Very Little Useful Information.......2007-06-30

I know this a "portable guide" to the Dominican Republic, but still it is extremely bare bones and basic. It includes a decent section on Santo Domingo but absolutely nothing on Santiago - the country's second largest city. The rest of this thin volume includes only a couple of short sections on the DR's tourist areas - the North Coast, Punta Cana and Boca Chica. To someone attempting to explore anywhere else in the DR this book is virtually useless. Even for my brief one week trip to Puerto Plata I found nothing in this guide that I had already discovered on the Internet.

I am usually a fan of Frommer's guidebooks. But this one just doesn't cut it.

This booklet has all the basic travel facts for the Dominican Republic. That's --well-- basically it. Its main advantages are succinctness and portability; not information on the DR.

Good guide, but ..........2004-03-13

The Frommer's Dominican Republic guide is a good guide for anyone making a quick trip to the DR. The book does overexaggerates on the crime issue. Crime in the DR is relatively low, maybe even lower than in the USA. Other than that, the book is excellent.

In this second volume of interviews conducted by Nebraska judge Eli S. Ricker, he focuses on white eyewitnesses and participants in the occupying and settling of the American West in the nineteenth century. In the first decade of the twentieth century, as the Old West became increasingly distant and romanticized in popular consciousness, Eli S. Ricker (1842-1926) began interviewing those who had experienced it firsthand, hoping to write a multivolume series about its last days, centering on the conflicts between Natives and outsiders. For years Ricker traveled across the northern Plains, gathering information on and off reservations, in winter and in summer. Judge Ricker never wrote his book, but his interviews are priceless sources of information about that time and place, and they offer more balanced perspectives on events than were accepted at the time. Richard E. Jensen brings together all of Ricker's interviews with those men and women who came to the American West from elsewhere-settlers, homesteaders, and veterans. These interviews shed light on such key events as the massacre at Wounded Knee, the Little Bighorn battle, Beecher Island, Lightning Creek, the Mormon cow incident, and the Washita massacre. Also of interest are glimpses of everyday life at different agencies, including Pine Ridge, Yellow Medicine, and Fort Sill School; brief though revealing memoirs; and snapshots of cattle drives, conflicts with Natives, and the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad. Richard E. Jensen retired as a senior research anthropologist at the Nebraska State Historical Society. He is the editor of Charles Allen's From Fort Laramie to Wounded Knee: In the West That Was and Rolf Johnson's Happy As a Big Sunflower: Adventures in the West, 1876-1880, both available in Bison Books editions.

Good for Teaching.......2000-06-07

I teach a Western Literature Class, which is supposed to encompass the westward expansion into the North American continent. I found this book to a be a good outline for further research on subjects that applied to my class.

I used this book extensivly this spring for starting all my flowers and veggie. I found it easy to use and most flowers etc were listed. Great book for my library and I will use it in the future for sure.

This book is an excellent reference book describing seeds.
Giving the botanical name and common name. Most helpful with information on germination and were the seeds will grow best. And the the section that has thumbnail pictures
is excellent. The ease of using the paperback is all so great.

Excellent book, but NOTE..........2006-04-07

This book is exactly what I was looking for-- a no-nonsense, complete description of how to start each of the many kinds of seeds that I can never resist buy, collecting, or trading for.

One thing that people should note, though: the plants are listed in alphabetical order by their Latin names. There is an appendix that has the common names and what the Latin name is for each, but I can't imagine doing that for every single plant-- what a pain! I like to know both Latin and common names, so I was fine with this system. But for someone who's only familiar with the common names of plants, this book is going to be a lot harder to use. (On the bright side, learning the Latin names can be a lot of fun, so if you're at all open to the idea, go for it!)

Really and truly useful.......2004-08-10

I received this book as a gift from a friend that knew I love fabric and love color. I have spent hours (literally) thumbing through this book, enjoying the colors and enjoying the different decorating styles. My friends and I pulled it out at one of our Girls Only slumber parties (I'm 39) and spent 2 hours looking, and ooing and ahhing over it! I also got the nerve to paint my living room sage green, and I love it! Fun, fun, fun book!

This is one of my all time favorite books, I return to it time and again for ideas, ispiration and information. Andrew Lawson has written the definitive book on using color in the garden, there are wonderful examples of single color gardens, as well as using contrasting and co-ordinating colors with plants. He gives great suggestions for plants to use. The photographs in this book, taken by Lawson himself are superb. Every gardener will get something from this brilliant book.

new ways to look at color.......1999-10-26

Lawson does a better job of presenting and especially operationalizing color blending than any of ten books I looked at. He also consistently identifies what is in the glorious pictures. I am amazed by how many authors do not do this. It is an outstanding book for a beginner, that's me, to make a garden look like a pro did it, and for an experienced gardener to gain new perspectives and want to plant even more.

This is a lovely story about a gardener's son who helps bring peace between the sun and the moon, who have been quarreling so much there is no light in the world. It reminds that we should appreciate colors and cooperation. Fa-boo-lous!

An informative book, but misleading for sholarly studies........1998-01-13

Foolish Men! exhibits a thorough historical research of the time and political atmosophere surrounding Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz. However, there was too much focus on the bishops and other political figures (all men) and little discussion on Sor Juana. The title and the preface both suggest the text will delve into Sor Juana as "spiritual protagonist, educational prism, and a symbol for women," but there was little connection between the historical backgrounds of the bishops and its effects on Sor Juana, specifically how a new generation of hispanic women can see Sor Juana as a symbol of strength. Overall the text was well-written but lacked a strong argument connecting the theological past of Sor Juana with modern education. This text is more for the curious reader than the Sor Juana scholar.
