Great Layout.......2007-08-23
I like this guide because of how easy it is to read. Most travel books are arranged by activity (hotels, sights, restaurants, etc.), but this is by area, which makes it very easy to find what you are looking for. Like any travel book, there are things which are out-of-date, but that should be expected; one should never whole-heartedly trust any one information source, especially when it pertains to travel. Used in tandem with another guide book and/or the internet, this is an excellent tool.

I have travelled quite a bit through the years and have always relied on Frommer's and Fodor's, but Moon blows them away! Fantastic insights, great suggestions. I just planned my honeymoon using this book and located a wonderful hotel that the travel agents don't know about! I will use Moon guides from now on!
Low level descriptions, lack of useful information, out of date.......2007-01-02
Can't believe how lousy this book is. We just went to Cancun, and much of the information here is out of date. The "must-see" place claimed by the book such as las Pallapas, is just an empty, run-down, lifeless square in the afternoon. Surroundings of the square looks unpleasing as well. Can't find any really useful tip for Cancun.

This is by far the best guidebook to Cancun and surrounding area out there. The depth is incredible; the authors mention somewhere that they stayed in Cancun for two months, and it shows. It's not just Cancun either - the coverage of Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, the Mayan ruins, and all up and down the coast is excellent. The problem with some guides (Lonely Planet, Frommers, etc) is they "take sides" - they're either too cynical about "gringos on vacation" or totally ignore anything that's not sold in a package. The Moon book really showed both sides: from beaches and nightclubs and five-star restaurants, to museums and Mayan ruins and street food. (Real culture in Cancun - who knew??) There's also good suggestions for people traveling with kids, another complaint of mine about some guides. We got all the R&R we wanted, plus a few things I didn't expect. Moon isn't a well-known name, but this book is worth getting.

I'm a big Nick Cave fan, and a writer myself, and this book is not worth the paper it's printed on. Save your dough for Nick's cds.
Essential for Cave fans.......2001-12-12
Aside from being simply one of the greatest songwriters now working, Nick Cave has various literary aspirations. In addition to publishing a well-received novel (And The Ass Saw The Angel), he has also put out two books of collected works, this being the first. This contains all of his early poetry (which was heretofore nearly impossible to find), as well as all of his lyrics through Your Funeral, My Trial (including unreleased songs), a couple of short, one act plays, and a few other writings (including a piece on how he met Blixa Bargeld.) Cave fans will want this for its convenience of having all of his early lyrics in one place (it contains those from The Birthday Party, Die Haut, and all), and will treausure it for giving them more of Cave's works. This goes to show what a true talent Nick Cave is. Essential for all fans, and, even if you've never heard of Nick Cave, you may well be quite surprised and delighted at the quality of his work held within.

I stumbled upon this book on a sale rack at a local bookstore, and it is worth much more than what I paid. There is poetry/lyrics, an essay, drama, and drawings. Nick Cave's work may not be appealing to everyone, but I still think that he is an truly gifted artist.
A Beautiful Collection Of Nick Cave's Early Works.......1998-04-16
King Ink is one of the most eye-oppening collections of written artwork done by any living artist. I have been a fan of The Birthday Party and Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds for about a year and finding this book was the pinicle of understanding and relating to Nick Cave's writing. A must for any fan. Even if you aren't a fan, this book can still be appreciated in completion.

Even If You Have All His Albums..........2002-03-21
There is the beautiful book cover in purple, there are the lyrics printed in verse format...but mostly , there are the scrawling, handwritten notations of a [pick your adjective]
madman/poet/devout/philosopher/philanderer.
And the drawings Nick Cave makes...oh my, he seems to be at war with himself and that is Really interesting. You will enjoy seeing different lyric versions, and his writing in progress as things get crossed out and then re-written. This book is definitely a must have for the Nick Cave devotee.
Essential Cave, shows his growth.......2001-12-12
A big improvement over his first King Ink collection, this book shows just how far Nick Cave has come as a songwriter. Collecting his lyrics from his masterpiece Tender Prey all the way through his masterpiece The Boatman's Call, this shows Cave tackling broader subjects with an ever-more-eloquent pen, but staying "chained to the same bowl of vomit" as he puts it, returning again and again to the recurring themes of love, loss, God, and death. He delves deep into these themes in all their revertebrations. This book also includes lyrics to songs that have thus far remained unpublished, or were written for other artists, as well as a short "movie treatment." Also included is a manuscript of his essay "The Flesh Made Word", long adorned by Cave afficiandos, which probably makes it worth the price of the book alone for them, just being able to have a printed copy of this masterful essay. Reading this - you can also hear him dictate it on his CD, "The Secret Life of The Love Song/The Flesh Made Word: Two Essays By Nick Cave" - you can see why he was chosen to write the forward for a version of The Gospel According To Mark. Cave is a true talent, and this proves it. Essential for all admirers.
Brilliantly Twisted.......2000-04-19
Nick Cave has developed much since the publishing of King Ink volume I. A clearer style is developing, much different from the frenetic ravings in the previous book, a style more inspired by the recurring themes of loss and redemption. Some of Cave's beautifully crafted melancholy poems are simply perfect down to the last detail, though his fiery passionate bits are equally brilliant.
Bottom Line: If you like Cave and his newer style - go ahead. If you're into gloomy poetry, or just great use of language - go ahead.

This second collection of Cave's lyrics shows his developing command of the language and broadening subject matter.

Best Crabapple Reference Ever Seen.......2007-02-10
If you love beautiful Spring color and have lots of room to try lots of flowering trees this book is a must. From a Horticultural point of view I have never seen anything like it. It provides brilliant photos and great detailed information on more Crabapple varieties than I ever knew were out there. In making selections for our campus properties I use Fr. Fiala's disease notations and make marginal references in my wholesale tree catalogues to improve our selection for climate adaptability as well as disease resistance. If you live in colder areas of the country and deal much with plant specification for 'park type' landscape this book is a must.

Narrows down to the crabapple, and does a nice job of it. Found it very readable for a deep look intothis fruit. For a wider view might suggest Story of the Apple (Juniper).
Very informative.......2003-07-23
This book sorts out the very confusing nomenclature of crabapples and explains all there is to know about the origin of the noumerus cultivars (among other things). It is an outstanding refrence for anyone with an interest in crabapples. The only thing I was a bit disapointed with is that it doesn't have much information regarding hardyness. I really recomend this book for anyone with an interest in crabapples.

Seeing is believing..........2000-04-26
The story reads very much like J.D. Salinger's Catcher in theRye, except that JD's was a work of fiction and Vilar's is a true andheart wrenching account of her own experience. From a literaryperspective, it is obvious that Vilar is young. But this work holds the promise of greater literary works by Vilar. Vilar's talent is in her ability to drag you in to her story and aid you in understanding it without too much of a fuss. The books makes great reading for HS students. It is valuable in terms of it's linkage to contemporary historical facts about which HS students may just be learning. The books biggest benefit is in its telling in the intimate way only an insider can about the aftermath of political actions of the 1950's.

In "Hispanic Scientists," Jetty St. John has written short biographies of 5 fascinating individuals: biomedical engineer Carlos A. Ramirez, astronaut and optics expert Ellen Ochoa, zoopharmacognosy pioneer Eloy Rodriguez, neurology researcher Lydia Villa-Komaroff, and botanist Maria Elena Zavala.
St. John offers insights into both the lives and work of these scientists. The book contains many photographs, as well as a useful glossary and other resources.
If your child seems to be fascinated by dirt, bugs, cloud formations, body secretions, or other natural phenomena, she just might be exhibiting the beginnings of scientific curiosity. And "Hispanic Scientists" may inspire her, regardless of her own ethnic background, to take that curiosity to some amazing places.

A compelling memoir.......2006-08-11
I recently returned from Cuba, and it has been quite difficult for me to reconcile the bitterness of Cuban Americans with the beauty of the island. I have been reading a lot of Cuban American memoirs from the 1.5 generation recently, and Maria Del Carmen Boza is the first author who I have seen to set aside her anger over losing her homeland with the Revolution and creating a real portrait of Cuba in the 1950's. A beautiful piece of literature, I highly recommend this book.

Scattering the Ashes.......2000-05-15
Reading about the betrayal by the Kennedy administration of the invasion by Brigade 2506 was one of the first topics that shaped my view of things. It may have been in "None Dare Call It Treason" which I read in 1964. In any event, it made a great impression on me as a twelve-year-old boy. In the same time period, I was reading "Reminiscences" the autobiography of Gen. Douglas MacArthur and "Conscience of a Conservative" by Sen. Barry Morris Goldwater. Reading details of Giron in Maria's book, details which were unavailable in 1964, brought back all of the personal anguish which I felt at the time and somehow it was a reassurance that the frustration and anguish which I have held close to my heart all of these years was a validation; a validation of my own life.
The failure to defeat Castro by actually supporting actions like Brigade 2506 has been the most disastrous blunder in American history. Certainly, I think that it ranks as first place as the damage that Castro has inflicted upon the world as a Soviet client state has had the most direct impact upon my country. The betrayal of Chiang Kai-Shek and the Alger Hiss conspiracy with Joseph Stalin at Yalta would rank second and third. Every time I view something by the CBS news department, it reminds me that I'm in "internal exile" in my own country.
I have a great respect for Maria del Carmen Boza for writing about her family in such a close personal way as it exposes her private life to the public. To bring all of their vastitudes and personal strengths and weaknesses to public view gives me a greater appreciation of myself and the value of life itself. For this gift I can only say "thank you."
scattered and repetitive.......1999-01-09
I am an avid reader of latino fiction and eagerly bought this book hoping that it would be a good addition to my latino literature course. I was thoroughly dissapointed. The text is repetitive and awkward in its prose. Worst of all it presents as a text about Cuban exile, but reads like a tale of a woman who has unresolved issues with her dead father and her disconnected mother. If you are interested in reading about a woman's struggle to understand her identity--this book is a decent read.
A moving story about reconciliation with the past.......1998-07-08
The act of emigration is traumatic for most of us, who retain the freedom to return to our homelands, to visit family and friends, to find the comfort of familiar sights and sounds. In Ms. Boza's memoir, a fragile young girl emigrates to this country as an exile who can never see her extended family or home again. She writes a poignant and thought-provoking story about her struggle to make peace with her past and move on with her life. While this book is not eary to read, it is beautifully written and worth the effort. I'm still thinking about it.
A courageous book -- difficult and rewarding........1998-05-15
Think of Cuban exiles and you will likely come up with a stereotypical figure -- rich, right-wing, insane. In the US this prejudice is largely unexamined. Cuban exiles are easy to dismiss. But I wouldn't dismiss this one.
Boza, a Cuban exile who came to the US when she was eight, has written a courageous book -- her first. Compelled to discover why her father committed suicide -- she explores the effect of the political on the personal within her own family, and within the exile community.
Boza writes compellingly about this life in exile, a life sometimes warped by memories of the old and the realities of the new. Her father was a player in Cuban exile politics, and was consumed with this, becoming more and more bitter after the Bay of Pigs fiasco. Yet he is sympathetic, and Boza is successful in writing honestly of an imperfect man in a way that makes his obsession understandable if not troubling.
But this memoir is not just about her father. It explores how, after coming to Miami, life in exile unravelled, how personal things, and connections with the commonplace - birthdays, clothes, food -, became more and more of an abstraction. And she writes about her own struggles to make her own world concrete again.
It is a difficult book in some ways. Boza moves against the grain. Her narrative skips in time. At times the narrative intrudes on our own sense of privacy making us a little uncomfortable. She often interrupts the narrative, disrupting the political with the personal or vice versa, taking long detours around the subject. Memory intrudes - some pleasant, some ugly. We look at it all. But the writing is strong throughout, and there are numerous long sections that are poetic if not sublime.
Life in exile, in spite of the ease with which we can imagine it, must have been/must be strange and isolating. Much more so for an eight-eighteen year old to watch ones parents slip into a kind of madness. There are no heroes in this book. But it took a lot of courage to write.
