    Book Description

This volume contains a selection of 14 articles dealing with different aspects of biomonitoring and their relation to questions of global change. The first part concerns general aspects of biomonitoring. The second part gives examples of applied biomonitoring in Germany and Switzerland (changes in species composition, phenologies, vegetation restoration, changes in soil conditions, and heavy metal concentrations). The third part deals with climate-related monitoring studies of arctic-alpine and temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere (mountain peaks and timberline ecotones of the Alps, spread of exotic evergreen broad-leaved plants, phytomass and carbon balance in Svalbard).

    5 out of 5 stars awesome book.......2004-12-10

This book is awesome! It provided all the information I needed for a wonderful trip during the Thanksgiving break. Its reviews on hotels, restaurants, and clubs were all proven to be accurate. I followed its advice and had a good time eating fresh oysters at Acme Oyster Bar, drinking cafe au lait and eating beignets at Cafe du Monde, riding the St. Charles streetcar, listening to great jazz at the Preservation Hall, touring the Oak Alley and Laura plantations, and drinking Hurricane at Pat O'Brien's.

I did not know Pat O'Brien's before going to New Orleans. In this book, Mary Herczog said 'what trip to New Orleans is complete without sampling the famous Hurricane (at the Pat O'Brien's)?' Believe me, she is right on this one! I had a great time at the piano bar singing along with two very talented singers while drinking Hurricane.

One thing they might want to improve is the map. It is a new feature but it doesn't have a lot of information on it.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Guide.......2004-07-11

The maps and suggested itineraries are great. With this book I was able to quickly orient myself in this cool town and see lots of interesting sites. I would buy it again.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing and a Little Confusing..........2003-06-02

Overall, I found this book somewhat difficult to use. My focus on my first visit to New Orleans was the French Quarter and I found the maps to be very lacking. The cross streets were not listed on part of the map, so we actually had to locate another map at the hotel to take with us. We visited several of the places not recommended in the book (like the flea market in the French Quarter), and if you are looking for typical "tourist" type items, then this is by far the cheapest and best place to shop! I would definitely recommend purhasing another book in addition to this one to get someone elses perspective on the French Quarter.

5 out of 5 stars Great book! Great writer! Highly Recommended!.......2002-09-17

I thought this was a really great book--I only wish it was longer!

The section on Mardi Gras (especially the author's personal memoir of being on a float) was particularly excellent, showing how you could enjoy the celebration in your own way--either nice, naughty, or nasty, which should include everyone on the spectrum from families with young children to raunchy college students.

The walking tour section was also really good. It was nice to have a "guided tour" through the Garden District and Esplanade Ridge, which many tourists may not get around to doing, but you should.

I also really liked the after-dark entries. I got a feeling the author really knew what she was talking about when it comes to music (which is what you're supposed to do in NO, right?).

All in all, I thought this was great. Try it. You'll like it.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Guide: Reliable and Proven.......2002-09-10

I looked at a number of guides to New Orleans before selecting Frommer's 2002 New Orleans to help me with my trip. Frommer's was my favorite. It provides detailed, accurate and reliable information on attractions, hotels, restaurants, shopping, and various other topics. Frommer's was by far the most comprehensive guide I saw for most topics. I was particularly pleased with the down-to-earth discussion of attractions: museums, parks, bars, public places, etc. The maps were also excellent: a good map (in reality, several good maps) is a necessity for getting around New Orleans and making the most of the city. Frommer's guide provides better than average maps and good information on attractions that will help ensure you're making the most of your time. As a bonus, the attractions are marked on many maps near the parts of the book where they're discussed, and when you see how New Orleans streets are laid out, you'll understand how useful that is!

I was disappointed in the guide's coverage of restaurants, though. I thought they detailed relatively few restaurants, and found their descriptions and ratings fairly weak. My sister, who lives in New Orleans, took us to several "locals" places that were at least as good as the highly rated restaurants in the guide. The lesson is: don't be afraid to experiment. If you need to rely on a restaurant guide, choose another. Better yet, ask some locals. My personal favorite was NOLA (get the duck!). The Palace Café gets a strong recommendation, and if you're in the French Quarter and want a casual lunch, try Central Grocery for great mufalletas. Café du Mond (coffee and beignets) was a must for me, and I didn't find it disappointing.

With the exception of eateries, I relied much on Frommer's guide when planning my trip, and also when we were there. I found the guide's advice to be reliable and concise. It offered great descriptions of attractions, and helped us find several which were perfect for kids (we traveled with our 2-year-old). In particular, we found Audubon Park, The Audubon Zoo, and City Park fantastic for kids and adults alike. Moreover, the guide's information typically matched the things the locals told us.

Frommer's will help you get the most out of New Orleans, but equally important is a willingness to try new things and be adventurous. The French Quarter is great, but you'll likely find things you like a lot more in other parts of the city. Frommer's does an excellent job of laying out the material in a format that you can either read through, or easily use as a reference guide. Either way, it should help you find most of what you're looking for. I can unconditionally recommend it, both because it was the best guide I found before I headed to New Orleans, and because it proved its worth when I was actually there. It definitely added significantly to our enjoyment of the trip.

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best Tutorial Manual!.......2002-04-05

This is one of the best tutorial manuals I have ever used. It is written in an easy to comprehend and "chatty" style, which makes you feel that "Sam" is right there with you whenever you switch on Illustrator 9.0 and start learning. I sped through the tutorials, which are fun to do and practice later on and whenever I need a refresher on a specific point I still turn to this definitive teaching manual. The only part that could have been better described was the construction of patterns and tiles. It took me a while to figure it out as the section was glossed over somewhat. The Adobe manual for Illustrator 9.0 comes into its worth only after you have grasped the basics and these are provided by working through this marvelous instruction book. In record time I was able to use Illustrator 9.0 for all our book cover artwork and design/publishing needs. Our finished product is "Accused By Facet-Eyes, A Classic Science-Fiction Novel" (C.B.Don) so you can take a look at what can be done once one has graduated from "Sam's Teach Yourself Illustrator 9.0" school! Highly recommended and essential...thank you Mordy Golding "Sam"!

5 out of 5 stars This book should come with the software . . ........2002-03-30

I have been using Illustrator since version 5.5 and have always had difficulty understanding why it did some things differently from what I was expecting. I should have bought a Mordy Golding book years ago as it alone has given me the insight I needed to make this program do what I wanted it to do.

Once you have this understanding then the other books will help but I've found that most of them don't help you get that basic user experience and understanding of this program.

If Adobe wants users to switch from Freehand, it should be giving this book away with every crossgrade. It really is that good.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Sam Will Change Your Life.......2002-02-21

I have to say that for someone who has no illustrator skills and needs to learn illustrator for personal or professional purposes; This is the best way to start. It builds up your skills from going over the basic to explaining what every palette/window will do in a smart sequence. Other books are more like user guides that cover things without any order making it difficult to learn. After you read this book( it takes about a week to finish if you sit down everyday for a few hours) you will be able to start exploring how illustrator will benefit your needs. GOOD LUCK AND ENJOY THIS BOOK ITS LOTS OF FUN & EASY READING

2 out of 5 stars Very detailed but jumps all over the place........2003-06-01

I liken this book to a book on how to work on cars. They start the book with an nice paced introduction and before you know it they start jumping all over the place....Ok here is where the oil goes and then if you want to overhual the transmission here is what you do and then here's how to change the windshield wipers and here's how to overhaul the engine. Advanced techincal areas are intermingled with simpler beginner techniques throughout the book. I was especially disappointed in the small areas of the book devoted to the use of text. Kind of interesting since a quote from the book is that text is a powerful way of graphic expression. Of the 554 pages they devote 30 to the use of text.

I have been impressed with the SAMS books in the past but this one is a dud.

3 out of 5 stars If you can get past the mistakes.......2002-09-27

There were so many mistakes (especially pages 20-22) that I have to double check everything I read from there on. And there are no corrections posted on the publisher's web page for the book so they either think the book's error free or they just don't care. I emailed them and asked if there was an errata page and got one of those replies you often receive from big companies that showed they didn't even really read my email in the first place.

      4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2002-01-07

I liked this book. Precise, easy-to-follow, and a page turner. I'm interested by graphic design, and is Illustrator 10 is one of vector programs. This book is recommended if you plan to know anything about the new version.

      4 out of 5 stars Illustrator 10 Explained.......2002-01-05

I've had Adobe Illustrator 9 for almost a year and still haven't gotten completely through Deke McClelland's Real World Illustrator 9 book. I recently upgraded to Illustrator 10 and started reading Adobe's User Guide, which as usual is not all that great for beginners. Sam's Illustrator 10 book is actually very helpful for those never having used Illustrator before, which I haven't (although I am experienced in Photoshop). The book could be helped with a CD and color diagrams, but otherwise it is a straightforward instruction book that is easy to read. It gives both the Mac and Windows versions when there are differences. Overall I'm satisfied, especially since I got it on sale at Amazon and it's currently the only Illustrator 10 book available.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book to Start Learning Illustrator 8.......2000-06-18

I am new Illustrator 8 and do not feel comfortable with the Adobe User Guide... which I think is showing too much in a small book...

This book is great. It has useful illustrations that greatly supports the explanation. I guess only with enough illustrations one gets to know the features and how the tools can be used in different ways to produce the different effects in the illustrations.

This book is a great help to me in learning Illustrator 8. I think you will also love it if you are also new to the software.

4 out of 5 stars An ugly duckling but..........2000-02-06

This black and white "ugly duckling" is quite informative. Like most books it leaves something to be desired when more complex tasks are attempted; i.e. the gradient mesh function. If you're new to Illustrator, like I am, this book will definitely get you going in the right direction. After finishing this book I bought "The Illustrator 8 WoW Book"; see my review on it. Also, remember that many of the aspects of Adobe Illustrator have similar functions in Adobe Photoshop; of which I'm already very familiar. For all you "newbies" out there or old time Photoshop hands, this book will get you up to speed. Finding the next book to keep you moving speedily forward is another story. I'll keep you posted on my next findings. Until then, the novice "vector image" student is outahere.

      5 out of 5 stars Worth It.......1999-07-09

Start to finish great lessons of everything Illustartor offers. Detailed but not too slow. Good book.

                  Book Description

                  The purest of human joys

Enduring inspiration to countless artists, Provence is a rural paradise, a verdant, fertile environment that offers endless opportunities for those practitioners of what the philosopher Francis Bacon called "the purest of human joys".

The art of landscape gardening demonstrates more than almost any other activity the human need to create havens of peace and contemplation. Benignly fashioning nature, the landscape gardener responds to what is present, as well as importing dazzling exotic plants and trees to reveal an extraordinary new world of the senses. Provence then is a gardener's idyll - a place where the extremes of "wilderness" and the symmetry of geometric construction come together in some extraordinary designs.

These creations, building on the qualities of the area - light and a dry climate - do not divorce themselves from their surroundings but rather create the impression that indeed the whole of Provence is one magnificent garden. Whether employing the region's evergreens, its widespread shrubbery (for topiary), its lavender meadows, its plentiful herbs and spices, or its "desert" vegetation - cactus and the like - the soil's the limit and the imagination the only perimeter fence.

From the humid tropical to the unspoilt hills, from the cubist inspiration at Hyères to the Zen patterns of Erik Borja, and from the coast to the valleys, only in Provence can you say that you walk in gardens as varied as dreams, yet as sensual as life.

                    Book Description

From the bastides of Provence to the affluent gardens along the Riviera, this book unfolds an entirely new vista of garden designs, images, and experiences. The over 500 illustrations, including 375 in full color, depict a rich and fascinating area of France where gardens have been at the center of social life for centuries.

These are contrasting types of gardens - the provencal bastides dating from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries retain the geometrical character of Renaissance gardens, while the garden culture of the coastal enclaves softens lines and forms with recollections of romantic Italy and Victorian England, and exploits the possibilities of luxuriant trees and shrubs. Yet these opposite types are united by their various responses to the challenges of a shared cluster of microclimates.

Sections of the book that discuss the social, economic, and climatic conditions of the area are followed by detailed and illustrated entries on 50 individual gardens. Each is described along with its history, and both plants and features such as fountains, statuary, and pergolas are itemized. A plan of each garden, accompanied by numerous views, makes this section of fundamental importance to the history of French gardens and - since many late nineteenth and early twentieth century gardens on the Riviera were created by international designers like Ferdinand Bac and Harold Peto - to the literature of modern garden history.

Michel Racine is an architect for the Ministry of Housing. He and his coauthors Ernest Boursier-Mougenot and Francoise Binet are founding members of the Association for the Art of Landscapes and Gardens.

3 out of 5 stars Design Idea for Great American Homes: Additions.......2004-05-03

Beautiful book, beautiful photos, wonderful ideas IF you either have a two-story home or would like to add a second story addition to your one-story home. For me, however, the book served no particular purpose and was a great disappointment as my intent is to increase the size of our home by going outward, not upward.

5 out of 5 stars The Art of the Seamless Addition.......2003-10-25

As the owner of a small architectural practice that does many additions, I see this book as an excellent (and very affordable) sourcebook for residential additions. This book brings together twenty-five projects that have been featured in Fine Homebuilding magazine over the past five years. The additions range in scale form major complete home makeovers to small additions/remodelings such as adding a portico to a Georgian Colonial home. The projects are classified in terms of "Adding Up, Adding on the Side, Adding On, and Adding Out.

These projects are mostly what I term "Seamless" additions, meaning that the addition/makeover/remodeling is done in a manner to create a seamless (oftentimes altogether new) building. Most of the projects featured are architect designed and all display a fine level of craftsmanship and inginuity that one expects from Fine Homebuilding Magazine. It is interesting to compare this book with James Grayson Truelove's book "New American Additions and Remodelings". Truelove's book, which I also highly recommend, features more avante garde, object-like projects, many by noted young architects.

This is a paperback book and the articles are have been very nicely repackaged. Whether you are an architect, contractor, or homeowner, I highly recommend this book.

                      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good book, not a great one........2003-11-01

Typical of the books publisher by Taunton, this is a well produced work -- nicely arranged, good photos, and with about the right amount of verbiage for each house. My less than five star rating is because I personally didn't find most of the houses to be that interesting design-wise (you may, 'look inside'), and I also thought too many of the house were either too big (several in the 2300-2400 sq. ft. size, which I don't consider 'small') or too expensive due to site conditions, materials or whatever. It not too hard to build a nice small home if you've actually got the budget for a much larger, more traditional house. I enjoyed the book, it's just not one of my favorites. A side note, all of the houses have been featured in Fine Homebuilding Magazine previously.

                      3 out of 5 stars Third installment.......2003-08-12

This book continues the series and sticks to the established formula: articles featured in Fine Homebuilding and written by the homeowners. The houses themselves often follow a formula: nothing ordinary, or novelty for its own sake. There are many examples of extreme creativity unconstrained by common sense, but, then again, such things make for interesting reading. As long as *I* don't have to have a plywood floor in my house :-)

This version of the Good Life is remarkably consistent from article to article, and you may grow a little tired of people bragging about the features of their house that are "for entertaining". But, if you don't mind sorting the wheat from the chaff, there are also lots of attractive homes, offering an alternative to standard housing development fare.

The restaurant soon earned a reputation for simple but delicious home-style fare, prompting Criscuolo to write Claire's Corner Copia Cookbook, a compilation of the restaurant's 225 best recipes. Devotees of healthful vegetarian cooking that emphasizes whole grains, fresh produce, and seasonal specialties will welcome Criscuolo's book.

Providing dishes organized by courses and food or meal categories such as sandwiches and breakfast, Criscuolo's book also reflects her Italian heritage, with its penchant for rich, vegetable-laced soups and hearty pasta entrées. Dishes like My Mother-in-Law's Special Holiday Soup, replete with beans, cauliflower, broccoli, escarole, and spinach, and Baked Rigatoni with Amalfitan Sauce, a marinara sauce-based dish, are savory examples of Criscuolo's Italian-influenced fare. Other cultures are represented by dishes such as Mexican Stuffed Peppers, made with a corn and rice filling; Hummus and Tomato on Wheat Bread, a particularly flavorful sandwich; and Szechuan-Style Eggplant. Criscuolo's baked specialties, including Cheddar Scones, Corn-Walnut Muffins, and Pumpkin-Walnut Pie, are of particular interest. Though the quest for healthy dishes occasionally leads Criscuolo to offer recipes featuring food substitutes or dubious low-fat products, most of her cooking is honest and tempting and should find its way to the everyday tables of all food lovers. -- Arthur Boehm

5 out of 5 stars bread, soup, and cake.......2007-01-16

When I lived in New Haven, my favorite lunchtime place was Claire's Corner Copia. My favorite lunch was soup, a mini loaf of bread and carrot cake with butter cream frosting. The frosting was so popular, it was kept in a bucket, and the staff would scoop out a giant portion and slather it on the cake. I'm so glad I can make it from this cookbook now that I'm on the west coast and can't make my weekly trek to Claire's. And the soup! I never had a bad one--they were all great, and they're here, too. Get this book and also Claire's Italian Feast. If you can't get to the restaurant, these recipes are the next best thing.

This vegetarian cookbook is one of the best I've read and used yet. I've made several recipes and they are easy, fast, and delicious. Another thing I liked about this cookbook is that most of the ingredients you will have on hand or they are easily accessible at any grocery store. I recommend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding and Easy Recipes.......2003-10-13

I had been wanting to visit Cliare's for weveral years. Last summer, I finally ate there, and enjoyed every bite, especially the trifle dessert. Also on the trip, I purchased this cookbook, and absolutely love it. I'm critical of many books, but find this to be very well-written. Each chapter is preceded by personal information, recipes are easy to follow, ingredients easy to find, and the finished product is very delicious. A cookbook that I will use over and over again, unlike many others which are not as easy to work with. The cover is very colorful and enticing. I'm ordering one for a friend, and hoping for a return-visit to Claire's. I'm from New York City, and have lived in four states, and Claire's is one of the best retaurants in the U.S. ----Maure, in Illinois

5 out of 5 stars vegetarian food for meat-lovers.......1997-05-19

Visiting Claire's Corner Copia for lunch was always a treat when I was growing up in New Haven, so I was very excited when my mother gave me Claire's cookbook for Christmas 2 years ago. It did not disappoint. The recipes are delicious and easy to follow and many have an Italian flavor. I think the best recommendation I can give is that my meat-loving husband enjoys the meals I have prepared from this cookbook- his favorite is the Eggplant "Meatballs"- try them!
