Bacteriocins, Microcins And Lantibiotics (NATO ASI SERIES)

Presented here are recent findings on bacteriocins: plasmid-encoded toxins produced by bacteria, which differ from traditional antibiotics in killing only bacteria that are closely related to the producing strain. Included are introductory chapters on bacteriocins, microcins (low molecular weight bacteriocins), and lantibiotics (peptide antibiotics containing lanthionine), further, contributions on pore forming bacteriocins, the mechanisms of immunity to bacteriocins, uptake and secretion, as well as evolution of bacteriocins. It is of particular interest that the lantibiotic nisin is approved for use as food preservative and another lantibiotic, epidermin, has potential as a therapeutic drug against acne.

I think one should make an effort to communicate effectively with those in the country where you are traveling. This book allows you to learn as little or as much as you like. I focused mainly on transportation, restaurants and shopping tips. It was very helpful and in my opinion, a necessity for the foreign traveler.

Author Brings Honor to his Subjects.......2002-06-27

"Songs from the Loom: A Navajo Girl Learns to Weave" is the BEST, most sensitive and comprehensive children's book on the subject. Photographer and writer, Monty Roessel, took a personal approach to creating this book when he chose his daughter and his mother as subjects. He documented his ten year old daughter, Jaclyn, as her grandmother taught her to weave. The fifth grader learned about the practical aspects of weaving; like shearing sheep, carding and spinning wool, natural dyes, and weaving techniques. Nali Ruth (Grandmother) also taught Jaclyn about important Navajo stories related to weaving and the significance of each tool.

This book has an informative, well written text and wonderful graphics. It has many photographs and informative diagrams. Small samples of different rug patterns appear in the margins every few pages, leading to a full page map of the regions associated with the patterns. The wooden Navajo loom is shown in a labeled drawing. The traditional stories of how weaving originated for the Navajo people are on separate pages from the rest of the text, bordered by a rug-type design. I would recommend this book for both adults and children over 8 as a delightful way to learn about this subject. He honors his mother, his daughter, and Navajo weaving with this book.

If you are buying this book for a child, "Navajo Rugs and Blankets: A Coloring Book" by Chuck and Andrea Mobley, with Sam Mike as illustrator, is a must have supplement. Children interested in "Songs From the Loom" will find themselves inspired to experience Navajo rugs and this coloring book is a great way to extend the story!

Talking About It.......2002-06-27

It is a topic that many use slang and euphemisms to describe,or avoid talking about at all. Mother's pass along factual books and try to bravely discuss it with their daughters, who approach it with mixed feelings. "It" has been called many things in American culture, but in Navajo culture, it is celebrated at a Kinaalda.

A young woman's Kinaalda is celebrated around the time of her first menstrual cycle. She celebrates the time when she is being shaped into a woman in a ceremony that lasts two to four days. Photographer and writer, Monty Roessel, allows us to be privledged viewers of 13 year old Celinda McKelvey's Kinaalda. During the ceremony, Celinda wears a traditional blanket dress, takes on the adult role of grinding corn to make a huge corn cake, is literally molded into a woman by the hands of others, and runs a race for blessings of health and longevity. It is a trial of endurance, as growing up often is.

This book presents a view of menstruation that can be difficult to convey to the newly initiated and to those who are still waiting. This book tells us that it is a time to celebrate. It is a time to acknowledge becoming a woman. Celinda is both honored and validated in her new status. She finds support and positive attention during her Kinaalda. Even though many young women outside of the Navajo culture may not want a ceremony for their special time, this book is an asset to own. It is a wonderful way to see this experience across cultural beliefs.

Life on the Reservation.......2000-02-10

I enjoyed both the art work and the text in this short but well-written book. It certainly gives an outsider real information about the lives of Indians living on the reservation today. MS Hotvedt is able to convey in her block prints something of what the dances and traditions must mean to these people. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in contemporary Indian life.

WONDERFUL WOODCUTS!.......2000-02-07

These wonderful woodcuts and related text take the reader into a world vastly different from mainstream culture. The images are taken from Kris Hotvedt's own experiences as she partakes in Pueblo and Navajo life. Owning several of the actual color woodcuts depicted in the book has given our family great pleasure. We especially love "The Coming of the Rivermen" (Cochiti Pueblo), a tradition not observed in any other New Mexico pueblo. This book is a highly recommended look at Pueblo and Navajo traditons as they are still practiced today.

Went straight to the point without a lot of fancy talk. Also has how to train your dog to do other things. Has real life stories to illustrate ideas. I couldn't put the book down and read the whole thing in one sitting.

Since its founding in 1916, the National Park Service has been charged with two equally important and often conflicting missions: to preserve our country's natural wonders for future generations and to develop national parks for the appreciation and enjoyment of visitors. Recalling the era of the great lodges at Yellowstone and Yosemite, Building the National Parks tells the story of how the new bureau's landscape designers, architects, and engineers met each of these challenges, forging a rich legacy of buildings, roads, and trails that both harmonized with the natural scenery and accommodated visitors to the parks. Their achievements -- detailed for the first time here -- have greatly influenced the design of state and local parks and other recreational areas across the United States.

Planners realized the twin goals of accessibility and preservation by developing a distinctive style of naturalistic design. Rooted in the nineteenth-century rustic gardening tradition popularized in the United States by Frederick Law Olmsted and Andrew Jackson Downing, this style emphasized scenic views, variations in topography, and natural features such as vegetation, streams, and rock outcroppings. During the formative years of the National Park Service -- from 1916 to 1942 and particularly through the public works projects of the New Deal -- dozens of projects were completed in such parks as the Grand Canyon, Crater Lake, Mount Ranier, Acadia, Carlsbad Cavern, Grand Teton, Yellowstone, and Yosemite in the style that became inseparable from the natural identity of each park.

Landscape architects and civil engineers provided safe and convenient access on roads that followed nature's contours and afforded stunning scenic vistas. Carefully planned networks of trails and overlooks aided the service in protecting the parks and also gave visitors access to otherwise hidden wonders. Lodging facilities and sites for camping and picnicking, as well as ranger stations and park museums, were fashioned from local materials with naturalistic or pioneer building techniques.

McClelland's story of these early years, illustrated with 118 rare, archival photographs, is one of remarkable feats of engineering and consistently responsible stewardship. Concluding with a description of national park development since 1942, Building the National Parks records the lasting contributions of the National Park Service's designers and engineers.

Too many facts, not enough analysis.......2004-11-06

The National Park Service's (NPS) 1918 statement of policy says that "in the construction of roads, trails, buildings and other improvements, particular attention must be devoted always to the harmonizing of these improvements with the landscape" (123). Linda Flint McLelland's Building the National Parks explains how this was done in the early days of the NPS. Over and over again, the book reminds readers that such improvements, especially those in the Civilian Conservation Corps era, were built so that the landscape was not injured and so they would, as much as they could, blend in to the natural environment.

The volume's explanation of the early construction of campgrounds is one of the more interesting examples of how early NPS landscaping attempted to lessen the impact on the environment. Plant pathologist E.P. Meinecke, known as the father of the modern campground, discovered that human activity caused a myriad of ecological problems and therefore applied his understanding of plant ecology to campground planning and design (279). Meinecke chose campground sites by type of soil, density of vegetation and then "divided up into individual campsites of legitimate sizes, each one offering approximately as much privacy, shade, and other advantages as the other (278). Environmentally conscious readers will hopefully think twice before camping somewhere outside an established campground.

The book presents facts and statistics well, but doesn't tell an engaging story. For instance, the volume lists the overall park visitation statistics from 1914 to 1918, which demonstrates a significant rise, but never offers any analysis on why those numbers augmented. Many journalism professors tell their students to "show, don't tell." McLelland's text tells, but doesn't show. Many pages feel like an organized list of particulars in paragraph form, offering little or no analysis. The pictures and their accompanying captions tell the best story. When investigating landscapes and landscape elements, visual presentation shows more and leaves a more lasting impression than any page of text.

Building the National Parks' title is somewhat misleading. The book also discusses landscaping in numerous state parks across the country. "Building Yosemite and Other Selected National Parks" would not be a far-fetched title as McLelland chronicles nearly every landscape decision at Yosemite and doesn't give other deserving national parks equal share. Perhaps 1916-1940 should be placed in the title after "construction," since that period is the book's focus. The last chapter covers the history of landscaping since 1940 and proves itself as a fascinating portion of the volume, explaining that the "naturalistic harmonies" in NPS landscape design once strictly adhered to have been thrown by the wayside with emphasis on functionality and safety rather than aesthetics (462-467). It goes to show that the period of 1916-1940 was truly the golden age of the national parks.

My three year old Grandson loves anything with wheels on it. He has never been interested when I try to get him to look at a book while I read it to him. Now he is bringing this book to me and asking me to read to him. He has decided books can be fun too.

My 4-year-old son is hugely into Monster Trucks and Monster Jam, so this book is a great pleaser for him. This is the perfect book for young ones who love anything with wheels on it (especially when they're big wheels).

This book is very enjoyable with two to four year olds of our family;however, I was disappointed that Tonka was listed on every truck...and not real monster trucks that compete were highlighted....My fault I guess since I didn't realize it was a generic type book.

The two year old in our family really enjoyed it, but our young four year old who is reading some now was disappointed not to enjoy a story with real trucks like Gravedigger/Eradicator/etc.

I am searching now for a "real monster jam book" and I think he will enjoy it more.

I would buy the book again though with more emphasis on the younger child.

The units inception is preceded by escalating dangers from temporal criminals. Most notable is Blackthorne, the exiled leader of the predecessor to the Temporal Enforcement Division. Blackthorne has his own genetically engineered army and a plan to tear the Earth through environmental cataclysms. This group of four superhumans must race against time to save the earth from Blackthorne's evil plans. Yet even their powers may not be enough to save the Earth from destruction.

The year is 2099 and while technology continues to grow and life is being lived on other planets, there is no War. Terrorists still exist and have begun to wreak havoc on the solar system. The Temporal Enforcement Division(TED) has devised a plan to genetically enhance four individuals with already special abilities.

The four new bloods Jennifer Rose was to recruit excelled in controlling their abilities and had no signs of being power hungry. The team was made up of Logan Summers who had hyperactive senses, Raven Alexandria the clairvoyant, Demona Kenmoor the psychic and psionic, and the most dangerous of all, Orion Pax he is resistant to physical injury.

After undergoing all the procedures to become Temporal Enforcement Cops (TEC) the group was sent on their first mission. The mission rattled even Orion at times. The bomb Blackthorne let loose was teleported through a wormhole and the group must find it before the bomb detinates. The only problem is trying to find which time era the bomb is in. The technology may be advanced but not so much that information is instantaneous; the wait could very well kill.
The team also has to be on watch for Blackthorne's genetically enhanced soldiers, they are more animal than man. One of Blackthorne's soldiers embodies each of the TEC's abilities as well as few more deadly weapons.

The Chronos Project is a sci-fi book that lovers of the genre will certainly enjoy. I thought the prologue as well as various parts of the book were too scientific for me to understand. Towards the middle, the action really started picking up and kept me turning the pages.

Mr. Rios is well ahead of his time. He is an excellent writer of futuristic fiction and I am sure one day a movie will be made out of this book. Well detailed characters and events ensures the reader a wild ride through the solar system. Mr. Rios is someone I am sure we will be reading more about in the future. 4 Hearts
