5 out of 5 stars A Magical Trip Down Memory Lane!.......2007-02-16

Thank you, Dave Coskey, for providing a magical trip down memory lane for all of us who remember "the good old days" of Avalon, New Jersey! This highly enjoyable book is filled with rare photographs, interviews, history, and memories of Avalon -- "the gem of the Jersey coast" -- before it was known as an upscale beach town with McMansions replacing the modest cottages many of us lived in during those enchanted summers of our childhoods.

5 out of 5 stars Memories for my family.......2003-11-11

My grandparents lived in Avalon and my mother & uncle spent their teen years growing up there. I purchased copies of this book for them as gifts and they were thrilled! There are many excellent photos of old Avalon as well as great stories of the past of this wonderful seaside location. I highly recommend it!! We can't wait for the 2nd book to be published.

5 out of 5 stars It Shore Is A Good Read.......2003-06-02

Dave Coskey is one of the biggest sports honchos in Philly, the creative talent who has been in charge of the 76ers' marketing and PR departments, and now the Flyers' as well. But you wouldn't know it from this book, since he modestly declines to mention his day job. "Faces and Places From Avalon's Past" features Dave's remarkable collection of photographic images from the early-1900s development town that now is among the most exclusive on the Jersey Shore. Not only are there then-and-now visuals, but the book is chock full of anecdotes and profiles of Avalon's most important figures in its formative years. The book is a labor of love that began as a high school project nearly 30 years ago. Dave's exhaustive research is evident throughout. The best part is that you don't have to have any personal experience with Avalon to enjoy the book and get a taste of life in America in the first half of the 1900s. He plans to publish a sequel that will cover more recent decades, and I look forward to it.

      Product Description

This unique electronic book on CD-ROM has the finest collection of federal documents, photographs, and resources available anywhere about 20th century aviation and space pioneer Charles E. (Chuck) Yeager. Yeager enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1941 at the age of eighteen. He worked as an aircraft mechanic and pilot before going over the Atlantic to fight in World War II. Upon returning from war, he entered test pilot school and so impressed his superiors that he was selected to fly the X-1 from over 125 senior pilots. On October 14, 1947, Yeager broke the sound barrier over the town of Victorville, California. Six years later, on another test flight, Yeager pushed his plane, the X-1A, to new heights, but almost lost his life as his plane came within feet of crashing. During the fifties, he flew several experimental aircraft for the Air Force and investigated various accidents. In 1960 he was appointed director of the Space School at Edwards Air Force Base. He went to Vietnam as a wing commander in 1966 and flew over 120 combat missions. In 1986, Yeager was appointed to the Presidential Commission investigating the Challenger accident. This CD-ROM is packed with over 14,000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software - allowing direct viewing on Windows and Macintosh systems. The Acrobat cataloging technology adds enormous value and uncommon functionality to this impressive collection of government documents and material. Our news and educational discs are privately compiled collections of official public domain U.S. government files and documents - they are not produced by the federal government. They are designed to provide a convenient user-friendly reference work, utilizing the benefits of the Adobe Acrobat format to uniformly present thousands of pages that can be rapidly reviewed, searched by finding specific words, or printed without untold hours of tedious research and downloading. Vast archives of important public domain government information that might otherwise remain inaccessible are available for instant review no matter where you are. This book-on-a-disc format makes a great reference work and educational tool. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, comprehensive, thoroughly researched, and portable - everything you need to know, from the federal sources you trust.

          Book Description

With a huge cult following among figurative art lovers, outsider art fans, and students, Norwegian artist Odd Nerdrum has carved out a unique and sometimes jarring niche in the world of contemporary art. With his Old Master style and his often apocalyptic subject matter, Nerdrum rejects the tropes of Modernism in favor of an emotionalism which, when combined with his remarkable painterly talents, produces works that are not only visually arresting, but which also, by their mere viability, call into question the very foundations of contemporary art. Odd Nerdrum: Sketches, Drawings and Paintings brings together the recent work completed since the publication of Storyteller and Self-Revealer in 1998, as well as earlier work, including, for the first time, an extensive selection of drawings and sketches. At 400 pages, with over 200 color illustrations, this volume is the most comprehensive book available on the work of one of the world's most popular and idiosyncratic artists.

5 out of 5 stars Love Odd Nerdrum...........2006-08-23

I came upon his name by accident when I was reading about some other painters.

Scoffed and rejected by the 'modern-art' world (which is just fine with me), Odd's work is beautiful to look at and become a part of. The stark landscapes that he places his figures in are peaceful yet convey an uneasiness. I can't wait to visit Iceland to see if it's really as beautiful as he paints it.

This is a comprehensive collection (and heavy!!!). Well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Odd Nerdrum: Paintings, Sketches and Drawings.......2006-06-29

I had never heard of Odd Nerdrum prior to picking up this book at a Borders (who charge a whopping $65 for the thing) and upon flipping to a random page i was immediately smitten with this mans work.
His style, technique, composition, subject matter and content are all so delicious. This is a man from the twentieth century, painting in a style straight out of the 17th century with subject and content seemingly out of the distant future.
Odd Nerdrum places women and babies in inuit-resembling sleeping bags in total isolation on a barren alien landscape, naked hermaphrodites sleeping with guns in pools of water, cackling men dancing in unison across a desert landscape and women defecating on rocky cliffs. His paintings are so rich that i could only leaf through the book once before putting it aside for a week.
If you would like to see what Joel Peter Witkin and Rembrandt's child would paint, purchase this book.

          5 out of 5 stars Odd Nerdrum's review.......2006-03-24

Amazing. One or probably the most impressive paintor's book I have. Not easy subjects sometimes, but anyway, always beautiful.

          4 out of 5 stars Odd enough 4 me.......2005-10-12

Well, if so-called modern art makes you sick/laugh/sigh (or whatever), here's one artist you may like, as long as you appreciate sur-realism combined to the works of the Old Masters. Try this book that seems to be the best among the few, with clever lines that explains the approach of the painter and fine and numerous reproductions. Last but not least: go to see his exhibitions (big formats to fill up your eyes) and try his own book "On kitsch"

5 out of 5 stars A Generous Bounty of the Self-Acclaimed King of Kitsch.......2004-12-12

Odd Nerdrum is a painter who polarizes viewers and critics. This very beautifully designed and produced and written tome shows more than just an enormous amount of paintings by the Norwegian giant; this book contains one of the finest essays by Richard Vine about the artist and his place (or misplace!) in contemporary art. It is provocative, haughty, seductive, and honest and as such gives a realistic picture of one of the enigmatic artists of today.

Nerdrum decided early on that he wanted to paint in the fashion of the Renaissance painters and though he had formal training, he soon progressed to self-taught techniques to enter his world of artic terrains which harkens back to the beginning of man as the hunter, gatherer, and sexually obsessed monolith.

The book is generously graphic, giving not only full page and two page spreads of the large works, but accompanying pages of details from these massive canvases. Nerdrum's characters and scenes have changed little since his foray into the tundra landscapes populated by limbless warriors, infants, hermaphrodites, couples and choreographed folk who dance to Nerdrum earthy tunes. The most recent works shown and discussed reveal a loosening of his brush technique but little else changing in the works of the past 25 years.

The term 'kitsch' is usually used as a derogative adjective, but not so with Nerdrum. He feels that most paintings today have nothing to do with gut level reality and it that sort of representation is 'kitsch', then he proclaims himself the king of kitsch. Use that information as you will: critics are still debating the issue. But no matter the titles or the content or the repetition of the themes, there is no denying that Nerdrum has become a household word in the art salons, and this fine monograph certainly justifies much of the clan-like adoration he has gained.

Odd Nerdrum is an incredible painter. You cannot possibly make ANY judgements about his work without seeing some of his originals!
He has earned his place in the art history already, and books like this are useful in reminding you of the the original shock of seeing his work...The shock of recognition I would say!

My god. Could that first review by Pablo be any more gushing?? Almostmakes one think that maybe his review was a plant. These nardowell painters like Odd Nerdrum, Anders Stone, John Curren, to name a few, are only a step higher on the evolutionary scale of art than Thomas Kinkade. If you actually LOOK at Nerdrum's work, you will see all manner of rudimentary mistakes with juxtaposition, perspective and scale. Now i am not trying to preach what is good art and what is bad. But if an artist is being held up as a contemporary master in the style of Caravaggio, Titian, Hals, etc. they will be judged accordingly. Never the less, should one view this book on its own merits and with out preconception, they quite possibly would find it enjoyable. In a gastronomical sence, consider it a nice light salad.

5 out of 5 stars An ultra rare must have reference for artists/students.......2004-06-23

This is an amazing book that gives insite to the painstaking process of painting in the classical manner. Nerdrum only completes about 7-8 painting a year, but his work is some of the most impressive art of this century. This book is a collection of drawings that were done as preliminary studies for paintings. It offers an incredible insight to the process of developing a brilliant work of art, from a modern master. The book was originally published as a catalog that accompanied a tour of these collected works. The museums that exhibited this collection were smaller(ie not nationally known)museums in the mid-west. The photo reproductions are so crisp that you can see every stroke and blend of the charcoal, as well as the lines where the pieces of paper were hinged together to complete these rather large scale drawings. This book is a must have reference for any serious art student who aspires to master the classical techniques of drawing/painting. It is an extremely rare find as according to the inside cover, only 2000 copies were printed. If you can find one, it is worth every penny. An amazing compilation of works from an amazing modern master artist.

5 out of 5 stars A rare treasure worth every penny ... if you can find one.......2003-08-14

I am a painting student, and I bought this book in 1999 when it was still widely available at a reasonable price. It didn't occur to me until years later -- after buying several other books about Nerdrum's art -- that the reproductions in this volume are incredibly valuable, especially to those who wish to fully understand the completed paintings that Nerdrum creates. The volumes featuring his art in recent years, beautiful as they are, usually do not emphasize his drawing skills as this book does. This is truly a fascinating look at the creative process of a modern master -- secure yourself a copy, if you see one available!

4 out of 5 stars A collection of studies done pre-painting........1999-01-08

These are the basis of every one of Nerdrum's paintings. One cannot tell if the painting was done from the drawing or if the drawing was done from the painting. This is an excellent illustration of the long planning and consideration some artists go through before beginning a painting. It shows just one of the many steps Nerdrum goes through, capturing one of the pieces which go into a piece of art which usually would go into the trash. The drawings are usually overlooked, and most beginning painters believe a painting can be started without preperation. This shows how much consideration to EVERY detail is given.

I would have liked to have seen more of the intermediate steps before the finalized drawing, and just more drawings in general. I thought the book was a bit on the short side, but otherwise, this is a fabulous book

                    Book Description

The Ice Age Sabertooth kept its most formidable weapon right in its mouth—a pair of enormous curved teeth with serrated edges like steak knives, as long and as sharp as the teeth of a Tyrannosaurus rex! It was one of the fiercest cats to ever live. And because so many sabertooth cats died in the asphalt pools of what is now known as Rancho La Brea in Los Angeles, scientists know more about them than any other prehistoric cat. Ice Age Sabertooth tells the story of these ferocious predators—how they lived, hunted, and killed their prey, and what they may have looked like.

In this second book in the Ice Age Animals series, stunning illustrations by acclaimed artist Mark Hallett, full-color photographs, fascinating maps, and informative diagrams bring the fierce sabertooth cat—and the world it lived in—to life.

One fan describes the garden that Rob Proctor and David Macke have created in Denver as "the most glorious garden in the Rocky Mountain West.'' Now these two creative designers suggest a bounty of ideas for using herbs in your garden: everywhere in your garden, from splendid borders to humble foot-paths, from background walls to terrace and patio displays. Filled with Rob's beautiful photographs, the book provides a wealth of new ideas for gardeners and herb lovers alike.

4 out of 5 stars Pure Inspiration for the home gardener........1998-10-19

I read the book cover to cover twice in the first week and am now reading it again. Herbs in the Garden is pure inspiration. The title may be misinterpreted by those who have not seen the book. The focus is not on herbs, but rather on how herbs, vegetables, flowers and shrubs may be used together in garden design, or as the subtitle says, "The Art of Intermingling". The book is a breezy walk through the authors' garden, starting with a discussion of foliage as the framework, then working onward through their use of cottage and border gardens, their shade and dryland design (totally avoiding the use of the trendy term "xeriscaping") and concluding with containerized planting ideas.

Written in a casual, conversational style with humorous anecdotes and comments, the strength of the book lies in its geographic versatility. The authors describe their garden but don't dwell on the horticultural requirements of the plants. This allows them to focus on design - how the hardscape and plantings interact - and on the practical knowledge they have gained in years of digging and growing. Gardeners anywhere can adapt the suggestions to fit their own locales.

The book's strength, the lack of horticultural specifics, may also be a source of frustration for some. I kept a reference book handy to look up plants that I was unfamiliar with. This allowed me to quickly determine if an intriguing plant was appropriate for my climate. A beginning gardener, familiar with only a limited number of plants, might find this annoying. A reference chart at the back of the book that does give some information.

Overall, Proctor and Macke have written a delightful book. It reads like a novel, has lovely photographs and will plant dreams of backyard paradises in the minds of garden fanatics. It gave me a bad case of "gardener vision".

                                        Book Description

C.H. Turner pioneered the study of the language and style of Mark's Gospel in a series of articles in the 1920s entitled "Notes on Marcan usage". All but one appeared in the Journal of Theological Studies -- one further "Note" is published now for the first time. It is Turner's articles, reprinted with editorial additions, that form the backbone of the present book. Comparable articles by those who have followed in C.H. Turner's footsteps (G.D. Kilpatrick, J.K. Elliott, N. Turner) are also included. Some of these are published for the first time. These studies into the language, style and usage are relevant for work not only on exegesis, but also on the textual criticism of the Gospel and on the synoptic problem. This volume makes these essays accessible in one place and these together with the new studies form a convenient reference tool for Marcan scholars.

This first novel written in the 1930s by the dean of Mexican-American folklore charts the coming of age of a young Mexican American on the Texas-Mexico border against the background of guerrilla warfare, banditry, land grabs, abuses by the Texas Rangers and the overpowering pressures to disappear into the American melting pot.

4 out of 5 stars George Washington Gomez by Americo Paredes.......2005-09-07

Americo Pardes is a wonderful author. He also writes poems.
George Washington Gomez is a depressing book. It's depressing because Gumersindo Gomez died, at the beginning. It shows great leadership towards, fighting for what is right it also gives you confidences for standing up for your goals.
The Texans Mexicans showed that everyone struggles, and that everyone isn't easy.
One struggle was crossing the Rio Grande Valley. Gualinto needed to provide for his family, since Gumersindo past away.
George Washington Gomez is a racial masterpiece, towards Mexicans (Latinos).Which I believe is cruel, and mistaken killing innocents isn't the way to go. For example The killing of Gumersindo didn't have a caused at all. Texas Ranger needed to look back, and realized that people do have families, to provide for. I also believe everyone wants a safe future. I suggested you to read George W. Gomez.

                                              3 out of 5 stars Mindfullfilling.......2005-09-06

I just recently read Americo Parades' George Washington Gomez. It is about a son who was born in America. He was given the name George Washington Gomez which means he would lead his people in America. George goes through different insults and taunts as he was being raised in Texas. At his school, he was also treated cruelly in front of his classmates. George was raised by his uncle due to the death of his father. He also received some kind of extended love at home and he was treated well by some of his neighbors in Jonesville. When he left his house, it caused many problems in his community. He left his house to do the same thing his parents tried to do before they passed away, to have peace. The writing of this piece was good, but the language of the book was difficult. In order to understand this book, you need to know how Hispanics were being treated "back in the day" in South Texas. My interest level was low because I do not enjoy books that have to do with history. I do not appreciate the fact that Hispanics were treated so cruelly in my state where I live, in my state of Texas. I guess I can say I do not like this book because of the way George and his family were being treated throughout the piece. The genre of this book was fiction. I do not really understand why this book was fiction even though this kind of stuff really did happen to Hispanics in the 21st Century in South Texas. This book is long. If you like reading books about history is meant for you to read.

5 out of 5 stars A pivotal read in Texican American literature.......2001-03-13

Most readers know Americo Paredes as the great folklorist that he was. Because his book George Washington Gomez was not published in the late 1930's when Paredes wrote it, only a rough draft version was released shortly before he died.

To me, this version of Texas historical fiction along the valley border presents a side to Mexican American settlement that few other books reveal. I find Paredes' story powerful and well worth reading.

Gualinto, little George Washington Gomez, is the American born son of his illegal immigrant parents; his father is an outlaw of some notoriety. The birth name his parents give him symbolizes their hope that he will become the leader of his people in America. But their hopes take a big detour as this little boy grows up in fictional Jonesville as a spoiled only son in a matriarchal household. With his father dead, the only strong male role for Gualinto is his reformed outlaw uncle.

Gualinto suffers the insults and taunts of growing up as a member of the poor and powerless society of South Texas. His family is subjected to the cruelities of racist Anglos, including the unattractive side of El Renche, the Texas Rangers. Even in an all Mexican American school for children, Gualinto is embarrassed and punished for his lack of academic accomplishment by the spinster Mexican American teacher . Those classroom scenes remind one of the cruelties found in Tom Brown's School Days and the writings of Charles Dickens.

Surrounded by love at home, treated kindly by some of the Jonesville citizenry, insulated from the cruelities exacted on his sisters who do not adhere to their mother's demands, Gualinto grows to adolescence and a time of continued social positioning that often leads to rejection.

The values that Gualinto develops reflect his survival in the South Texas that is his home. When he heroically departs the community to gain that all important college education, he also departs from the hoped for role his parents once projected. In the end, his story is one of betrayal and tragedy, but not unrealistic.

From having my senior Hispanic students read Gomez, I experienced feedback that was invaluable. They were amazed that such a novel, telling the side of many of their people existed. Tragic or not, the novel rang true for them. I recommend this novel over and over to students, fellow teachers, and readers. It offers an eye-opening view of another side of the South Texas story.

2 out of 5 stars Very Poorly Written.......2000-09-29

This book is very poorly written. There are a number of flash backs that if my teacher hadn't pointed out, no one would have that it was a flash back. The ending is also terrible. Only read this book if you have to much time on your hands.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not great........1999-10-07

This book was okay. It was a first draft, and therefore it wasn't edited. I thought that it was historically accurate, and I liked the book up until the ending for its detail, imagery, and language. There was no correlation between the ending and the story, however. You can't skip about 4 - 8 years, and show a guy completely pro-Mexican and anti-gringo suddenly change into a man that lives with those he once hated, and scorns that which he once loved so much. That may be how the story in real life would have ended, but I personally don't like the idea of filling in all the details. I would have preferred to read an extra 100 - 200 pages to find out how Gualinto became who he became. Although I was disappointed in the last 20 pages, I was impressed by the 280 preceding it, so I gave the book 3 stars.

Poet, novelist, journalist, and ethnographer, Américo Paredes (1915–1999) was a pioneering figure in Mexican American border studies and a founder of Chicano studies. Paredes taught literature and anthropology at the University of Texas, Austin for decades, and his ethnographic and literary critical work laid the groundwork for subsequent scholarship on the folktales, legends, and riddles of Mexican Americans. In this beautifully written literary history, the distinguished scholar Ramón Saldívar establishes Paredes’s preeminent place in writing the contested cultural history of the south Texas borderlands. At the same time, Saldívar reveals Paredes as a precursor to the “new” American cultural studies by showing how he perceptively negotiated the contradictions between the national and transnational forces at work in the Americas in the nascent era of globalization.

Saldívar demonstrates how Paredes’s poetry, prose, and journalism prefigured his later work as a folklorist and ethnographer. In song, story, and poetry, Paredes first developed the themes and issues that would be central to his celebrated later work on the “border studies” or “anthropology of the borderlands.” Saldívar describes how Paredes’s experiences as an American soldier, journalist, and humanitarian aid worker in Asia shaped his understanding of the relations between Anglos and Mexicans in the borderlands of south Texas and of national and ethnic identities more broadly. Saldívar was a friend of Paredes, and part of The Borderlands of Culture is told in Paredes’s own words. By explaining how Paredes’s work engaged with issues central to contemporary scholarship, Saldívar extends Paredes’s intellectual project and shows how it contributes to the remapping of the field of American studies from a transnational perspective.

"Vintage Paredes--at once erudite and clear, scholarly and accessible. . . . It could serve the general reader as an interesting, accessible introduction to this unique Texas scholar who, in Bauman's words, 'has produced the most important and influential scholarship of our generation on the folklore of Greater Mexico in general and the Lower Border in particular.' . . . The newly published collection of essays reflects the range and diversity of his work: ribald jokes and ethnic slurs, the rise and fall of the corrido, machismo in the United States and Mexico, how anthropologists and other scholars are led astray by their informants, the clash of cultures in the Rio Grande Valley today." --Texas Observer In an illustrious career spanning over forty years, Américo Paredes has often set the standard for scholarship and writing in folklore and Chicano studies. In folklore, he has been in the vanguard of important theoretical and methodological movements. In Chicano studies, he stands as one of the premier exponents. Paredes's books are widely known and easily available, but his scholarly articles are not so familiar or accessible. To bring them to a wider readership, Richard Bauman has selected eleven essays that eloquently represent the range and excellence of Paredes's work. The hardcover edition of Folklore and Culture was published in 1993. This paperback edition will make the book more accessible to the general public and more practical for classroom use.

"To see why Gregorio became a folk hero, one only has to remember that in practice there was one law for Anglo-Texans, another for Texas Mexicans. The chase, capture, and imprisonment of Cortez are high drama.... This is an extraordinary book."

                                                  —Tennessee Folklore Society Bulletin

Gregorio Cortez Lira, a ranchhand of Mexican parentage, was virtually unknown until one summer day in 1901 when he and a Texas sheriff, pistols in hand, blazed away at each other after a misunderstanding. The sheriff was killed and Gregorio fled immediately, realizing that in practice there was one law for Anglo-Texans, another for Texas-Mexicans. The chase, capture, and imprisonment of Cortez are high drama that cannot easily be forgotten. Even today, in the cantinas along both sides of the Rio Grande, Mexicans sing the praises of the great "sheriff-killer" in the ballad which they call "El Corrido de Gregorio Cortez."

Américo Paredes tells the story of Cortez, the man and the legend, in vivid, fascinating detail in "With His Pistol in His Hand," which also presents a unique study of a ballad in the making. Deftly woven into the story are interpretations of the Border country, its history, its people, and their folkways.

A fascinating book that examines a border ballad about Gregorio Cortez in terms of the history and culture of the Texas-Mexico border region. The story is not well-know outside of Texas, although it was made into a film in 1988 starring Edward James Olmos. The book was very influential in promoting a greater depth in folklore studies and recognizing that ballads are a performance art and that aspects of the performance add meaning beyond the words.

One of the most important studies of Mex-Tex folklore, this book is excellent. Paredes describes the legends of Gregorio Cortes and then tracks down what can be historically verified about this border hero. He then provides numerous variants of the ballads sung about Cortes and completes his writing by looking at reasons why the ballad remains an important part of borderland culture. Paredes writes beautifully, and the book is a model for fine ethnographic writing. Tish Hinojosa's song "Con Su Pluma en Su Mano" is a tribute to Paredes, one of her professors.

This book is a fine study of Mexican-American folklore. Paredes takes a "literary ethnographic" approach to studying the ballad singer Gregorio Cortez. Paredes develops interesting and rich ways of applying literary analysis to the ballads. He also uses the study of history along with ethnographic inquiry to challenge the image of the Texas ranger as a knight in shining armor. For anyone interested in social history, ethnographic study, and literary approaches to studying culture, I would highly recommend seeing how this fine folklorist integrates all three approaches in a fascinating story. What is especially interesting is that he was taking this approach three decades ago.

5 out of 5 stars With his pistol in his hand.......2000-06-07

This outstanding book gives a wonderful look at the rich culture that developed in the geographic region between Mexico and the United States. The people that lived on either side of the border were a mix of religious ideals, values and cultures joined by need, location and lack of powerful policitical presence from either nation.

This book outlines the similiarities and the differences among the people of this region and explains the rich forklore and presence of this unique culture ...not quite Texan and not quite Mexican.

One remarkable feature of the book is an explanation of the development of the Border Ballad called the "Corrido" as a means of transmitting news, building interest, spotlighting injustices and creating legends. It presents a detailed study of the various version of the focal "Corrido de Gregorio Cortez" as an example. The legend, the facts and the politics are given equal emphasis allowing the reader an overview of a different age.

The facts are well documented but much like the "corrido" itself is very entertaining and well researched by this talented author. It presents much needed background for Mexican-Americans whose cultures were seeded in that land that straddled the politics and sentiments of two nations. This book should be required reading in every high school in states along the US Mexico border!

                                                          Book Description

The folksongs of Texas's Mexican population pulsate with the lives of folk heroes, gringos, smugglers, generals, jailbirds, and beautiful women. In his cancionero, or songbook, Américo Paredes presents sixty-six of these songs in bilingual text--along with their music, notes on tempo and performance, and discography. Manuel Peña's new foreword situates these songs within the main currents of Mexican American music.

This landmark collection is a life's work in poetry by the famous folklorist, novelist and mentor of at least two generations of Chicano scholars and writers. Comprised of a selection of Paredes' poems from the 1930s and 1940s, some of which were published in Texas newspapers, the poetry has both historical and literary merit.
