In the mid-1920s, Iowa farm boy and sometime reporter William L. Shirer came to Paris, intending, like so many of his contemporaries, to become a great expatriate novelist. He found that his talent lay in the realm of fact, however, and for the next decade and a half he covered wars, revolutions, famines, and plagues in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East for a succession of newspapers. His reporting skills landed him a post in Berlin in the mid-1930s, where he was able to see firsthand Adolf Hitler's ascent to power, an experience that illuminated the pages of Shirer's classic, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.
"This Is Berlin", a collection of Shirer's radio scripts, crackles with even greater immediacy. It describes, as they were occurring, the great events on which Shirer would reflect in his later book, among them the Nazi annexation of Austria and northwestern Czechoslovakia, the Munich Pact, the German invasion of Poland, and subsequent conquest of much of the rest of Europe. Acting as eyes and ears for his American audience, Shirer provides details that are often absent from standard histories of World War II, among them the viewpoints of the German media and ordinary citizens in the face of crisis. He also delivers revealing tidbits of information in passing, such as his list of the bestselling books in Germany at the start of World War II--at the top of which is Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind, followed by the expected anti-British and anti-Soviet screeds. Shirer's reportage makes for fascinating reading, and it provides an important new primary source for historians, as well. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
By the acclaimed journalist and bestselling author of The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, the dramatic daily radio broadcasts that described the menacing steps Germany took toward World War II--just as America and the world heard them.
Through his broadcasts for Edward R. Murrow on CBS Radio, William Shirer was a masterful chronicler of the events in Europe that led up to World War II. His first major Berlin broadcast was an eyewitness account of the Anschluss--the fall of Austria to Nazi Germany in 1938. Soon after, Shirer covered Neville Chamberlain's betrayal of Czechoslovakia and that country's subsequent capitulation.
For the next eighteen months, Shirer's broadcasts covered German threats against Poland and the subsequent "Blitzkrieg" offensive; the staggering news of the almost unbelievable Soviet-Nazi non-aggression pact; the declaration of war by Great Britain and France; the Nazi invasions of Norway, Denmark, Holland, and Belgium; the Battle of France, the Battle of England, and the threatened German invasion across the Channel.
"This Is Berlin"'s reportage offers rich insights into the very last days before total gloom descended and World War II began. A preface by noted historian John Keegan and an introduction by Shirer's daughter, Inga Shirer Dean, both serve to put Shirer's life and work into context.

relive history.......2007-02-04
This is a collection of the transcripts of Shirer's radio broadcasts from Europe, not just Berlin. This book should be read simultaneously with the author's Berlin Diary. The diary shows his real thoughts and the Berlin broadcasts show what the German government officials wanted to be told to the world. There is quite a contrast between the two.
World War II History Reported Live from Berlin.......2006-08-26
"This is Berlin" is another well-written and insightful book by the author of the monumental "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" and "Berlin Diary".
The introduction by noted historian John Keegan puts William L. Shirer's work for CBS Radio during the war in perspective, while the preface by Shirer's daughter provides further detail and information on the newspaper correspondent and radio journalist who won fame for his unparalleled coverage of Nazi Germany during the Second World War.
Having immersed himself in contemporary German life, William Shirer was America's man on the spot during the rise to power of Adolph Hitler and his Nazi Party and the war that followed. The CBS correspondent knew all of the Third Reich's senior civilian and military leaders and the insights he provided during his radio broadcasts to America as history unfolded in Europe were unparalleled.
But as the war progressed, Shirer became increasingly unhappy with a Nazi government that did everything possible to first censor and later stifle altogether his broadcasts. In the end, unable to provide balanced coverage of events, he asked to return home.
This book is best read in conjunction with "Berlin Diary" in which Shirer provides his comments on the war. For example, in "This is Berlin" we read his broadcasts on the British bombing of the German capitol. But in "Berlin Diary" we find his excellent analysis of how a few Royal Air Force bombers managed to keep the entire population of the German city awake, bringing home the true price of war to the Third Reich and resulting in decreased output in the factories of Hitler's key city.
Shirer concluded that had the British or the Allies launched a sustained and much larger bombing campaign on Berlin earlier in the war, Hitler and his Nazis might have had second thoughts about expanding the war. And perhaps German opposition to the Third Reich might have been much stronger.
This tremendously interesting book is highly recommended for anyone interested in the history of Nazi German, World War II and the struggle of a free press to survive under a totalitarian regime.
William Shirer: Witness to the Twetieth Century.......2006-01-30
There can be little doubt that William Shirer was one of the great journalists of the twentieth century. He was a true witness to an unfolding century and nowhere was this more than case than his observations from Nazi Germany.
Unlike many historians looking back at events from a distance and trying to uncover their meanings, Shirer was a virtual participant. He lived in Germany for a number of years, was fluent in the language and had personally met many of the key players first hand. He had attended the Nuremburg rallies, witnessed the rise of the evil of Nazism and was thus in a position to give a first hand account of the events. This he did through his daily radio reports to CBS in America. It is these reports that form the basis of "This is Berlin."
"This is Berlin" can be described as history in the making. While it is true that Shirer had to comply to close censoring of his broadcasts, he was nonetheless able to convey an element of truth by the use of subtlety and nuance that often went of the head of his Nazi minders. Shirer was no Nazi dupe. Rather, he was a rigorous journalist working at the top of his trade.
Shirer is a person whose works should be read by all those searching for details on the horrors of the rise and ultimate decline of the Nazi juggernaut. He was a first rate journalist and writer and this book is testimony to his abilities.
A very interesting glimpse into Nazi Germany.......2001-05-02
Before I read this book, I didn't really have that much of an understanding of Nazi Germany, at least in terms of events and conditions within Germany leading up to the war. Part of the strength of the book from my perspective is that it not only deals with what the German leadership was saying, but also what the mood on the street was. Shirer does a great job in communicating the sentiments of the German people. The fears of encirclement and the bewilderment at the refusal of Britain to surrender or negotiate peace stand out as two fine examples of Shirer's attentiveness.
The book is also a fascinating exercise in state propaganda and censorship. It's both insightful and extremely frustrating. There is a lot of repitition and one wearies of the daily tallies fresh from the battlefield. As well, Shirer is often forced to broadcast the official Nazi line, leaving one wondering what his real thoughts and sentiments were and what was really happening, both in Germany and abroad. So there to an extent it does lack a little bit of context. Shirer does his best with innuendo and sarcasm, but the strain of the censorship must have been almost unbearable.
I'd recommend people interested in this book also consult "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" also by Shirer, it's a very interesting read and will act as a fabulous companion to this book.
I found "This is Berlin" to be captivating, events unfolded rapidly and there was lots of suspense, which was interesting since of course we already knew the outcome. Reading the book is like unlocking a time capsule, take yourself back to Berlin and ponder William Shirer's commentary.
Very good, despite the censors.......2001-01-30
I was surprised at how well these 1938-40 scripts read, and how much information comes through the heavy Nazi censorship. Of course, it helped if Shirer's U.S. audience was listening between the lines, like when the author reported seeing groups of Jews working on road gangs in newly conquered Poland. These scripts cannot reproduce how Shirer (1904-93) used his flat Midwest inflection to get certain points past the Nazi censors standing near his microphone. Perhaps one can still ask older Americans who remember these broadcasts. Readers may want a copy of the author's "Berlin Diary" and even his "Nightmare Years" for illumination, and Shirer fans can hope that his family publishes more of his writings. The censorship detracts a bit from the author's immense talents, but he still comes through loud and clear.

Count Your Way Through the mind of the writer of Arab World.......2000-07-04
The book was a disappointment to my kids and me. The book focused on very unrealistic pictures of the Arab ways. The book didn't count through the 24 countries but focused on the writer imagination of what the Arab world like. Sands, Camels, desert and market the Arab world is a modern beautiful cities. There were no Arabic words through out the book to let the kids learn basic greetings. My kids had a look at it for a minute and they lost interest straight a way. The Arabic numbers are badly displayed and they are clearly were put manually after the book was laid out. We need to give our kids an education that's why we are spending the money buying these series. I will not buy any of the other book series since I had a look at this one.

Book Description
This title examines the complex ways that sculpture and photography have intersected, historically, aesthetically, and theoretically. Exploring the important role that images of sculpture have played in the history of photography, this volume also considers the impact that photography has had on the creation and interpretation of sculpture. The essays consider a wide range of topics, including the use of photography by Rodin, Brancusi, David Smith, and various Minimalist sculptors; the manipulation of photographs of sculpture for aesthetic and political purposes; the relationship between sculpture, photography, and gender in the late nineteenth century, as well as in the work of Hesse and Mapplethorpe; and the redefinition of the boundaries between sculpture and photography by artists such as Joseph Beuys and Jeff Wall. Using a variety of approaches, this volume also considers photography as a means of representing three-dimensional works of art.

Perfect As Usual.......2007-07-18
I have become such a fan of the DK Eyewitness Travel Guides that I never use anything else anymore. They are full of historical information, maps, area by area tips for sightseeing and guides to hotels, restaurants and shopping. They give you good information about traveling to and from, as well as, in and around your destination cities. My favorite thing about these guides is that they give you photograps of the different sites they recommend. I have had occassion to see a photograph of something I hadn't intended to see, been intrigued, and gone out of my way to see it. I've never been disappointed with these guides and this one for Florence and Tuscany are no exception. A great feature of these guides is that they also give maps of the inside of larger buildings such as cathedrals. This is very important in places that have specifically interesting or important pieces of artwork you'd like to see.
If you are traveling with a tour group it is especially nice that you can see what might be available to see in a smaller place you stop for only a few hours. The guide will lead you right to it and you don't waste your time wandering (unless wandering is what you love). Definitely study these guides before you leave. You're trip will be enriched.
Another thing I love about these guides that I've never seen in other guides is a list, complete with pictures, of the different foods that are native to where you're traveling and what the dish is made from. As I am not a particularly adventurous eater, this is very comforting!Florence and Tuscany (Eyewitness Travel Guides)
If you are an armchair traveler these are also great. With the photos and facts you will feel as if you've traveled to your dream destination.
The best overall guide available.......2007-07-03
There is no such thing as the perfect guidebook, but after 13 years of using them I've been most impressed by the Eyewitness series. I used the Rome book in college when I went there for 6 weeks, the London book when I lived in the UK for two years, and I bought the latest edition of the Rome and Florence/Tuscany books this year for my Italian honeymoon. I also brought along Rick Steves and Blue Guide to field-test them, but I used Eyewitness the most by a long shot. Rick Steves is very good for practical travel tips, but little else. Blue Guides are very good for historical/artistic/architectural detail, but they can be cumbersome and aren't the easiest to use while traveling. I made a point to notice which guides other travelers were using around Italy, and I saw Eyewitness guides far more than any other, carried in an amazing variety of language editions by travelers from all over the world.
Eyewitness guides are colorful, filled with photos, easy to carry, user-friendly, and they have great city maps. They provide a comprehensive overview that lets you decide what you want to see. They're also very durable and hold up extremely well in the rain. Foldout covers on front and back provide very handy bookmarks. They have their downsides too, of course: the restaurant and hotel recommendations are hit and miss (as with most guidebooks), the books are not always updated annually, and the short Italian dictionary in the back is all but useless.
This book will guide you to the places you most want to see in and around Florence. It won't tell you a lot about them when you get there, but for many travelers it's more than enough. I like to have more historical, artistic and architectural detail handy when I travel to a place like Italy, so I also travel with the much more detailed Blue Guides. If you're only going to bring one guidebook, I recommend Eyewitness.
Great Guide for detailed travel.......2007-06-15
I recently used this guide during a six-day stay in Florence, with side trips to Prato and Siena. The maps were wonderful, the descriptions helpful, the hints on using buses, trains, electricity, tipping, etc. were practical. The layout diagrams of the top sites showing the interiors of buildings and floorplans seem to be a unique feature of the Eyewitness Guide series -- they are a wonderful to orient oneself within a building. The guide greatly enhanced my trip. And, after my trip, it's been helpful in getting my images in order and identified.
I like this one a little better than Rick Steve's.......2007-05-25
Having read both and used as a planning guides for an Fall 2007 trip, I think this one is a bit better. There are some other great reviewers here to read, and I can only add having both will not hurt you in your preparations for Florence and the Tuscany area. I do beleive Rick Steve's is better on the restaurant reviews. I also recommend using both books to do internet searches of hotels and restaurants. You'd be surprised how many establishments have websites so you can see if you want to stay or eat at certain places.
A Great Guide.......2007-05-05
My family and I just returned from Tuscany and found this guide to be invaluable. The maps, diagrams and pictures are top notch. Although some of the historical and artistic themes are only covered briefly (e.g. the Medici family, Dante, Mannerist painting, etc) it is sufficient to give you a general sense of the key themes and players. The rest is up to you.
What was also particularly useful was the restuarant guide and off the beaten track locations such as Saturnia. Even though I'm moderately fluent in Italian the mini phrase book at the back came in handy. I couldn't remember how to say duck in Italian (l'anatra), and was surprised to find it in the guide.
If you're even remotely considering buying a Florence and/or Tuscany guide, look no further, this is the guide for you.

Book Description
This new collection of previously published material celebrates Alan T. Nolan's life-long research and study of the Civil War. Included are essays on the Iron Brigade, Gettysburg, and leaders such as Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, John Gibbon, and Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. Central to all of the essays is Nolan's admiration for the valor of the common soldier and his conviction that the War was neither romantic nor glorious, though its results--emancipation and the maintenance of the Union--were surely monumental.

A 'must have' for all Willie buffs........2000-01-25
This is a long-overdue major work on Willie's recording career - meticulously researched and beautifully presented. It gives fascinating insights into the background of many of the recordings - obtained from studio session notes and from the recollections of Willie himself, his management team and fellow artistes. Thanks a million Steve Opdyke (et al).
Book Description
First published in 1949 and now brought up-to-date, We Survived offers a dramatic and historical documentation of personal survival under the terror and persecution of the Third Reich.
For the survivors, the defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945 meant an end to persecution, concentration camps, and genocide. Life began again for those who had been hiding or who had survived confinement by the Nazi regime.
First published in 1949, We Survived is itself an historical artifact, a window back into the period immediately following World War II when the survivors of Nazi Germany were offered a second chance at life. In fourteen autobiographical accounts, author Eric Boehm offers a cross-section of these heroic personalities that risked their lives for the sake of others. This new paperback brings new life to a classic with updated information and a new introduction.
From the original dust-jacket, 1949:
"We Survived carefully avoids cheap sensationalism, self-pity, and sweeping condemnation of the Germans as a people and is content to give a factual account of what took place. There is no glossing over of the Nazi brutality, but on the other hand, full acknowledgement is made of the fact that many Germans were opposed to the Nazi regime and befriended and protected persecuted Jews, often at great sacrifice and at peril of their own lives."
Now reappearing in print over fifty years after its original publication, We Survived remains as relevant and necessary as ever before - an honest testimony to the strength of the human spirit when it triumphs over adversity.
