5 out of 5 stars Explore Mount Kilimanjaro.......2004-11-16

Explore Mount Kilimanjaro is a guide detailing two trails (The Marangu route and the Machame route) to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. The two routes differ in distance, roughness of terrain, degree of ascending/descending, and the type of accommodations provided at the various stopover points. In this way, individuals can hike to Uhuru Peak at the top of the mountain while taking into consideration personal physical ability levels.

Mount Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, is the highest point on the earth that can be reached by ordinary people and without the use of special equipment. This mountain is 5896 meters (almost four miles) at its highest point. Mount Kilimanjaro was formed between 500,000 and 750,000 years ago and contains three volcanic centers. Two of these centers are now extinct, while the third continues to be listed as dormant.

The Marangu route, though still challenging, is the least strenuous and demanding of the two trails. The guide divides this route up into four sections: from Marangu Gate to Mandara Huts; from Mandara Huts to Horombo Huts; from Horombo Huts to Kibo Hut; and from Kibo Hut to Gillman's Point/Uhura Peak. This route requires daily altitude ascents between 800 and 1195 meters per day. However, an extra day for acclimatization is included on the third day of the hike. Accommodations along this trail include permanent bunk bedded huts with solar powered electricity and toilets with running water.

The Machame route is the more strenuous and demanding of the two trails. The guide divides this route up into five sections: from Machame Gate to Machame Camp; from Machame Camp to Shira Camp; from Shira Camp to Barranco Camp; from Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp; and from Barafu Camp to Stella Point/Uhuru Peak. This route requires continuous daily altitude ascents between 780 and 1295 meters per day. It is of note that some of these sections include descending and ascending portions. Accommodations along this trail include rustic shared tents.

Explore Explore Mount Kilimanjaro outlines not only the various sections of the each of the two trails to the peak (including full color maps) but also details various long walking and high altitude hiking fundamentals. These details include what types of equipment the participant should bring to complete the walk, how long the various sections of the journey will take, and how temperature and seasonality will affect the walk. There are also helpful tips especially for novices about daily mileage, feet, weight, and the right gear.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute MUST for forward planning.......2004-02-27

This is the 4th book in this series that we have used and it is packed with useful information to make a good trip even better. It is written in an easy to read and extremely descriptive manner and is not remotely condescending, as some guide books undoubtedly are. My husband has devoured every page in the pursuit of achieving one of his lifelong ambitions and we are booked to climb Mt Kilimanjaro in August of this year. After studying this book in depth, we have chosen the Machame route and feel that we are very well prepared and the information provided will be invaluable. As keen trekkers, we have tried the rest and now only use the BEST! Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Colorful but not particularly helpful to climbers.......2003-12-23

It's a nice travelogue but it is not much help to someone looking to climb the mountain itself.

Look to Carmichael's "Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro" for that.

4 out of 5 stars A plea from the armchair walker.......2003-12-19

Don't throw this book away or "save your money" as one other reviewer tells us. I can't speak about how effective the book is for people actually trekking up Kili - but I know someone who's done it and carried the book along: reckons it's extremely effective and still leaves plenty of room in the rucksack for other essentials.
But me, I'm an armchair walker - I can hardly walk upstairs without puffing nowadays (though managed a few thousand metres in the Andes in the past). To me the value of this book is that it is eminently readable and entirely realistic - so it brings to life a walk I shall never take and almost makes me feel I've done the exertion, seen the views, and cut that notch on my Alpenstock.
If I were spending a few thousand euros on travelling to and up Kili, the cost of this book would be negligible, but I have no evidence from my studies of the mountain that it is inaccurate or unhelpful or poor value for money. Surely those are the important criteria for judging a book like this?

T'riffic trekking to all readers - even to those constrained nowadays to the armchair variety!

      Eric from Vienna, December 2003

      1 out of 5 stars What a waste!.......2003-05-29

What a waste of paper! Like, why do you need a guidebook anyway, when you've got to take a guide up with you anyway! And if you've really gotta chuck your money way, why this book, which tells you nothing about the mountain or its wildlife or its history or. . .anything really.
Save your money, and keep the weight in your rucksack down.

3 out of 5 stars Not good for quick identification.......2007-05-16

I found this book to be for the birds. Extremely wordy and only a handful of black and white prints of birds. The format does not allow for quick and easy access to identifying bird species at a glance. It does not serve my need if I have to search through lengthy text to get information about a species that I can't identify until I see a color photo.
I'm sure the author spend much time in gathering information for this book such as which birds are found in what areas... however, unless you are an experienced bird watcher or ornithologist, this book may be difficult to follow without prior bird knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars The Birds and where to find them in the Blue Ridge.......2000-11-30

This book is an all-around treasure, for the beginning birder or the experienced ornitholigist, living in or near the Blue Ridge, planning to visit the Appalachian region, or even simply interested in this world-class region. The first fifty pages constitute an introduction to the Appalachian province and birding in general. The rest of the book profiles the birds of over 300 locations, where to go to see them, and how to get there. The book contains over two dozen maps, and even information about birding spots with handicapped access; an annotated checklist of birds; and a guide to contacts and resources for particular areas. It also features the drawings of H. Douglas Pratt. Part travel guide, part natural history, part handbook, this book is above all a joy.

In Russia, where the celebration of the Resurrection is the most important event in the Orthodox calendar, the exchange of real, decorated eggs as gifts at Easter has for centuries been a central ritual of the festival. Exquisitely decorated porcelain Easter eggs were produced by the Imperial Porcelain Factory, St. Petersburg, and were used at the Russian court as Easter gifts, presented by members of the Imperial family to courtiers. Russian Imperial Porcelain Easter Eggs presents the most extensive survey of these delicate and now rare objects ever published. Over two hundred of the world's remaining Russian porcelain Easter eggs have been specially photographed and reproduced life-size. This lavishly illustrated and beautifully produced book will become an essential reference source not only for collectors of porcelain but also for anyone interested in the decorative arts or the exciting history of one of the world's most important and fascinating countries.

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good rose selection guide with some limitations.......2005-08-30

The books by the team of Phillips and Rix are always a treat and this one is no exception. However, it doesn't compare with some of their earlier books (notably, "Quest for the Rose," which is one of the best books of its kind ever published). This one profiles over 850 roses from over 20 classes including the recent David Austin English roses, Romantica roses and Generosa roses. Each rose is given a description and "garden notes" which discusses hardiness and growth characteristics in the garden. Most all are illustrated with nice color photos (typically, many are close-ups - what is so wonderful about "Quest for the Rose" is how the photographs show their complete size so you can get an indea of how they grow in the garden). Most of the roses are photographed in their natural habitat but about half are photographed against white backgrounds. A concluding section, "Roses in the Garden" showcases ten pages of mouth-watering photos of roses growing among other plants, on garden walls, etc.) A glossary and brief tips on rose care are included as well.

I think the book is very nice and I can't think of better qualified experts on the rose. That said, I do think the book has some limitations. First of all, I don't like the way the roses are arranged. Each chapter covers a specific type of rose (i.e. "Hybrid Musk," "Floribunda," "Bourbon," etc.) and about 10 roses are profiled on a two-page facing spread alphabetically. When you turn the page, the roses on the next two pages are presented alphabetically starting over again at "A". The roses seem to be arranged by color but by not presenting the entire chapter alphabetically, it makes it harder to locate a specific rose. Of course, there is an index, but I still don't care for the layout. A few photos also seem to be mislabeled ("Georgetown Tea" for example).

The major limitation of the this book is that it doesn't discuss how the roses grow in various climates. Since the authors are British, I'm sure they selected roses that do fine in England, so gardeners in other climates might need a better selection guide (like the American Rose Society Encyclopedia for example).

4 out of 5 stars A pretty good rose guide or a guide to pretty good roses.......2005-03-08

Hyperbolic titles generally put me off, especially when it is not clear to what the hyperbole aspires. In this case, one can work out from the introduction that the authors meant to put together a wide catalog of roses they "love or have found memorable or striking for one reason or another". The result might be a comprehensive selection of roses they like, but do not expect a comprehensive guide to roses.

The strengths of this book are its simple overview of rose history and parentage, its multitude of color photos, and concise but informative historical and horticultural notes about each rose. For these reasons alone, the book earns a place on the shelves of rose aficionados.

The Phillips and Rix approach, familiar to readers from their vast number of titles, is what it is: many listings, mostly accurate statements, and a layout that emphasizes quantity rather than quality of photos. Such an approach offers lots of data, but it wants interpreting. This is where I hesitate to recommend this book as a starting place for absolute beginners, who would probably do better with the narrower focus of Philip Harkness in "Reliable Roses". The photos, too, remind one of a rose's appearance, but other references are far better at showing a rose's visual attributes of color, form, and habit.

One of the charms of roses is that a single plant may carry several different monikers. Not here: Phillips and Rix have elected to display only the current name accepted by the rose canon, which I think is a pity. There is no cross-reference, as is included in many rose books, and this will stop some from finding information about a rose they know by another name.

Perhaps if I were to labor at length over the text, I might be able to infer why some roses made the cut and others did not. That Abbaye de Cluny was left out of the little section on Romanticas, for example, stuns me. Likewise, Cupcake (deemed by John Clements to be "one of the most beautiful of all pink miniatures") is shunned. The lovely single, Golden Wings, is ignored. Why? "Too many beautiful roses" might be the answer -- but these are beauties: tough and hardly overplanted. Nevertheless, this pretty book will keep its place, for now, on my shelf as a guide to the roses Phillips and Rix like best.

As you'll notice from the listing, this is a heavy tome: four pounds. I am already becoming mildly concerned about the durability of the sewn binding. Even with careful use and storage, the pages seem to be loosening somewhat.

5 out of 5 stars For the Passionate Rose Lover.......2004-11-25

Anyone who is passionate about roses can relate to the newest rose encyclopedia out there, Best Rose Guide-A Comprehensive Selection. Authors Roger Phillips and Martyn Rix bring out their love for roses in this new book.
With descriptions of over 850 roses and fantastic photography to go with them, this book is sure not to disappoint.
Phillips and Rix give explanations of each rose group. From where they originated from, to the geneticists who studied them. They then give detailed descriptions of the dozens of different species in each group. There is also separate sections on information concerning rose gardens, hardiness and zones.
Don't be mistaken, you don't have to learn how to grow roses to enjoy this book. This is just the next big book full of information. Whether you are just a rose lover or a long time rose grower, this book is sure to accommodate you in some way.

              Book Description

Formerly known by its subtitle "Internationale Zeitschriftenschau für Bibelwissenschaft und Grenzgebiete", the International Review of Biblical Studies has served the scholarly community ever since its inception in the early 1950's. Each annual volume includes approximately 2,000 abstracts and summaries of articles and books that deal with the Bible and related literature, including the Dead Sea Scrolls, Pseudepigrapha, Non-canonical gospels, and ancient Near Eastern writings. The abstracts - which may be in English, German, or French - are arranged thematically under headings such as e.g. "Genesis", "Matthew", "Greek language", "text and textual criticism", "exegetical methods and approaches", "biblical theology", "social and religious institutions", "biblical personalities", "history of Israel and early Judaism", and so on. The articles and books that are abstracted and reviewed are collected annually by an international team of collaborators from over 300 of the most important periodicals and book series in the fields covered
