This book does an excellent job in explaining the stages of grief that a child experiences concerning pet loss and euthanaisa. It is a heartfelt book about one child's experiences and feelings about the gradual death, and ultimate euthanasia of the family pet. I would highly recomend it for simply a reading pleasure or more importantly in assisting an adult explain euthanasia to a child.

I've lived in Austin for about 6 years and honestly didn't think I'd find too many new gems in this book. I was wrong!!!! I found a few of my favorite restaurants and stores, but now have a new list of places to hit. So far I haven't been disappointed and can't wait to try the guides for other cities.

Seriously intriguing, amusing and disgusting..........2000-12-12

I'm a middle school teacher who leads my classes through a study of Treasure Island every year. I use this program (25 discs of it) to let the scholars explore the life and conditions of sailing in the 18th century. The CD-ROM is an excellent adaptation of the book by the same title. The detail and depth of layering in the information is astounding. Each deck shows different aspects of life aboard ship, and each section (fore to aft) shows different conditions (in port, in battle, etc.) that the sailors could experience. There are terrific narrations and pronunciations, all in British dialect. Each role aboard ship from Admiral to Cook is outlined in journal style. The art is just as good as that in the book; if you know and like Biesty's work, you'll not be disappointed. The animation is amusing and pulls no punches about the brutality of shipboard experience, from the condition of the food to the rigors of combat. Be forewarned: naval battles see their share of severed limbs, splinter wounds and drowning men, all depicted (but not glorified) accurately. Embedded within this excellent learning tour is a cute little game in which the scholar searches the scenes for a little stowaway kid who gallavants and runs away when you find and click on him. He/she who finds him ten times thoughout the ship qualifies for a puzzle game that I still can't solve (you choose if that's good or bad, and let me know the answer if you figure it out). All in all, I'd recommend this title highly to anyone interested in a non-sugarcoated view of life "before the mast" in the 1700's.

Beautiful and sensual.......2005-09-09

I only discovered about Paul Cadmus a little bit ago, but was simply blown away by his style and art. This book is a wonderful introduction to the life and art of one of the twentieth century's quietest artists who remained active to the very end of his long life, and managed to cross both gender and sexual barriers to breathe new life into what most of us would regard as a dry subject -- namely, art. Here Cadmus' love for, and vigor, show through in more than seventy drawings, many of them of his life partner and lover, Jon Anderson. Techinically brilliant, they are also sensitive without being overtly erotic -- enough so that I wouldn't mind hanging any of the artist's prints in my own home. Both lovers of art and artists will like this one, the reproductions are crisp enough that Cadmus' style of crosshatching and use of charcoal and chalk will both inspire and bring enjoyment. Recommended.

An artist in step with a better time.......2003-01-02

This book is a treasure for any Cadmus fan. While Lincoln Kirstein's 1992 monograph includes reproductions of all of Cadmus's major paintings, it only has a dozen or so of his figurative drawings. Justin Spring's book more than makes up for this lack (it has 67 color plates). The fact that he does so by taking on the seemingly narrow focus of male nudes is truly appropriate. While the paintings are often highly active, heavily detailed social satires with not-so-subtle homoerotic elements, the drawings are calmer, context-free, more admiring meditations on the male form. They are clearly the work of an attentive observer and a disciplined draughtsman. When the art world was going ga-ga over abstract expressionism and slap-dash gestural drawing, Cadmus was painstakingly working in virtual isolation. And though a number of sketches are included in this volume, it is the finished drawing that most interested Cadmus. Reginald Marsh, Jared French, Pierro dela Francesca, Michaelangelo, Signorelli, and Ingres were his dominent influences. Along with ballet photographer George Platt Lynes. And from writer E.M. Forster he acquired a philosophic outlook that would guide him both as an artist and as a man: "tolerance, good temper and sympathy--they are what matter...if the human race is not to collapse."

Spring's five essays (Introduction, Beginnings, Development, Maturity, Conclusion) provide everything you need to know to fully appreciate the plates. He addresses Cadmus's homosexuality directly and without sensation and discusses Cadmus's well-reasoned reluctance to be associated with more blatantly sexual gay art (including his refusal to have one of his works reproduced in a biography of Tom of Finland, an admirer of Cadmus). Spring also identifies the models for many of the drawings; this is significant because Cadmus considered his drawings to be a collaboration between himself and his models. Cadmus's life partner Jon Anderson was his frequent subject from the late 60s until the artist's death, and it is fascinating to see how Anderson's body changed over time; the model clearly never lost his sense of comfort and ease modeling nude.

Not revisionist history, just a long overdue update on a neglected but significant American artist of the 20th century. Universe Publishing (a division of Rizzoli International Publications) is to be commended on the design and quality of this book.

A good overview of injury diagnostics and treatments .......2006-11-11

This is a really handy little book that I would recommend to any horse owner. First time owners in particular will appreciate the well laid out format and clear explainations.

The book is laid out in clearly defined sections that look at such topics as; different practitioners and their approaches, rehabilitation, injury causes and treatments etc. Within each section a wide variety of injuries\treatments are discussed in some detail.

The book itself is aimed at the owner and provides good practical instructions, clear photos or diagrams and takes care to explain all terms used. The advice given is practical and gives the reader good options rather than preaching.

Although, a single book such as this is not going to provide full indepth information on any particular injury this is an excellent overview of injuries and treatment and gives owners good information on how different diagnostic tests or treatments work. Certainly something to keep in your library or stable bookshelf to refer to.

John Carpentier Has done Packer Fans as well as football fans a service by putting together a concise accounting of various packer items dated between the 1920's to the present. This Book is a must for any Packer Memorabilia collector. It serves well as a guideline. I have found that when purchasing items I pay the lower price as I know what items are worth. I love japanese gardens but this is not so easy. Great pictures and great ideas but I'm not very handy. I wish it was made a bit easier to follow. Some supplies are not easy to find in my area. But great ideas anyway.

My family found a number of fun projects in this book. We'd been thinking about ways to accent our flower beds and found useful project in this book. We created some different birdhouses as well as a few paths throughout the garden. We very pleased with the results.

A very interesting and informative look at Regency leisure........2006-03-02

The many Regency-era history buffs will be delighted with this look at the buildings where the upper classes entertained themselves and be very grateful to Jane Rendell for pulling this together into a readable volume. This would be a good choice for their reference shelf. I hesitated at first, since this is obviously an academic work which I feared would be too specialized, but I recommend it to the general reader.

Rendell has not limited herself to an examination of the buildings, but also looks at social factors such that affected their design, such as the illegality of some of the pursuits, and also at how people actually used them. The book is illustrated throughout with the wonderful illustrations that the Cruikshanks did for Pierce Egan's Life in London.

I found Chapter 1, wherein Rendell explains how she came to write this book, somewhat off-putting and stiffly academic, but most of the book is extremely readable and absorbing, with occasional, rare intrusions of academese.

Rendell explains that she was "seduced" by two texts: Luce Irigaray's "Women on the Market" and Pierce Egan's Life in London. I was originally going to say that Irigaray could have been left out, for my taste, I find these analysis inadequate. But I rethought that. At 52, I am old enough to remember how history used to be done, when only political events were "real" history and woman were usually counted among the furnishings, so even if such feminist theorizing sometimes seems silly or lacking in nuance, it is one of the things that has broadened and enriched our understanding of the past.

There is an excellent bibliography, and an index. The notes have running titles giving the pages to which they refer, and so are easy to match with the text.

My compliments to the publisher: the book is well-edited and beautifully printed with generous margins, easy to read type-face.
