The Best Guide To New Orleans EVER!.......2004-05-20
If you are like me, wondering who designed that building, who invented that recipe, and why a street name is pronounced a certain way- this book is for you. You will find everything you need to plan an enjoyable vacation, but most of all you will find the history of the city and answers to all of the questions you will encounter. Never has there been a better guide to New Orleans!
Customer Reviews:
Great guide but out of date.......2005-05-21
I wanted to tour Cajun country, so this seemed like the perfect guide. And it was really great, but it's very out of date, which made things a little hard. None of the phone numbers seemed to be right, and even the route or highway numbers had often changed. Still, most of the places and tours guides were still around- you just had to do a little digging with the local tourist office or on the web to get the right phone numbers. I'd also recommend getting a road atlas of Louisiana.
this guide's got the goods for music and dance hounds.......2004-09-16
This book is a great guide to a significant number of the thriving hot spots for cajun and zydeco music and dance. Though that was my main interest, I also found myself visiting sugar plantions and found an excellent bayou tour and great places to stay and eat that are still very local in cultural feel as opposed to the more tourist oriented culture of New Orleans. I skimmed through 3 other guides tossed them aside and then kept this book at hand constantly while driving around the bayou country. I've been two years in a row to lafayette area and am going back again, and I still will have this guide close at hand as I plan and travel in cajun country.
Great resource.......2002-10-11
Spent several weeks in Cajun Country last winter with this book as our guide. Found a LOT of wonderful, out of the way places and experiences that we never would have known about otherwise. My New Orleans "born and raised" friends didn't even know about many of them. This is a wonderful area to visit -- we camped, but ate most of our meals out to really get the "local flavor" (I'm getting hungry just remembering). This book does a good job of describing all the local foods, too.
Good directions to all the "little places" and good descriptions of what you'll find there. If you go to any of the dances (and you should!), be sure to call ahead and find out what the current start time is. In the Christmas season, try to catch one of the many "boat parades" on the bayous -- they're not listed in the book, but just ask around and people will tell you when and where.
Well-written, quirky, and useful.......2001-03-28
This well-written book was invaluable for our family's week in Bayou country. It has a dry humor ("on the Bayou, land is a recent occurrence..."). It covers geography, history, culture, and then gets into where to stay, where to eat, where to dance, what to see, and what to do. It's pretty up front (about one town -- "don't get hungry here...").
Everything we tried that was recommended in the book was great fun. One of the eateries was not so much wonderful as wonderfully different, but we were glad we went just as well.
Some of the details are a little out of date, but I think that's due to their specificity. If you say that a tiny bakery makes sweet potato pies between 11-3 on Thursdays, but the one owner-baker decides to change to Wednesdays, there's not much to be done about that. Even so, that only happened once in the entire week.
We had this book and the Delorme LA map, and that was a perfect set of resources for us. We had a great time, and I'm confident it was due to this book in particular.
Highly recommended.
The best of the 5 guidebooks we used.......2000-07-08
We used several guidebooks to plan a long weekend in southern Louisiana in connection with a family wedding in Lafayette. This was the most useful of the books.
The author gives a star to especially noteworthy attractions, hotels, and restaurants. We went by these stars to plan our trip and had a great time. Even our new Cajun cousins-in-law were impressed with the selections we made.
A close second as a guidebook was "Louisiana Dayride - 52 Short Trips from New Orleans" by Shelley Holl.
Two final notes: Neither guidebook covers the city of New Orleans itself; and every guidebook we read had the wrong area codes for many telephone numbers (Louisiana has 2 brand-new area codes -- 225 and 337)

Arshile Gorky (Modern Masters Series, Vol. 8)
ASIN: 0874271355 |
Book Description
Arshile Gorky (1904-1948) was a seminal figure in the Abstract Expressionist movement. His drawings are beautiful, complex, and sensual creations, the products of a technical mastery that bespoke a new power of abstraction within modern art. They are also pivotal to the understanding of his art and play a major part in the development and realization of his paintings. This handsome volume, and the exhibition it accompanies-the first retrospective ever assembled of this influential artist's drawings-focus on how Gorky's drawings function both in relation to his paintings and as individual works of art.
Gorky's changing styles and precise approach to drawing are discussed in detail, and contrasted with the spontaneous and direct execution generally associated with Abstract Expressionism. The works range from small, intimate drawings to major, large-scale pieces; all are reproduced in superb full color. These rich and evocative drawings are an inspiration to new generations of artists and art lovers alike.
Customer Reviews:
The New Chihuahua.......2007-04-04
The New Chihuahua is a "must read" for the new Chihuahua owner.
Informative Book.......2006-10-24
I bought this book along with two other Chihuahua books. This would be my second pick for a Chihuahua book. It has the basics you need as new owner of a Chihuahua. The book has helpful information on raising, grooming and training a Chihuahua but focuses mainly on showing and breeding them. For someone who wants them as pet with more detail and more up to date information I recommend getting "Chihuahuas, a Complete Pet Owner's Manual" by D. Caroline Coile Ph.D.
Well Worth the Price!.......2006-04-17
For the photos alone of some of the best lines of dogs out there this book is worth the price. If you have a chi from good AKC champions lines, and you study the pedigree back 10+ generations chances are that you can find photos of your dogs relatives in this book!!
Know the dog that is the short haired fawn and white dog illustration on the AKC webiste? His name is Ch. Holiday Gold Jubilee and his photo is on page 27!
The chapter on the interpretation of the breed standard is great! The illustrations clearly show the desired traits so you can compare your pooch feature by feature. There is also a section that compares the long coat standard to the papillion standard feature by feature with one head illustration.
Great chapters on breeding and showing. A book I feel that every chi owner/breeder/handler should have in their reference section!
I breed Chihuahuas and this is THE book to have!.......1998-08-02
If you are thinking about buying a chihuahua this book is a MUST read before you buy your dog. The author is well known in breeding and show circles. She explains what to look for before you buy your dog. Chihuahua owners will find it is worth buying even if they own other books. The breeding and whelping chapter has tons of useful information for breeders. The only down side to this book is that the photos are all black and white, however there are alot of nice photos! This is not just another generic dog book where they stick a breed name on the cover. Make sure you read the chapter "What every Chihuahua owner should know"! It has health and care information specific to the chihuahua. This book costs alittle more than some other books but it is worth every penny!
A very good breed standard..........1998-05-12
Ms. Terry continues her Chihuahua journey from "The Chihuahua" to this more detailed tome. I, as a handler, breeder and show person in several breeds really like this book. It gives some of the basics a beginner would need, but also take us further into this tiny body and lets us see that, just because they weigh in at 3-4+- pounds there is still a LOT of dog there. Worth the purchace and I highly recomend it.

Book Description
James Josiah Webb left Independence, Missouri, in the summer of 1844 and headed down the Santa Fe Trail with goods bought in St. Louis. Although his first venture as a trader was a failure, he eventually made a fortune as a merchant in Santa Fe. Webb recorded his youthful experiences in 1888, and Ralph P. Bieber, a respected scholar and researcher on western expansion, edited and annotated his journal for publication more than forty years later. Long out of print, Adventures in the Santa Fe Trade is an entertaining and important source of first-hand information about the Santa Fe Trail and trade; trappers, Mexicans, and Indian tribes of the Old Southwest; and the impact of the Mexican War on southwestern trade.
Customer Reviews:
Life on the Santa Fe Trail.......2006-02-02
In January 1888, a few months shy of his 70th birthday, James Josiah Webb sat down in his Connecticut home and began writing his memoirs of his days as a Santa Fe trader, which had consumed 17 years of his life from 1844 to 1861. Unfortunately, a year later, after writing about only the first three years of that experience, Webb died. Although unfinished, this is Webb's manuscript as it lay in his desk the day he died.
After settling in St. Louis from his family's home in Connecticut, Webb became interested in the trade caravans that took goods between Independence, MO, and Santa Fe (and other points in Mexico). In 1844 he made his first trading expedition; although it wasn't a huge success, he returned to St. Louis and, with a partner, planned another trip. This second venture the following year was a big success. But the war with Mexico threw a monkey wrench into things, and on his third trip the partners decided to bring their goods beyond Santa Fe to near Mexico City. They were arrested in Chihuahua, where they remained prisoners for a month, and when finally released, proceeded on to San Juan de los Lagos, where they sold their goods. His account ends with their return to St. Louis.
Webb must have had a phenomenal memory because his narrative is packed with anecdotes and encounters with other traders and trail travelers that seem fresh and complete. He apparently kept all his account books and business records for all his years spent in the trade, but there is no mention of him keeping journals. His style is breezy and informal, and the book hasn't been "doctored" in any way by the editor (except for spelling and grammar corrections). The editor, Ralph Bieber, has done an excellent job (in footnotes) in identifying geographical features mentioned and expanding on various people encountered by Webb. The only criticism I have is the book is lacking an index, which would be useful. It's a fascinating first-hand account of life on the Santa Fe Trail (and Mexico). Webb's manuscript ran some 250 pages yet covered only three years; one can only imagine had he lived longer to complete his memoirs how many volumes they would comprise. If the rest were only half as interesting and informative as this volume, they would still be worth looking into.
Informative.......2002-04-30
James Josiah Webb was a young enterprising man in his twenties who made several trips down the Santa Fe and Chihuahua Trails in the 1840's and this is his account of what life was like then. While not exactly filled with tales of high adventure or edge of your seat drama, it is a good character study of relationships between Americans, Mexicans and Native Americans. The chapters on his 1846 trading venture during war time Mexico are very insightful and gives the reader a feeling for what it must have been like going through those tense and turbulent times of political unrest. A good book.
Book Description
In 1598 the conquistador Juan de Oñate led the first permanent European settlers to what would become the United States, traveling from Mexico along El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, the Royal Road of the Interior. In commemoration of the 400th anniversary of this arduous journey, the husband-and-wife author/photographer team of Douglas and Christine Preston, seasoned travelers on the Camino Real, invite us to join them as they journey by car and horseback and on foot along this ancient road, which began thousands of years ago as a series of Indian trails. Christine Preston's photos show wild places that have hardly changed over the centuries as well as churches, ruins, villages, and modern cityscapes. Douglas Preston's text chronicles the history of the road and its travelers. José Antonio Esquibel provides fascinating historical information on the pioneer settlers of New Mexico including the origins and genealogies of old New Mexico families from Abeyta to Zamora.
An exploration, in stunning photography and text, of the 400-year-old Spanish trail known as El Camino Real, blazed by Juan de Oñate in 1598.

Low quality book.......2005-12-26
Everything about this book is done to a low standard: the pictures, the editing, the information, and the presentation.
First Time Chihuahua Owner Appreciates This Book.......2005-10-07
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It gives a well-rounded presentation of what every owner or potential owner of a chihuahua should know. It is easy to read and is peppered with many entertaining photos. I read it just prior to bringing home our first chihuahua and periodically check it as a reference tool.
If you want to become a chihuahua owner, I highly recommend this book.
From the author of "I'm Living Your Dream Life," and "The Things I Wish I'd Said," McKenna Publishing Group.
How did this book ever get published?!?!.......2005-06-01
This book should have never been published. There are grammatical errors through out this whole book, it is terrible. I am going to assume they had no copywriters proof it. The information is so broad also, if you want to learn about chihuahua's I would recommend surfing the internet or getting in touch with the AKC. Marion Mondshine should be appalled, that this book was done so badly. It is so thin and so basic. BLAH!!!!
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.......2005-05-01
This book contains very simplistic advice that is better acquired through discriminating web surfing. The writing is very poor and there are also tons of misspellings (often comical). The author is also overly obsessed with the 'best dog' in the litter and believes only in breeding. There is no advice for anyone who has adopted an older chihuahua, and even if you have a new puppy, i higly recommend, strongly advocate another book.
A wonderful source for information.......2003-12-24
I have just finished reading this book and found it very educational as well as informative in regards to the care of Chihuahua's. As new chihuahua owners we are always looking for information that will help us be better pet owners. This book offers everything from general care to breed standard and training issues. I would highly recommend it as it was written for regular people to understand. It was a quick read but very indepth.

Book Description
Bernie Rhodenbarr is actually trying to earn an honest living. It's been an entire year since he's entered anyone's abode illegally to help himself to their valuables. But now an unscrupulous landlord's threat to increase Bernie's rent by 1,000% is driving the bookseller and reformed burglar back to a life of crime -- though, in all fairness, it's a very short trip. And when the cops wrongly accuse him of stealing a priceless collection of baseball cards, Bernie's stuck with a worthless alibi since he was busy burgling a different apartment at the time . . . one that happened to contain a dead body locked inside a bathroom.
So Bernie has a dilemma. He can trade a burglary charge for a murder rap. Or he can shuffle all the cards himself and try to find the joker in the deck -- someone, perhaps, who believes that homicide is the real Great American Pastime.

Fast, fun, and breezy.......2006-09-13
You'd think Bernie Rhodenbarr would know better than to stop for mysterious, attractive young ladies who ask him to perform random burglaries, but that may just be his cross to bear. The Burglar Who Traded Ted Williams is deeply enjoyable and endlessly amusing, a hugely pleasant read. Highly recommended.
Everyone knows everyone.......2005-01-30
Block ranks right up there with other writers who just know how to write (others include Ed McBain and Donald Westlake) . Dialogue and the ability to keep us needing to turn the page are the hallmarks of all of Block's works. Block sets up impossible to figure situations and manages to sort it all out. Be prepared for everything that happens to be somehow interconnected, I don't know how he does it. As Block puts it, "Coincidences are God's way of letting us know He is up there." Warning: try to read in no more than three sittings, you'll never keep it all straight.
The mystery is as addictive as Bernie's burgling.......2004-12-15
Not since Bilbo Baggins has a burglar been this engaging...how do you help the police solve a murder when you were at the scene of the crime committing larceny? And then you tried to trade the frozen Ted Williams. Just kidding. Remember when baseball cards came with bubblegum and mustard? Ah, the joys of Americana. Ah, the fun of a Lawrence Block mystery. A burglar with a bookstore? Hey since authors feel books rob them blind sometimes...speaking of authors, there's an interesting bit going through with Bernie Rhodenbarr's lesbian dog-groomer pal/sleuth Carolyn who thinks that Kinsey Millhone (Su Grafton's brainchild) is a lesbian. And there's a classy hint of lesbian romance in the air with the wife of one of the characters Bernie tangles with. Carolyn remarks, "I figure he'll be an easy act to follow." Block, however, isn't.
My favorite of the serise.......2004-04-08
Take a sarcastic on agian off agian burgler and add one lesoban dog gromer. For good measure also add a halfway honest cop and a cat named Raffels. What you get is a really fun serise of mystery books that will always hold a special place in your heart.
in this particular edition of the serise berny Rosenbar is doing all he can to resist the temtation of breaking and entering. When a new landlord rasies the price of the rent he really doesn't have a chocie, he wants to remian honest but he also wants to keep his store.
What you end up getting in the end is a great book with hilarious charecters. I recommend to all.
Bernie Burgles Again . . . and Again . . . and Again!.......2003-05-21
Lawrence Block is one of our most talented mystery authors. In the Bernie Rhodenbarr series he explores how an ordinary, but intelligent, "honest" person might go about pursuing a life of crime as a fastidious and talented burglar who isn't proud of what he does, doesn't like to hang out with criminals, and really gets a big thrill out of breaking and entering . . . and removing valuables. As you can see, there's a sitcom set-up to provide lots of humor. But the humor works well in part because Mr. Block is able to put the reader in the Bernie's shoes while he breaks, enters and steals . . . and evades the long arm of the law. To balance the "honest" burglar is an array of "dishonest" and equally easy-money loving cops. As a result, you're in a funny moral never-never land while your stomach tightens and your arm muscles twitch as tension builds. To make matters even more topsy-turvy, Bernie at some point in every story turns into an investigator who must figure out "who-dun-it" for some crime that he personally didn't do. It's almost like one of those "mystery at home" games where the victim comes back as the police investigator, playing two roles. Very nice!
So much for explaining the concept of the series. The Burglar Who Traded Ted Williams is the sixth book in the series. I strongly suggest that you begin the series by reading Burglars Can't Be Choosers and follow it up with The Burglar in the Closet, The Burglar Who Studied Spinoza, The Burglar Who Liked to Quote Kipling, and The Burglar Who Painted Like Mondrian. Each story in the series adds information and characters in a way that will reduce your pleasure of the others if read out of order. Although, I originally read them out of order and liked them well enough. I'm rereading them now in order, and like it much better this way. The Burglar Who Thought He Was Bogart comes next in the series.
As this book opens, Bernie has been going straight . . . for almost a year. Barnegat Books, a used hard cover book store he owns and operates, has been providing his living rather than burglary. Then, he receives a double shock. His new landlord is Bordon Stoppelgard, and with his 30 year lease at an end, Mr. Stoppelgard announces that the new lease will be for $10,500 a month rather than $875. How can Bernie afford that? He can't. Then, Stoppelgard comes into Barnegat Books to buy a first edition of Sue Grafton's "B" Is for Burglar for $80 plus tax. Bernie tries to refuse him the sale, but Stoppelgard insists, slapping a hundred-dollar bill on the counter. Then he laughs at Bernie for selling a five-hundred-dollar book for so little.
But Bernie's sorely tempted to burgle again . . . both for the money and the thrills he gets from burglary. That temptation is particularly great just now because Bernie knows that the wealthy Martin Gilmartins will be out for the evening. Bernie does his best to avoid temptation . . . and succeeds. His only slip is to call Mr. Gilmartin from Carolyn Kaiser's apartment to ask him how he liked the show . . . a call that can be traced by the police when Mr. Gilmartin discovers a burglary has been committed and valuable baseball cards are missing. Bernie's alibi isn't very good because he decides to go out after leaving Carolyn. Someone might think he was visiting a fence to sell the baseball cards. What to do?
Most people will find The Burglar Who Traded Ted Williams to be the very best book in the series. The plot is deliciously complicated and unusual. There are mysteries galore to solve, and it's not clear until near the end who did what to whom. The satirical references to mystery novels and novelists are priceless (these include wickedly twisted misstatements of Sue Grafton titles and stories, and a hilarious sequence about cats solving mysteries referring to the Lillian Jackson Braun books). The book also introduces Raffles, Bernie's new mouse-exterminating-assistant cat who is always on the paper chase, and Carolyn's offbeat theories about women and cats. The baseball card trivia about the Chalmers Mustard Ted Williams set will delight any collector or fan. The comic sequences had me laughing out loud as Bernie finds unexpected surprises as he employs his burglary talents. Bernie also discovers a new source of income which most readers would not have anticipated. Some of the new characters will also amuse or delight you, even though they are only in this book. In essence, there's enough good material in this book for four excellent novels. And it's all nicely pulled together.
How will Bernie save the store? Who took the baseball cards? How will Bernie solve the other puzzles in the book? You are making a big mistake if you don't read this book!
The theme of this book is whether honesty or dishonesty pays better . . . and why. Where do you see dishonest people doing better than honest ones now? Will that continue? Why or why not?

Bernie's rent has gone up, way up. There is only one way to meet the rent, but the burglary goes wrong.
Customer Reviews:
Extremely Involved Plot.......2007-03-25
While Lawrence Block has never shrunk from complexity, this story takes the cake.
Lawrence wants to be able to solve a "murder in a room locked from the inside" mystery and does so here. But there's more than just the mechanics in play. In this story, he also creates extraordinarily complex relationships and interrelationships for us, and uses Bernie to unravel each of these many complexities with some really tortured machinations.
Don't you just love it? I did...

Very funny and makes its point without being preachy.......1998-03-01
I thought my kids would never stop laughing! After we had read it, all I had to do in similar situations was remind them of Bernie - and they would laugh and relax about whatever they were losing their temper over. Definitely a good buy.
