So Disappointed!.......2002-07-29
The new book including Shanghai and Beijing is next to worthless. All of the shop recommendations for HK have been ommited. Some of my favorites from "Born to Shop Hong Kong", like Gemsland in the Mandarin Hotel, deserve to be mentioned as providing amazing service, great quality and reasonable prices to every visitor planning on coming to HK.
I purchased the book in preparation for an upcoming trip to Shanghai. With the exception of the overview of the markets, very little else was of use. There are almost no local shop (non-department store) recommendations and suggestions for totally random (and useless?) things like wedding photos. In fact it only gives shopping suggestions for 9 categories- and included in that 9 are things like Drugstores. How are you going to Shop til You Drop in a drugstore?
Additionally, the index is horrible. There is a whole paragraph on the Hoabao Building in the Yu Gardens, but good luck finding any reference to it in the index. This is just one example, there are many more.
I was so disappointed in this book. Entirely way too much time spent on travel logistics. Anyone going to China is not going to purchase this book as their sole resource guide. Leave the logistics to those who do it best, and spend more time on where to shop!
Of little value..........2001-09-18

Demokrit - Lachender Philosoph Und Sanguinischer Melancholiker: Eine Pseudohippokratische Geschichte (Mnemosyne, Bibliotheca Classica Batava Supplementum)
th Rutten , and Thomas Rutten Manufacturer: Brill Academic Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9004095233 |
Book Description
The theme of the book is the Hellenistic epistolary novel which describes a fictional meeting between Democritus and Hippocrates. The author traces the later history of this story as part of the legend of the laughing philosopher on the one hand and of the history of melancholy on the other and demonstrates the interdependence of all three traditions in text editions, translations, paraphrases, commentaries, verse and painting from ancient times through to the Renaissance. He shows how the Stoic-Cynical tradition of 'Philosophus ridens' and the medical concept of 'Typus melancholicus sanguinicus' come to amalgamate into the early modern Humanist literary and iconographical tradition of 'Democritus ridens melancholicus'. In so doing the author also shows the importance of this tradition to the subsequent interpretation of the epistolary novel and its influence on modern research into the Hippocratic corpus and melancholy. The work links important themes in the fields of ancient philosophy, ancient medicine, art history and Renaissance studies and will offer thought-provoking material to many of those working in these areas.

Knight Without Armor: Carlos Eduardo Castaneda, 1896-1958
Felix D. Almaraz Manufacturer: Texas A&M University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 089096890X |
Book Description
Knight without Armor is the definitive biography of one of the most substantial yet unknown historians of the twentieth century. No historian of Hispanic descent has matched Castaeda's success, with eighteen books and nearly fifty articles published in three decades. He was also one of the most distinguished historians of his time, having earned accolades such as knighthood in the Vatican's Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem and in Spain's Order of Isabel la Catlica for contributing to the study of Catholicism and the history of the Spanish borderlands in North America. In his rise to prominence, Castaeda had to overcome financial burdens and ethnic discrimination. Rising from humble origins in South Texas, he fought to improve school conditions in the barrios of San Antonio and Del Rio and served on Franklin D. Roosevelt's Committee on Fair Employment Practice during World War II. In 1939 he became a professor and historian at the University of Texas, where he taught Latin American and Catholic history. His seven-volume study, Our Catholic Heritage in Texas, 15191950, has been called the best work ever written on the Spanish colonial era in Texas.
Until his death in 1958, Castaeda educated others on the history and culture of Hispanic Americans and courageously sought equality for his people. Author Flix Almarz has drawn on writings, interviews, and photographs from private collections as well as extensive data from state and national archives in this worthy tribute to an important historian.
