Book Description
Dogs and cats can't tell us where (or if) it hurts, so it's up to us to figure out what's going on and to make them feel better. This comprehensive handbook tells you how to diagnose and treat everything that can go wrong with your canine and feline friends, from finicky eating and barking to blood-shot eyes and limping. Organized by specific body parts and types of behavior, each entry lists symptoms, their possible causes, what you can do, and what your vet will do. A glossary of the most common conditions is included in each chapter.

OK for dog-owners; glaring omissions regarding cats.......1999-02-28
There is MUCH more info here re: dogs. One glaring omission is re: diarrhea. Over-the-counter medicines for dogs are listed; none listed for cats (ones listed cannot be given to cats; this is stated in the book). This is just one example of the bias in this book towards dogs. Don't waste your money if you own a cat!!
Comprehensive and easy to understand........1999-02-23
This book covers just about anything you'll run across with your cat and/or dog. Each entry is fully explained, and contains separate paragraphs concerning what you action(s) you can take and what your vet will do if consulted. It's a very useful reference.

Nectar and Ambrosia for the Liberal Economist.......2003-12-14
To the interested layperson John Mayanrd Keynes is known as a villain/genius responsible for the theory of governmental deficit spending in a time of economic crises. This book in a concise and understandable manner, without recourse to ponderous mathematical formulas, makes a very convincing case for the necessity of governmental intervention.
When people are unwilling to spend and are hoarding cash, it is up to government to inject money into the system by means of expansionary monetary policy, either it is public works in the most dramatic case or reduced interest rates, intended to stimulate investment in a more commonplace scenario.
Fiscal prudence or austerity will not lift the economy out of the slump, for a very simple reason; if everyone is saving and no one is buying, then no one is able to sell and economy is pushed further into a recession.
Villilfied by countless conservatives as an endorsement of governmental intervention and subsequent domination of the people, the ideas proposed in the book are accepted by such respected institutions as the Federal Reserve and merit attention of a person, who would like to claim general economic awareness.
Apart from the the discussion on public spending, there are highly informative essays on German hyperinflation of the 1920s, ruminations on Gold standard and much more; all presented with great clarity and humor, that few if any economists have mangaged to imitate.
When conservatives could still face socialism eye-to-eye........2001-01-13
Writing during the nineteen twenties and thirties, when the specter of socialism didn't yet haunt the Anglo-Saxon ruling elites, Keynes didn't feel his duty to sing eulogies to the free market; on the contrary, he felt his duty as an economist to propose ways through which modern society could supersede the "centrality of the money motive". The essays devoted to problems of politics in this collection, specially "A short view of Russia", "Economic perspectives for our grandchildren" and "Am I a Liberal?" are among the best things written from the liberal-conservative viewpoint on the ideological choices of our age. A must-read.
Exquisite mandarin prose and clear argument.......1999-05-30
John Maynard Keynes at his most beguiling. A series of essays that have not lost their power despite the passage of 70 years or so. As a prose stylist Maynard Keynes could equal his friends Virginia Woolf and E.M. Forster, and he does so in this volume. Perhaps the apogee of essay writing of the Oxford/Cambridge type, this volume has a charm that is absent from his longer works (General Theory, Tract on Monetary Reform, even the Economic Consequences of the Peace). For those people interested in hard edged macro theory, read elsewhere. For admirers of logic and clarity and the British tradition of enlightened common sense, Eureka! You have found it in this book.

Monetary History of the United States, 1867-1960

Book Description
This book examines the much-debated question of whether John Maynard Keynes' greatest work—The General Theory of Employment Interest and Money—was an instance of Mertonian simultaneous scientific discovery. In part I of this study, Don Patinkin argues for Keynes' originality, rejecting the claims of the Stockholm school and the Polish economist Michal Kalecki. Patinkin shows that the theoretical problems to which the Stockholm school and Kalecki devoted their attention largely differed from those of the General Theory and that, even when the problem addressed was similar, the treatment they accorded it was not part of their central messages. In the remaining parts of the book Patinkin presents a critique of Keynes' theory of effective demand and discusses Keynes' monetary theory and policy thinking, as well as the relationship between the respective developments of Keynesian theory and national income accounting in the 1930s.

Patinkin erred when he accepted the claims of Richard Kahn.......2005-03-29
Patinkin's(P)basic conclusion in this book is that the theory of effective demand, presented by Keynes in the General Theory(1936;GT) in chapters 3(chapter 3 contains a brief outline of what Keynes would do in the other chapters mentioned in this sentence),10,19,20,21 and the appendix to chapter 19 in order to explain the problem of involuntary unemployment(the existence of an unemployment equilibrium),as well as why labor ,in the aggregate, would be unable to cut its money wage,is defective because Keynes did not provide any correct microfoundations , mathematical model or economic analysis showing how such a result could occur in a rigorous, formal manner.Patinkin argues that what Keynes meant by an unemployment equilibrium was in fact an unemployment disequilibrium where the adjustment path to a new full employment equilibrium state was very slow to occur in real time because the adjustment path of the general level of prices and wages was sticky and slow as opposed to the classical and neoclassical position that the new equilibrium state would occur quickly because price and wage changes occurred rapidly.(Patinkin completely demolished the strange claim ,made by a number of economists such as Franco Modigliani, that Keynes had assumed rigid money wages and/or prices.)The crucial difference, then, between Keynes's approach and the classical/neoclassical approach, is in the actual speed of adjustment of the level of prices and money wages in the macroeconomic system as a whole. There is some support for this interpretation of Keynes's analysis, but it is based on a study of Keynes's obiter dicta and not on the crucial chapters 19(and the appendix to chapter 19),20 and 21,taken as a whole.Patinkin's crucial error was to ignore the entire D-Z analysis of chapters 20 and 21 and concentrate mainly on chapters 2, 3,10 ,and 19,based on the claims made to him by Richard Kahn and Joan Robinson that Keynes was a poor mathematician by 1927 who had not taken the time to master the theory of value(microeconomics) and thus was unable to formalize his theory of effective demand in mathematical terms despite the enormous amount of time that they(Kahn and Robinson)had spent trying to correct the many errors made by Keynes in writing the GT.Keynes's general theory results can be easily derived by any reader of this review who is able to differentiate and integrate the results provided by Keynes on pp.55-56,ft.2,chapter 20,(pp.280-286)and chapter 21(pp.304-306,especially p.306),where Keynes presents the generalized Quantity theory of money that incorporates the case of involuntary unemployment.Keynes's general theory is simply that w/p=mpl/(mpc+mpi),where w/p equals the real wage, mpl is the marginal product of labor in the aggregate, mpc is equal to the marginal propensity to spend on consumption goods, and mpi is the marginal propensity to spend on investment goods. If mpc+mpi =1,then Keynes's theory merges with the neoclassical theory. On the other hand,if mpc+mpi
<1,then a unemployment equilibrium exists which is impossible to eliminate by decreasing the money wage since the money wage must increase, not decrease,in order to maintain the necessary optimality condition for equilibrium.I recommend this book for purchase as long as the reader keeps in the back of his mind the disinformation that Kahn and Robinson were providing Patinkin over a nearly 50 year period of time in their exchanges of private correspondence,a correspondence that Patinkin just assumed was correct.
Book Description
In 1931, when the young F. A. Hayek challenged the economic theories of John Maynard Keynes, sixteen years his senior, and one of the world's leading economists, he sparked a spirited debate that would influence economic policy in democratic countries for decades. Their extensive exchange lasted until Keynes's death in 1946, and is reprinted in its entirety in this latest volume of The Collected Works of F. A. Hayek.
When the journal Economica published a review of Keynes's Treatise on Money by Hayek in 1931, Keynes's response consisted principlally of an attack on Hayek's own work on monetary theory, Prices and Production. Conducted almost entirely in economics journals, the battle that followed revealed two very different responses to a world in economic crisis. Keynes sought a revision of the liberal political order—arguing for greater government intervention in the hope of protecting against the painful fluctuations of the business cycle. Hayek instead warned that state involvement would cause irreparable damage to the economy.
This volume begins with Hayek's 1963 reminiscence "The Economics of the 1930s as Seen from London," which has never been published before. The articles, letters, and reviews from journals published in the 1930s are followed by Hayek's later reflections on Keynes's work and influence. The Introduction by Bruce Caldwell puts the debate in context, providing detailed information about the economists in Keynes's circle at Cambridge, their role in the acceptance of his ideas, and the ways in which theory affected policy during the interwar period.
Caldwell calls the debate between Hayek and Keynes "a battle for the minds of the rising generation of British-trained economists." There is no doubt that Keynes won the battle during his lifetime. Now, when many of Hayek's ideas have been vindicated by the collapse of collectivist economies and the revival of the free market around the world, this book clarifies Hayek's work on monetary theory—formed in heated opposition to Keynes—and illuminates his efforts to fight protectionism in an age of economic crisis.
F. A. Hayek (1899-1992), recipient of the Medal of Freedom in 1991 and co-winner of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics in 1974, was a pioneer in monetary theory and the principal proponent of classical liberal thought in the twentieth century. He taught at the University of London, the University of Chicago, and the University of Freiburg.

The difference between fixed and circulating capital is fundamental.......2005-07-11
This particular volume of Hayek's collected works covers the very important exchanges between Hayek and Keynes over Keynes's theories of investment and capital originally put forth in 1930 in the Treatise on Money(two volumes).Keynes's General Theory(1936) approaches to investment and capital are the same as in the TM except for Keynes's decision to greatly emphasize the importance of the uncertainty of the information and knowledge base(or,in Ellsberg's terminology, the ambiguity of such information and knowledge) in economic decision making concerning future events(about investment in fixed capital subject to technological change and obsolescence) where the probabilities are both unreliable and unclear.Keynes and Hayek have completely opposite positions concerning the differences between fixed capital, subject to the impact of uncertainty in decision making, and circulating capital, subject to the impact of risk, but not uncertainty.Hayek is very clear-there is no fundamental difference between fixed capital and circulating capital:"To over-emphasize the distinction between fixed and circulating capital, which is, at best, merely one of degree, and not by any means of fundamental importance,is a common trait of English economic theory and has probably contributed more than any other cause to the unsatisfactory state of the English theory of capital at the present time".(Hayek,p.177;see also pp.86,99-100,103-108,168-170,etc.).Hayek's misbelief that he could present a theory of capital that abstracts from uncertainty is in direct contradiction to Keynes's theories that argue[for a modern ,mathematical treatment of Keynes's theories, see any article or book by Dixit and Pindyck on the "real options" approach to investment projects that are fixed(sunk ,durable capital)]that uncertainty and/or ambiguity is fundamental and any attempt to abstract from it can only result in a very special theory applicable in conditions where there is no uncertainty. This book shows the immense gulf that separated Keynes and Hayek intellectually. While Hayek would later acknowledge the importance of uncertainty after the appearance of the General Theory, uncertainty has NO impact at all in the final conclusions reached by Hayek concerning investment and the business cycle.Since uncertainty makes absolutely no difference in the final decision outcome, there is no difference at all between Hayek and a neoclassical economics based on the Ramsey,De Finetti, and Savage subjective approach to decision making.

Book Description
The soothing smell of lavender, rosemary's piney flavor, the bright colors of nasturtiums . . . herbs are wonderful things! In this handsome volume, Mary Preus provides a delightful entree into the world of herbs with detailed instructions on how to grow 50 herbs and how to enrich your life by using them everyday in an herbal lifestyle. Easy and delicious recipes, herbal crafts and gifts, landscaping with herbs, traditional and modern medicinal use, aromatherapy-it's all here in the Northwest Herb Lover's Handbook.
Customer Reviews:
Knowledgeable.......2004-02-20
This is Mary Preus' second book about herbs. The first, "Growing Herbs", covered the basics but was limited in scope. This book expands on the first, guiding the reader deeper into the world of herbs as well as describing 50 of the best-known herbs in detail. While the book is focussed on growing herbs in the Pacific Northwest, it would be a useful book for herb lovers anywhere.
The writer was for 20 years owner of the Silver Bay Herb Farm in Washington State. In the first 80 pages of the book she shares her extensive knowledge of herb growing basics and of using herbs for cooking, healing and crafts. She includes plenty of recipes that are both imaginative and practical. In this section also she explains how to plan and build different types of herb gardens, and how to harvest and preserve herbs.
Most of the book, however, is a detailed look at 50 species of herbs. The writer includes information about planting, propagation, pets and diseases, harvesting and uses for cooking, healing and crafts. I particularly liked the information about the chemical elements found in each species and their value in balanced healing and a healthy diet.
This is a thoughtfully written book from a knowledgeable and experienced herb gardener. The book ends with a calendar of seasonal tasks in the herb garden, a list of the herb gardens open in the region, sources for plants and seeds, and publications and societies of interest to herb gardeners.

From the early passions of the Latin lover of the silver screen' to the adventures of modern day keroes such as Antonio Banderas, Hispanics in Hollywood is an illuminating voyage into the careers and contributions of some of film history's most legendary performers.
Customer Reviews:
Ethnicities Celebrated.......2000-10-05
By JONATHAN KIRSCH, Special to The LA Times "...An illuminating and entertaining survey of films and television programs in which Latino actors, settings or themes figure prominently, "Hispanics in Hollywood" is full of such surprises. Anthony Quinn, perhaps best known as Zorba the Greek, is only one of many actors whose Mexican origins were once concealed, and there are many others whose Latino roots have only recently come to public attention, ranging from Rita Hayworth (born Margarita Cansino) to John Gavin (born John Anthony Golenar) to Raquel Welch (born Raquel Tejada). And it was a young Emilio Estevez who boldly reclaimed his own Latino family history and thus revealed to the world that the real name of his father, Charlie Sheen, is Ramon More often Latino actors found themselves in an awkward dilemma in Hollywood, as the authors of "Hispanics in Hollywood" point out--if their Latino identities were not concealed, they were put to use in depicting stereotyped Latino characters: "maids, slum dwellers, drug addicts and gang members," co-author Luis Reyes reminds us, or "cruel dictators, mustachioed bandits and beautiful señoritas." Only in the last couple of decades have Latino actors and directors enjoyed the opportunity to tell stories about their own heritage in a more open, honest and affirming voice in movies such as "Zoot Suit," "La Bamba," "Stand and Deliver," "Selena" and "A Walk in the Clouds." Reyes, a movie publicist who is also a chronicler of Hollywood's Latin American heritage, describes the book as "an attempt to show the way Hollywood has depicted Hispanic Americans and Latin America, while also pointing out the contributions to Hollywood movies and television made by unsung Hispanic Americans as well as those more famous." Thus, his book can be approached as a serious effort to ponder the issues of race and ethnicity in American pop culture and, at the same time, as one of those useful reference works that can be pulled down from the shelf when puzzling over some old and obscure movie on cable.
