Customer Reviews:
If you are a outdoor buff you need this guide. .......2006-10-07
There was a day when `Rough Guide' and `Lonely Planet' were the best South America guides available for travelers that go "off the beaten path." But slowly, year by year, `Footprint's coverage of South America has improved, and now this Footprint Bolivia is one of the best guides out today.
If you are an outdoor buff you need this guide. This edition has an excellent section on `Trekking near La Paz' as well as a great section on ` Hiking, Biking and Climbing' in Bolivia. Like Alan Murphy's previous Bolivian guide, the History, Economy, Culture, People and Environment section is not to be skipped. Excellent.
The maps are very good and will help you locate accommodations and eateries quickly. The guide's recommendations for accommodations and restaurants are reliable. None of the restaurants that I visited were outstanding, but then, people do not go to Bolivia for the cuisine.
On the "downside", the section on language schools (p.134) is not listed in the index and only by luck would you stumble upon it. All Footprint guides continue the frustrating codes used to tell you the cost of rooms and food. Instead of just telling you that a room is $25-30, they use LL, L, AL, A, B, C, D, E, F, G. For restaurants they use dollar signs, $$$, $$, $. They should just tell us the cost of a meal -- $8 to $12. Simple. Offensive is Footprint's insertion of advertisements (hotels, tour companies and travel services) throughout the guide. Is it not enough that you paid $24.95 for the guide? The advertisements also cause one to question the integrity of the guide's recommendations, especially when an advertiser, with a full page ad, is also strongly recommended by the authors. Hmm.
Among the many Bolivian guides that I have taken with me and reviewed, two currently are recommendable: "Pocket Adventures Bolivia" (see my review) and "Footprint Bolivia". You won't go wrong with either one.
Strongly Recommended.

Customer Reviews:
only good since there are few alternatives.......2006-08-11
The first 10 pages are great to read in the book store. The rest of the book is not that great. I only bought this book because I was going to Peru and Bolivia for 3 weeks (just returned) and didn't want to carry around two books. For that purpose it was fine and there isn't a recently published alternative. If you are traveling for longer I would recommend buying separate country books as you travel and discarding them as you leave a country. Or consider the slightly larger South American Handbook. Often the two books read verbatim but the larger guide had more information on Peru and Bolivia even though it also included the other SA countries. This book has glossy pages and pretty pictures. These are nice features while browsing in the bookstore but just mean extra weight while traveling.
Poorly planned guidebook. Nice pictures though........2006-05-10
I'd had a quick flip through the first few pages at a bookstore, and since I was only visiting those 3 countries, I bought it for it's convenient size/weight. Oh and at the time it seemed pretty informative and thorough.
Unfortunately on the first day of my trip when I arrived in La Paz, I quickly discovered otherwise. First I couldn't find ANY information on the valley of the moon, save for a barely-there mention at the end of some paragraph on Tihuanaco.
Then there were hardly any cafe/restaurant listings and it's always nice to know where's good to go for some specific types of food (and the previous reviewer said there weren't too many hostal listings either. good thing we had our accom. sorted out beforehand).
It would also have been a lot more helpful if there was more background information on destinations and historial buildings. And a lot less annoying if they placed the map of Old Quito next to Old city guide, instead of having to flip back and forth between pages.
To top it off, a Peruvian guide who's had 7yrs of tour experience in Bolivia/Peru pointed out that a lot of the book's prices were pretty outdated for a 2005 publication.
Overall, I have to say it was a poorly planned/written handbook.
Met quite a few people with "Footprint South America", and they said it's probably the most complete and up-to-date guide out there. Had a look at LP's "South America on a Shoestring" along the way, and even though it's supposedly only OK, it was definitely more informative than "Footprint Peru, Bolivia & Ecuador". Get those books if you don't mind the bulkiness!
Not for Backpackers or anyone else.......2005-08-29
Although this book is supposedly specifically for Backpackers, it is printed in large type on heavy, glossy paper with lots of big color photos, all of which just add bulk. The venerable South American Handbook, also from Footprint, weighs not much more and covers the whole continent. This new book is also short on info ... only 8 accomodations listings in La Paz, vs. about 50 in the SA Handbook. And there is no listing at all for Iquitos, one of Peru's largest cities, or Cajamarca, one of the historically most significant. I have used the SAH extensively, and thought this new book would be at least as informative for the three countries covered .... what a disappointment. Cannot recommend it.

Reply to 'A reader from La Paz'.......2002-04-09
I was saddened by this review. As author of Footprint's Bolivia Handbook, and someone who lived in La Paz for a while, I have a deep affection for the country and its people. The accusation that I "speak in a very bad way" about the country is deeply offensive and shows that the reader hasn't bothered to read the text thoroughly before sharing their views. This guidebook is by no means perfect - no guidebook every can be - but at least it strives to be honest. Sometimes, unfortunately, certain people take exception to this policy.
for the beginning and seasoned traveller. . ........2001-02-13
I really enjoyed this travel book: Even though my family-in-law is Bolivian, this book still offered new information (to them and me) and really helped me get around. Lots of practical info on banks and restaurants for the seasoned traveller. The best part is all the historical and cultural information which is an interesting read in itself. Very up-to-date with funny descriptions of some of the more adventurous activities in Bolivia. Highly recommended.
A top drawer travel guide.......2000-05-12
A top drawer travel guide should not only give you reliable facts and information on the country you are going to, but paint pictures, tell stories and capture your imagination while stimulating your desire to go and explore.
The Bolivia handbook does all of these and more. Murphy's section on Culture is the best anthropological treatment in travel handbooks on the market today. He has a few week areas, but they are minor. His section "Responsible Tourism" (Eco-Tourism) could stand more in depth treatment of the state of ecology.
And, a personal area of irritation, especial for a "Yank", is Murphy (who is English) elected to use only the metric system, forgetting that most Americans have yet to grasp metric conversion. Thus, Lake Titicaca covers 8,300 sq. km., rises 5m each season and have temperature that get down to -25C. Hum. Recommended.
It is very deficient.......1999-07-27
I didn't like the author's view, respecting Bolivia, because it doesn't give areal idea about what this country really is, I think this guy had a very bad trip to Bolivia because he speaks in a very bad way about it. I advise to all of you for not to buy this book, it is really trash.

Blood, guts n' fun..........2007-09-15
This is a fun book. Kids will enjoy learning about the battles and adults could find it a pleasant, easy march over familiar turf.
Written for young adults in standard prose and diction, it details seven major battles throughout history: Metaurus, Hastings, Agincourt, Teutoburg, two obscure battles involving the Swiss and some curious innovations that have now become commonplace (don't know the names for these but they're humerous anecdotes), Trenton and Waterloo.
There is a surprising amount of historical accuracy to the details and nomenclature to where an adult can be entertained if they're a student of warfare. Three of the battles (Metaurus and the two Swiss campaigns) are obscure enough to be new finds. And I especially enjoyed the first involving a roman general Nero and Hasdrubal, Hannibal's brother.
There's also a healthy amount of fantastic violence and gore.
The writing has a dramatic flair; its style is never dry. It toes overly dramatic sometimes but on the whole its wet bark makes for a fast and fun read.
While no Steven Pressfield or Wallace Breem, Albert Orbaan has taken a vast understanding of military warfare and applied it to a generous, fun read that'll challenge kids and entertain adults. It straddles the line enough to be out of place with both but in the end is worth picking up for the sheer enjoyment of it. Or, if you have a hyper kid, it'll inspire them to go in the backyard with a sword and musket.

Product Description
A city dog has to remain healthy with limited exercise, should be bred to live with people, cannot have such sharp hearing that a car backfire is actually painful or so high strung that the normal hustle-bustle of city life is unendurable. In this timely resource book, Pat Farley shares her decades as a "working mother" of an array of city dogs, helps readers choose the right dog for them and their lifestyle, offers "shop smart" tips for buying pet products, and presents a viable training program for both puppies and adopted older dogs. She guides readers through "city" manners, street smarts, travelling, and every aspect of an active urban lifestyle for dogs and their owners. The book also includes a chapter on handling illness and emergencies and a great appendix of resources. This comprehensive guide tells you everything you need to know to select, raise, and live with a happy dog in the city -- including Dog Breed Selection Chart, Personal Pet Selection Tests, Emergency Help Kit, Travel Resources, and more.
Customer Reviews:
A Helpful Guide for Dog Owners.......2000-03-30
Having recently re-read The Evan's Guide to a Civilized City Canine, Job Michael Evans, it was interesting to follow it by reading Dog About Town, Patricia Farley.
Since Job Michael Evans is one of my favorite authors, I won't even attempt to compare writing. What is fun is comparing the information contained in the two books. Surprisingly little has changed since 1989 when Civilized City Canine was published. Unfortunate, as we would hope that in eleven years we would have made more progress in the number of places where our canine friends are welcomed.
The author's breed descriptions for those dogs that are candidates for city living appear to be accurate. The personality test was fun, but I was unable to locate any special guidance on using the responses to help determine breed choices.
Lots of good information is included on city living with your pet: training; activities you can participate in with your dog; travel and boarding; going to the country with your pet; those necessary walks.
I found the editing to be somewhat incomplete as words appear to be missing out of some of the sentences. Page 52 leaves me puzzled as to whether what is included is as the author wrote or if some important information was edited out. For clarification, you could show your dog at more than 100 shows, placing third in a class of three at all the shows, and never have a Champion. You must win your class to win points toward the Championship. The paragraph on hip dysplasia also seems to be a bit confusing.
Overall, I found this book easy reading about the challenges of city living with your dog. With better editing, I would have given it a 4 star rating. All dog owners should find it fun reading. For city dwellers, perhaps necessary reading.
This book saved me!.......1999-08-27
After moving to Washington, D.C. from a rural area, I became very lonely. "Dog About Town" helped me get a great companion, a Corgy. You learn how to choose the right dog, but, more importantly, you learn how to take care of it. I highly recommend this book!
Extremely helpful.......1999-08-20
I recently moved to Boston, and I thought I would be resigned to only being able to have goldfish or a cat for a pet. But then I stumbled across this book, and after reading it for a few minutes in the store, I knew that I could get the dog I wanted after all. The author is very concise and direct with her suggestions. I hd thought about going right to the pet store to buy the cutest puppy I could find, but after reading this book, I have realized that may not be the best course of action. I now hope to adopt a greyhound, and this book is going to be immeasurably helpful in raising and living with my new friend. I am so glad that somebody finally wrote this book-I think it will help a lot of people.

No Stone Unturned.......2000-05-23
"The Official Price Guide to American Indian Arrowheads" by John L. Stivers stands leagues apart from any would-be competitors before or since its publication. Other attempts at such a guide fail miserably in comparison to the quality and importance achieved in this work. In the study and identification of every type of stone tip, this complete reference guide to the widely popular sport of collecting artifacts from America's Stone Age leaves no stone unturned. Such a long awaited comprehensive guide to one of America's most fascinating pastimes is appropriate and invaluable fare for both the young and old alike, from absolute beginner to studied academic. With the use and aid of this book, anyone can follow their interest in American arrowheads as far as they choose or need to. A brief and fascinating introduction covers the history of the collection of American artifacts, guidelines for the amateur archaeologist, advice for the collector, and instructions on how to use the guide, complete with easy to understand point and blade charts that clearly illustrate the different styles that are a point or blade's identifying marks. A concise but thorough glossary defines the terms that are used in the impressive 531 page, 18 chapter catalogue of the most thorough and responsible representation of the wide range of types and quality of American arrowheads ever compiled. Hundreds of photographs of every type of American arrowhead found, and a fascinating array of other stone tools, provide for endless hours of fascinating perusal. The resources section offers a valuable reference for the hobbyist or academic alike looking to further their study or collection of stone tips and tools, with a listing of auctions and auctioneers, collectors included in the guide, shows and events where stone artifacts can be found, as well as pertinent organizations, periodicals, and sources of reproduction and restoration. John L. Stivers' work, unlike any other existing attempts at similar guides, is a fascinating and invaluable guide that will be very much at home on the family bookshelf right next to the World Almanac, Encyclopedia Brittannica, and Webster's Dictionary.

Book Description
In order to obtain a cohesive and comprehensive understanding of Cuban society, Felipe Arocena and William Noland spent three years interviewing and photographing the people of this nation in Cuba and in Miami. This book is the product of that interval during which the two men gathered narratives, reflections and life stories of both Cubans living in their own country and those residing in Miami. Collectively the dialogues assist in answering questions such as: What is life like for the Cuban people after nearly 50 years of Castro's rule? How do those Cubans who emigrate to Miami manage? And, how do these two groups relate to one another?
These accounts, all published in the interviewees' native Spanish, provide a synopsis of a single country that has been divided in two. The conversations recorded with people living in Cuba represent three distinct groups; those employed by the state, which practically all formal employment is; individuals working in occupations not tied to the government, such as musicians, farmers or those in the businesses owned by foreign investors; and the Cubans supporting themselves with semi-clandestine or completely clandestine activities.
The Miami Cubans interviews are of a range of unique people from the executive director of the National Cuban-American Foundation, high school teenagers, the manager of one of the most successful stores in Miami, and workers in a tobacco factory.
