    Book Description

As our lives become more urbanized, many of us have lost the ability to name these beautiful flowers, whether in cities or countryside, in gardens or conservation areas. This comprehensive field guide will appeal to expert and beginner alike, with over 600 wild-flower specimens from the woodlands, grasslands, and chalk downlands and the mountainous, aquatic, and maritime habitats of Britain and Ireland. Each entry gives Latin and common names; descriptions of flowers, fruit, and leaves; and habitat. Anecdotes on historical background, medicinal or herbal uses, and common folklore breathe life into the text. Chapters also discuss the importance of wild flowers in their ecosystems, conservation and endangered species and offer advice on designing your own wildflower garden.

easy book with easy categories so you can work out what the flower is by its shape. has colour drawings which help, and gives all the names, local as well. some of the wild flowers turn out to be ones we buy and plant ie. not so wild. Very useful when you come across a plant and can't think what it is.

        Book Description

This book is the fruit of Marjorie Blamey's lifelong absorption with wild flowers and their accurate illustration. Covering all species, both native and introduced, widespread or local, north of the Alps and the Mediterranean region, except for grasses, sedges, rushes and horsetails, CASSELL'S WILD FLOWERS OF BRITAIN AND NORTHERN EUROPE is the most complete and detailed colour-illustrated guide yet for any comparable area of the globe. Majorie Blamey's flower paintings appear on the right-hand pages of the book and are minutely accurate and precise with many small details. Illustrated on the book's left-hand pages are details of flower, leaf, stem, fruit or seed, and variations in colour or form. These are keyed by numbers to the text, where asterisks indicate fuller portraits on the facing page. The descriptive text, by Christopher Grey-Wilson, perfectly complements the illustrations, and provides clear details of the size, habitat and distribution of the flowers.

Lonely Planet books are always interesting to browse through. Most of the time they do stick to giving you the facts about a country and I do appreciate it. However, Lonely Planet's editors often like to mix their left wing politics with travel. The result are sections like "Responsible Tourism" that at best are paternalistic to the reader and at worst wrong. In this section it is suggested that the tourist seek out "locally run and owned" establishments and patronize them instead of foreign owned businesses. First of all if you can tell a foreign owned from a local owned perhaps it's because the standards are different. Secondly, why would you choose a lessor value (weighing in price and quality of the product together) when picking a hotel for instance? Where you stay is part of the experience and it may not be worth residing in some dank crummy hotel for the sake of patronizing a local business. The reason why countries like Mozambique never worked out economically in the past (and now are trying to change) is because their leaders applied the same kind of dim ignorant thinking displayed by Lonely Planet writers.

I have traveled to many People's Republics and the idea of a business supplying a valued product to a customer was often lacking. Businesses were simply suppose to provide jobs and no attention to efficiency or quality was made. This is exactly why these economies floundered in the past; they could not make things to market standards, their use of material resources and labor was so poor that they could only pay workers a pittance and could only pawn off their wares to captive populations. A successful economy has businesses that typically concentrate on providing value to the customer first - that is you the traveler. By doing so a business will insure that it employs local people and contributes to the local economy. Demanding that local enterprises match the value of foreign firms will help the country. Local entrepreneurs and workers will adopt the right business standards and work ethics to economically succeed.

5 out of 5 stars Truly a vital tool for visitors to this revitalized nation !.......2000-12-30

Mozambique has only recently re-opened to tourism, after years of war and bloodshed. Fortunately the hard times are now over, and the country is once again a thriving, wonderful African nation. I loved it all - the people, the food, the music... With this Lonely Planet guide, I was really able to get the most out of my stay. It contains plenty of advice on visiting places, hotels, restaurants, etc. And also great advice on how to save money - indeed, Mozambique can be very expensive ! A country and a book I won't forget.

Lonely Planet is ready to ease your way through Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia with this thorough first-edition guide. "The tourist brochures bill Malawi as 'the warm heart of Africa' and, for once, the hype is true; Malawi's scenery is stunning and wonderfully varied, and (although we hate to generalize) Malawians really do seem to be among the friendliest people you could meet anywhere" is how author David Else, who has traveled extensively all over Africa, introduces the book. This country offers the magnificent beauty and interesting wildlife found in Lake Malawi, wildlife parks, national parks, and forest reserves. Its compact size makes Malawi an excellent jumping-off point to venture into the less tourist-ready marvels of Mozambique and Zambia.

In addition to helping you find your way around and the best places to stay, this book will help you tell your red bishops from your sunbirds, your rollers from your hoopoes ... and that's only the bird section. Cultural and historical information ranges from the Stone Age to African kings, from Dr. Livingstone to President Banda. Shaded sidebars provide additional information on topics such as tea growing, on-line services, driving, Islam, economic swings, ecology, food taxes, and the effects of colonialism. A useful index gives an overview of the maps provided (36 of them) along with page numbers for easy reference.

"Lonely Planet: Southern Africa" is more complete (it covers the entire area from Zambia and Malawi to South Africa) and more recent (September 2000).

3 out of 5 stars Zambia is in small type for a reason..........2000-09-03

I bought this book before I went for a four month stay in Zambia. I soon realized that 'Zambia' on the cover was in small type for a reason. The bulk of the book is on Malawi, and the author gives very little detail to the Zambia section. I was quite disappointed, as I was glad simply to FIND something with 'Zambia' written on it! There was useful information in the Zambia section, but the Kwacha amounts were far off the mark, due to high inflation rates. I found myself constantly having to flip back to the Malawi section of the book to see if relevant information could be found there.

This is a good book - I've found most Lonely Planet books to be excellent, though - but if you're looking for a great deal of information on Zambia itself, this is not the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars The best thing so far...........2000-04-05

LP is second to none in practical travel advice. This guide makes no exception. We were the first to actually use the guide book even a little before the publication date. We used it in all three countries. The only thing I might critisize is that Malawians are really not *that* friendly (Zambians are), but opinions differ about this. Prices in $ would be better.

                    4 out of 5 stars A Useful Guide.......1999-03-03

This book, to use a cliche, was my Bible while I was in Malawi. The information is good and generally accurate. Except for Lilongwe, I found the summaries on the cities to be a little too short. Also, since the kwatcha (Malawian currency) has recently been floated, the prices are all quite a bit off.

Challenges the popular myth of medieval women in the home, working at their tapestry, through a range of primary sources. The authors look at marriage and childbirth in the Middle Ages and then examine the day-to-day lives of women at all levels of society.

                      4 out of 5 stars Medieval Women.......2000-12-20

Though short (only 44 pages), this book proves to be an excellent resource- and interesting reading- for anyone who wants to find out more about the role of women in the middle ages. This book contains a general overview of the options available to medieval women, and many of the duties that they performed. It talks about topics such as "the lady of the manor", "nuns in the convent", and general topics like this. The book is a great source to use to get a better feel for the time period. While the book is a secondary source, it also contains small snippets from primary sources to back up its points and statements. A bibiliography in the back makes it possible for you to track down any of the primary sources if you want. Easy reading, informative, and interesting, this is a great book!

                                        Book Description

In 1945, Stanford students Freddy Hubbard and Cynthia Cummings decided to organize an outing group-something that would offer them the same mountaineering experiences they'd enjoyed at home as members of the Junior Colorado Mountain Club. They were not entirely successful. The club, in Hubbard's words, "degenerated into a hiking club." It took three returning World War Two veterans, Al Baxter, Larry Taylor, and Fritz Lippmann, to establish a campus climbing club. This was spring of 1946, and Hubbard and Cummings joined right up, beginning the almost forty-year history of one of America's most prominent college mountaineering groups: the Stanford Alpine Club.

The club's identity was forged in the crucible of Yosemite Valley's steep, smooth granite spires and cliffs. Group members made important contributions to the development of Yosemite rockclimbing technique, and helped carry the lessons learned to the world's major ranges, but the club's focus was on something more important-the personal, social, and recreational growth of its members. Coeducational membership was a key factor separating the SAC from longer-established and better-known eastern college clubs, and a tradition of "manless climbing" began with the group's inaugural year. Men and women alike were encouraged to try things that seemed beyond their limits and capabilities, testing both physical and mental strength. And the dangers involved-the club saw its fair share of tragedy, injury, and death-did even more to bring members together and change their lives.

The Stanford Alpine Club is a large format (9.25 x 12.25 inches) photographic history of the club, following the club through its inception, its first trips to Yosemite, its most daring moments in the Himalayas, and its later days of scaling campus buildings; this fascinating volume presents portfolios of photographs by SAC members Tom Frost, Leigh Ortenburger, and Henry Kendall, an insightful text by John Rawlings, reflections and snapshots from former members, lyrics from the SAC songbook, and other tidbits from this history of this amazing association.

                                        Book Description

Marina is a girl with great imagination who loves to dream about the faraway lands that her gradparents left to come to the U.S. Her mind is filled with the stories of Mexico told by her grandfather and the stories of Hawaii told by her grandmother. Through the stories ans the pictures of the Hawaiian side of her family, Marina dreams of the beauty of the islands. She admires the dresses worn by her grandmother and her extended family, and she yearns for her very own, full of brilliant colors and dazzling images. Her muumuu must be one-of-a-kind, unlike any other, just like Marina herself.

Marina's search for the perfect muumuu prompts an outing that she will never forget when her grandmother takes her to the bustling downtown in search of the unique fabric for her special dress. Marina's Muumuu becomes not just a search for a beautiful dress of the islands, but also a joyful celebration of cultural heritage and family tradition that Marina and readers aged 3 to 7 will be able to share again and again.

The plot's a little thin, but the illustrations are gorgeous! There are tiny details that tell you Pablo Torrecilla deeply loved every person and object he painted for this book.
