Review of the 3rd Edition........2006-04-11

In my Guide to Dayhiking in Southern California I listed the Orange County Volume of Afoot and Afield as the best in the series. It still is in this new edition, but quite a bit has changed, both in format and layout and in hike selection over the previous two editions. In general, these changes are improvements, and enough has changed that you should buy the third edition even if you have the other two.

Most of the changes are along the Orange County coastline where Schad has added 8 new hikes. This is a big plus for coastal walkers and reflects a real commitment on the part of residents of Orange County to preserve their beautiful coastline. The other area receiving lots of additional coverage is the Santa Rosa Ecological Reserve. This place is an absolute hikers' mecca, especially in the spring when wildflowers abound. This edition triples the number of hikes found in previous editions.

In terms of layout, maps are a little clearer than previously and pages for each region of Orange County are tabbed. This will surely help in locating nice walks close by. Gone, however, are the little icons that made the Afoot and Afield guides so distinctive. I found these useful in trip planning and was sorry to see them go.

On the whole, this is an excellent guide for those seeking a wilderness experience in what has to be one of the most urbanized areas in the Western US. I've done over 1/3 of the hikes described and am looking forward to doing more. This is truly the best of Orange County and this book deserves extended sales.

One of the best.......2005-03-31

I got intrested in the book, while exploring the trails around OC. The book is a big benefit if you want to do a day hike. It gives excellent overview, directions and what to expect on the trail. It covers most of the trails around this area and gives sufficient advice if want to be more adventerous. Since I got the book, I have been covering atleast 2 hikes per month. Cannot wait till I 'finish' the book. Good luck and Happy hiking :) Highly recommended if you plan to stay in orange county, and love the beautiful sunshine, beaches and hills around here.

COMPRHENSIVE AND CONCISE.......2001-07-04

Everyone in Orange County should own this book. Shad explains all the details for a serious hiker to find the best trails and features in Orange County, together with technical information about the right USGS Maps, elevation gains and distances of the various hikes. But he does so with a simplicity that makes the novice, like most of us, instantly aware of which hikes would be most appealing. He even adds a simple ranking system to separate the truly challenging treks from the mere walks. If you want to hike in Orange County, this tells you everything you need to know. If you only want to find a small patch of green to stretch your legs, this is still the place.

This is a fine guide to the trails of the regional / state park system of Orange County, Ca.. Included are directions to the trailhead, descriptions of the parks, and a detailed discussion of each trail ( distance, elevation gain and loss, highlights, etc.) This book has many fine photos and provides an alternative to Orange County hikers tired of making long drives to the mountains or deserts.

If you want to learn about interesting day hikes in Orange County this is the book for you. There is a map for each area with several hikes per map. For each hike described there is a time,distance and dificulty rating. Descriptions of each hike are good.

A little help for Dopey.......2001-08-15

As a rookie artist, I was able to produce a reasonable image of Dopey using this book. However, since then, I've used several other "how to draw" Disney books that have offered a much higher level of support to someone like me. This book is excellent for someone who's a little more familiar with drawing techniques. My favorite feature was the separate sections for each dwarfs facial features and then a page for full-body dwarf drawings!

Excellent writing, very good book!.......2007-08-28

First, a little background on my experience with pugs: My husband and I have owned (or rather, been owned) by pugs for more than 15 years now. All of our pugs have been from Pug Rescue, and so came to us with various physical problems and emotional baggage. The emotional issues are easily handled in pugs with affection, discipline and exercise (see:Cesar Milan). Plus, all pugs really want to do is love and be loved, so once you have met that need, they become much more emotionally stable no matter what they have been through.
Physically, however, pugs are prone to all sorts of troubles, many not so easily remedied. Here is a brief list of what we have run into: luxating patellas, dry eye, stenotic nares, nosefold and ear infections, bladder infections, food and skin allergies, immune-mediated polyarthritis, abraded corneas, interdigital cysts; the list goes on.
For people considering buying a pug, you should know that even pug puppies from "good" breeders can have these issues. A couple of our rescue pugs have been from "backyard breeders," people who just breed pugs without really knowing what they are doing. But one of our pugs came from a stellar breeder in L.A. who charges $1200 per puppy (don't ask how this pug came into rescue -- it's a long story) and that pup had serious medical issues too.

All this by way of saying, a pug is a major investment. You may get one that is super healthy, but you may not. Phil Maggitti's book is an extremely helpful "first-glance" book for both people who are considering getting a pug and those who already have one or more. That is, the book is a wonderful introduction to the many aspects of pug ownership. Maggitti does discuss the medical issues but he also does a fantastic job explaining the pug personality, which is not easy to capture! He is a very good writer, and there were times when I found myself laughing out loud at some of his stories, and nodding in agreement at other times. And all this in such a slim volume! This is a gem of a book that no pug person should be without.

One more thing: if you are considering purchasing a pug, you should know that they SHED. They shed TONS, a fact that many breed books will not share with you. Not only do they shed, but their fur (especially the fawns) is barbed, so it sticks onto clothing and upholstery with remarkable tenacity. We have killed lots of vacuums in our quest to subdue the pug hair, but it continues to overwhelm us on a regular basis. I mention this only because a good number of pugs are turned in to rescue because the owner claims "I didn't know they shed so much. I thought shorthaired dogs didn't shed!" Not so. Trust me! If you can get past the tumbleweeds of fuzz, though, pugs really are the best, sweetest, funniest, most loveable dogs you could ever hope to share your life with. We adore them, and so does Phil Maggitti!

the book is great and I really feel it has alot of information on how to train pugs... I will be a first time dog owner when I finally get a pug and I feel I have learned alot about dogs and how to handle the situations that pugs can get themselves into without hurting the dogs progress in training or their feelings!!

Maybe I was hoping for too much? But I didn't find it particularly in depth. I still had lots of grooming, health and vaccination questions.

On the other hand...this isn't a generic dog health/training book. And the author has several pugs and knows the breed's quirks.

It's the most entertaining dog breed book I've ever read, but not the most informative.

If you're thinking about a pug, buy this book. I have a puppy, and I warn you, they are a handful. Play, play, chew, chew, eat, sleep. And play some more. Then some more. They're naturally clownish, which makes up for their underpowered brains. They're also slow to train because of that lack of brains. Personally, I think that anyone who's going to get a pug should get two, so they can keep each other company. Funniest dogs in the world and they'll make you laugh all the time, but if you want something you won't have to pay attention to, get a cat.

Great book! Very practical information about what pugs need as far as bathing, skin fold wiping (beware of swamp face), and other general pug hygiene. Very practical training tips, such as belly rubbing to assure your pug that you are dominant (as well as providing a delightful belly rub) and choosing useful words for training, such as "off" instead of "no jumping," so that that your pug can be praised with the same word, for example, "Good Off," which then serves as a built-in reward (and doesn't exhaust the word "No"). Interesting and funny information on pug personalities. What's not to love about a pug?

We thought that this book was great. It has really helped us since we became new pug owners. It explained about health concerns and potty training, to what kind of toys pugs like the best. I would highly reccommend this book to anyone thinking about getting a pug!

With his figures, Italian sculptor Medardo Rosso succeeded in contributing decisively to the development of modern sculpture. The artist's points of focus were the moment when the sculpture was perceived and the fusion of the figure with its surroundings. He worked almost exclusively on portrait heads; wax became a substitute for bronze, allowing him to work the surface of the sculpture to its finest perfection and to use different hues, adequate expression for the fleetingness of the apparition. And they are fleeting--one hardly knows if the portrayed faces are receding from the sculpture's surface or pushing up against it. In Paris, where Rosso spent the greater part of his life, he found understanding friends in Edgar Degas and the collector Henri Rouart, while friendship with Rodin miscarried because of the rivalry between the two sculptors. At around the turn of the century, Rosso's sculptures could be seen at many large European exhibitions; the Futurists would soon hold him up as a model. This publication, a scholarly survey of the artist's work, makes clear that although Rosso limited himself to very few motifs, their many different versions translated into independent works.

Rosso Re-examined.......2003-11-07

Sharon Hecker and Harry Cooper provide excellent insight into an extremely important, under-appreciated artist and his technique. Hilton Kramer describes Hecker's treatment of Rosso as the most thoughtful account of Rosso ever written. (see Hilton Kramer, "Sculptor Rosso Coated Work in Wax as Performance Art," New York Observer (August 18, 2003))

There is no question that Rosso made his own waxes and bronzes. Hecker's essay deals mainly with Rosso as the founder of his sculptures. It should also be mentioned that this exhibition does not intend to deceive the viewer by including posthumous casts as some have claimed. Hecker devotes more than two pages of her essay to this issue (pp. 60-62). Rosso authorized the posthumous reproduction of some of his works, and Hecker convincingly shows that these pieces are, in fact, part of "the sculptor's legacy and intention." (p. 62) Including them in the exhibition gives the viewer another dimension of Rosso's work and technique to consider.

Finally, Hecker does not deny that Rosso was interested in the dematerialization of the subject. Her particularly thoughtful treatment of Rosso's interests attempts to reconcile his need to dematerialize his sculpture and his profound interest and attention to the physical material of his sculpture.

The Open Case of Medardo Rosso.......2003-10-26

While this exhibition and publication include some superb examples of casts made by the artist, it is full of casts NOT made by the artist. A very confusing presentation which sets Rosso scholarship back 25 years.

If you want to know Rosso as demonstated by his own hand from the standpoint of connoisseurship, pass this publication by. I can recommend to you the following publications as superior references:

It needs to be stated that Rosso not only made his own waxes (with multiple and changing variations), but he also made his own bronzes in his studio experimenting with process and alchemy. Whatever material, Rosso did not make editions, but rather variations as was the later case with Brancusi. Prior to artists such as Marini, I believe Rosso was the first to never conceal the casting process with chasing and lacquer, but rather leave the firescale and residue as an integral aspect of the "impression" of the piece. Further, most of the works were created to be shown with light from one vantage point as demonstrated by the photography he made during the last 20 years of his life. Rosso was concerned with how to dematerialize the subject. He was concerned with light and environment.
