                Description:
The allelopathic potential of Citrus junos fruit waste after juice extraction was investigated. Aqueous methanol extracts of peel, inside and seeds separated from the fruit waste inhibited the growth of the roots and shoots of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), cress (Lepidium sativum L.), crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis L.), lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), timothy (Pheleum pratense L.), and ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.). The inhibitory activity of the peel extract was greatest and followed by that of the inside and seed extracts in all bioassays. Significant reductions in the root and shoot growth were observed as the extract concentration was increased. The concentrations of abscisic acid-@b-d-glucopyranosyl ester (ABA-GE) in peel, inside and seeds separated from the C. junos fruit waste were determined, since ABA-GE was found to be one of the main growth inhibitors in C. junos fruit. The concentration was greatest in the peel, followed by the inside and seeds; there was a good correspondence between these concentrations and the inhibitory activities of the extracts. This suggests that ABA-GE may also be involved in the growth inhibitory effect of C. junos waste. These results suggested that C. junos waste may possess allelopathic potential, and the waste may be potentially useful for weed management.

                    Description:
Cuttings of Populus kangdingensis and P. cathayana originating from high and low altitudes in south-west China, respectively, were used to determine the effect of drought and enhanced UV-B radiation and their combination on plant growth and physiological traits in a greenhouse during one growing season. In both species, cuttings grown under drought conditions exhibited reduced growth and more abscisic acid (ABA) accumulation than did plants kept under well-watered conditions. Enhanced UV-B radiation significantly reduced plant growth and influenced ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity, proline concentration, the amount of UV-B absorbing compounds and carbon isotope composition (@d^1^3C) in both species, while it hardly affected ABA accumulation. However, partial differences in responses to each stress were observed between the two species. In P. cathayana, the additive effect of both stresses on plant height and leaf area was observed, and drought significantly increased the free proline concentration. In contrast, distinctly higher APX activity, and ABA and @d^1^3C levels were observed in P. kangdingensis when compared to P. cathayana. Moreover, an increase in the amount of UV-B absorbing compounds was detected in P. kangdingensis both after the treatment with UV-B alone as well as after its application to drought-stressed plants. In P. cathayana, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity showed a significant increase under enhanced UV-B, while a pronounced increase in the amount of UV-B absorbing compounds was observed only under the combination of the two stresses. Our results suggest that P. kangdingensis, originating from high altitude and being apparently adapted to drought and high levels of UV-B, exhibits greater tolerance to drought and enhanced UV-B radiation than does P. cathayana originating from lower altitude.

                      Description:
Changes in dry matter accumulation and allocation, gas exchange, abscisic acid content (ABA) and water use efficiency (WUE) of three contrasting Populus davidiana ecotypes were recorded after exposure to five different soil water contents. The ecotypes used were from dry, middle and wet climate regions, respectively. In the controlled environment study, five different soil water contents which were watered to 100%, 80%, 60%, 40% and 20% field capacity were used, respectively. Significant differences in height growth (HT), total biomass (TB), total leaf area (LA), total leaf number (TLN), specific leaf area (SLA), root/shoot ratio (RS), net photosynthesis (A), transpiration (E), stomatal conductance (C), transpiration efficiency (WUE"T) and instantaneous water use efficiency (WUE"i) between the ecotypes were detected under all soil water contents. Ecotypic differences in ABA and carbon isotope composition (@d^1^3C) were also detected under low soil water contents, but these differences were not significant under high soil water content. Compared with the wet climate ecotype, the dry climate ecotype had lower HT, TB, LA, TLN, SLA, A, E and C, and higher RS, WUE"T and WUE"i under all soil water contents. On the other hand, the dry climate ecotype also exhibited higher ABA and @d^1^3C as affected by low soil water contents than the wet climate ecotype. These morphological and physiological responses to water availability showed that the different ecotypes may employ different survival strategies under drought at the initial phase of seedling growth and establishment. The wet climate ecotype possesses a prodigal water use strategy and quick growth, while the dry climate ecotype exhibits a conservative water use strategies and slow growth.

                      Book Description

China's drive into the 21st century has been fueled by the relationship—and competition—between Beijing, considered by some observers to be the capital of capitals in China, and Shanghai, the nation's economic growth engine. The political and cultural history of China since 1850 has, in many ways, been shaped by Beijing's exercise of policy over what was once a small shipping port and fishing centre. In little more than a century, Shanghai has cast off these nets and is rising to be the region's leading economic metropolis, a position it seems determined to hold, this time with Beijing's blessing. As Beijing bounds forward to host the 2008 Olympics, its majesty, well reflected in its cultural gems—the Forbidden City, The Temple of Heaven and the Ming Tombs—remains unfettered by the country's economic development.

This vibrant second edition of Beijing & Shanghai brings readers up-to-date on what's hot and what's cool in China's twin cities. Combining the latest information about restoration, entertainment, transportation and accommodation with historical writing, Beijing & Shanghai is the sophisticated guide to urban China that travelers have always wanted. 230 color photos, 17 maps.

                      4 out of 5 stars A Good Companion.......2007-05-29

I always travel with two guides to a place--one to read and the other to tell me where to eat. With "literary excerpts" and topical features on the naming and renaming of Beijing and the "singsong houses" of old Shanghai, this is a book to read before, during, and after a trip to the two cities. Each of the two sections is written by a resident of the city, and each takes a different approach, as these very dissimilar cities demand. Illustrations and maps abound. Listings of hotels, restaurants and shops are limited and likely to be out of date, as the books by this publisher seem to be updated every two or three years.

                      Book Description

China's drive into the 21st century has been fueled by the relationship—and competition—between Beijing, its ancient political and cultural capital, and Shanghai, its economic growth engine. The history of modern China, since 1850, has in many ways been defined by Beijing's exercise of policy over what only a century and a half ago was a fishing village. In a century, Shanghai cast off its fishing nets and rose to be the region's leading economic metropolis, a position it seems determined to re-take, this time with Beijing's blessing.

Travelers to China will almost inevitably visit both of these dynamic cities. The first edition of Beijing and Shanghai is a vibrant guide to what's hot and what's cool in China's twin cities. Combining the latest developments in restoration, entertainment, transportation and accommodation with historical writing by acclaimed authors describing each city's high and low moments, of Beijing and Shanghai presents a sophisticated guide to urban China the traveler has never had before.

Few China guidebooks are written by authors resident in the cities they are covering. Most "parachute" in for a few weeks to cover one city. This guide covers its subject matter with a local resident with an intimate knowledge not only of historical monuments but of contemporary city life and culture.
                      • China's rapid economic development, fueled by its entrance into the World Trade Organization, and Beijing's hosting of the 2008 Olympics have led to wholesale restructuring of large parts of each city's infrastructure
                      • Covers improved tourist and residential infrastructure, including the pedestrianization of China's two most famous shopping promenades, Beijing's Wangfujing and Shanghai's Nanjing Road
                      • Pinyin phonetic translations of Chinese place names help make it easier to communicate with taxi drivers, hotel staff and others about the location of sights
                      • Detailed bibliography
                      • A select list of Internet websites covering both cities
                      • 95 color photos supplemented with archival material bring the present, and past, to life
                      • 12 maps show exactly where the key sights are located

While providing a lot of inside background on these cities, this book dispels alot of 19th and 20th century myths that have grown up about China centered around the unprecedented modernization of Shanghai and the ongoing modernization of Beijing in view of the Olympics in 2008. With a quick language primer in the back, rich pictures of various sites and an emphasis on people traveling with views to those expatriates who have lived there over the years, without a doubt this book makes for an excellent read as you go behind the scenes of each city to see the old and new.

Comments on restaurants and lodging are good. Shopping comments are great. For anyone interested about China or planing on going to China this is the must read book to see both yin and yang of mainland Chinese culture through the eyes of Heads of Government and Commerce Tales in Two Cities.

For the well seasoned traveler, a current year Lonely Planet guide is a bit better. However, this book combines two cities saving money and time.

                          Book Description

Drawing Acts is about drawing, both as art and act. Taking the study of drawings beyond the traditional agenda of connoisseurship, David Rosand explores the significance of the making of drawings, the meaning in the line of the draftsman, and the recreative dimension of critical response. The book focuses on drawings by artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Piranesi, Tiepolo and Picasso, as well as on the history and theory of the medium itself. It seeks to establish new foundations for the criticism and appreciation of drawing, which is often considered the most revealing record of artistic creativity, offering the most direct expression of the artistic self.

As someone who is writing my dissertation on drawing, I can tell you that this is one of the great books on the subject. Rosand writes beautifully and with great feeling. He makes you feel the hand of the artist (be it Michelangelo, Rembrandt, or Picasso) at work, and that is what drawing is all about.

1 out of 5 stars Loss of time........2002-12-10

I cannot believe the mish mash (see what I mean) written in Drawing Acts. And every 5 pages there is the word which should be used sparingly. I am always defiant when some one uses it out of context i.e. Hegel or Marx. I had hoped Rosand would deal with connaisorship. Instead he rambles on what the artist's hand should or shouldn't be doing and how to analyse it. Loss of time.

In this delightful children's book, readers will be captivated with the legend of Eclipse, a mighty stallion determined to protect his herd from capture. With the help of rival stallion Golden Earth, Eclipse deftly escapes man's grasp, valiantly leading his mares Comet, Moonbeam, and Lucky Stars into the night sky. "Night mares prance brilliantly against a background of a black sky and glowing stars to light our way to a time long-forgotten. Gaze up into their bright lights and they will fill you with a magical power. Listen to the call of the wild herd and remember… We don’t have to be afraid of the dark.”

With this book, Wild Heart Ranch Books brings children another lovely, melancholic story about horses and their quest for freedom.

In this story the author draws a connection between the Pegasus Constellation and the time long ago when "the land was filled with wild horses thundering across vast plains."

It is the story of a noble, wild stallion named Eclipse, and his struggle to protect his herd from hunters. It is also a story of friendship. It is with the help of an enemy stallion named Golden Earth that Eclipse is able to save his herd from a wild chase. Besides Golden Earth, the earth and the moon also help in their own magical way, as these are the "Spirits of Freedom." The author uses myth, fantasy and even a bit of magical realism to add depth to the story.

Unlike I Sea Horses, a title with a similar theme by the same publisher which is aimed at younger children, The No More Night Mares has fewer illustrations and longer, more complex text. The illustrations, though, are photo-like and rich with detail, making the beauty and strength of these animals come alive across the pages.

This is a nice book for parents to read to children who love horses, or for those who wish for their children to understand the meaning of freedom and the harm that man has unwillingly done against these intelligent, magnificent creatures.

4 out of 5 stars (RAW Rating: 4.5) - Not All Nightmares are Bad..........2006-06-14

In NO MORE NIGHT MARES readers are taken on a journey led by a noble stallion by the name of Eclipse. Eclipse is said to have been born at the moment of a lunar eclipse with the moon itself shining in his eyes. In his younger days, he and other members of his herd were captured by men who wanted to make them tame. Eclipse manages to escape, and eventually becomes the strong leader of a herd of his own. Yet the threat of humans was relentless, and eventually he and some of his herd were cornered. That is until the forces of nature unite and make a stand for freedom.

Dawn VanZant has a unique voice that is reminiscent of the fairy tales we all heard as children. She has a gift for integrating fact with fantasy, and man with nature. In NO MORE NIGHT MARES, she has taken the abstract concept of freedom, and brought it to life through the stories of the wild horses. In addition, she uses the horses to teach messages of hope, perseverance, and courage. She also demonstrates the impact of man on nature and how not all change is good. The simple illustrations compliment the story well, while leaving room for the imagination of the reader. The author includes a collection of Internet resources so that readers can learn more about wild horse preservation efforts. NO MORE NIGHT MARES will be most enjoyed by those already familiar with horses, but it will likely ignite a passion in anyone who reads it. And while the book isn't explicitly political, this heartwarming story is sure to spark an interest in this cause with a new generation of readers.

In honor of the once great herds of wild horses, the legend of Comet, Moonbeam and Lucky Stars - the night mares, is born. For all the magic and wonder that the herds instill in our hearts, the essence of the night mares shines down from the midnight sky granting wishes from the stars.

The beautifully illustrated, magical book, "The No More Night Mares," is an inspiration - but more than that, it is a dream weaver, a mind-expanding myth, and a mystical tale of moral guidance and love. What child doesn't dream of horses or wish upon a star?

Eclipse is the fastest and strongest stallion in his territory. He is the leader of his herd and is blessed by the protection of the night. He moves his herd of females and foals through the fog and darkness so that their greatest danger, man, does not detect them. Having been captured as a foal with his mother, Eclipse's escape has made him very wise. One night though, even he is unaware of lurking danger.

A friendly rival, Golden Earth, races to warn Eclipse of an approaching herd of two-legged hunters. Dividing the herd, sending the slowest of his mares and the foals to safety with Golden Earth, Eclipse gathers his fastest mares to draw the humans away. What happens next is the stuff legends are made of. The mares become guiding lights forever more.

Creating a legend is not easy, but Wild Heart Ranch, with author Dawn Van Zandt and illustrator Kim McElroy have done so, inspiringly. Appealing to horse lovers of all ages, and anyone who gazes at the stars in wonder, "The No More Night Mares" is a book to be treasured.

This is an excellent novel that tells history like it really was. This is probably the first book I read that was educational. Dick Gregory is a black comedian who makes reading fun. Seriously, I would have never have finished this book (and learned all about American history) if it didn't have Gregory's humor. Recommended for anyone who wants to learn about history without taking a class or reading something dull.

No More Myths is a super book on pet-care. I used to take my cues from the legends of the Tsimshian Indians of the Nass and Skeena River basins of British Columbia in the way I interacted with my spaniel Barry. Even allowing for a structural analysis of these myths, that's no way to treat a dog. This book, with its no-nonsense approach to pet-care set me straight, and I have no hesitation in recommending it to others.

                                        Book Description

The AHS Great Plant Guide is designed to help you choose plants in two different ways. In the A-Z of Plants, over 1,000 plants have full entries and are illustrated with photographs. This is the section to consult to find details about a plant. It will tell you what type of plant it is, how it grows, what its ornamental features are, where it grows and looks best, and how to care for it. For quick reference, symbols summarize its main requirements. The Planting Guide provides "shopping list" of plants for every purpose, whether practical, such as a group of plants for a damp, shady site, or for themed plantings, such as a selection of plants to attract birds into your garden. Page references are given to plants with entries and portraits elsewhere. Hundreds of plants not pictured are also recommended.

I have a ton of plant books. This one is by far the most comprehensive for plant identification and is very compact. Does not have extensive details on care but has great pictures and identifying features of each specimen.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not Great. Nice picture guide to perennials........2005-09-19

`Great Plants Guide' by the American Horticultural Society is a slightly overweight `pocket sized' guide to buying and raising outdoor garden plants. Regardless of the subject, I am always just a bit suspicious of `pocket guides' to very broad subjects. And, as this book brags about covering 3000 recommended plants, this is pretty broad.

I looked up each flowering plant I have in my garden and was just a bit disturbed to see that three major perennials popular in the northeastern United States are missing from this book! I could find no articles on pansies, petunias, or marigolds, although my other favorites, dahlias, chrysanthemums, and day lillies (hemerocallis). The great families of tulips, daffodills, and hyacinths are also well represented.

What was even more annoying is that in the lists of types of plants by use in the back of the book, petunias are mentioned favorably as a good species for hanging baskets. While one gets the sense that the book is weighted heavily towards perennials, we do find a smallish section devoted to Impatiens.

As this book is published by DK (Dorling Kindersley) which has several other larger format titles in conjunction with the American Horticultural Society, I strongly suggest that this book was digested from a larger book to give the appearance of working as a fielf guide.

What seems odd, however, is the presence in this volume of material specifically meant to be read in March in the comfort of your easy chair, as you look over plant catalogues and plan you award winning flower beds for the coming spring. That is, it is material on techniques which have no role in you strolls down the aisles of your favorite nursery, as you look for a perennial to fill in that hole at the northeastern corner of your house.

Were I to consider buying this book again, I would probably take a pass in favor of a good book on perennials plus a good book on annuals, except that it seems few books deal with the lowly pansy and petunia, let alone the cliched marigold.

This volume may be good if you don't to actually read big, atlas sized hulking books on 7245 different garden species, but I do suggest you check out the field before laying out any loot for this little guide.

I am happy that other reviewers have had good luck with this book, but I repeat my suggestion to shop around before laying out any money for this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great plant guide!!!.......2002-05-09

My mum put this book in my easter basket this year. I wanted a smaller plant guide to take with me when I buy plants. I got so much use out of it, keeping it in my bag usually. It's the perfect book for that purpose, bringing along to nurseries and the like. It is very convenient and gives just the basic facts you need to know about a plant, whether it is suitable for your climate zone, or what size it can grow to. It even included flowering shrubs and trees. Also showed many different cultivars of particular plants. There are some plants that I did not find in this book, but most plants that are not in the book, you won't find at a nursery anyway. You should have a bigger plant encyclopedia if you're really interested in this, but even owning a fullsize one (like I do), you will still get tons of use out of this bringing it along when buying plants or going to plant shows. Unfortunately I lost my book... left it at the nursery, but I am certainly going to buy another one. I highly recommend, just hang on to yours... also I would like to thank my mum for her thoughtfulness, and apologise for my carelessness.

                                        5 out of 5 stars Colorful Guide.......2002-01-07

Whether you are trying to identify a plant or are considering new plants for the next year, this guide has 3000 plants that are recommended by the American Horticultural Society.

The fun and unassuming format is easy to read and you can learn quite a bit by just reading a few pages now and then to see plants you might be interested in for the future. The Planting Guide is pretty amazing. First you have over 50 situation to consider.

If you are looking for spring color, you can turn to pg. 578 or if your soil is more sandy, turn to pg. 627. You then find a list of plants and a page number to read more information on your selection.

Two maps of the United states produced by the Department of Agriculture shows on average the annual minimum temperatures and the average number of days per year above 86 degrees.

Nice Index, colorful pictures and a book you can take outside and read in the sun.

                                        Compact!

                                        5 out of 5 stars Terrific Book!.......2001-03-21

I am so glad I found this -- many of the plant books I have looked at recently were published in the early 1990's -- this edition of the Great Plant Guide has been revised and updated for 2000. The book begins with the fundamentals, how to shop for and choose healthy plants that are appropriate for your garden, how to prepare the soil for them and then how to plant them. Next are descriptions and growing requirements for 3000 plants, each with a color photograph and a special "cultivation" section. I was especially impressed with the last section of the book which lists plants by 57 different categories: flowers for hanging baskets, plants for autumn color, container plants, variegated trees and shrubs, flowers for drying, plants for acidic soil, plants to attract bees and butterflies, plants for coastal gardens, plants with scented foliage, trees for small gardens, etc. I found this section extremely interesting and useful.

There are many houseplants listed here, in particular plants that are grown outdoors in the warmer zones and in containers in the cooler zones, eg, Norfolk Island Pine, but the primary focus of the book is on outdoor plants. A number of plant "families" receive several pages of discussion such as dahlias, scented geraniums and fuchsias, etc, the largest of which covers roses (ie, floribundas, climbing, hybrid tea, rambling and miniature).

I should point out that this is not an expensive coffee table book with large, lavish pictures of beautiful plants. It is, however, chockfull of information -- a very informative book at a very affordable price. Amazon says this is a paperback book which isn't quite accurate; the cover is actually composed of two pieces of thin cardboard, the outside of which is glossy -- my point being that it is sturdier than the average 670 page paperback.

                                          Book Description

This book is the history of an imaginary people -- the Red Jews -- in vernacular sources from medieval and early modern Germany. From the twelfth to the seventeenth century, German-language texts repeated and embroidered on an antisemitic tale concerning an epochal threat to Christianity, the Red Jews. This term, which expresses a medieval conflation of three separate traditions (the biblical destroyers Gog and Magog, the `unclean peoples' enclosed by Alexander, and the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel), is a hostile designation of wickedness. The Red Jews played a major role in late medieval popular exegesis and literature, and appeared in a hitherto-unnoticed series of sixteenth-century pamphlets, in which they functioned as the medieval `spectacles' through which contemporaries viewed such events as Turkish advances in the Near and Middle East. The Red Jews disappear from the sources after 1600, and consequently never found their way into historical scholarship.

This is a beautiful book, filled with the talented Mr. Reeve's paintings of famous race horses posed against the background of famous race tracks. I thoroughly enjoyed his narration of how and why he chose to paint each horse at each track. If you enjoyed Royal Blood, you will enjoy this book also. It is well worth purchasing - for your own collection or as a special gift.

I was back on this page to order a copy of "Dream Race" as a gift for a friend. Happened to notice the inane review that precedes me and had to say something. The person that wrote that review is obviously a frustrated writer who can't get her own book published and if this sample is any indication of her mastery of facts and verbal skills, I can see why. "Dream Race" is a wonderful read, very enjoyable and full of wonderful imagery, both in the illustrations and in the storytelling itself. Go with the majority vote here...it's a great tale and a great gift to any lover of horse racing.

                                              5 out of 5 stars A Captivating Horse Tale.......2005-11-30

Jumping on the "band-wagon" is not what is intended here. This is truly a great read. It has all of the ingredients necessary to make this book a best seller. I found it difficult to put it down, couldn't wait to find out what was next and was saddened when it ended. I have been reading about thoroughbreds and related topics for a couple of years now since the movie "Seabiscuit" was released. My wife got me the movie and the book. That book got me started. So far I have about 30 books in my library and the Dream Race will hold a very special place indeed (I would put it near the top). It is a great first book for anyone interested in learning more about thoroughbreds as well as a summary type book for those who may be missing a few names and/or facts they wish explore elsewhere. I read the reviews "after" I read the book. The 10 folks who rated it 5 stars and one at 4 stars (out of 13) were dead on the money.

1 out of 5 stars Buy any other horse book instead.......2005-10-13

Very disappointing. If you know anything at all about the famous Thoroughbreds, this book will add nothing to your knowledge. It's written in the form of a dialogue with a fictional groom who seems to have seen every famous horse from Regret to Personal Ensign, and the information is just brief capsules summarizing their careers, and sometimes volunteering opinions based on no evidence given. For me, definitely a "give to a local nonprofit book sale" item. And the paintings... well, I've seen better pictures sent in by 10-year-olds to the Breyer magazine.

5 out of 5 stars Great Storytelling wins again.......2005-10-02

This book gets people excited about horse racing all over again. I join with the 99.99% of the people who have read it and loved it for what it is, great storytelling about a great sport. I have to rebut the negative review by Sysonby, however. To point out grammatical errors when dealing with a story that's written largely as a casual dialogue with one character having a Southern dialect, is to miss the intentional writing style used here. Would one criticize William Faulkner for the same sort of technique used in "The Sound and The Fury"? I'm a well known writer and turf historian so I also have to address what Sysonby admits is quibbling over historical errors. It's exactly that - quibbling over minor details. Don't forget that the plot line follows an old man's memories of racing -- so what if his memory is a little short of perfect? If you've seen the tape of Man o'War beating Sir Barton, it certainly looks like Sir Barton is beaten by 20 lengths, not 7. And when it comes down to it, the "official" 31 lengths win posted by Secretariat in the Belmont was just a guess on the part of the chart caller. Old Leonard remembers it as 30, which is closer than the 40 lengths it looked like to me. Whose memory is perfect, after all? Certainly we can forgive an old racetracker for a little artistic license to his favorite memories? OK, so War Admiral wasn't a big horse...they said the same thing about him being huge in the movie "Seabiscuit" and it didn't ruin that for everyone, did it? As a turf historian, I have to say that I've never read that War Admiral was known as "the Mighty Atom", as Sysonby notes, although I did see the same nickname for him in a book published in the 1970s, in a book trying to pin nicknames on all the Triple Crown winners. He was always "The Admiral" to his racing fans. What amuses me about Sysonby's small minded review is that for hating this book so much, he/she sure read every last word and stuck with it right to the end. That's actually a tribute to the story, since even Sysonby couldn't put it down because it was so much fun to read.

Great book. Charming story and wonderful artwork. I can't recommend it enough. You feel like you're sitting in Louis' Restaurant, downtown Paris, Kentucky, listening to an old hardboot spin his tales.

                                                  Book Description

The IMF, The World Bank Group, and the Question of Human Rights explores various issues facing international financial institutions and their obligations to adhere to human rights norms.

Bahram Ghazi gets to the heart of the most important issues facing the global community today: namely, how to reconcile globalization and the activities of the World Bank and the IMF with the implementation of international human rights rules. His comprehensive work explains the relation between economy, finance, and investments and their impact on the human rights situation. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the author incorporates historical, political, economic, financial, and institutional dimensions into his analysis.

The IMF, The World Bank Group, and the Question of Human Rights features a basic overview of these global financial institutions, their structures and functioning. It proceeds with examples to explain the possible violations of human rights through these institutions' activities. Included is a sizable summary of the activities of the World Bank and the IMF related to human rights, with a discussion of the political perspective of the integration of human rights inside the Bretton Woods institutions and an analysis of the IFI's responsibility regime for non-compliance with their human rights obligations and the existing accountability mechanisms. The author ultimately provides a valuable proposal for ways in which the integration of human rights standards inside these institutions may be improved.

This work tries to analyze the legal human rights obligations of the IMF and the World Bank Group institutions in the most objective way. It is particularly relevant for both NGOs and civil society, groups who do not always know what the IFIs are and what they are doing, as well as to IFIs and the private sector for whom human rights are still very vague and more often associated with politics. With its considerable insight, The IMF, The World Bank Group and the Question of Human Rights will be valuable to each of these groups, as well as to students and academics searching for a tool to achieve a greater understanding of these issues.

Bahram Ghazi received his PhD. from the Graduate Institute of International Studies at Geneva. He is a human rights officer at the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Geneva.

The IMF, The World Bank Group, and the Question of Human Rights is the fourth volume to be published in Transnational's International Law and Development series, edited by Raj Bhala.

"George Stubbs, a Briton was the 18th century's great painter of horses. In the 20th century it is Richard Stone Reeves (RSR), an American " - The New York Times.

Take a look at the prices for RSR's signed prints on one of the online auctions--Sports artist Leroy Neiman doesn't even come close! You could get a Secretariat bobble-head doll for less than half of what you would pay for an RSR print of the same horse.

As befits royalty, most of the oil paintings in this book show the Thoroughbred classically posed, head up, one leg slightly in advance of the other. Swaps is walking away from the viewer, and Damascus and Forego are in full flight in their respective paintings, but most of the subjects stand regally still--either because RSR doesn't like to work from photographs, or because that's what the owner commissioned.

Aside from some commentary on each painting and its subject by RSR, renowned 'Derbyologist' Jim Bolus (who unfortunately died of a heart attack in 1997) provides most of the text about the Thoroughbreds whose portraits are included in this book. They range from the incomparable Man o'War, Citation, Secretariat, and Ruffian (to mention a few) through the not-quite-so-famous Hansel, Fly So Free, and Tabasco Cat, who are still standing at stud. A few English and European Thoroughbreds are also added to the mix. Bolus narrates the history and some interesting anecdotes about each of these fifty beautiful race horses. There are also black-and-white photographs of each horse, a three-generation pedigree, and (more occasionally) a line drawing.

"Royal Blood" comes in a slip-case and Irish linen cover and would make a beautiful gift for your resident horse-lover (that's how I got mine). Hurry though--the price is bound to go up as it has for all of RSR's books.

Richard Stone Reeves is one of the best equine artists of all time with a career that has spanned five decades and hundreds of great horses. His beautiful portraits truly capture the indominable spirit of these champion runners.

Collected in this volume are portraits of many of the best horses he has painted in his long career. Many of these portraits hang in private collections and are reproduced for the first time in this book. Also included are sketches and photographs used in the process of creating the portraits and Mr. Reeves' own comments about the horses and people involved.

Although the gorgeous portraits would be enough to make you want this book, you also get complete historical profiles and pedigree information about each horse from the award winning turf writer Jim Bolus who passed away in May 1997. Considered by most to have been the foremost expert on the Kentucky Derby, Mr. Bolus' commentary provides an excellent addition to the artwork.

This book is a must-have for any racing fan and a valuable reference on the champions of the sport.
