This book is a reprint of the British book "The Home Art Book of Fancy Stitchery" published around 1910s. Like its sister companion publication "Victorian Needlework Techniques and Designs" (or "the Cult of the Needle" originally)edited by the same author, it is a concised introduction to the type of needlework predominant at that era (early 1900s).

There are brief background introductions to the various type of needlework, sample period work instructions and illustrations; including counted thread work (drawn thread, hardanger, hedebo, corss stitch), net work, beadwork, cutwork, embroidery, smocking, macrame, filet crochet,knitting, etc.

The book has many black and white photos illustrating the crucial instruction steps and finished products. Despite the small size, they are clear and well defined. The written text is in the first person, which is rather rare nowadays for such category of book. This makes reading light and enjoyable, even if one has no intention of attempting the needlework pieces.

I recently visited Sudan and somebody gave me this book.
I only saw Khartoum, Omdurman and the ancient sites of Naqa and Meroe.
However for these locations and for the general backgrounds on Sudan and the conflicts that still rage there the book gave excellent and very up to date backgrounds.
It is practical on the ground, but after returning I decided to get a copy for myself as a reference book.
There are just the minor details which will need a correcion for the moment, like recently some new hotels opened.
And the Greek-Orthodox church mentioned turned out to be a Coptic church, and apart from the Sufi zikr location mentioned in Omdurman, Khartoum's twin city, there are numerous other zikrs, but those perhapt should be kept secret for tourism.

Ted Hake's three book series has become the standard by which all others are judged. This first book of political collectibles is the most comprehensive book of it's kind in existence. Life size photographs and accurate pricing for each item make this book relatively easy to use. The only drawback is that the first edition (now out of print) was in color. Nevertheless, even black and white photos make identification of collectibles a cinch. For the serious and committed collector, you should buy all three books. Together, they make the most complete valuation recording in existence for political collectables. A must have reference work.

It is a magnificent example of Burle Marx' influences in his native country. Having always admired Burle-Marx works, it is a treat. Also he has influenced modern landscape design worldwide, it was interesting to see how it develop[ed in Brazil.
