1981) and in The Journey of Ibn Fatouma (1983) he used traditional Arabic narratives as subtexts.
Mahfouz has written some 40 novels and short story collections, screenplays and several stage plays. In his works Mahfouz have combined intellectual and cultural influnces from East and West - his own exposure to the literary of non-Arabic culture began in his youth with enthusiastic consumption of Western detective stories. Mahfouz's stories are almost always set in the heavily populated urban quarters of Cairo. His focus on 'the little man' who has to deal with the changing traditions, rebellion of younger generations and the temptations of Western values has made him spokesperson not only for Egypt but also for a number of non-Western cultures. But Mahfouz is not so interested in historical and realistic analysis as the philosophical and psychological impact of the change on ordinary people. Mahfouz's introspection has been valuable landmark in the 1990s for understanding the realities of Egypt in the age of transition.
NOTE: Latest news of Mahfouz tell that the fundamentalist Muslims have threatened him because of his writings. In his works Mahfouz has offered critical views of British colonialism and contemporary Egypt, social issues, and political prisoners. The major Egyptian influence on Mahfouz's thoughts of science and socialism in the 1930s was Salama Musa, the Fabian intellectual.
Book Description
For the 75th anniversary of Anne Frank's birth, an important publishing event - the first full-color visual book celebrating the legacy of Anne and her famous house. The photographs compiled here are in both black-and-white and color; they are vivid and moving, and make a lasting impression. The reader experiences the house and its relics, and sees photos of Anne's family and friends, the people who helped them and the changing Amstrerdam neighborhood where they lived.
Customer Reviews:
Inside Anne Frank's House: An Illustrated Journey Through Anne's World.......2007-06-12
I visited Anne Frank's huis in Amsterdam. This book not only brought me back there, but allowed me to digest the details of what they illustrated. Very moving! A topic people all over the world mustn't forget.
While the book followed the tour of the house, there are areas of the book that seem to have a weak translation into English. I wanted to absorb every written word, but there were areas that were not very clear. But I wouldn't give up the book for that. Thank you Ms Westra! And Thank you Mr. Frank for sharing the story of your precious little girl. I'm sure you are with her now.
Great book, but watch out -- it's got two titles!.......2006-05-09
FYI, for those of you who have been to the Anne Frank House:
Except for the cover, Inside Anne Frank's House is COMPLETELY IDENTICAL to the deluxe edition of a book sold in the Netherlands and on annefrankhouse.org under the title, Anne Frank House: A Museum with a Story. (Here's the link to the other version: [...])
It's a beautiful book, well made and with many, many large photos, and I heartily recommend it. But it's not so beautiful as to warrant inadvertantly buying two, like I did. ;)
WOW THIS BOOK ON ANNE FRANK WAS SO GOOD.......2005-03-07
Look at the subject it says it all. Basically its about the history beyond her, hiding place, diary. The text and photos wre good. Basically knew everything about her, but the main reason bought book is the photos that I haven't seen it yet. Thank you.
An Illustrated Journey.......2005-01-09
I have long been interested in the story of Anne Frank. Over the years I have read many books about her and I continue to reread the diary every year. Recently, this book came to my attention and I gave it a read. There is much about it that impresses.
This book is subtitled An Illustrated Journey Through Anne's World and that seems appropriate. The key attraction of the book are the hundreds of photos that fill its pages, many of which I had never seen before. With its oversize, coffee table book format, and slick pages, it is a beautiful thing to look at. Where the book begins to let the reader down is the text.
Granted, the text is minimal and what there is can be highly informative and descriptive; however, I noticed a number of typos in my edition and many of the pictures were mislabeled (if the label could be found at all). It also seemed like different people were in charge of different sections of the book because there was no consistency to the presentation. I actually liked the structure of the first section of the book, where German history ran in small pictures along the bottom of the pages and the Frank family filled the top. I wish this style would have continued because it was very informative and allowed the reader to make connections but this was dropped rather quickly.
Still, there is a lot to be said for this book. It's cliche that a picture says a thousand words but it is amazing the emotion that is captured in some of these shots, particularly if you know the story behind them.
We Remember, If Only We Would Learn.......2004-12-15
It's an ordinary house, not spectacular at all. It wouldn't be worth photographing at all except for the extraordinary young lady who lived here and who kept a diary during one of those times when the devil was loose on the earth and good men did nothing to stop him.
But because of this young lady and her extraordinary diary this house is a monument, a church if you will, that commemorates not just this girl but all of those who went with her, and all of those who tried to help them.
The book itself is beautifully done, not only a photographic guide but a history, a memorial in its own right with quotations and photographs of objects displayed in the actual exhibition. ==Let us never forget!
Let us also remember the other holocausts that followed to prove that we didn't learn enough: Rwands, Cambodia, Ethnic Cleansing in former Yugoslavia, and what may happen in Iraq between the Sunni, Shiite, and Kurds.
