don't get the online version!.......2006-04-09
If you get the online version of this book, be sure to download it carefully because you only get to download it once. Also, some of the activities (one of the hotel/casinos and many stores in the International Bazar were closed) in Freeport were unavailable when I got there due to Wilma and other recent hurricanes, something the Frommer's guide did not warn me of in the 2005 edition (the 2006 edition was not available when I purchased the online 2005 edition here). Also they did not tell me about "Smilin Pat Tours" (at smilingpat.com), and she is one of the best tour guides in Freeport, we saw Freeport from a "native's" perspective.
Do not buy this book ... Information is dated.......2006-02-02
I can only assume that the people who rated this book positively did so before they travelled to the Bahamas. Here is the short and skinny version of my comments: 50% of the information I tried in the book was incorrect. The restaurants had changed, key tourist spots were closed, and hotels they said were amazing were absolute crap. Some of the places that were no longer open, like the Bird Watching Nature Reserve, had been closed for two years. SOme of the people at the hotel laughed when I showed them parts of the book.
The Bahamas have been hit by major tropical storms and hurricanes and have suffered due to this. Things close every month and if you want the latest and greatest information, call a hotel that you are considering staying at and get them to tell you what you can do if you stay there. This book was a waste of money.
I will post the same rating for the Fodor's book, so do not think this is simply a negative for Frommers. I will say that Frommer's was the worse of the two, but Fodor's only get's 2 stars to Frommer's 1.
Lots of Good info!.......2004-12-16
Having shot for 2 weeks in the Bahamas for my "The Best Caribbean Beaches" DVD, this book was my field guide to producing this event. The list of rental car companies on the outer islands (There's like 1 or 2) and Ferry companies were critical to organizing my adventure. Good maps, and descriptions of Beaches, were of great help. I also recommend Fodor's to add additional info that is missing from this book. If you want to see and hear what the Best Caribbean beaches feel like, check our our DVD after reading these books.
www.bahamas-rental.com.......2004-05-09
The main points I loved about the book is the way the writers get behind the usual spots that everyone sees in the Bahamas; for example, Atlantis, Nassau, Abacos, and really gets down to describing what I feel is best about the Bahamas; that rural, breezy Caribbean feel, and the friendliness of the natives. Their covering of the fishing, diving, and boating possibilities in all the islands is complete, especially about Eleuthera, my favorite Bahamian Out Island.
Book Description
A cruise is a complete vacation, so it's important that you choose the one that's right for you. Frommer's North American Cruises & Ports of Call is the most user-friendly, opinionated, and comprehensive guide you can buy before you set sail. We provide in-depth coverage on cruises departing from U.S. ports to the Caribbean, Alaska, Bermuda, Mexico and Canada.
Unlike rating systems used in other guides, our system is simple. We break down the essential elements of a cruise experience (dining, activities, children's activities, entertainment, service, overall enjoyment, and overall value), and rate them from "poor" to "outstanding." Photos of each ship combine with the text to give a better sense of the very real differences among the various lines.
Most important, this is the only cruise guide that provides the real prices people pay for cruises, not just the rack rates. Other guides tell you that a seven-night cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Brilliance of the Seas costs $2,099. You can pay that if you want to, but only Frommer's tells you that the same cruise is selling for $649. We give both the rack rates and the discount price for every cruise we review. This feature alone makes Frommer's North American Cruises and Ports of Call by far the most valuable trip-planning book among cruise guides.
Our authors, noted cruise experts who've personally checked out every ship sailing in and around North America, offer candid and unbiased opinions on them all. They are completely up to date, with all the latest developments and the newest ships. You'll also get complete coverage of the major port destinations, with advice on how to spend your limited time ashore.

Frommer's Cruises and Ports of Call.......2005-10-31
Cruise section is more up to date than ports of call. Very useful.
A Great Overview - Start Here then Get Details Elsewhere.......2005-06-12
This massive book (691 pages) manages to touch on just about every major cruise ship and port of call that there is in cruising. You get a little taste of everything.
First, you get about 100 pages on the basics of cruising - how to get a good price, what to wear, how a cruise ship works. That will get you started on what a cruise trip is all about.
Next, you get 300 pages on the actual cruise ships. While this seems like a ton of pages, they actually only do 1-2 page reviews of each ship in most cases. In many cases it's a review not just of that ship but of that ship class. For example if Carnival has 4 ships that are similar, you could get one review that covers all 4 ships, with small mentions of things that stand out on a given ship. Since no ship is REALLY identical to other ships, this isn't great.
That being said, I really found the information given here to be FAR more valuable than in similar books. They actually review based on real information from real humans, not just copying from the cruise line's book. They tell you about "ridiculous 108 square feet" cabins. They warn you that on the Promenade deck, you're likely to have joggers running past (and peering in) your windows. They warn you which areas are noisy, they point out which lounges are usually not found by the masses and therefore are perfect places to escape from the noise.
The rest of the book is a quite good write-up of the main port locations. Many people travel in to a port town and consider the port town part of their vacation. This area includes maps of the area, what to see, directions to the docks, and other information.
I was a little put off by the 2005 in the title, implying that you had to buy a new book every year. On one hand you want to get a relatively new set of information - but even with this being "2005" I found errors in pricing. Obviously they can't update every single page in this every year. So it's a trade-off. Again, the book provides good guidelines but should never be taken as absolutely true.
There is obviously no way that one book can cover ALL information on all towns, ships and ports!! Again, this is a sampler. You look through to find out which items appeal to you. Then you should get a full book on that ONE TOPIC. If you're going to Bermuda, don't expect this book to give you the full details. You should get a book on Bermuda.
However, for what this book does, it does it very well. It takes you from the point of not knowing about cruising at all to the point of knowing what your options are and having a top-5 list to persue further. At that point it's time to go to those cruise line websites, to go the forums, and to get some books on specific ports. That will get you the detailed information you need to make your final decision, and to enjoy your cruise!
Lots of Good Information.......2005-02-27
As a person looking to take a cruise for the first time I found most of the info I was looking for in this book. It contains very detailed descriptions, especially of the various cruise lines and the type of activities, food and service that they offer. Of course, the opinions expressed are of the authors only and your taste may vary considerly. But overall they give a fairly objective assessment of the wide range of cruising experiences offered. Recommended.
A great place to start.......2004-12-26
Whether you are a seasoned cruiser and are looking for something new or have never cruised before this book is very handy. I have cruised three times but was not sure where I wanted to visit next and which cruise line I wanted to take to get me there so I borrowed Cruises & Ports of Call 2005 from the library. I spent the greater part of an afternoon studying cruise lines, ships, itineraries, and cabins. It immensely helped me choose which cruise was right for me because it went into a very detailed description of the ins and outs of each port and line out there.
thorough and fun!.......2003-07-04
this was a pretty good guide geared towards cruisers--only buy if you're interested on going on a big name cruise ship. port information was good for st. john, st. thomas, barbados, and aruba. the info on martinique was not good. the author described martinique's main town as cosmopolitan, people dress like paris, fort du france looks like new orleans. i don't know when he went to martinique. martinique was seedy and falling apart.

Frommer's aims to help you choose the island and plan the vacation best suited to your budget and tastes, without inundating you with more data than you can possibly assimilate or use. They describe the various island personalities and amenities, point out the health and safety hazards, and let you know where to go for the best beaches, snorkeling, gambling, shopping, golf, family resorts, sailing, nightlife, and romantic hideaways. For each island, the guide explores a choice selection of where to stay and eat and what to do--but the focus is on finding the best the islands have to offer, and spending the rest of your time enjoying it. --Stephanie Gold

Frommer's Never Fails.......2005-08-14
As per usual, this Frommer's guide book has all the information you need, written in a informative but casual manner, and contains an appropriate amount of opinion so you know what to expect. I like knowing up front that some beaches are better than others and having the facts to back up the claim. I appreciate the sheer volume of information that has been compiled and presented in a very easy to read guide book. Well done!
Nice overview of the islands.......2005-05-03
I love to travel, so I had to review at least one travel book.
Best part of the book is that it gives you a brief look at each island. That way you can get a feel for what you may like
for your vacation choice. I like the way the book is laid out.
(Important note: I have never been to the caribbean, so I may not know what I'm talking about, haha). Have a nice day. (-:
Excellent general island info and reviews.......2003-08-19
This book provides a good overview of most of the Caribbean islands. Each island is its own chapter with island highlights, useful tips, hotel and restaurant recommendations. There are also overall Caribbean recommendations, travel info, and money saving tips at the front of the book. Frommer's rating system is "unique", but the reviews are descriptive and helpful. This is an excellent starter book for the Caribbean - especially if you are not sure which island(s) you want to visit. Combined with web searches and frommers.com, it becomes an excellent resource for planning a Caribbean vacation.
Not up to par!.......2000-11-17
Frommer's has always been tremendously helpful when my husband and I plan our vacations. We have followed their advice in the past through the Caribbean and Italy, and their recommendations were right on point. For years, I have recommended them to friends and family as some of the most reliable, informative travel books out there.
I was excited to see the 2001 Caribbean from Frommer's and ordered it immediately. When I received it, I went straight to the Aruba section since we had just booked our second trip to that island for next May. I couldn't believe what I was reading! If you haven't been to Aruba before, the information contained in the 2001 book won't help you at all. It was obvious that the writer hasn't been to the island in some time - I found many of the reviews to be outdated, lacking accurate descriptions and exclusive of many fine restaurants on the island.
In my eyes, Caribbean 2001 has really put a dent in my high regard for the Frommer's reputation. Will think twice about recommending them again....

Very useful guide.......2005-05-14
This was a great guide for visiting Bermuda. The hotel section was accurate and current enough to plan most of the logistics before I arrived. The guide also had a lot of current suggestions of quaint places to visit that only a long timer would know. Well worth the small investment in improving your trip.
Travel tip - Although the cover of the guide shows sun and beaches, be careful about the timing of when you go. Bermuda is in the Atlantic, not the Carribean, so the water won't be so pleasant in the winter.
MADE our trip wonderful.......2004-07-15
Went to Bermuda to celebrate 10th anniversary and purchased this book to guide us to the best dining and sights. It was right-on with all recommendations. We got a great taste of Bermuda out of a 4-night trip thanks to this book. On our last day there, in the airport we talked to another couple who had just spent 4 nights there as well. They had no idea about Ginger Beer, Dark and Stormy drinks, Fish Chowder, or Wahoo - Frommer's made sure we did not miss the essential elements of Bermuda. Highly recommended. We'll be using it for our next trip there.
Has All the Info You Will Need for Your Trip.......2004-03-22
I have often wasted money by buying several travel guides for my trips abroad. This time, I wanted to buy only one for my four night trip to Bermuda. This Frommers guide turned out to be an excellent choice. It provides all the needed information about getting from the airport to your hotel/resort, getting around the island, places to stay, beaches, golf courses, the sights, restaurants, bars, shopping and everything else you could need to know for your vacation. It also has a very useful detachable map of the whole Island, including detailed maps of St. George and Hamilton. This book should truly be all that you need for your trip to Bermuda.
The best Bermuda travel book out there.......2004-02-16
I have read several books on Bermuda in preparing for our upcoming trip, and this one is by far the most helpful--and most thorough. It has a good combination of background info/history and travel info/tips. The detachable, fold-out map if the islands is particularly nice. I wish I'd bought this travel guide first (I've purchased several)--it would have saved me a good bit of time and money, since now I don't feel like I need to buy another!
This was the ONLY travel guide we needed on our trip!.......2003-08-15
This book is great for anyone going to Bermuda for their honeymoon or for a vacation. I found all the top beaches and my husband found exclusive details on all the top golf courses. With exact prices and candid reviews on hotels and restaurants, we were able to make a budget for the entire trip.

Customer Reviews:
Great for Novice Birddog owners.......2003-12-21
This is an awesome book for novice birddog people. I highly recommend it, and give it to my (Pointer) puppy buyers. My favorite feature is that at the back of the book there are lists of things to remember to expose your puppy to by a certain age so that you'll end up with a stable dog. I pull it out every time I raise a pup as a sort of checklist. I agree with the majority of what the author has to say, and the author tends not to take sides (like on the issue of force retrieving). The book does have some info that is geared towards versatile birddogs rather than just Pointing dogs, which is fine as long as you are able to seperate what your dog needs to know. This book is geared towards the first year of puppyhood, not training... which is great as there are not a whole lot of books out there for this. Helps you to remember they are just pups and to just let them grow up for a while.
This book covers the important fundamental basics........2003-01-13
This book is different from the other hunting dog training books I've read. It covers a puppy's early development as a whole dog. Joan Bailey takes you from your puppy's first day in your home, through adolescence, to early adulthood. It will show you how to help your dog become both a member of your family and an excellent hunting companion. This book explains why a particular training method might work and how to develop a cooperative relationship with your dog.
No bad,...not good, but not bad........2002-04-07
This book is fine for the average person who has no experience with dogs. But for the average gun dog owner, the first half of the book is a waste of time. The last half does have some good ideas, but I would rather spend my money on something more informative such as the writings of Bill Tarrant, especially the Delmar Smith method. It's hard to argue with success and Smith's training methods earned him many national champions. As for this book, I found myself in disagreement with a couple of the training methods, especially gun conditioning. Overall, it's a good book with many great ideas for the beginner.
Overall, an excellant book!.......2001-06-16
There are (too) many "how-to" sporting dog training books available, but I found this one to be different in how it focuses on first year conditioning of the pup rather than training, per se. I didn't agree with everything - not that you would - but I followed about 90% of the author's thoughts and found my dog's second year training to be MUCH EASIER. I think this is important if you have a sensitive breed that won't tolerate heavy handed training, such as mine. It also explained in considerable detail that way in which the puppy learns and this allowed me to sort of 'get inside' my dog's head to better understand how to do the conditioning and training so that he would be successful and the process would go faster and better.
Great book on dog training whether gundog or family pet.......2001-06-15
This book is a far reaching work that not only addresses the training of Gundogs but also any family pet...of importance is the sections on crate training to facilitate housebreaking and teaching the dog that there are restrictions on his activities...I also enjoyed her views on conditioning and letting the dog learn at its own pace with firm and consistent training by owner...and letting the dog learn to be a dog before pulling from its littermates and throwing it into a new environment. I have trained two dogs with her methods and let 4-5 friends borrow it when training their pets...all have been great successes. My copy is dog-eared (no pun) and hilighted throughout...but a great book for those that want to try a softer method with great results.

Book Description
This book uses Western philosophical tradition to make a case for a form of thinking properly associated with ancient China. The book's thesis is that Chinese thinking is concrete rather than formal and abstract, and this is gathered in a variety of ways under the symbol "body thinking". The root of the metaphor is that the human body has a kind of intelligence in its most basic functions. When hungry the body gets food and eats, when tired it sleeps, when amused it laughs. In free people these things happen instinctively but not automatically. The metaphor of body thinking is extended far beyond bodily functions in the ordinary sense to personal and communal life, to social functions and to cultivation of the arts of civilization. As the metaphor is extended, the way to stay concrete in thinking with subtlety becomes a kind of ironic play, a natural adeptness at saying things with silences. Play and indirection are the roads around formalism and abstraction.
