Good guide, some information dated........2007-01-04

I've always enjoyed the eclectic nature of Moon guides and the Florida Gulf Coast guide is no exception. In hind sight I should have looked for an everglades guide but this one sufficed. A lot of the information is now dated because the last year's hurricane season. the biggest problem I ran into was places either being closed or having reduced hours. I also found the organization of the Everglades informations a bit scattered. Still I'd recommend this guide.

recommended for families with children, snappy writing and comprehensive accurate info. not aimed at east german backpackers, or the senior set. hard to fault and up to date.
a little easy on the sprawl and excesses of naples, and not enuf cautions about the 3 main hazards of florida vacations,
which are in no particular order : 1. heat/humidity/storms and heat related problems 2. it is gonna be expensive 3. take your brain along and think about crime, crowds and traffic hazards.
otherwise hard to fault an excellent very valuable up to date work written by a real grown up with verve and snap
buy this and not the brand name stuff

A Marvelous Guide to Paradise.......2006-02-21

Having lived for 6 years on the Florida Gulf Coast, I find Ms Reiley's Guide is something of a delight to one plagued with what to show the next out-of-towner, or what to see myself that might be new and refreshing. The book is admirably terse, factually impeccable, and covers in good detail a considerable portion of the Paradise of the West Coast of Florida. The clear prose is peppered with Ms Reiley's reactions to people, places, and things, some which she clearly enjoyed, others of which failed to meet her mark. Her language delights this aging Sophist, while staying within the bounds of good taste. The black and white photos well illustrate the text. The maps are too small for driving, but large enough to help find the desired location.
A simply delightful guide to Paradise

Cool Climate Reference.......2006-07-04

This is a very good reference book for growing grapes in cool climate regions. The section on the geopgraphical analysis of grape growing introduces the concept of LTI (latitude temperature index) which is another useful metric to compare climates. Soils and climates are tied together in the analysis. The diagrams on training and pruning are very well done. This is one of the few books that references the Sylvoz training method. The chapter on grape varieties has excellent color photographs with variety specific details. The one detail missing which can be crucial in some cool climate areas is some measure of winter hardiness (such as the 50% or 100% bud loss number). There is also good coverage of some of the more obscure cool climate varieties as well as rootstock characteristics.

A gem for the new grapegrower.......2000-01-10

As a complete beginner to viticulture I have found this book absolutely invaluable. It covers all aspects of cool-climate grapegrowing in a readable and accessible manner, with clear text and diagrams concerning site and variety selection, planting, establishment, pruning and training, pests and diseases, and winemaking. The section on grape varieties has excellent photographs, and a superb introduction gives an overview of the cooler grape-producing regions of the world. Written in New Zealand, this is however a "must" for all new grapegrowers, no matter where the "terroir". My copy is starting to show signs of over-use!

WARNING - This Book is for First Graders Only!.......2004-03-16

I ordered this book thinking it would provide a nice, concise biography of Ellen Ochoa, the famous Latina astronaut, for my 10 year old son. Unfortunately, the book consists almost entirely of pairs of facing pages, on one side displaying a color photo occupying a full page and on the other side a page with a single sentence 6 to 8 words long. The only exceptions to this are the first page, which has two sentences totaling 7 words in all, and the last page, which has 3 sentences of 7 or 8 words each. There is also a 4-word glossary at the end with 3 to 6 word long definitions of these words: astronaut, machines, space and train (the verb).

For you to grasp the level of this book, I need only quote the first few pages: "Meet Ellen Ochoa. She is an astronaut. Ellen had to train to be an astronaut. Ellen had to learn how to use many machines. She worked hard, but she had fun." You have now read the first 12 pages of this 24 page book! We don't get to find out when or where she was born, where she went to college or what degrees she earned, how long or where she trained for her mission(s), how long she worked at NASA, what the machines were she had to train on, or what trips she may or may not have taken into space.

The color photographs are beautiful. If you want a nice picture book to inspire 6 year olds to read their first simple sentences, this is your book. If you actually want your child to learn something about Ellen Ochoa, you'll have to look elsewhere!
