    5 out of 5 stars A Helpful Book.......2007-09-19

Frommer's Israel was useful to have in hand. Background history and
archeological sites were well-explained, and there are lots of human
interest boxes that added to our understanding of ancient sites as
wells as major cities. In practical terms, we liked a handy 2 page
spread filled with excellent street food and cheap meal suggestions
for Jerusalem's busy downtown district, where wall to wall eateries
can be a confusing maze ( In some cases choices were no-name holes in
the wall). The book also clued us in to terrific "business lunch"
deals (til 5 or 6pm) at wonderful restaurants. The Frommer's people
clearly love the place and packed the book with a wide range of
suggestions for all kinds of travelers and their interests, including
    young kids.

Another Amazon reviewer thought Israel's great Aroma coffee
shops weren't mentioned. But actually, we found Aroma among the tons
of cafes and eateries in the center of Jerusalem because Frommer's
praised it in a special box on Best Coffee Places (two downtown
branches for Aroma in Jerusalem, as well as a number of other great
local coffee cafes are on page 139). Initially, we wondered why
Frommer's listed no Starbucks -- it's almost un-American to omit
them, but apparently, they don't exist in Israel. One minus: Map
bullets showing some restaurant locations were not clear for the tiny
maze of downtown Jerusalem streets, but in the end, we found what we
    were looking for.

My wife and I spent three nights at the Notre Dame Guest House in Jerusalem last fall. Notre Dame was especially recommended by the author of Frommer's Israel, who was very generous with his time and suggestions when we contacted him for advice. Contrary to the reviewer from Washington State we enjoyed our stay. The personnel was courteous and helpful, the food was good (including the espresso coffee), the surroundings and our room were nice, the price was reasonable, and we saw or heard nothing to make us feel unsafe at any time.
As to another reviewer's complaint that "no mention is given for coffee lovers of the great Israeli chain CAFÉ AROMA", this café is nicely described in page 139 of the book.
Not having read most of the book (away from Jerusalem we stayed with and were shown around by Israeli relatives) I hesitate to give it a five star rating. But what I read was helpful,

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre book for Isreal but it's the most "updated" with a copyright of 2007.......2007-08-11

I recently returned from Israel and Petra and used this book extensively (in addition to an old Lonley Planet for Jerusalem and Eye Witness for historical perspectives). By in large, it was a mediocre guide book especially if you were to compare it to the Rick Steves series for Europe. The background information for sites were thorough enough. However, with a copyright of 2007, please be cautioned that some information may not be current (ie. incorrect websites for hotels). The maps were clumsy with enlargements oriented differently from the orginal map to fit the layout of the page. Also, the items on the map did not always match the highlighted site. For example, in the section for hotels in the Old City, hotels that were discussed in the text did not always correspond to what was illustrated on the map. I love ruins and used the Lost Ancient Cities section to pick the 2 ruins I would visit. Ziporri and Caesarea were the top two with similar commentary. Ziporri turned out to be a waste of time. We drove for over 2 hours from Tel Aviv to find ruins where we were nearly the only visitors and the highlight was a floor mosaic of the "Mona Lisa of the Galilee." Caesarea on the other hand, was amazing and reminded me of a smaller version of Pompei situated along the beach. It would have been immensely helpful if the guide book had made that distinction. The Petra section was mildly helpful. I would like to have known that there were only private guides at the Visitor Center and the types of tours provide, length of time, and cost. Whereas, it was interesting, but not helpful, to know how much locals were charged to enter the park versus visitors which is what was mentioned in the book. All in all, I would recommend this book simply because it is the "most updated" one on the shelves. However, I would caution readers to also consult other sources during your course of planning and travel.

    4 out of 5 stars Frommer's Israel.......2007-07-23

I really enjoyed using this Frommer's guide. It is broken down very well and does have a good "insider" view on what things to look for and do in Israel. The information is very useful and most importantly you can trust it. Enjoy Israel!

    1 out of 5 stars Definitely out-of-date.......2007-07-22

I work in a Jewish bookstore and also have traveled to Israel at least once a year since 2002 and less often before that. So last year I was happy to see that Fodor and Frommer had published new books on Israel. I bought the Frommer's book this summer as it seemed to have more details, but when I started to read it on the plane, I saw that much of the information was out-of-date. I totally agree with the other Washington State reviewer, Autumn Sheridan. For example, no mention is given for coffee lovers of the great Israeli chain CAFE AROMA, but Starbucks in mentioned although it closed down years ago. The information on car rentals is also out-of-date, especially the prices. The book says to be sure to rent a car with airconditioning, but it has been many many years since one could rent a car without it. This book may be OK for one who has never been to Israel and/or is coming on a group tour, but the authors really should have been more professional about the updating of the information.

Israel: Past & Present is a beautifully produced guide to the 16 top archeological sites in Israel. It uses pictures and overlays to illustrate what the sites look like now and how they would have appeared in their heyday, centuries ago. For Tiberias, for example, the guide provides some pivotal history--including its founding by Herod Antipas around A.D. 18, its fortification against the Great Revolt in A.D. 66, the Arab takeover in A.D. 636, the arrival of the crusaders in the 12th century, and all the subsequent crusader/Saladin battles, plus the restoration of the city walls in 1562 and the earthquake in 1837 that mangled those walls. There's a picture of Tiberias today, with sections of the ancient walls poking out among trees, cars, restaurants, and hotels, and an overlay with cutouts for the remnant walls that shows the 18th-century southern wall built on crusader fortification foundations. This is a lovely book from which to learn about Israel, inspire those interested in its history, and plan for a trip. --Stephanie Gold

5 out of 5 stars Tour Guide for Traveling to the Past.......2004-06-20

This handy little spiral-bound book has thick pages and wonderful photographs of historic sites in Israel. It is a virtual tour book of ancient Israel. The plastic graphic overlays for each page lets you see what the same scene might have looked like in ancient times. This is an excellent study help that allows you to visualize the buildings and places in the time of Jesus. The back of each page provides explanations of the historical and religious significance of the site. The rest of the book includes a glossary, a brief synopsis of ancient history, and maps to pull it all together. Though published by Frommer's, I would suggest that this is wonderful study guide for any student of the Bible, not just travelers to the Middle East. From the fortress at Masada to the church at Kursi, this collection gives you a tour of ancient sites and transports you to that world in a way other books cannot.

5 out of 5 stars Best short pictorial summary of the history of Israel ever.......1999-11-20

Book uses unique overlay technique that allows the reader to see what a historical site looks like today as well as what it looked like in its prime. Excellent reference material for pilgrims to the Holy Land. I bought it in Israel and bought three more for friends when I got home.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding visual reference to famous sites........1999-05-25

Trying to picture the past is often diffcult. This book is an outstanding reference and visual aid for anyone touring or studing Israel. Each of the major sites is shown today and with an overlay of it's former glory.

                    Book Description

Esteemed historian Albert Marrin offers an absorbing account of our first president's life and times in this biography, which was named a Booklist Editors' Choice and a School Library Journal Best Book.

                    Customer Reviews:

                    5 out of 5 stars A great book about a great man!.......2003-08-22

Marrin's book is history at its most entertaining and enlightening! Although targeted at young adults, I would also recommend it to many adult readers.

As someone who has read numerous "serious" history books that are frequently so dry and obtuse as to be inaccessable to the average reader, I would suggest Albert Marrin's George Washington & the Founding of a Nation. At 257 pages, the book is an enjoyable week's read covering all of the basic points of Washington's life and times. At its core it is fundamentally entertaining and would compare favorably with a Clancy or Grisham novel.

Marrin's work takes Washington down off his pedestal and displays the full humanity of the man. His tremendous courage and bravery, his sharp opportunism and the moral dilemmas he faced by owing slaves.

Marrin served as a junior high history teacher before becoming a university professor and eventually heading the history department at Yeshiva University in New York City. Clearly this is a man who spent his life making history come alive for young minds and he succeeds in this work both for young adults and for other adults who are looking for a greater appreciation of one of the key founders of the United States.

A special note for parents considering the work for young adults. Marrin's work is clearly inappropriate for younger children, but would be a great book for the child beginning to enter the world of adult reading. In Marrin's book the world is a far more complicated place than the world as explained in elementary school history texts. All of the historical figures are displayed with empathy and with their humanity open for inspection. The book should probably be rated R for violence, battle scenes are discussed realistically, and without being gratuitous, the author vividly describes the horrors of battle.

A section dealing with Washington's ownership of slaves, while depicting Washington as a relatively kind slave owner explains the dilemmas Washington faced and his ultimate hypocrisy in keeping slaves. A brief segment on how some planation owners mistreated slaves is particularly harrowing and gruesome at times.

As for sexuality, the book should be rated PG-13 as many of the British officers fall victim to the lovely ladies of Philadelphia.

Overall I highly recommend this book to individuals interested in learning more about George Washington and to young adults who are starting to enter the world of books aimed at mature readers.

                    5 out of 5 stars Fascinating History.......2003-03-25

I had to write this review because this is a fantastic book and it deserves a better rating than it has. I have read just about all of Marrin's books. He is my favorite author of history books for young adults. The reading style is always appropriate for younger readers (age 12 and up), but usually Marrin's books are too long for this target audience, who often struggle at reading anything that takes more than hour. I've seen kids I tried to get to read this book get turned-off after raising and lowering it a few times to assess its weight. In my view every page of Marrin's "George Washington" is worth reading. Marrin often finds choice excerpts from the primary literature that give you the feeling that you're really getting to know Washington and his times. Disregard the last customer review about inaccuracy. Marrin is a true historian and even if one quote wasn't verbatim, he didn't change its meaning.

I also disagree with the School Library Journal review saying that Milton Meltzer's "George Washington and the Birth of Our Nation" and Mary Pope Osborne's "George Washington: Leader of a New Nation" are equally fine biographies. Marrin has them both beat by miles. The writing is faster paced, the illustrations are better, and the book takes the subject to a greater depth.

This biography is a somewhat dark biography in that it focuses on the problems and not the incredible things that George Washington did. It also contains an inaccurate quote on page 54. The source of the quote is a letter to his brother John, where Washington is describing his incredible escape from an ambush near French-held Fort Duquesne. Every officer was killed and George Washington has 4 bullet holes in his cloak and 2 horses shot out from under him. In "The Writings of George Washington," George states: "But by the all-powerful dispensations of Providence, I have been protected beyond all human probability or expectation; for I had..." and he describes the situation to his brother. Albert Marrin changed this quote in his book to read: "I luckily escaped without a wound though I had..."
Many other books that have been written about George Washington have reduced Washington's quote or left it out altogether since it is a little long for children. But no one has changed it before...that is revisionistic, and unacceptable.

5 out of 5 stars brings Washington to life for young readers.......2002-02-09

I'm using this book, among many others, in a homeschooling course on the American Revolution. There are many good illustrations, the language is simple and unpretentious, and the story is engaging my 13 year old -- in fact, it is often quite gory and graphic in its descriptions of wartime events! Beware if you're squeamish about war. But young lads will love it.

4 out of 5 stars This book is an excellent overview of the birds of Iowa........1998-12-08

The Iowa Breeding Bird Atlas presents the first detailed state-wide survey results for breeding birds. Detailed species accounts are provided for more than 150 birds known to breed in Iowa. These are accompanied by maps showing the distribution of the birds. Several introductory chapters summarize information about the vegetation, geologic origins, and history of the state. Summary statistics include tables showing the most common species, the most frequently confirmed breeding species, and correlations between species groups and the different landforms. The data in this volume includes key information on both common and rare species. This book is an excellent reference for anyone interested in birds or bird atlases. The species accounts are extremely well-written and informative. I highly recommend this book.

                                Book Description

During the early medieval period, from the seventh to the ninth centuries, the area of western India now known as Rajasthan was transformed from a politically and artistically minor region to one of relative importance. Rajasthan was the homeland of the Gurjara Pratiharas, one of the most powerful dynasties in northern India, and many important temples were produced during their brief tenure there. While these monuments provide rich sources of information about iconographic preferences and artistic styles, this book argues that they further provide important, and overlooked, clues to Rajasthan's charged early political history. In analyzing sculptural style and iconographic programs within chronological and regional parameters, the book proposes that the Gurjara Pratihara presence in Rajasthan was energizing but disruptive, particularly to dominant religious and stylistic patterns in the region.
