Book Description
Following its publication in 1973, Wild Flowers of the Pacific Northwest became an instant bestseller and the authoritative guide to the region's wild flowers. The 604-page work met with such great acclaim that its author, Lewis J. Clark, decided smaller field guides should also be published to assist and encourage the identification of wild flowers in the field. What followed was a series of six field guides that together went on to sell over 180,000 copies.
Wild Flowers of Field and Slope is the first new edition in Harbour Publishing's planned reproduction of the best of these essential volumes. The descriptions and photographs not only provide a comprehensive guide, but also reveal one man's infectious enthusiasm for the beauty of our environment and his ardent awareness of the need for its preservation.
For those lucky enough to live among or travel to fields and slopes inhabited by wild flowers, this book is a necessary companion. Travellers to these lush areas can learn about and identify such diverse plants as Fool's Onion, Phantom Orchid and Prairie Smoke, to name just a few. Latin names, highly readable descriptions and glossy colour photographs are included with each species.

Not quite what I expected.......2007-07-13
The description of this nice little book seemed as if it included more flower pictures and info than it actually has. It's fine for the price but not as extensive a resource as I really wanted.

An old but great classic.......2000-03-10
Though this book was first published in 1908, it remains as absolutely one of the all-time great classics in identifying and learning about the trees of the Pacific region of the United States and Canada. The detailed descriptions of the trees, their leaves, their bark, and so on are very clear. The book is unexcelled in giving precise locations of where a particular species of tree can be found, and is also unexcelled in describing the kind of climate, habitat, and soil a particular tree likes. Almost unique among books is an attempt to give an approximate longevity of each tree. True, some of the longevity figures would now be considered inaccurate today, but Sudworth truly did his best to secure the best available information of his times. Sudworth's practical experiences in his tree identification skills truly show in his writings. He allows for variations to be expected, as well as mentioning rules of thumbs and practical ways to help learn to identify the trees. The line drawings of the leaves, fruits or cones, and seeds of the trees are among the very, very best I've ever seen---such exquisite details are to be seen in the drawings! This book has been so useful for me that I'm going to have to find a new---or at least a used copy in good shape---to replace my present but worn copy. For the serious or beginning or advanced dendrologist, this book is an abslolute must in his or her personal library. It's such a great book that it really could use a six-star rating. Sudworth would be bursting with pride to know how useful his book has been for not just me, but for many others as well. It's truly one of the most scholarly and greatest of any tree books ever published, and I highly recommend it.

Download Description
The Rough Guide to Washington DC is the best available guide to the US capital, containing researched coverage of all the city's historic and contemporary sights, full write-ups of museums large and small, and neighborhoods tame, tough and tawdry. Plus, all the practical grittiness that only a Rough Guide can deliver, this is the ultimate guide to the "federal basketcase" that is, to quote the introduction, DC.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2002-07-28
The rough guides dc is great because it contains a lot of sophisticated information and stories. It has a couple lists and tours, I believe, as well as stories. The book includes material on museum collections. This is great because instead of carrying around and wasting so many maps fliers, etc. You have one book with all you need (including maps) in an intelligent format. This book contains hostels, and hotels...Right up my alley.
For travelers who want to stay off the beaten path.......2000-10-20
After (physically) examining a dozen or so different guides to D.C., this is the one we chose. As with all Rough Guides, it's light on photos and fluff and heavy on information. It told us what we needed to know to get to the monuments and other famous sights, but also steered us into some of the local neighborhoods for great, affordable food. This Rough Guide contained more history than most of their city guides -- great for the international visitor or the American who wants to know the stories behind the city. One caveat to families: there's not much "what to do with the kids" information.

Customer Reviews:
Great Maps, oh but thats it........2006-07-10
The maps in this book are of exceptional detail narrowing ranges down to countys which is hard to get in many smaller field guides. However this is about the extent of this books worth. Although the pictures are descent they are by no means fantastic or worth writing home about and there are not very many of each animal, usually just one example, which any herper knows is not enough. My suggestion get Tennants Lone Star Field Guide to Texas Snakes thats a far better read.
Great Guide!.......2006-04-29
This is a great guide - we are currently moving from Northwest Arkansas to Liberty County, Texas, and this guide will be very helpful in helping us to identify snakes we are not used to, and helping our four children to know which snakes are bad snakes. The pictures are beautiful, and I like that under most pictures, there is a label identifying where the snake was found (some poisonous in Liberty and Polk Counties!!!).
The only thing we do not like about the guide is that it isn't divided into regions of Texas - Texas is a huge state and it would be easier to look up a snake quickly if it were divided into regions of Texas rather than families of snakes. The poisonous snakes do have their own section, though, which is good. There is also good information about snakes in the front of the book. The descriptions of each snake are very thorough and we like reading about the habitats of different snakes.
We hope to find more wildlife guides like this one on Texas snakes.
Texas Snakes: A Field Guide (Texas Natural History Guides).......2006-03-10
This is a must have book for everyone that lives in Texas whether you are into snakes or not. I've refered many to this book just to identify snakes in their yards, and is a must have when hiking or camping. I have an older version that looks like it's been thru the washing machine because I've used it so much. When this newest edition came out, I had to have it, and was pleasantly surpised with a few additions such as current Texas laws and regulations concerning reptiles. It's field guide size makes it perfect to throw into your glove box or backpack to keep handy. It has great pictures, discriptions, and ranges of every single snake in the state of Texas. Buy and enjoy!

Customer Reviews:
Great book, check used prices.......2006-09-19
I came to this site to buy this book, but after seeing the prices I called a local non-discount book store (the one with Star Bucks in it) and bought it new for $24.95. What's with the inflated prices for a used paperback? Makes no sense to me.
Detailed and Example Pictures.......2005-08-03
Very thorough research, orderly referenced example pictures, and easy to use.
Don't kill 'em all !!.......2005-07-07
We have snakes. Lots of them. But rather than "kill 'em all and let God sort 'em out", as my husband prefers, I take this book with me during ourdoor activities and literally look up the snake I'm looking at. The photos are extremely helpful, limited only by my own perceptual problems---for example, Texas brown snakes look like rat snakes look like copperheads to me, even in the pictures. But the majority of the snakes in Texas and in the book do NOT deserve to die...life imprisonment, maybe...this is a very comforting book to own.
Excellent field guide great pictures & information!.......2003-11-15
This field guide on snakes is excellent. The pictures of each snake are clear and you can identify them easily when you see them in the wild (or in you're house). The organization of this book splits up into two sections venomous and nonvenomous which allows a very quick way to tell if you should be anywhere near the snake. The infromation on each type is plentiful and everything you need to know is included. There are maps of where to find each type and whether they are endangered or protected in the state of Texas. A system is given in the beginning of the book for how to easily determine a snake and also what to do if you happen to be bit by a venomous type. The only thing I would like to see in the next revision is the striking distance of each snake which isn't given in this book.
Too bad I can't give this one 6 stars........2002-03-01
A great book. A fantastic book. It's slightly larger than what one might expect for a field guide, but the difference is put to good use. Not only are the excellent photographs printed at such high resolution that you expect to see these scaled beauties slithering off the pages, but the accompanying text is so easy to read that you might find it to be a page-turner that ranks with some pretty good novels. This book is crammed with really useful or, at the very least, interesting info -- like the relative potencies of venoms from different snakes. (You might be surprised...) A detailed discussion of the mechanisms associated with different snake venoms and what might be done to counter them is really fascinating. The text for each species is accompanied by a distribution map; that text includes information on whether the snake in question is venomous, its behavior, reproduction, abundance, size, etc. I can't say enough good stuff about this book. If you live in a state adjacent to Texas and Mr. Tennant hasn't written a book about your snake population, it would well be worth getting this one. He also wrote the "Field Guide to Snakes of Florida," so you guys in Florida are lucky, too! This book made me want to head out at night to the local megapuddles that form near my house south of Houston to see what might be after those little frogs that seem to appear out of nowhere in the spring. Now, that might seem to be a little strange, but if you've read this book, you probably know what I mean.
Come to think of it, I'd like to give this one 7 stars...

Book Description
First published in 1950 by John F. Werler and subsequently revised several times, Poisonous Snakes of Texas has long been the standard guide to these reptiles. This new edition is a totally restructured version of the original. Following changes in first-aid and medical approaches to snakebite, Andrew H. Price, a herpetologist working in natural resource management for Texas Parks and Wildlife, has given these life-saving subjects expanded, "state-of-the-art" coverage. Other sections of the book deal with snakebite statistics, snakebite prevention at home and in the field, and the identification of venomous species. The most significant difference from the original version, however, is in the detailed coverage given to the fifteen kinds of poisonous snakes native to Texas. The physical appearance of each species is carefully described, together with its habitat, behavior, reproduction, food habits, and venom characteristics. Each snake description is accompanied by a county-by-county distribution map and a beautiful full-color photograph. Additionally, black-and-white illustrations highlight information throughout the text.

Comments on Poisonous Snakes of Texas.......2000-06-11
A good book and easy to use. Two corrections: The correct spelling for the common name of Sistrurus miliarius is Pigmy Rattlesnake (not Pygmy), and it is the Texas Coral Snake that is found in Texas, not the Harlequin Coral Snake. Pigmy Rattlesnake and Texas Coral Snake are standardized common names that have been in use nationwide since 1978.

Book Description
The earth is marked with the traces of man's ancient past, and Marilyn Bridges's photographs reveal the spiritual forces inherent in our ancestral creations. Her exploration highlights the mysterious Nazca lines painstakingly scored two thousand years ago onto a Peruvian desert landscape; the sacred temples and pyramids of the Maya, deep in the Yucatán jungle; the enigmatic earthworks of ancient North American Indians; and the colossal prehistoric temple of Stonehenge.
Taken from daringly low altitudes, Bridges's aerial photographs pose profound questions about the relationship of human culture and the natural world. Essays by Haven O'More, director of the Institute of Traditional Science, Lucy Lippard, and other leading thinkers lend insight into the quest to uncover lost knowledge of the creation of these mysterious markings.
Customer Reviews:
A different design.......2006-03-20
From the air, the lanscapr is different. What is a great thing have another scale. What we can not see, because is so great or we dont have a point of view, is now possible to see... With few years of work we can see the work of thousands of years, thousands of persons in different lands, in so good black and white prints.
