Good Guide, Just needs a Bit of an Update.......2007-09-16

I used to live in St. Thomas, and traveled to the other Virgin Islands, as well as Montserrat, St. Kitts, Antigua and St Maarten/ St. Martin. This was far and away the best guide. Despite its scope, the Rough Guide was better at identifying the major attractions and conveying practical information than many of the specific island guides that I came across. It's very well edited.

The only caveat that I'd add is that it does need a bit of an update, especially with respect to departure taxes, taxi fares and Montserrat tours. Still, I couldn't recommend a better guide.

INTRODUCTION

Just off the coast of the South American mainland they were once part of, Trinidad and Tobago (usually shortened to T&T) form the southernmost islands of the Lesser Antilles chain and the most influential republic in the Eastern Caribbean. They are the most exciting, underexplored and uncontrived of Caribbean islands, rich in indigenous culture. A cultural pacemaker best known as the home and heart of West Indian Carnival, the nation can also boast having the most diverse and absorbing society in the region.

Trinidad and Tobago remain relatively inexpensive, and are well geared to independent travellers without being fully fledged tourist resorts. Natural reserves of gas and oil combined with a strong manufacturing industry have ensured economic independence, and you'll find the islands refreshingly unfettered by the pretensions of the tourist trade. Visitors are not corralled in all-inclusives or holed up on private beaches, and - though you could easily spend two weeks exploring seashores, which range from palm-lined white sand fringed by limpid waters to secluded, wave-whipped outcrops - you'll find there's far more to T&T than suntans and snorkelling.

These are among the richest destinations in the Caribbean for eco-tourism, combining the characteristic flora and fauna of the region with the wilder aspect of the South American mainland. You'd be hard pressed to come up with anywhere that offers such a variety of habitats in such a compact area (Trinidad covers no more than 4830 square kilometres, Tobago just 300). In Trinidad, you can hike through undisturbed tropical rainforest where towering canopies of mahogany and teak bedecked with lianas and epiphytic plants shelter red howler monkeys and ocelots. The wetlands and mangrove swamps harbour all manner of exotic wildlife, while leatherback turtles lay eggs on remote beaches. Huge blue emperor butterflies flit around the cool waters of innumerable inland rivers and waterfalls, and the birdwatching - with more than 430 brilliantly hued species - is among the world's best. Tobago is best known for its glorious beaches and stunning coral reefs, declared third best in the Caribbean by Jacques Cousteau and favoured by graceful seven-metre manta rays and shoals of technicolour tropical fish.

Equally absorbing are T&T's vital, crowded and dynamic towns and cities, unique showcases for the architectural, religious and cultural traditions of their cosmopolitan populations. Fretworked townhouses, Georgian-style mansions and barrack-house complexes built for plantation workers sit side by side with temples, mosques, Catholic cathedrals and Anglican churches. The varied ethnic groups brought to labour in the islands after the slaves there were freed in 1834 have given rise to a remarkably varied populace, hailing from India, China, Portugal and Syria as well as Africa, England, France and Spain. Though racial tensions are inevitably present, Trinbagonians (as they're collectively known) generally coexist with good humour, and are proud of the multiculturalism that has so enriched the life of the nation. Nowhere is this more visible than in a lively music scene that rivals even that of Jamaica. The steel drum was invented in the Port of Spain suburb of Laventille, while calypso, first developed in African communities, evolved into contemporary soca. That in turn has spawned the Indian-influenced chutney soca and the danceable beats and politically conscious lyrics of rapso.

Trinbagonians have a less harrowing past to contend with than many of their Caribbean neighbours. Neglected by the Spanish for most of their three centuries of rule, Trinidad experienced full-scale slavery for only fifty years, while the Dutch, French and English were too busy fighting over Tobago to dedicate it to the demands of King Sugar. Consequently, the national psyche is characterized by a strong sense of identity and a laid-back enjoyment of the good things in life, the latter best displayed in the local propensity for liming - taking time out to meet friends, talk and sink a Carib beer or some rum. Thirteen public holidays and numerous local festivals are mere limbering up for the republic's most famous party, the annual pre-Lenten Carnival, where the no-holds-barred debauchery of opening night Jouvert celebrations is followed by two days of pure joy as 5000-strong bands of intricately costumed revellers take to the streets in a celebration of life.

If you're going to Trinidad and Tobago, you simply MUST buy this book. It was a huge help while I was there, and I wouldn't have had nearly as much fun without it. Complete where where to stay, what to do, how to get there, where to catch the Maxis, taxis, etc...it is an incredibly helpful book. If you're going to T&T and not touring the country, you probably won't need a book. But if you want to see what T&T really has to offer, you've gotta pick this book up. I spent 9 days in the country with this book always at my side.

I am a Trinidadian living in the US for only four years now but this book was still very educational. The truth is, many parts of Trinidad are hard to navigate and few Trinidadians know the whole island.
In addition tourism is not as strongly encouraged as in other islands so it is hard to even get a good map of certain places.
The book presents a realistic, in depth perspective of all the hots spots and also the very obscure ones too.
A good book for the tourist, the local or the curious.

I am a Trinidadian who has been living abroad for the past eight years. I had not been back to Trinidad and Tobago since 1999 and was very much out of touch with what was current. I needed to organize a wedding in Trinidad from abroad and accomodation and activities for our foreign guests.
This was one of two guidebooks dedicated only to Trinidad and Tobago in my local bookstore. For this reason alone it already earns its stars because Trinidad and Tobago is not a popular tourist destination so there aren't many guides dedicated to the this country alone.
I thought the sections on accomodations in each locale was well organized and that the information about the places were mostly accurate. There were exhaustive descriptions of each area of Trinidad and Tobago which were very accurate along with long lists of what to see and do in each area and who to call for tours etc. It also contained long lists of bars, restaurants and clubs for all budgets and tastes.
I was very pleased with this book as it helped me immensly in planning of my wedding and accomodations and tours for my guests. Of course one should supplement the information in the book with searches on the internet for things like accomodations and tour guides as I was able to find some cheaper deals which were not included in the book. However, this is also the case with many other travel books on other places which I have visited where I have always found cheaper accomodations and tours etc. from the internet.

Could have been better organized.......2001-05-17

While the authors' passion for their subject is obvious, the information is very poorly organized and scattered all over the place. You have to sit down and read an entire chapter to find some important piece of information nestled away in it. There should be a clear table for T&T's complex transportation system, rather than confusing prose descriptions scattered all over the place. There should be an index of maps. The accommodation section is pretty good. There should be a better chapter on Carnival, with information on how to find the mas camps, buy tickets etc. The biggest gripe I have with it though is that transportation info, which is so crucial, is horribly presented.

Although I found this book to be a generic formula, I enjoyed it. The photos of the hounds are fresh and appear to be current.

This is just a nice little starter book for people who are interested in beagles and who enjoy photographs of the winsome little hound. As the owner of a beagle, I enjoyed this book and smiled at the antics of the hounds.

The typical formula dog book.......1999-06-28

This book was one of the first Beagle books I have read and I was not impressed. The book is formula based... right down to the generic dog care chapters. If you want to be an informed dog buyer, this book doesn't cut it. I feel that the average buyer needs to also be informed about more complex issues such as responsible breeders and genetic diseases (more than a small paragraph). It is important to know what a Beagle ought to look like, some background (this is a hunting/pack animal!), and how genetics actually works. I recommend the New Beagle if you want to know more about your dog than what you could easily find out by reading the encyclopedia. The New Beagle not only spouts off the standard but helps illustrate it. I feel the average reader is more intelligent than formula books give them credit for and the The Beagle : An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet just doesn't cut it.

Best Book for Normal Beagle Owners.......1998-07-02

This is a great book for Beagle owners who want to learn some practical information and advice about their pet. There aren't tons of archaic black and white photos of former dog show champions past posing on the winner's stand. The color photos are up-to-date, delightful, and show Beagles doing what they do best - having fun and being cute! There are no long, tedious chapters on "Grooming for the Show Ring," "Training Hounds for the Field," or "Breeding Your Beagle" - Just lots of tips, suggestions and sound advice for keeping your pet fit, healthy and happy. Of the four major Beagle books I've read ("The Beagle" by Marcia Foy & Anna Nicholas; "The New Beagle" by Judith M. Musladin; and "Beagles" by Beverly Pisano) this book is clearly the best for owners in the "real, everyday world."

This 143 page softbound volume has over 500 full color pictures of every type of advertising and figural letter opener. There is a brief introduction to the collectible. 1996 prices are shown. Each item is described, and its size specified. Very handy 5 x 8" size to keep with you when antiquing.

Finally there's a book to help you stay in shape for gardening. I found Gardener's Fitness to be just what I was looking for in terms of exercises to save my back, hands and knees--not only to prepare for a season's gardening, but also what to do when your back gives out from lifting bags of fertilizer. To my delight this book was also full of information about health and safety issues related to gardening i.e. what to do about bug bites, sun-burn, nail fungus, grime removal etc. I loved the beauty tips ranging from herbal baths to foot massage. Ms. Pearlman has thought of everything(!)and has written it all down in an informative and clever way. I've already started taking the book into the garden with me!

We got some great ideas on how to get in shape for the planting season. Although we so look foward to the spring, we all know how sore we are the day after the first planting. This fun book has lot's of great hints on getting in shape and staying in shape for gardening. It will be a great gift for all the gardeners in our extended family. Good Overview to Get Started Scrapbooking.......2006-02-15

When I see more than 50 used copies for sale on Amazon, that tells me that people aren't holding onto this book. As a beginning scrapbooker, I'm finding it useful and inspiring.
It shows the variety of supplies available, discusses archival needs, and photo handling.
The projects take one or two pages each with a full-color sample. It tells the materials, tools, and instructions (step-by-step) to duplicate or make a similar scrapbook page. I think she shows a nice variety of techniques using torn edges, ribbons, fabric, etc. I particularly like the way she displayed the vintage photos and the sepia tones in the backgrounds.
Maybe a few scrapbooks from now, I'll find this book ho-hum, but for now "I think I'll keep it!"

I live in Brazil and I am very interested in scrapbooking. To start in this art, I've ordered some books, including this one. It's not as disapointing and childish as another that I also get ("More than Memories", by Julie Stephani), but it's not very good at all. I I am still in the search of a book that teaches people from everywhere out of USA how to make creative scrapbooks. The point is that the books that I've found askes you to work with fabrics and material that you can find only in the USA.

This book is great if you are new to scrapbooking. It will quickly acquaint you with the techniques needed to make beautiful layouts. After you read through it a few times, however, and practice the designs that interest you the most, this book tends to stay tucked away on the shelf. The techniques and layouts used in this book are simple enough that you can remember it without having to refer to the book. If you only scrapbook a few times a year, this book would be a great buy. However, if you scrapbook often then save yourself the money and just go to the library to find these ideas.

This book I found very informative, and it had some really great ideas. I would have liked it to have had more pictures to go along with the instructions, rather than just the final result showing, but all in all, it was worth the money to get it.

Elizabeth Crook's novel, Promised Lands captivated me. Her research so accurate and her characterization so poignant that I feel like I lived the times with these people. And though Fannin's indecision, the subsequent cause of his downfall, stings the Texan,history is never made up of simple infallible characters. My imagination was so piqued, I revisited Goliad after reading the book. Reading Ms. Crook's novel illuminates the past and it is beautifully written. And outstanding work and yes,a must for every student of Texas history.

An absorbing, powerful epic novel.......2007-04-09

I'm not a Texas history buff but this story is fascinating. It captured my interest right at the beginning and picked up steam all the way to the end. It has everything you want in historical fiction: romance, humor, violence, tragedy, and characters you care about. It has funny scenes and extremely amusing dialogue mixed in with the tragedy. It's also beautifully written. There are two or three plot lines in the beginning but I was happy to go from one to another as they all interested me, and as they came together fairly quickly. If you're looking for a great epic, this is a perfect selection. It's not light reading, but enriching and satisfying. Highly recommended.

A novel filled with dread, ghastly events, and remorse.......2006-09-01

Promised Lands, by Austin author Elizabeth Crook, is a grim novel about grim people caught up in one of the grimmest incidents in Texas history, the Goliad Massacre of 1836. And did I mention that the book is grim?

In following two families as their fate puts them on a collision course with history, Promised Lands is based on a time-honored premise for historical fiction. But Crook, who showed her skill in writing about emotionally damaged people in her earlier novel The Raven's Bride, does not settle for easy cliches about high-spirited women and two-fisted men. The characters in Promised Lands are extraordinarly complex and finely drawn. On the Anglo side of the divide, we follow the Kenner family, particularly dad Hugh, a doctor who has given up practice; daughter Katie, a young woman who yearns to feel needed; and son Toby, a bespectacled boy who wants nothing more than to prove himself. On the Tejano side, we follow the brother-sister pair of Adelaido, an arrogant young caballero, and Crucita, an introspective seamstress whose kindness tears her between love and loyalty.

One of the problems in Promised Lands is the number of characters. Besides the five primary characters mentioned above, there are a half-dozen more point-of-view characters, all with complex motivations, back stories, and emotional baggage. I think that because of the large cast, the story never achieves much momentum. I felt I had to press a mental "Reset" at the beginning of every chapter to follow someone new. Even within a chapter, there is some "head jumping" to include the thoughts and motivations of even minor characters. While the writing is skillfully handled, I got frustrated after a while. This novel is stuffed with enough characters and ideas for three novels. I wish Crook had done some cutting and perhaps refocused the novel on just a few characters. For example, it would have been interesting to see what she did with a book that followed just Katie, Crucita, and Toby, allowing us to see the others only through their eyes.

I also became weary of the depression that enshrouded most of the characters. While I didn't expect a rollicking good time with a book on the Goliad Massacre, I think the novel might have been improved with if the characters had been more varied. Several of these folks were significantly traumatized before the novel even began. A couple of smart-alecks would have provided some much-needed relief for the reader and maybe even have added some good interpersonal conflict to the story.

Very readable book about the Texas War of Independence with Mexico. Although a fictional book, it accurately shows the real issues in the Texas War. The "heros" of the Texas Revolution such as Fannin and Bowie were shown to be men who made serious mistakes in the war. Some of the issues surrounding the "war" such as slavery were documented. While I have read several books on Texas History, this book brings out new information and facts through the fictional setting. The horror of Goliad was accurately protrayed in this book. This is truly a book that is hard to put down once it has been started. There are touches of Jean Auel in the author's writing style. It is obviously a well researched book that even documents in detail the early use of "natural" medicines
