I looked for many books out there for my first visit to Paris and this one turned out to be really great. It divides the city well into manageable parts and also has nice outlined walking tours of certain areas to get an overall view of the city. Overall, good information and very useful for a first visit to Paris.

This was a great book for visiting paris. The pictures were very nice. The maps are very helpful for getting around to the interesting sites. The decriptions were interesting and informative. I would highly suggest this book if you are visiting paris.

Great, comprehensive guide to Paris.......2007-08-23

I thought this was a very useful guide to start with. It covers everything from history and culture to how to get around Paris and of course what to do and see as well as where to eat, etc. The pictures are absolutely lovely, and the Paris metro guide in the back comes in handy. The maps could be more detailed, though. For those who can manage French, I would suggest buying an actual guide in French like Le Guide du Routard. No pictures there, but a lot more information.

Pre-trip planning or armchair traveling.......2007-08-17

An excellent book for pre trip planning or leaving in the hotel room to check out the next days sights or review what was seen that day. Great photos, good detailed explanations of major sights. Unlike a Knopf book there is not a lot of pages dedicated to history or architecture or plants and animals. For the major sights like the Louvre the book will walk you through (11 pages devoted to the Louvre). Not strong on shopping or nightlife or less well known sights, the maps to the front of each geographic section are an overview but not great for street by street navigating.
An excellent book, good reading, great photos, not the book to take into the streets, but a definite book to have if you are going. Also great for an armchair traveller.

Nice series of books, these Old Master Portrait Drawings from Dover Art Library. Good material if you want to study portrait drawing. Good reproductions of the drawings. No text, only a short introduction from the publisher and titles with the drawings. The drawings say it all.

Outstanding pencil art.......2007-09-11

I'm a big fan of Sargent, but haven't had the privilege of seeing much of his pencil work in the grand collections of his paintings. This changes that. What a great book with so many beautiful pencil and charcoal portraits to enjoy. And the price? Who sells art books for this price anymore? Dover does an amazing job.

Sargent Captures the Personality and for any Life Drawing Student this will be a Wonderful Guide.......2007-06-25

As a student of Life Drawing and Portraiture (Carolyn's by Design) going back to her art, I had to have more of Sargent. I had just read the book, "Strapless" about the nortorious Madame X who was captured over and over again in Sargent's renderings. This compilation of renderings displays how attuned Sargent is with his representations of the personalities, how good his eye is at capturing the likeness.....how easily he appears to use minimal usage of his medium to obtain maximum expression in his subject.....This small Dover Art Library reference to Sargent gives you the medium and size as well as the name of the subject and the Intro gives you a great synopsis on Sargent's bio.....For any serious student of Sargent....you will refer back to this over and over again for technical knowledge as well as the inspirational beauty obtained from his work...I love him! Drawings or Sketches?.......2006-08-04

I was a little disappointed in this book. I expected detailed, color drawings. This book contains nice sketches of portraits that Sargent perhaps later painted. The reproductions are a little blurry, also. It is still a nice, inexpensive reference book to own.

This book is a real treasure! It is one of my favorites that I have read several times. I could really relate to the author's story. While reading I found that we had similar experiences but for me it was with my father. It made me reflect on my memories with him. I am grateful the author shared his experiences...I love that each chapter begins with a watercolor illustration of a flower with both the botanical and common name and a brief description of this flower...The author is a great storyteller and his book is positive and full of good energy. I found his words comforting: "Love is Eternal"....
