      Book Description

Want to know which team has the funniest mascot? Which ballpark has the best contests for fans? Which stadiums serve loganberry juice, buck-a-bone BBQ, and buttermilk pie? And what you can do before and after the game? (How about whitewater rafting, rollercoastering, listening to live country music, or riding the steepest passenger railway in the world?) The authors cover the Baseball Hall of Fame and travel from the Cape Cod Leagues to California's Rancho Cucamonga. The fresh, lively anecdotes and compelling baseball lore that fill every chapter are sure to amuse -- even if the family favorite doesn't win. The Adams family, parents, and children tell all: How to get foul balls, collect autographs, and save money on tickets; family-friendly diners, cafeterias, and restaurants; where the visiting team stays; where to sit, where to park, what to eat; plus the best giveaways and contests.

3 out of 5 stars Great premise, great execution, but begs a new edition!!.......2006-08-18

First of all, let me preface this review by saying that this is not a three-star review for content. This book is rich with information and heart, and has been thoroughly dog-eared by this reader. I give it three stars because it might not be as helpful to a baseball fan reading the book for the first time in 2006. Much of the information is now terribly out of date (who but the grizzled Marylandians among us would know that the Baltimore Memorial Stadium facade is no longer with us?) just because of the escalating pace of baseball stadium development. I also find it curiously selective in places: why a Dodger Stadium piece but no Angels Stadium? Why no Shea Stadium (aesthetics and the #7 Train ride aside) but an expansive piece on every other stadium in the NYC area?

These are small complaints, and I still recommend highly - but until there is a new edition (and I will be the first in line), trust but verify.

4 out of 5 stars Great guide for those who love baseball & travel!.......2002-11-13

This is a a great book for those who love to travel to baseball games with the family. My only complaint would be that it doesn't cover every MLB stadium. On the plus side, it includes independent and minor league stadiums.

4 out of 5 stars A guidebook to a fantasy roadtrip for baseball nuts..........2002-11-01

I picked up this book because, like many baseball fans, I've thought of one day seeing all the major league ballparks (or at least those worth seeing). Baseball Vacations doesn't disappoint, offering information on baseball parks clustered into chapters by region or theme. It's mainly addressed to families, but a couple like us can get a lot out of it too.
My only beef with their reviews came when they labeled Dodger Dogs mediocre, quite a slight to the Dodger fan. Hmm, maybe they didn't try the grilled ones.
Anyway, they offer seating tips (like which seats have obstructed views), parking, lodging, sightseeing and entertainment options, although the latter two would be better served if you accompany your trip with a local guide.

I really like the pleasure they take in describing the historic parks. You can identify with their love for the game.
I would recommend it to the true baseball fan in search of the past.

      Book Description

Travel in the Mouth of the Wolf is a lyrical and highly visual modern-day fable. When a freak accident involving an infallible gambler, a truck full of chickens, and a gas pump leaves easygoing Iple deaf, he decides to travel to Antarctica. While wandering the tundra trying to reconstruct his hearing and memory, he makes a startling discovery below a sheet of ice. There he finds Isabella, a dinosaur and the last DNA repository of a wealth of human and prehuman knowledge. What follows is a mesmerizing detour into our species' fear and wonder at the nature of prediction in this comic yet harrowing novella in Soft Skull's ShortLit series.

2 out of 5 stars Strange story, but interesting..........2005-05-23

I'm not really sure how to summarize this book. I had to read it for my intro to creative writing class, since my professor went to grad school with the author. It's about a guy named Iple, who lost his hearing and decides to go to Antarctica with a bunch of researchers. It's also about a shortstop in Brazil. And a dinosaur named Isabella who remembers everything that ever happened in the past. I don't think I would have ever picked this up on my own time, but the style was interesting to look at.

      4 out of 5 stars good read.......2005-02-07

Fattaruso is my brother's English professor at DU, so it was through him that I heard of this book.

I think overall this is an interesting and intriguing book. I love the writing style, and the storyline is very creative, though incredibly farfetched. It definitely keeps you reading, though I will say that a few chapters in the middle move a little slowly. The flow is very disjointed, but I think that's a lot of what makes the book so unique. By the time you get to the last chapter, it's absolutely wonderful.

Very good, entertaining read, and quick too, so if you're just looking for something on a rainy day to pass the time, this is a great book for that.

5 out of 5 stars A mentally stimulating whirlwind journey.......2004-12-12

Travel In The Mouth Of The Wolf is a wryly written novel that blends elements of mysticism and even science fiction into a life-affirming journey. When a freak accident renders an easygoing young man deaf, he decides to take control of his life by traveling to Antarctica. On the way he encounters a bevy of unusual individuals. Twin little girl psychics seek to wrest control of the future of humanity's destiny, while the hidden secrets of a frozen dinosaur carcass may yet contain clues to make scientists dream. Part fable, part creation myth, always engaging and lyrical, Travel In The Mouth Of The Wolf is a mentally stimulating whirlwind journey from first page to last.

Horses give us everything they have; their strength, power, grace, beauty and unconditional love. This wonderful collection of stories (including my own) show how those gifts can enhanced lives, both human and equine. It is a book of overcoming the obstacles life throws at us all, with a little help from your friends.

                                  Book Description

Once the subject of snobbery and derision, variegated plants are now among the more sought-after and collected treasures of garden connoisseurs. Whether marbled, dotted, splashed, or veined, variegated foliage never fails to catch the eye and to add excitement whatever the flowering season. Variegated Trees and Shrubs (which includes woody ground covers and vines as well) fills an important gap in the literature and provides valuable information on selections that provide long-lasting specimen and accent plantings for years of garden pleasure. Written under the sponsorship of the Netherlands' prestigious Royal Boskoop Horticultural Society, this book describes in detail nearly 800 variegated trees, shrubs, and vines available internationally from nurseries. Painstaking in the accuracy of its nomenclature — variegated plants are notorious for being misnamed in commerce — this volume also includes a scientific discussion of the reasons for variegation as well as an essay on how to design with variegated plants in any garden. More than 760 garden photographs have been assembled from the author's collection and from contributors around the world.

5 out of 5 stars Not only definitive, but attractive with its large size.......2004-11-10

Ronald Houtman is secretary of the Trials Committee of the Royal Boskoop Horticultural Society in the Netherlands. This encyclopedic work has more than 760 sharp color photos enabling the reader to distinguish the numerous kinds of variegated trees and shrubs, many of which have gained popularity with modern gardeners. More than 800 varieties are catalogued with special attention given to their correct names, which are often confused by greenhouses and other places selling types of them. Short sections on the hundreds of trees and shrubs also describe them to go along with the photographs and note favorable areas of growth and problems arising from planting in an improper place. An introductory chapter by W. M. van Nicrop, another member of Houtman's Dutch horticultural group, discusses "Using Variegated Plants in a Garden." Variegated Trees And Shrubs: The Illustrated Encyclopedia is not only definitive, but attractive with its large size, glossy pages, and hundreds of fine, useful color photographs. For many gardeners, landscape architects, botanists, and the like, this will be the only text they want or need in this area of plants.

4 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but a welcome addition to the literature........2004-09-12

The legion of plant enthusiasts that prizes showy foliage -- especially that which is striped, splattered, spotted or stippled -- has swelled greatly in recent years. Collectors of such mutants are frequently frustrated, however, by the lack of consistency concerning nomenclature and the sparse literature that addresses these special plants. For this reason it is clear this book would be embraced by hobbyists and professionals even if it was rife with errors and omissions. Thankfully, the situation is not so dire. High quality pictures supplement the alphabetical cultivar descriptions. The author should be applauded for the research time invested in determining the origin and true identity of many of the plants he covers. The supplemental essays on topics such as the origin of variegation are also useful. Despite these positive attributes, the book nonetheless suffers from a sharp focus on European (and especially Dutch) cultivars to the exclusion of many American introductions. Even when U.S. plants are discussed, the information is sometimes incomplete. While such bias is perhaps understandable given the author's nationality and position, these gaps detract from the book's quality. The content is so unique, however, that these faults should not prevent potential buyers from adding this tome to their library.

                                    Book Description

In a career of only twenty-five years, Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed well over 300 pieces of furniture, the majority in two relatively short periods, 1897-1905 and 1916-1919. This book gives an unprecedented overview of Mackintosh's body of work and illustrates*with over 400 photographs*all of his major pieces as well as the interiors for which they were produced. The range of works presented here is quite remarkable, featuring not only the elongated chairs for which Mackintosh is most remembered, but also tables, bookcases, beds, bathroom fittings, and even a pulpit and an organ. The pieces here range stylistically from the more routine late-Victorian pieces of his earliest period, through the white-painted OEpook School' furniture of 1901-03, to the geometrical severity of Mackintosh's work for W.J. Bassett-Lowke in 1916-19. Mackintosh Furniture is a comprehensive look at a designer whose influence has only recently begun to fully realize itself, and is a must for both students and aficionados of design.

Now in paperback, this celebration of one of the world's most popular and innovative modern designers is a reasonably priced, comprehensive, and thoroughly illustrated survey of the artist's life and work. Here we are treated to magnificent Mackintosh sketches, paintings, and etchings, as well as photographs of his buildings, interiors, furniture, glasswork, fixtures, ironwork, tile, sculpture, kitchenware, fabrics -- even such novelties as a tea room menu, a grandfather clock, and a rustic garden gate. Author Elizabeth Wilhide explores the artist's early days, his inspiration and education, and his later works of mastery, as well as many of his lesser-known pieces. In addition, she includes a valuable list of Mackintosh sites to visit abroad. With interest in the Arts and Crafts style at an all-time high, and major exhibitions of Mackintosh work touring throughout 1998, this is a solid addition to any design and decor collection.

This book is a treasure! In The Mackintosh Style: Design and Decor by Elizabeth Wilhide, the reader is introduced to the multifaceted talent and visionary, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. His influence encompasses architectural exteriors and interiors, furniture and home furnishings, stained glass and water colors. The book contains beautiful color pictures exampling each design arena. In the text, the author entwines biograghical information about Mackintosh, his family, his work and his time, thus setting the stage of the Arts and Crafts movement in Scotland and Europe. Since I am of Scotish decent and showcase two Mackintosh watercolor reproductions in my livingroom, for me this book is a keeper!

Photographic landscapes showing 'sites of the disappeared'-the secret graves of those murdered in Northern Ireland. In May 1999 an amnesty was declared to help with the identification and location of a number of people who had disappeared during the 'Troubles'. Six locations were identified, the burial places of eight people murdered by the IRA. All were Catholic and had been taken from their families and homeland to be buried in the South. Winner of the European Publishers Award for Photography 2001.

Well, I was there. I was a witness to the shooting. I mean the shooting of the photographs. This partecipation might color my opinion on this book but....I feel to be absolutely honest when I say that it's woth it reading it. READING, not looking at it.

                                                  Book Description

In the tradition of the bestselling Ophelia Speaks, a collection of provocative essays by teenage girls of colorMy Sisters' Voices is a passionate and poignant collection of writings from teenage girls of African American, Hispanic, Asian American, Native American, and biracial backgrounds. With candor and grace, they speak out on topics that are relevant not only to themselves and their peers but to anyone who is raising, teaching, or nurturing young women of color. As adolescents, women, and minorities, these young authors represent a demographic that has had no voice of its own, a group often spoken for but rarely given the opportunity to be heard. Now these young women have a chance to stand up and be counted, to present their own unique perspectives in fresh and astonishing ways. Here you'll find a Native American girl writing about the bumps in her relationship with her best friend, who's white; a Korean American girl who wishes she could help her mother understand that it's okay to socialize with boys as well as girls; and a biracial girl who feels she must be the designated spokesperson for blacks when she's around whites, for whites when she's around blacks, and for biracial people around everyone. These personal and inspiring stories about family, friendship, sex, love, poverty, loss, and oppression make My Sisters' Voices essential reading for young women of all backgrounds.

Ms. Jacob provides a much needed forum for the voices of young women of color to be heard. The book is well-suited for use by both high school and college courses, but is written in a style that would also appeal to any young woman of color as well as those who are involved with them as parents, teachers and friends. The stories are both personal and inspiring. Highly recommended.

As a former professor of psychology and women's studies and current director of a center for girls in NYC, I would like to say this book is a must-read. For all those who have lamented the "white" slant on the information that is available about teen girls' issues, this book fills a void. Iris Jacobs weaves together essays, poems, and stories with an engaging style that is both sophisticated and accessible. I think this book is a wonderful choice for teen book clubs and a must for women's studies courses.

                                                  4 out of 5 stars Iris Jacob's collection rocks!!.......2002-04-05

Great collection for youth girls and younger women of color. It stands as a girl of color version of "Yell-Oh Girls," an equally empowering and loaded collection of writings by teen and young adult Asian Pacific American women. Book Description

The subordination, suppression, and silencing of bilingual students' voices and their communities by their educational system came under scrutiny at the end of the twentieth century. This book provides a forum for students' voices by examining some of the factors that promote the silencing of voice in Latino/a high school students thus submersing them in the culture of silence. Its significance rests on the ability to draw out, explore, and document how Latino/a students perceive their cultural and linguistic reality; the presentation of curricular and methodological approaches and alternatives to promote the emergence and legitimatization of students' voices; and its insight into and revelation of the ways shared teacher/student experiences, languages, and cultures can shape and impact both classroom relations and the emergence of voice.

                                                          Book Description

Gay Hegemony/ Latino Homosexualities is an interdisciplinary project that weaves ethnographic interviewing with the analysis of texts and material culture to study the intersection of gayness with Latinidad. Unlike other academic treatments of the subject matter, it grounds its argument in an ethnoracial context and takes as point of departure that what needs to be studied explained is gayness not Latinidad. The book argues that gayness is a social formation structured by the racial distinction between blackness and whiteness in the United States and that, as such, the formation gayness is not racially or nationally innocent. Thus, Latinidad, thoroughly shaped by mythologies of racial syncretism, provides a perfect contrast in teasing out the racial undergirding of American gayness. Ultimately Gay Hegemony/ Latino Homosexualities claims that the so-called conflict between Latino identity and gayness is not the result of traditional values in Latino cultures ( a played out euphemism for retrograde) but an ethnoracial conflict in as much as the status of gayness does not simply regulate sexual but ethnoracial life as well.

The strength of U.S. Hispanic churches is an untold story documented in Emerging Voices, Urgent Choices: Essays on Latino/a Religious Leadership. In this pioneering volume, experts from various disciplines examine the remarkable contribution of Hispanic churches to U.S. society and the challenges their leaders face in serving the country's growing Latino population.

Chapters analyze success stories in Latino/a ministry, specific issues for Catholic leadership and Protestant denominations, and the political and community-serving activities of diverse congregations.

Together, the essays demonstrate how Hispanic churches of every denomination are generating social capital in neglected communities. The book updates previous research on religion that largely ignores U.S. Latino/as, and adds a new dimension to Latino Studies scholarship by recognizing the important role that religion plays in Hispanic life.

                                                            Book Description

In 1980, with the Sandinistas newly in power, tailor and pig farmer Bernardo Martinez witnesses an extraordinary thing: an otherworldly glow about the statue of the Virgin Mary in the church where he works as sacristán. Soon the Holy Virgin appears. She tells Bernardo to forget his money problems and fear of ridicule and spread her message of peace and faith to his neighbors. Though a work of fiction, Bernardo and the Virgin is based on actual events in Bernardo Martinez's life. The visitation of the Virgin Mary at Cuapa, Nicaragua, remains one of the few such events accepted by the Roman Catholic Church in the last sixty years.

Silvio Sirias' sweeping novel tells many stories: that of a humble man touched by the transcendent; that same man as a devout boy denied the priesthood because of poverty; and those in his orbit, past and present. It is also the stormy epic of Nicaragua through the long Somoza years to the Sandinista revolution. Sirias' beautiful language mixes English with Spanish and details of dusty village life with wondrous images of Catholic mysticism. His portrayal of the rich recent past of Central America resonates with the experiences of both the natives and the thriving communities of Nicaraguans, Salvadorans, and others putting down roots in the United States.

I am from Nicaragua, but I have been living in the States since the age of 15 when my family fled the country during the political problems of the early 1980's. I have to say that "Bernardo and the Virgin" perfectly captures the Nicaragua I remember. The characters are authentic "Nicas" in the way they act, think, and speak. I had often heard other Nicaraguans talk about the Virgin's appearance in Cuapa, and now it is wonderful to have this story told so beautifully. Of all the novels about Nicaragua I have read, this one is the best. "Bernardo and the Virgin" is a must read for anyone interested in Latin American politics and religion.

While reading Bernardo and the Virgin, I was carried through a series of different stories that deal not only with the religious beliefs characteristic of the Latino population, but with the political and social reality of Nicaragua at the time. Dr. Sirias' was able to intertwine both fiction and fact to bring this novel to life! I really enjoyed reading it, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in Latino literature and its diversified culture.

I never knew much about Nicaragua, but after reading Bernardo and the Virgin I now feel that I have been there. I've read many books by Latino writers, and Sirias' is one of the best. Bernardo and the Virgin contains many beautiful stories. The spiritual dimensions of this novel remind me of Bless Me, Ultima, but it's the political aspect, the wringer Bernardo is put through after the Virgin appears to him, that propels the story. The novel also stands as a loving tribute to the people of Nicaragua. I will definitely recommend that my Latino literature professor put this book on her reading list. And to anyone who enjoys the magic of Latin American literature, I absolutely recommend it.

As a former student of Dr. Sirias I was very interested in reading this book. I found it to be very insightful, thoughtful, and descriptive. While the topic of spirituality and appearances of the Virgin Mary may scare off some readers, they should know that it is much more a story of Nicaragua and its struggles than anything else. Anyone interested in Latino literature will find this book very engaging. As a first major fictional work, I found the book to be very enjoyable!

                                                            Book Description

Set mainly in California's Central Valley, Manuel Muñoz's first collection of stories goes beyond the traditional family myths and narratives of Chicano literature and explores, instead, the constant struggle of characters against their physical and personal surroundings. Usually depicted as the lush and green world of rural quiet and tranquility, the Valley becomes the backdrop for the difficulties these characters confront as they try to maintain hope and independence in the face of isolation.

In the title story, a teenage boy learns the consequences of succumbing to the lure of a town outsider; in "Campo," a young farm worker frantically attempts to hide his supervision of a huddle of children from the town police, only to have another young man come to his unexpected rescue; in "The Unimportant Lila Parr," a father must expose his own secrets after his son is found murdered in a highway motel. From conflicts of family and sexuality to the pain of loss and memory, the characters in Zigzagger seek to reconcile themselves with the rural towns of their upbringing--a place that, by nature, is bordered by loneliness.

Manuel Munoz writes with such a powerful voice and a keen attention for details. The short stories in "Zigzagger" are not autobiographical, but obviously not completely detached from Munoz' personal experiences. I went to a reading of "Zigzagger" by Munoz prior to reading the book. His personal notes about the book and its amazing stories shed light on the damaged, vulnerable feeling in his written and spoken voices. The stories touch upon the curiosity, danger, shame and excitement of growing up gay as a Latino boy in Central California. The emotion and strength of Munoz' words defied me to put the book down, but I happily devoured it all. I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

Manuel Munoz's ZIGZAGGER is phenomenal! Each story in this collection has the ability to touch its reader in the most profound ways, teasing out the hidden and repressed emotions one could not have previously imagined the subject of literature. Not only is Munoz's writing stunningly elegant, it is consciously located at the intersection of history, personal experience, and culture. This book has taken Chicano/Latino literature to where it needed to go: the next level.

This book is classified as a Chicano Literature. But it's much more than that. The stories in the book trascend any ethnic label and geography. Any reader can identify with the pain, love, suffering, happiness, loss and gain the characters in the book feel. This is not a book about Chicanos in the Central Valley, California. Heck, I have never been (nor plan to) go there. This is a book about you. Be brave. Pick up the book and read about yourself.

                                                              Book Description

Latino's increasing numbers and their uncertain voting behaviors have enticed Democrats and Republicans to actively court this demographic group, seeking their partisan identification. Through an in-depth interview with campaign strategists, a thematic content analysis of Latino-oriented television advertisements, and a survey of Latino citizens in Texas, Inviting Latino Voters examines these efforts. Interview findings reveal two distinct strategies for courting this stakeholder group in Campaign 2000. Results from the content analysis of Latino-oriented Presidential campaign television spots from 1984-2000 indicate that the parties' invitations to Latinos for partisan identification are positive, Latino-centric , social uncontroversial, and empowering. And, results from the survey of Latino citizens in Texas indicate that these Latinos, especially young Latinos, feel modest identification with political parties. Latino's party identification was found to be complex, however, relating to other identification targets such as candidate and country. Connaughton concludes by arguing that identification is relational. That is, it is dynamic, it involves varying degrees of investment and it is embedded in systems of power. Implications for political parties, Latinos, organizations in general and communication scholars are discussed.
