Review of Glacier Flora.......2006-01-10

This is a good Flora, if you want to do some serious botanizing in Glacier Park and the surrounding area this is a must have. I highly reccomend it to botanists, botany students, those with a very deep interest in botany and especially to native plant gardeners in Montana. I have found a few errors in the three years I have used this book, but it is the best book to have if you are in Glacier. You might supplement with Flora of the Pacific Northwest.

From the author: Since the coup of May 2000 an estimated 24,000 Indo-Fijians have left Fiji, the majority of them moving to Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the US. Those who remain in Fiji have faced increasing marginalisation as the government of Prime Minister Qarase has proposed significant reforms to both the administration of land and Constitutional arrangements of political representation. The situation has been further compounded through Qarase's recently proposed 'Unity Bill', which would grant amnesty to some of those responsible for the 2000 coup. These reforms are all part of an effort to ensure the 'paramountcy' of indigenous Fijians as well as to limit Indo-Fijian participation in Fijian national politics. In this paper, I employ Greenhouse's concept of 'empirical citizenship' to analyse Indo-Fijian responses to their political marginalisation in Fiji. After considering how national identities and sentiments of belonging are expressed in Indo-Fijian discourse through the symbolic inter-connection of the land and the Indo-Fijian body, I argue that even if Indo-Fijians are openly willing to recognize indigenous Fijian supremacy in national politics and the project of nation-making, assertions of their right to live and labour on Fijian land constitute claims to 'citizenship' that are highly contestable in Fiji's current political climate.

Contrary to Redmund's review, this is a tidy collection of one of history's most underrated daughtsmen. For those like me, who do not like Ruben's paintings (note to Redmund: Rubens had a virtual factory of workers who did most of his painting), this book is both surprising and delightful.

A Great Collection This is Not.......2002-09-19

This book is not one of the best among those in the Dover Art Library. A handful (about a half-dozen) of pictures are good with sufficient details and/or a tight organization to be appreciated. Most are so-so. Some are definitely fillers. It does not help that Rubens himself, according to the Publisher's Note, did not think highly of his own drawings and did not even sign a single one of them. All told, this selection is not impressive.

Rubens's paintings, rather than his drawings, should rightly be his legacy.

excellent.......2001-01-16

This is an excellent book on the drawings of Rubens. The works are very diverse and a whole range of different media are used. This is a great book to study for an art student.

This is the most beautiful book I own. If you are interested in drawing, you will love this. It's truly a gem - incredibly comprehensive with outstanding full-color plates of Rubens' drawings. I haven't been able to find his drawings in full color, even in the library, and here they all are. This book is worth every penny.

Rubens.......2006-05-10

I found this book to be dissapointing. The reproductions are small and far from a comprehensive catalogue (Though a comprehensive catalogue would be tough considering Rubens painted over 1700 paintings). The most dissapointing aspect was the size of the prints. The text is generic art-book text, and nothing special. I understand that this book was made to represent an exhibition, but I was expecting more for my money. I'm not saying that it's a bad book, just that it is perhaps overpriced especialy considering it was orignally sixty dollars. I recommend buying "Rubens: A Master in the Making" and "Peter Paul Rubens" by Gilles Neret, a book from the wonderful Taschen publishing company. For both of those books, which together come out to about the same price as this one, you will get more for your money. If you really want a great book on Rubens and you don't mind small reproductions I highly recomend buying "Rubens" by Kristen Belkin from the Phaidon Art & Ideas series (a great series), and it's only thirteen dollars online. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a markedly bad book, it just didn't meet my expectations. I wanted large, detailed, color reproductions, and there was very few in this book. I should give credit where credit is due and admit that there were some portraits that I had not seen before and was pleased to discover, and also that there were numerous reproductions of tapestries that Rubens designed that I had also not seen before... hence the three stars.

Not quite what I was looking for.......2006-03-09

This is a good exhibition catalogue for the Lille showing of Ruben's work, but is not a comprehensive catalogue raisonne of his work. Since a number of his masterpieces could not be shipped to Lille, they are not included in the book - with the exception of some small black and white reproductions. It would have been great to have large colour plates of works such as the Samson and Delilah in the National Gallery in London.

In spite of this limitation the book is definitely still worth having: the reproductions are excellent and the selection of works is representative.

Everybody Can TRAIN Their Own Dog.......2000-01-22

The book is very informative and has excellent training tips. I would recommend this book to beginners and first time dog owners. A great book for all. I truly would like to thank the author and hope this book helps someone as much as has me.

Ok, but would merit further attention.......2003-01-15

The first thing to strike the eye when taking this book to hand is the full color and the beautiful glossy paper (no expense spared at the printer's!). The second thing to be noticed is the lay-out which is only just short of crummy (looks as if this was farmed out to India or the like). It looks pretty silly to have beautiful color pictures printed on expensive glossy paper and then having to look hard to make out the details. Without extra expense or effort the pictures could have been printed 25 to 50% bigger and this would have made the book twice as valuable. The quality of these pictures varies. There are some really great pictures here while others are ... mediocre.

The text was written by a committee and it looks it. This makes for easy comparison and reference, but for an uninspiring read. This fact distinctly decreases its value as a coffee-table book or as an object for delicious browsing. I am hoping the contents of the text are allright (I only browsed through it, but did spot some errors)

The botanical names appear mostly in order (I noticed only a few slips), which is not always so in horticultural books. Still these look a little silly because of the lay-out. Pity. Also the age of the book means that recent name changes have not been incorporated (I assume the reader will compensate for this).

I guess this is an OK book, that will look decent on the bookshelf, but that falls well short of what it could be.

Unique book of rarely seen trees with unique information.......1999-10-25

I am very impressed with this unique book of rarely seen trees that will add interest to any garden. The book starts with a glossary of botanical terms with b/w illustrations of the anatomy of leaves, flowers, fruits & conifers.

Information includes botanical name, common name, zone, native habitat & date introduced. There is a general description of size, spread, & shape as well as descriptions of leaves, flowers, & fruit.

Culture, including soil quality, ideal sunlight, & disease tolerance, as well as transplanting & propagation advice are included also. Three clear photos include the full-size tree & two others show close-ups of leaves, flowers or trunk.

It also gives information on winter appearance & landscaping value. Even gardens where the trees can be seen are listed. I really appreciated this type of information. It is so rarely seen in most reference book.

Don't let the magisterial title of this large volume, part of the Garden Club of America's ongoing series, put you off. The authors have provided a marvelous compendium of alternatives to the hardy perennials of American garden shrubs: rhododendrons, forsythias, and yews. Here are hundreds of lesser-known shrubs (along with the common varieties, of course), each presented with a photograph and a brief, authoritative text. Arranged alphabetically, the book includes a set of appendices categorizing all the cultivars by pest and disease resistance, soil preference, shade tolerance, and several other factors. This is a book that no comprehensive gardening library can be without.

Impressive, lots of useful info not found in other books.......1999-10-25

I am very impressed with this unique book of over 900 shrubs that will add interest to any garden. The book starts with a glossary of botanical terms with b/w illustrations of the anatomy of leaves, flowers, fruits & conifers.

Each shrub has botanical & common name, zone, native habitat, size, spread & shape as well as descriptions of leaves, flowers & fruit, plus soil & sunlight requirements, disease tolerance, transplanting & propagation advice.

This is much more detailed than most reference books, giving information on winter appearance & landscaping value as well. There are 2-3 photos of each species including a full size view & leaf or flower close-ups.

Appendices conveniently list shrubs by attributes including zone, light & soil requirements, & color of bloom. There is even information on sources for each species and gardens where each can be seen.

Look for the companion book Plants That Merit Attention: Trees Vol. 1 which I also enjoyed.
