Book Description

The first comprehensive review of the occurrence and explanation of seed dormancy in grasses is presented in this volume. An understanding of seed dormancy is of considerable significance to world agriculture and the global economy, since grasses are a principal source of food for humankind and play an essential role in stabilizing the land surface of much of the globe. Experimental evidence is considered in depth for a single species, the wild oat (Avena fatua), probably the most widely studied species for understanding seed dormancy in the plant kingdom. The evidence for this species is compared with other examples among the Gramineae to reach some general conclusions about the nature of seed dormancy in grasses.

    Description:
In the semi-arid rangelands of central Argentina, heavy continuous grazing has produced shrub encroachment and a decrease in the abundance of valuable perennial grasses. The objective of this work was to study the effect of shrub cover on germination, dormancy and viability of buried and unburied seeds of Piptochaetium napostaense, a native perennial grass abundant in the pastures and highly preferred by grazing animals. Field germination of seeds was rare, especially on the soil surface, probably due to high temperatures and lack of humidity. At the end of the field experiment, seeds were collected, tested for viability and incubated in the lab under optimal conditions for germination. Viability was high for all treatments (93-98%) indicating that seeds were not affected by the very high temperatures (up to 55^oC) measured in the field. Seeds that had been buried between shrubs showed the highest rate of germination in the lab (56%); germination of seeds buried under shrub cover was relatively low (18%); and seeds that had remained in the litter layer showed poor germination ( <3%). These results may be related to disruption of dormancy owing to different temperature regimes among treatments. Exogenous dormancy due to the presence of glumes seems to be the main dormancy mechanism in this species.

5 out of 5 stars Top New England Guidebook.......2001-01-28

In preparation for a special trip to New England, I reviewed all the New England guides I could find. This was the best. We stayed at five locations mentioned, and had a great experience at each. The description provided was on target. I would trust the simple inclusion by the authors of any property as an indication that it is a good bet for an excellent experience. I also found this to be the most up-to-date of the reviews.

          Book Description

Hidden Highways of Northern California shows the way to adventure along lost highways, through small towns, and in wilderness areas. Nine journeys are detailed, from Route 1 along the coast to Highway 395 high in the Sierras. The history and character of Northern California are revealed on themed drives through the Gold Rush region and the Wine Country. A special urban drive through the neighborhoods of San Francisco is also featured. Presented in a multidimensional layout with illustrations, photos, maps, and sidebars, each chapter follows a single route, as the itinerary moves swiftly from point to point. Richard Harris and Ray Riegert spice up the narrative with articles on local lore, historical facts, and modern curiosity. They recommend distinctive hotels and restaurants and suggest side-trip excursions that veer off the beaten track to areas few travelers ever see. Readers can plan trips to coincide with unique events and festivals like the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival, the Calaveras County Jumping Frog Jubilee, or the Mendocino County Woolgrowers' Barbecue and Sheep Dog Trials. Local and specific AAA maps -- trusted for accuracy and usefulness -- are included.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for history buffs and travellers.......2003-06-23

If you're a history buff, a parent who wants to plan interesting weekend excursions, or a "travelholic", this is an excellent resource. In particular, motorcyclists will find that this book provides excellent answers to questions like "where would I like to ride today?".

The book has state historical markers, points of interest, places of historical content and "fun things to do". It's hard to imagine anyone actually travelling to all these places; this book must have been a true labor of love.

Two issues. One, I wish the index were more comprehensive. It's sometimes difficult to find a particular item. Two, I wish the maps were a bit more detailed. It would've been nice to have a state map showing all the regions at the front of the book. On the other hand, you should *always* have a real map on any trip you take.

This book is truly wonderful and I highly recommend it for history buffs and travellers in California.

As a close friend of the author with a small part in the publication of this book, we laughed and cried through its transformation from a life lived to words printed on a page. I can attest to its incredibly open, honest and personal rendering of the healing achieved through the unconditional love given by the complete cast of quirky characters. Come share the drama, heartbreak and humor of this loving tribute to Sharon's incredible cats. An extraordinary book written in simple, heartfelt language that we can all understand, this is a must read for those who know the love of pets.

Children will delight in sliding Sad Pussycat¹s face along as he imagines what it would be like to be different animals. 1 out of 5 stars worst childrens book ever!.......2004-01-01

I was very disappointed with "Happy Cat, Me" and the book actually became a family joke to tell new friends. How dare we use such poor language in the books we read children. Sure, the book is playful and cute in its own way but it is a gramatical nightmare for a small child learning to speak or read. Not one page of this book made logical sense! I was very disappointed to see this book was considered a "Schoolastic book" It leaves me asking only one question...what on earth does "bunny cat no eat bunny green lunch" mean?!!?!?!

1 out of 5 stars An awful book.......2004-01-01

If I could give this book zero stars I would. As both a teacher and parent I believe that this book is terrible. In addition to the fact that the cat head is difficult to move, the grammar used in the book makes the story sound like a poor translation from another language. Reading is meant to teach and reinforce proper English. The book includes pages such as "Warm sheep. Cozy. Suppose me could a Sheepy-cat be. (Not!)" My friends and I got a kick out of it as adults because it is such a poor book. I would urge people against sharing this book with children.

                            1 out of 5 stars disappointing book.......2003-12-27

My one-year-old daughter who loves pop-up and motion books got this for Christmas, but it is a real disappointment. The cat heads do not move easily for adults, much less for toddlers. Perhaps there is some trick to making them move more easily but the book did not come with instructions.

                              4 out of 5 stars A nice little book.......2002-04-19

Gardening was a popular hobby for some of the Colonials, and they adapted native plants to their gardens, imported old favorites, and avidly traded new discoveries. The focus here is on Colonial Williamsburg and the Southern colonies rather than the Northeast.

This was an interesting little book. It would have been nice if it had been printed on better quality paper. Especially enjoyable for native and "old" plant enthusiasts.

I liked this collection of pcitures of stars eating birthday and anniversary cake. There are so many pictures and they're all taken on the set. I decided to get this instead of those ridiculously expensive greeting cards.

                                                  Book Description

                                                  A Life in Hiding

When the German army occupied Holland, Annie de Leeuw was eight years old. Because she was Jewish, the occupation put her in grave danger-she knew that to stay alive she would have to hide. Fortunately, a Gentile family, the Oostervelds, offered to help. For two years they hid Annie and her sister, Sini, in the cramped upstairs room of their farmhouse.

Most people thought the war wouldn't last long. But for Annie and Sini -- separated from their family and confined to one tiny room -- the war seemed to go on forever.

In the part of the marketplace where flowers had been sold twice a week-tulips in the spring, roses in the summer-stood German tanks and German soldiers. Annie de Leeuw was eight years old in 1940 when the Germans attacked Holland and marched into the town of Winterswijk where she lived. Annie was ten when, because she was Jewish and in great danger of being cap-tured by the invaders, she and her sister Sini had to leave their father, mother, and older sister Rachel to go into hiding in the upstairs room of a remote farmhouse.

Johanna de Leeuw Reiss has written a remarkably fresh and moving account of her own experiences as a young girl during World War II. Like many adults she was innocent of the German plans for Jews, and she might have gone to a labor camp as scores of families did. "It won't be for long and the Germans have told us we'll be treated well," those families said. "What can happen?" They did not know, and they could not imagine.... But millions of Jews found out.

Mrs. Reiss's picture of the Oosterveld family with whom she lived, and of Annie and Sini, reflects a deep spirit of optimism, a faith in the ingenuity, backbone, and even humor with which ordinary human beings meet extraordinary challenges. In the steady, matter-of-fact, day-by-day courage they all showed lies a profound strength that transcends the horrors of the long and frightening war. Here is a memorable book, one that will be read and reread for years to come.

I recommend this book, The Upstairs Room to anyone who likes a good book. This book takes place during the Holocaust. I think this book is the best, I have ever read. It was full of excitement, and history. It tells about a little girl and her sister who have to go into hiding with different families. If you read and like the Diary of Anne Frank you will love this book. The diary of Anne frank was a true story and this is also a true story it's based on the girls life.

3 out of 5 stars The Upstairs Room .......2007-03-13

The Upstairs Room, by Joanna Riess is an interesting book. The book takes place in the time of the holocaust. Annie and her family are Jewish, so they are desperate to find safety and refuge. Annie and her sister, Sini, are sent to live with a non-Jewish family of farmers. Each passing day Annie and Sini get more and more restless, hoping for the war to stop. Sometimes while reading the book you might feel as though you are going to fall asleep, but then at other parts you can't seem to put down the book! Joanna Riess used too much description; also the plot never seemed to move on. For instance, in one part of the book it went on for pages, describing what Annie saw out the backroom window. In almost half of the book, The Upstairs Room, Annie and her sister, Sini, were in the upstairs room of the Oosterveld's house. However, when it did move on it was fascinating! In another part of the story the Germans came to the Oosterveld's house looking for Jews. This is a book about the war through the eyes of a little girl, sitting in a room all day waiting for the war to end, waiting to be free. It's inspiring and heart warming to all. This book has some inspiring moments and some snooza-paloza parts. The Upstairs Room has its boring moments and its exiting and thrilling moments. Overall The Upstairs Room is a fine book. Ages 10 and up.

4 out of 5 stars The upstairs room.......2007-02-07

There is this girl named Annie who is Jewish and has to go hiding in someone elses home because Hitler hates Jews and is in charge at that time. Annie and her sister Sini go and live with the Hanninks for a while because a German suspects that Mr. Hannink is hiding Jews. Mr. Hannink sends Annie and Sini to go and live with the Oostervelds who are really nice people. Annie finds out that the Allies and is soon going to be free. Opoe, Johan, and Dienjte (the people who took care of Annie and her sister )went to go see the Canadians. Sini got on top of the tanks and started kissing the soldiers after that she went home. Annie comes back after a few years and brought her kids and remembered the war and started to cry. I really enjoyed this book although it was cruel how the Germans treated the Jews.

4 out of 5 stars Life in Hiding!.......2006-11-28

This book, unlike other books about this topic, has a happy ending, which I like. It has thrilling parts, like when the German soldiers came and searched the Oostervelds' house. It was a short, easy read that you could put down, but not abandon. If you are interested in the topic of WWII you would like this book.

2 out of 5 stars the upstairs room!.......2006-11-28

I would only recommend this book to people who want an easy read. This is because it was boring, every page was the same and there was little excitement. You always knew what was going to happen next, the author's way of writing was very plain and there was little detail. Every chapter was about living in hiding and how bored they got. Once in awhile something exciting happened, like the German soldiers came to the house. It was hard to concentrate because I didn't find the book interesting. Also, I didn't find any connections to the characters. They were both older. Also, I have never hid with my life on the line. I would recommend this book to people looking for something easy to ready, with little excitement.

The Second World War is over. Annie and her sister Sini, who have been hiding from the Germans for almost three years, are free again. They leave the hamlet of Usselo and the Oosterveld family that had sheltered them and return to their hometown. Their father also survived as did their sister, Rachel. The Journey Back tells of what can happen to members of a family, Jews in this case, when reunion demonstrates they no longer know each other. The book speaks for all people at all times and is as moving as its predecessor, The Upstairs Room.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting but bland sequel.......2004-07-15

It seems like many sequels to books about the Shoah are hit-and-miss; sometimes there will be a gripping account of a return to life, healing, love, and a semblance of normalcy, but more often than not it's just an ordinary undistinguished account relating what happened after the War. This book falls into the latter category.

Unlike many sequels of this nature, here the immediate family have more or less all stayed alive and are reunited soon after the War ends. Mr. de Leeuw and the three sisters (who appear to each be about ten years apart in age) have been in hiding, not camps or ghettos. They don't bear the same kind of intense and painful scars from that experience as someone who was in a ghetto or camp would. They were in relative safety, and Holland was no Poland or Hungary. Mrs. de Leeuw, while dead, died in the first book in a hospital because she had been very sick for a long time, not because she was murdered by the Nazis. The de Leeuws have lost friends, neighbours, and relatives, but the immediate family has not been split up, nor do they have to spend time in displacement, rehabiliation, or refugee centres, immigrate, trek across foreign lands on their way back to their native Holland, or wait around in agony waiting for word of the other members of their immediate family. They have much less to deal with than other people in post-Shoah sequels usually do. The most serious problems in here are having to get used to living together as a family again, Annie's overbearing new stepmother Magda and Magda's 18 year old daughter Nell, Sini's constant dancing with soldiers at night and her fights with her father over it, and Rachel's conversion to Christianity and the family strife that is causing. Maybe she did have a spiritual epiphany when the family who were hiding her took her to church with them for Xmas services, but it just seems tragic that someone who survived the Shoah, who had to spend those years in hiding instead of living a normal adult life all on account of her religion, would embrace a new religion instead of taking pride in her own religion once she's free to practise it again.

It's an interesting story, but really anticlimactic and overly domestic after all which went before. This recounting of what happened afterwards just isn't as gripping as the accounts of people who lost most of their families, didn't return to their native lands, or had it much worse than merely being in hiding in a relatively safe nation-state like Holland.

4 out of 5 stars Journey Back : an amazing story.......2004-04-02

This book is about a girl how has just survived the holacost. She is learning how to get back to her normal routine. In the begining, this book is a bit depressing but as it gose on she finds new friends and stays in touch with old ones. I think this book is great because the charters are so belivable & realistic. The first chapter or so were boring but then people started coming back from the camps and some didn't. This book is an amazing piece of literature.

Hitler hated Jews. He started World War II. Every time he came across a Jew, he would kill them. Annie de Leeuw and her family were Jews. Her whole family had to go hiding. Annie and her sister Sini hid in the Oosterveld's house. The Oostervelds lived in Usselo, a very small town in Holland. Annie and Sini grew very close with Johan, Dientje, and Opoe (the Oostervelds). After the war ended, Annie and Sini had to go back to their real home. Their mother was dead. Their oldest sister, Rachel, was back too. She lived with another family during the war. When everyone was home, including the girls' father, nothing was back to normal. Every night, Sini went out and danced with the soldiers. Rachel became a Christian, and she spent most of her time reading the Bible. Annie's father was always distracted. He sold cows. Sini left to be a nurse in a different town. Then, Ies (Annie's father) decided that Annie needed a mother, not just her sisters. He decided to marry a woman that had lost her husband in the war. She even had a daughter. Ies told Rachel to go to a different town, because she and his wife-to-be were just a couple of years apart, and he said that it would never work. After Ies and Magda (his new wife) got married, Nel (Magda's daughter) went to finishing school. Annie was always home with Magda, which she now called Mother. Annie could never seem to please her. Annie always visited Johan, Dientje, and Opoe too. They treated her like their own family. Magda would not let her visit for a long time, though. One day, she would probably be with them again, and it would be for the rest of her life.

I thought that this book was very good. "German soldiers. They knocked down the door, stormed in, marching and stamping and shouting to the rhythm of their boots." This was one of Annie's dreams. The author always made Annie scared, and that was what made it interesting. She always thought of the Germans, she was so afraid of them.

"Later, Johan, later." No matter what happened, Johan was always the first person that Annie called to. When she was afraid, happy, or sad, she would always think of Johan. It shows that Annie always thought of her family first, and her family was Johan, Dientje, and Opoe.

I liked at lot of parts in this book. I liked the parts when Annie went to the Oosterveld's house. She would always be happy, and she wouldn't have to worry about any German soldiers trying to kill her because Johan would be there, and she would always be safe.

In the 4th grade, i read the prequel to this book, THE UPSTAIRS ROOM. Now, 4 years later, i read THE JOURNEY BACK. The first couple chapters quickly refreshed my memory of what happened during WWII to Annie, and i feel they would have sufficed as an introduction had i not read THE UPSTAIRS ROOM. this book proves that although a treaty was signed, the war was no yet over for the people involved.

                                                  3 out of 5 stars Jaclyn's Book Review--2nd hr.......2002-12-19

Annie de Leeuw, a young Jewish girl, has been hiding during WWII for almost 3 years with her older sister Sini at Johan Oosterveld's house with his wife Dentje, and Opoe, his mother. Now the war is over and Annie can finally be together with her family!
But things just aren't the same at her house, Rachel (Annie's eldest sister) has found a new religion, Sini is out all night dancing, her father is getting remarried, and her mother had died during the war. Annie starts finding herself missing the Oosterveld's...will things work out?
I thought this book was a little confusing at times. The plot--returing home--is a little dull also. Though I think the author has good description & her openings have a good start. She keeps you hoping that something good will happen to Annie, and is even a little suspensful.
People who might like reading this book would propbably be people who like reading about a persons feelings, or read the first book (which I had not),or just people who don't like reading action books.^_^
