Customer Reviews:
Great information.......2007-10-05
I'm NOT a sailor yet, but am in the "early retirement planning" stage (meaning sailing lessons and drooling over boats). In about 6 - 8 years we will have a boat and will be spending a lot of time in the Bahamas. This book really gives a lot of excellent information on just about everything you need, and more stuff on the things you want to know.
I highly recommend this book and this author to any one, sailor or not!
On and Off the Beaten Path: The Cent/South Bahamas Guide.......2006-02-27
The initial review looks great! When I get to the Bahamas the real review will begin.
Lacking.......2003-02-21
I am getting ready to take off for the Bahamas next month so I decided to take a trip to the ship's store and have a look at the cruising guides. I am heading to the Southern Bahamas so you would think that this guide would be perfect. It is NOT. I took a quick look through the contents and index and discovered he did not cover the Exumas. How could this be? Ah... Mr. Pavlidis wants you to buy YET ANOTHER of his books, one specifically covering the Exumas. Appauling. How can you say you are covering the central and southern Bahamas WITHOUT even one chapter on the Exumas?
I think I will stick with my trusty Yachtsman's guide to the Bahamas. It actually covers the Bahamas. It does not leave out A WHOLE ISLAND CHAIN in order to suck up another 30 bucks.
The book's name should be The Central and Southern Bahamas Guide EXCLUDING a Great Deal of the Southern and Central Bahamas.
Good Grief!
One of the best.......2002-08-27
Pavlidis' guide will get you to places you didnt think you could visit. It also assumes you are a competent tropical water sailor and wont do stupid things like run into rocks, etc. Where other guides state "local knowledge required" for an area Pavlidis gives you the best current info and then warns you to be aware of possible changes and hazards. If you want to find places where there is still a lobster under every rock and no other boats in sight, this is the guide to use.

Book Description
Learn How to Achieve Optimal Industrial Experimentation Through four editions, Douglas Montgomery has provided statisticians, engineers, scientists, and managers with the most effective approach for learning how to design, conduct, and analyze experiments that optimize performance in products and processes. Now, in this fully revised and enhanced Fifth Edition, Montgomery has improved his best-selling text by focusing even more sharply on factorial and fractional factorial design and presenting new analysis techniques (including the generalized linear model). There is also expanded coverage of experiments with random factors, response surface methods, experiments with mixtures, and methods for process robustness studies. The book also illustrates two of today's most powerful software tools for experimental design: Design-Expert(r) and Minitab(r). Throughout the text, You'll find output from these two programs, along with detailed discussion on how computers are currently used in the analysis and design of experiments. You'll also learn how to use statistically designed experiments to:
* Obtain information for characterization and optimization of systems
* Improve manufacturing processes
* Design and develop new processes and products
* Evaluate material alternatives in product design
* Improve the field performance, reliability, and manufacturing aspects of products
* Learn how to conduct experiments effectively and efficiently
Other important textbook features:
* Student version of Design-Expert(r) software is available.
* Web site (www.wiley.com/college/montgomery) offers supplemental text material for each chapter, a sample syllabus, and sample student projects from the author's Design of Experiments course at Arizona State University.
Customer Reviews:
EXCELLENCE.......2007-09-24
Design and Analysis of Experiments
Dr. Montgomery has done his usual excellent job in presenting difficult material in an understandable manner. In addition to its valuable walk through theory, the text is filled with well-executed and informative examples. The homework exercises are the best in his series of books!
good, but overrated.......2007-04-29
+ well-written
+ good examples
- this is the 6th edition, and it is far from being that perfect !
(the author should extend / clarify some sections)
- the errata on the author's web site are no longer updated
- the price
Grad student's review.......2007-02-05
I am a graduate student at ASU. This book is part of the required course materials, since Montgomery is affiliated with ASU. The quality of this textbook is what you may find in a mediocre $40 statistics book. I have not seen statistics dealt with in a more confusing manner. Explanations are incomplete, graphs meant to illustrate concepts are not labeled, symbols and functions are used without defining them, and there are errors in the examples. My understanding was that D. Montgomery has been in this field for a long time. However, basic principles, like including units with the data, are ignored. I expected by the 6th attempt these problems would have been worked out. The other reviews do not make sense to me, since my classmates feel a similar frustration with the book.
Zero Practical Value.......2007-01-31
This book is long on formula derivation, and short on DOE theory. It does not introduce readers to DOE software packages like it claims either.
Also, very poor on real life examples. They exist....but not enough details in order to understand them. I am looking to teach a corporate class on this....too bad the book doesn't come with the professor.
Outstanding, updated and excellent.......2006-09-08
I have used this book in my class on Experimental Design since 1997. Among all the texts I have tried to use to make the teaching of this subject more precise and understandable, this book from Dr. Montgomery have proven to be the more appropriated. The book has new exercises, more teacher resources, and is now more software oriented, something that I found very useful for my students in Dominican Republic.

Book Description
First published in 1936, Colyer’s Variations and Diseases of the Teeth of Animals drew extensively on the material housed in the Odontological Museum of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and quickly became an indispensable reference for students and research workers in zoology, archaeology and veterinary science, as well as human dentistry. In this second edition, Colyer’s successors at the Odontological Museum have fully revised the text in the light of new knowledge, while preserving the best of Colyer’s own material. The text has been rearranged taxonomically and a new introduction reviewing conceptual advances in the field since Colyer’s time has been added. The numerous illustrations, classics of their kind, have been reproduced to a high standard from Colyer’s originals and many new figures have been incorporated. This revision will introduce Colyer’s material to a new audience, for whom it represents a comprehensive and fully-referenced survey of abnormalities and diseases of the teeth and jaws of animals.

Hydrangeas for American Gardens

Book Description
Agapanthus have been cultivated and hybridized extensively since they were first brought to the attention of botanists and gardeners in the 17th century. Native to South Africa, the genus includes 6 species and 14 subspecies, both deciduous and evergreen, and more than 600 interesting and dramatic cultivars. Flowers range in color from pure white through greyish-blue to very dark blue, and plants vary from delightful miniatures for smaller gardens or containers to more imposing forms suitable for borders and beds.
Agapanthus for Gardeners is an informative and practical guide to growing this popular perennial. It includes descriptions of all species and subspecies, along with a selection of 80 cultivars that have proven themselves in the garden and in containers; information on choosing and buying plants, cultivation requirements, propagation, and pests and diseases; and a discussion of Agapanthus as a cut flower.
Illustrated with over 75 photographs, this is a useful companion to Wim Snoeijer's more scholarly and exhaustive Agapanthus: A Revision of the Genus, also published by Timber Press.

A Tender Story of Faith and Love From Janette Oke
Countless fans of Christian fiction like you were thrilled when Janette Oke released her new series, A PRAIRIE LEGACY. Readers have been rewarded with a touching exploration of the feelings and thoughts of young Virginia Simpson as she grows to be a woman. Now with A Quiet Strength, bestselling author Janette Oke continues Virginia's tale with a heartwarming, romantic novel that mothers and daughters everywhere will love.
Virginia Simpson has learned that grandma Marty was right to insist that when God allows something to be taken from you, he replaces it with something better. The return of Jonathan, their renewed courtship, and the upcoming wedding are all shining examples of that. Still though, the trials and disappointments of Virginia's life weigh heavily on her and the inner strength that has continued to build in her is far from completion.
The first test of her new resolve comes soon after her marriage. Waiting for their house to be completed, the couple has no choice but to live with Jonathan's grandmother. Although Virginia loves the woman, she struggles with having to share her new husband's time. When the house is completed, even greater obstacles arise, challenging both the couple's fledgling love as well as Virginia's inner peace. But like gold refined, Virginia will emerge as a woman of character and godliness.

Great Book.......2006-03-16
The book kept me in suspense and could hardly put the book down. I look forward to more books in this series.
Wonderful.......2005-10-24
I was so excited when I got theis book. It is so well written. I couldnt put it down. Everyone should read it.
Marriage, Grandmother, Horses and Mindy.......2004-02-10
Virginia is so anxious to be married to Jonathan that she does not fully count the cost. When reality hits her, she is angry and disallusioned. Her home is finally built and just as life looks promising, an old friend drops in and with her a little waif daughter who ends up being Virginia and Jonathan's. Raising horses is risky and not without long hours - again leaving Virginia to fret. With a baby on the way and an wounded child to heal, horses take priority and Virginia loses her perspective on what is really important. The last straw is when Grandmother breaks her leg and must come live with them. Virginia is ready to throw in the towel when she allows God to speak to her heart and she finally listens. She is able to sort between fact and fantasy, romance and committment and wakes to the real reason for being a family. She is changed forever. Another Janette Oke thriller. Off to book 4!
WOW!.......2000-02-25
I loved the first two books, but this one is the best yet! Virgina has now grown up. At first I was sad that her teen-years adventures were over, but reading about her as an adult has been thrilling. So many things, including an abused child, her own children, a husband, struggles, and her grandmother, happen to her. Through the whole thing she realizes that her relationship with Christ is not what it should be. I think that this book has a great value to it!
Wonderful!.......2000-02-24
Just like the previous reader, I couldn't put the book down! It was such a wonderful story I only wished that I had read the first two novels! I'm a first time reader to author Jannette Oke and I'm happy that found her! It was wonderfully written and very warming to the heart. I was glad to see Virginia's strength renewed during her toughest times. May God continue to bless Mrs. Oke.
Book Description
nto the Prairie continues Rosanne Bittner's retelling of the growth of America through the descendants of Noah and Jess Wilde, featured in the first book of this series, Into the Wilderness. Grandson Jonah Wilde, his wife Sadie, and their three-year-old son, Paul, head into the prairies of Indiana to build on Jonah's dream of a farming empire. But an encounter with the Shawnee Indians, who believe the land still belongs to them, changes that dream forever. Paul and his mother are led to Tippecanoe, where they are placed at the mercy of a Potawatomi leader, Windigo, and of the famous Shawnee leader, Tecumseh. Will they have the strength-and the luck-to survive when their dreams are destroyed?
Customer Reviews:
fabulous historical romance.......2004-06-30
In 1810 Ohio, middle brother Jonah Wilde decides that the family farm is not big enough for his growing family, his older brother, spouse and children, and their teenage younger sibling. He, his wife Sadie, and their three-year-old son Paul move to the Fort Wayne, Indiana Territory area planning to start their own spread in spite of increased unrest from the Indian tribes united under brilliant tactician Tecumseh.
During a skirmish, the Indians abduct Sadie and Paul. One warrior, Wingo believes Sadie is the woman he has envisioned as his squaw for years. Thinking that Jonah is dead, Sadie will do anything to keep Paul alive so she agrees to marry the Indian. To her surprise, she finds her husband is kind to her and her son and begins to fall in love with him. However, Jonah lives and searches for his wife and son. If he finds them, Sadie has a difficult dilemma to deal with as she loves both men and has Wingo's baby growing inside her.
The third America West tale, INTO THE PRAIRIE is a fabulous historical romance that does more than just bring to life an era although the story line clearly does do that. Sadie's dilemma is the key extra element that makes for a fantastic tale. The support cast consists of warm fully developed protagonists regardless of natural origin, but Rosanne Bittner's deep novel belongs to the stupendous Sadie. Readers will want to obtain the previous "Into" novels starring relatives of Jonah (see INTO THE VALLEY: THE SETTLERS and INTO THE WILDERNESS: THE LONG HUNTERS)

Book Description
Established in 1884 and operative for nearly a century, the Chilocco Indian School in Oklahoma was one of a series of off-reservation boarding schools intended to assimilate American Indian children into mainstream American life. Critics have characterized the schools as destroyers of Indian communities and cultures, but the reality that K. Tsianina Lomawaima discloses was much more complex.
Lomawaima allows the Chilocco students to speak for themselves. In recollections juxtaposed against the official records of racist ideology and repressive practice, students from the 1920s and 1930s recall their loneliness and demoralization but also remember with pride the love and mutual support binding them together—the forging of new pan-Indian identities and reinforcement of old tribal ones.
Customer Reviews:
they Called it Prairie Light.......2004-05-15
It would have been better if it had not been a duplicate of many other Native Stories I have read- just with a different tribe. I don't wish to make light of their situation in that boarding school, I just wish it would have had more about the families and their traditions-things that are unique to that tribe
Indian Boarding School.......2004-02-03
K. Tsianina Lomawaima's "They Called It Prairie Light: The Story of Chilocco Indian School" provides a bleak picture of the Indian boarding school and how it, in a way, was unsuccessful in eliminating tribal identity. Lomawaima, however, agrees that the boarding schools could be very influential, as they had an impact on the use of language, religious conversion, attitudes towards education, and more. Indina children, at such a tender age could easily be culturally transformed. She also discusses the various tactics the students used to adapt to and resist the school's agenda of changing them completely.
Lomawaima, uses oral history heavily. It helps too, that her mother was a former student at Chilocco Indian School. I think this is a great book for Native American History students specifically, as she does provide valuable insights into the lives of these students and the use of "education" in the name of "civilizing" them.
About time we heard from the students themselves........1999-10-21
The book is very insightful for people trying to trace the history of the boarding-school experience among Native Americans. For too long, we have heard the story of this blight on education in this country from the perpetrators side only. This book goes far and away in advancing for the first time the views and stories of the people who lived it. Began as a way to "civilize" Native people forcefully, Chilocco soon becomes, after needed reform, a way of life for many Indian families till 1980. Racism was the antagonist after the 20's which forced Native people to send their children to these schools, not the government. Sometimes, these schools were their own choices for higher education for their children after grade schools. Clearly evident in this book is the nature of "vocational education" which was espoused by the boarding schools: that of subservience. They were not training these people to be doctors, lawyers, educators, and civil servants, they trained them to do for others and not to aspire to anything but. A great book to start your education into educational history of Native peoples. I highly recommend this!

Elizabeth Mrazik Cleaver Picture Book Award winner
Governor General's Literary Award for Children's Text nominee
The time is 1900, in the midst of the great waves of European immigration to North America. Standing in the dust and wind of the prairie, a young boy prepares to say good-bye to Josepha, his older classmate, who is leaving the alienating world of the classroom where no one speaks his language.
But what a wonderful friend he has been! And without a common language between them, how will his younger friend ever say good-bye? What gift can he give Josepha to show how special their friendship has been?
Josepha depicts a facet of pioneer life seldom considered - the immigrant child's struggle to begin again in a strange land.
Customer Reviews:
One of the top ten children's books in my book!.......2005-11-15
This book is perhaps not well-known, but it should be. The first time I read it to my children I couldn't read the end of it because I was crying so hard! Heartwarming story with incredible lessons of humanity. It is the one book my kids remember the most vividly of all the books we read to them, and the book I suspect they will first buy for their own children one day.
Beautiful pictures, tender story.......2002-05-17
I bought this as a bargin book simply because it is a story set on the prairie, and I wanted to introduce my 3-year-old son to that part of the world. My son fell in love with Josepha on the first reading. The story and its pictures--vivid paintings, with real prairie skies--prompt endless questions. My son relates to the characters in this book, and I can see it helping him develop his sense of empathy. He often talks of Josepha long after we put the book down. That in itself is a good recommendation.
