As Katie Letcher Lyle says, "The thrill of foraging is getting something for nothing." And, as she points out, it often does take you to beautiful places, from sandy beaches to wild flower-filled meadows and cool woods. Lyle crams a substantial amount into this field guide and cookbook. For 55 edibles, you learn what to look for, supported by drawings and some color photos, plus history, lore, and a recipe or two for each wild treasure. This book seems sturdy enough to survive many seasons in your backpack. Written for an American audience, it can also serve foragers in Canada and, to some degree, Europe, as it includes mushrooms, fruits, and greens found in this milieu as well.

Book Description

Edible plants grow wild along roadsides, in country fields, and in urban parks. All manner of leafy greens, mushrooms, and herbs that command hefty prices at the market are bountiful outdoors and absolutely free for the taking. But to enjoy them you must know how to recognize, when to harvest, and how to prepare and eat them. The Foraging Gourmet concentrates on the most commonly found of these wild comestibles, going beyond a field guide's description to provide folklore and mouth-watering recipes for each entry, such as wild asparagus pizza, fiddlehead soup, blackberry mousse, and elderberry pie. This fully illustrated guide is the perfect companion for hikers, campers, and anyone who enjoys eating the good food of the earth. With The Foraging Gourmet in hand you'll never walk through a field again without casting your eyes about with dinner in mind. (5 1/2 X 8 1/4, 224 pages, color photos, illustrations)

4 out of 5 stars The Foraging Fourmet.......2000-08-09

Dear Reader,

If you enjoy outdoor cooking, and foraging for your own food then this is a very good book to own. "The Foraging Gourmet" has ten chapters including fungi: mushrooms, green things, nuts, flowers & herbs. This book has black and white drawings for almost every plant that is used in the recipes. It also contains 16 pages of color photos. Every plant in this book is given a description, habitat, season, history, and lore. A description of how it looks, tastes, and smells (if there is a smell). The author describes the habitat of where each plant grows. This book teaches what the best seasons are for each plant. It also tells of what different minerals each plant contains. The history describes who first started eating it. The lore tells about cures (if any) it was used for. Other helpful uses of plants are talked about such as dyes. Throughout the book there are educational side notes about a variety of subjects that I found very interesting. This book contains 195 pages and is a very good investment.

      Book Description

The Wilderness War is the eagerly awaited fourth volume in Allan W. Eckert's acclaimed series of narratives, The Winning of America, the violent and monumental description of the wresting of the North American continent from the Indians.

Two hundred fifty years had elapsed since the Five Nations, the greatest of the Indian tribes, ceased their continual warfare among themselves and banded together for mutual defense. Their union had created the feared and formidable Iroquois League; their empire stretched from Lake Champlain, across New York to Niagara Falls. Theirs was a remarkable form of representative government that presaged our own, and their wealth lay in the vast, beautiful lands abundant with crops. As warriors they were unsurpassed—even the depredations of the recent French and Indian War could not diminish their prowess.

But by 1770 the white men living in their land were fighting among themselves again, and war came once more to the Iroquois land.

The Wilderness War begins in 1763 (where the second book in this series, Wilderness Empire, concluded with the English victory over the French in the French and Indian War) and continues through the American Revolution to 1780, by which time the Iroquois League had been ruptured and the Indians dispossessed of their homelands.

Their defeat and humiliation occurred despite the valor of their famous war chief Thayendanegea, better known as Joseph Brant, who had allied his tribes with the one man the Iroquois loved and trusted, Sir William Johnson, Colonial Superintendent of Indian Affairs, and subsequently with Johnson's son and nephew, leaders of the Tory forces in New York.

Based on an abundance of primary sources: original letters and notes, diaries and journals, deeds, wills, military records, Indian tribal records, logbooks, newspapers and magazines and government reports, and dominated by the compelling character of Chief Joseph Brant, The Wilderness War gives a factual account (sustained with the suspense and pace of first-rate fiction) of the last years of the Iroquois Empire and the first years of the American nation. Allan W. Eckert has molded the raw facts of history into a moving, perceptive and penetrating narrative. It is filled with the pathos and action, humanity and savagery which were all a part of survival on the expanding American frontier.

      5 out of 5 stars Great series!.......2007-07-28

This is one of the weaker books in Eckert's series, but it was still a good read. I'd recommend it for any Eckert fan, or any other American-History fan. You should definately read the other books in the series!!!

      5 out of 5 stars Well written.......2007-07-24

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is well written and factually correct to my knowledge. I grew up in the area where many of these events took place and learned about them in my elementary school days in a dry and factual way. This book made the events come to life in an interesting and facinating way for me.

5 out of 5 stars The Wilderness War.......2006-07-18

This is an extremely well written book, that is easy to understand. It gives interesting excerpts about the main characters, not just the cut and dry facts about the Revolutionary War taking place on the Pennsylvania and New York frontier. The author tries to give a fair review of the battles taking place from both sides of the war, but is perhaps a little biased in favor of the American Patriots. The book has several maps throughout that help a great deal in following the battles. My only disappointment is that the book ends when the Sullivan Campaign ends, which was not really the end of the Revolutionary War. Only a paragraph in the epilogue refers to Joseph Brant continuing the warfare, as if he alone battled on after Sullivan's campaign. Yet, what was written to that point was the best I have read, so far on the Frontier battles.

5 out of 5 stars Gripping historical narration...better than fiction.......2004-12-13

Eckert is a master at narrating and telling history in as gripping and compelling a fashion as you will find. This entire series is so extremely interesting and filled with drama and information you will not learn in school.

This book, Wilderness War, takes the reader from the end of the French Indian War, through the Revolutionary War in America and tells the tale of the Indian involvement. During this time, the Iroquois League is ripped apart and those strong Indian nations dispossessed of their homelands.

Despite the leadership and commitment of the chief Thayendanegea, their war chief (also known as Joseph Brant), and despite the manueverings and alliance with Sir William Johnson, the mighty Iroquois are defeated.

I would recommend Eckert to anyone desiring a more in depth look at the Indian Wars and the overall history of the Eastern United States.

5 out of 5 stars The series is the most enjoyable reading I've ever done........1999-05-25

I bought the series some years ago and have lost one and would like to replace it. I would also like to have my books autographed by Mr. Eckert.

I have recommended this writer to many friends and have bought the soft cover prints for several.

5 out of 5 stars Some books stay with you after you have read them........2000-07-14

This one has stayed with me. As a nature-lover and one interested in Native American culture, I walked away from this book feeling I gained something by reading it. It is neither dense nor preachy, so it makes for an easy read. _Mohawk Blood_ is written by a descendent of the great Mohawk leader Joseph Brant, but the focus of the book is not past battles or politics. Rather, almost in a short story form, the author shares some timeless lessons learned from Brant, describes interaction with the natural world in a breathtaking manner, and touches on the socio-economic status of Native families. I could not put this book down.

This book is the 2nd in a larger series called "The Frontier People of America". These people did the rough work of creating a civilization, and for their reward were cheated by eastern land companies and now renounced by the modern culture of our nation. It's the Indians who are now the "good guys" as if such an easy distinction could be made. Van Every is an excellent author and lays out the facts about atrocities and achievements of both sides of the frontier struggle. The hardships the pioneers face should give us pause when we complain about our alleged "problems".

I have an out of print copy of Helmut Pinter's Labyrinth Fish book, copyrighted 1984 and though I have found it a great source for imformation, it was lacking in some areas...most importantly pictures. Well, this book by Horst Linke more than makes up for what my other reference lacks. There is a picture of every single fish covered...in fact, the author, who appears to have done extensive research in both Asia and Africa, makes it clear that only the rarest speices for which no picture could be provided have been left out. For each species there is a map of orgination, care and breeding information and of course a picture. Better yet, each picture has the scentific name below, so no searching footnotes to be sure what it is you are looking at. Also, if you love Betta's, there's about 30 species covered AGAIN with pictures. I could find nothing negative to say. My interest lies with the Macropodus and Pseudosphromenus species and until reading this reference I had some confusion regarding the some of the different species. I also found it helpful that the author pictures hybrid speices that are common in the aquarium trade.

A very well written book that covers the identification, biotopes, general care and breeding of both the bubblenesting as well as the mouthbrooding species of the labyrinth fish in Asia and Africa. Horst Linke had done a lot of research and packed this volume with heaps of good stuff, including photos of more than 80 species of labyrinth fish (including over 30 betta species) and some very informative illustrations of these special fish and their natural habitats. Highly recommended for the wild betta enthusiast who wants to differentiate the Betta coccina from the Betta rutilans, or the Betta bellica from the Betta pugnax.

I was very pleased to recieve this book. It is clear, easy to read and has pictures of all the different types of Grourami's, Paradise Fish and Beta's and a few other species I did not even know were Labyrinth Fish. It has 175 pages of information and many, many pictures. It is the nicest book I have found yet on Labyrinth Fish. Happy Reading!

Picking up where typical field guides leave off, this handy reference takes an ecological approach, providing complete descriptions of 85 plants found in fields, open meadows, and along roadsides--from Ailanthus to Yucca--as well as wildlife communities associated with them. Written in an engaging manner, this book helps readers identify dry-land plants, discusses what other organisms, plant and animal, might be found in the same area, and explains why.

                                      Book Description

Mari Graña begins her account of an adventure that grew out of her desire to withdraw to the wild and that ends with a sense of homecoming and community: “I saw over a rise in a meadow a little stone cabin far in the distance. The landscape of the canyon—the rocky pine-covered ridges, the long wide meadow with the escarpment of Rowe Mesa rising in the background—suddenly became the place I had dreamed about.”

Once she had purchased the abandoned sheepherder's cabin on 240 remote acres of land in northern New Mexico, Graña began the work of making the cabin livable. With the help of local villagers, she plastered the mud walls, installed a cook-stove, and cleaned the rats out of her storehouse. She began to meet her neighbors and to learn the human history of the area. As she became familiar with the beauty, drama, and danger of the natural environment, she also learned about legendary local criminals and ancient land swindles. Writing out of her direct experience of this landscape and culture, Graña vividly describes a world where the village church comes alive on saints' days and the spirit of Begoso Cabin's builder, Natividad Ortiz, lingers still.

A desire to withdraw to the wild leads to renovating an abandoned sheepherder's cabin and an understanding of the human history and natural environment.

Begoso Cabin is the account of a woman's experiences living in a remote canyon in the mountains of northern New Mexico. The author has described the land, the animals, the people in vivid detail. The book is replete with pleasing morsels of historical research beginning with the Pecos Indians who once hunted the area, the region's importance as the entry into Mexican territory on the Santa Fe Trail, the takeover of the Southwest by the United States, the legal hassles over the old Spanish land grant on which the Begoso cabin is located, to today's village customs and economy. Begoso Cabin partakes of a genre of women's writing that is characterized by such authors as Annie Dillard, Dorothy Gilman, Gretel Ehrlach and others who have retreated to the wilds to write their stories. Begoso Cabin is a good read, full of historical, and often humorous, anecdotes, sensitve landscape description, and sociological commentary on village life rendered in a vibrant and poetic prose.
