I had already purchased several useful guides on Wales, The Rough Guide to Wales and Wales by The Lonely Planet, both had their strongpoints, are larger versus this handy pocket size. I wanted more detail on Cardiff so I purchase this next. This pocket size guide has something I value a lot; more internet websites listing for hotels, other places of interest, with a succinct description. Naturally, it has a more expansive list of places to stay, dine, with price range coding. Also suggestions on what to sight see, as one would expect. It is well organized and also has information on the surrounding South Wales area. It has a short chronology of the history of the area. Nice city section and area maps are in the final pages. Limited black and white photos are interspersed in this guide, more would have delighted. This guide had information on local golf with websites. I am an avid golfer and have other golf guides that cover that topic, but did not have some of these included.

A perfect book about the United States.......2002-04-17

This is a wonderful, colorful book of all 51 flags of the states and Puerto Rico. I bought this because a friend in Italy requested a book with all the state flags of the USA. She needed it so she could make a quilt.
She will not be disappointed. The colors and the photos of the flags are first rate. There is also a short story about each state. Actually, every citizen of the United States should own a copy. 10 stars!

Frustration lies in the details.......2000-08-05

I have enjoyed a number of Ames's step-by-step drawing books and was excited to find this one. However, I was somewhat disappointed in it. Here's why. Whereas Ames's other books show completed pictures very much like what I could produce by simply following the steps, in this book, the final results are invariably much more polished with shading and shadowing. That's not a problem in itself, except that Ames provides no instruction or steps which show how to accomplish those additional details. Thus, my frustration. I want my final results to resemble Ames's as closely as possible, but I'm not told how to achieve this. Otherwise, the basic steps are, as always, useful and easy. Just don't expect to learn the details here, even though they are shown in the final picture.

A delightful picturebook filled with true stories of adventure.......2005-08-08

The First Chinook by David Pagel is the story of Arthur T. Walden and his legendary sled dog, Chinook. Impressively illustrated by Rick Allen's woodcuts and engravings, the story begins in the mid-winter of 1917 when a golden-colored puppy was born in New Hampshire. Over the next 12 years Arthur's enthusiastic dog would set mushing records, help popularize the sport of sled dog racing, and become the progenitor of a new breed of sled dog named after Chinook, finally traveling with Admiral Richard E. Byrd on his First Antarctic Expedition in 1928. About the Book :
The Himalayas are known as the abode of Lord Shiva. Its cultural, social, religious and political significance is so vast that it fascinated the foreigners in the ancient past and continues to attract people from every nook of the world. This book has dealt with the cultural aspects of the western Himalayas.
This book has been divided into two volumes. Volume One speaks of the cultural panorama of the western Himalayas in great detail and highlights the art style, its genesis and development, besides the summing up dealt with in the epilogue. In Volume Two, various types of artistic descriptions through illustrations can be observed. One can marvel at the different styles of art and their allied branches relating to several places in western Himalayas, like Harwan, Ushjur, Bejbehara, Pandrathan, Parihasapura, Avantipur, Verinag, Alchi, Tabo and Nako monasteries.

About the Author :
Dr. Sunil Khosa completed his Masters Degree in 1976 from the Department of Art History Banaras Hindu University. Subsequently he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from the same University in 1981 for his research work "The Art of Painting in Kashmir" (Medieval Period). He has been teaching Art History in the faculty of Music and Fine Arts both at Srinagar and Jammu Universities. Dr. Khosa has remained visiting faculty to various Universities which include the University of Fine Arts Khairagarh (M.P.) and the Department of Archaeology S.S.University, Varanasi. He was also offered fellowship in Art History in the National Museum of India, New Delhi. He has a number of research papers to his credit which have been published both in Indian and abroad. His major works are `Art History of Kashmir and Laddakh` published in 1984 and `Antiquities of Western Himalayas` published in 1992.

Didn't live up to the reviews.......2007-08-14

This book is beautiful to look at but not really very helpful at the nuts and bolts. Its design advice is mostly in generalities, and though its building advice is pretty good, I've found more detailed information elsewhere. The discussion of plants is useful up to a point because it has lots of nice pictures, but it, too, is short on practical specifics. For example, it doesn't define "hardy" by referring to USDA hardiness zones, nor does it explain just exactly how to plant. It will say something like 'Depth: moist soil to 6",' but what does that MEAN? For step-by-step advice on building a pond, I'd recommend the Ortho book All About Garden Pools and Fountains. I wish I could recommend a better book on the plant side of water gardening, but I haven't found it yet!

The first pond book you need to read.......2006-08-27

This author describes the historical aspect of ponds, the current trends of ponds and the types of plants and animals found in each type of pond. He lists problems and solutions. Very insightful. I like the ID stuff at the end listing each important plants and animals found in a pond. (He doesn't have turtles though).

When my husband & I bought a house recently, it came complete with a man-made pond, stream, and waterfall.

I borrowed every book about ponds and water features from the library. They didn't own The Master Book of the Water Garden. Too bad. This is the most complete book on the subject I've come across.

To begin with, it has wonderful pictures and makes a great coffee table book, even if you're not looking for water garden information.

There are two indices: one that's general and one that's specifically for plants. Throughout the book are "Problem Solving" asides. Sometimes entire pages are dedicated to answering questions about fish, plant depth, water quality, and much more.

But I thought its strength was the amount of very specific information on the subjects it covers. Other books dealt with just ponds, or waterfalls, or wet and dry streams. This book covers all that as well as fountains, water meadows, bogs, and containers.

Discussions include bridges, decking, walkways, lighting, filters, propagating plants, & the various kinds of liners. Cleaning and maintaining the water feature is included, as well as seasonal upkeep. Designing your water garden, picking plants, choosing a location, & deciding on size are just a few of the subjects covered. And fish subjects aren't limited to just koi and goldfish.

I was most interested in how to drain and repair a leaking pond. This has been difficult information to find. Swindells even tells you what to do with the fish while you're making repairs or changes to the pond.

My only criticism is that the plant index uses the Latin names for the plants. Though it does include common names, in many instances, if you're not sure what you're looking for, a specific plant may be a bit difficult to find. I must admit that there are full color pictures of the plants in the book, though my favorite water plant, horsetails, isn't included.

Excellent Coverage of Pond Construction Techniques.......1999-06-03

This was the only book, that I was able to find, that covered all of the different techniques for pond construction, including fiberglass. For that reason alone it was worth the purchase price. But the book also contains an excellent review of different pond styles and half of the book is a review of different pond plants and animals. But it's strongest point is it's complete coverage of all the different construction techniques and methods.
