Beautiful Photography in Grand Canyon Wildflowers book.......2006-04-30
Like most wildflower books that are not tools for keying out species, content is arranged by flower color. Unlike most, the images in this book are taken with sensitivity and grace. It's worth purchasing for the photos alone, which afford easy identification of the flowers as well as a pleasing aesthetic.

Book Description
Smaller in trim size, greatly expanded in content, this compendium of Chronicle’s classic Blue Note books (50,000 copies sold) is now an appealingly chunky paperback. Blue Note remains one of the most influential jazz labels of all time, and its cover art is a virtual time-capsule of cool. Now comprehensive, Blue Note: Album Cover Art gathers nearly 400 of the legendary covers, spanning the ’40s to the ’70s, and features the greatest work of legendary Blue Note art director Reid Miles. Simple and sophisticated, moody and alluring, these covers continue to influence designers and excite jazz aficionados today. "One glance," as Esquire said of the original edition, "and you’ll know where the essence of cool remains."

Classic.......2004-06-21
Blue Note Records not only released Classic Albums but also had Classic Album Covers that covered so much more.the Book displays the many images&stylings.if you get a chance watch the special on Blue Note Records which goes into full depth about the Music,Artists,Owners of the Label&those Classic album covers. enjoy.
excellent book; makes a great guide to blue note records.......2003-11-07
This compact book gives examples of some of the greatest album covers, to some of the finest albums, and now cds, issued by the label. It also makes a great guide for albums to check out, to see if they are still in print; which many of them are. Even for the out of print ones, it provides a nice collection for information purposes, and is reasonably priced. I look forward to finding and buying volume 2.
Compact size - great content.......2003-01-15
I have the two other editions of the Blue Note album covers (the ones that are the size of an album) and I love to look at them. The only problem is that they are a little too big to sit and flip through. The size of this book- "Blue Note: Album Cover Art" is perfect for flipping through. It looks small but packs a wonderful punch. I couldn't believe how many album covers were in this book. This book fits nicely on a coffee table or end table. If you are like me, you'll find yourself looking at it daily - in amazement of the style and class that embodies the Blue Note image.
Book Description
Music lovers have been attracted to the distinct style and sleek sound of jazz since its birth at the turn of the century. The album covers collected in this comprehensive volume under the well-known Blue Note record label embody classic design and pioneering typography. Two hundred color photographs of the album sleeves, an informative history of the Blue Note record company, and a portrait of Reid Miles, who designed nearly 500 album covers, capture the integrity of this distinctive record label. Sophisticated jazz connoisseurs and young listeners alike, as well as those with an interest in style and graphic design, will enjoy this exciting book of jazz memorabilia.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful, but the binding is lousy.......2002-01-31
...the contents are great but after a month the binding has already come apart. The individual pages are bound together seperately, but the cover and spine has seperated from them. Otherwise, I would give this 5 stars. Great reproductions, the colors are fantastic. This makes a great coffee table book.
The Originals.......2001-07-16
It's funny how history repeats itself. As one flips through this well published book. You can see where several artist (mostly hip hop) got their album cover ideas from. The photography (artist name escapes me now) is brillient! These covers legendary and why Blue Note has always set the standard of classic album covers. If you love jazz this is a must have.
A MUST for the BLUE NOTE fan !!.......2001-04-29
Great cover photos for most of the interesting Blue Note LPs.The covers are of the original lp's but sometimes of later releases: Page 10: "Sonny Rollins / A night in the village vanguard" has later "liberty" cover Page 22: Bud Powell 2 lps down the page have later covers.
This is a little problem.
All in all a great fun for the jazz Blue Note fan !!!!
Classic inovating design.......2000-08-18
Found the book great stimulation for page layout design and for revisiting a classic look. Great use of colors. Quite simplistic.
Blue Note: Best Jazz & Best Jazz Album Covers.......2000-08-12
Poor your favorite beverage; play your favorite jazz album; then sit down and enjoy this wonderful collection. If jazz were a book, this would be it! The artwork is stunning and the layout is exceptional. The covers tell a history of jazz that words cannot convey, a story of innovation, rhythm, and of music that comes from the heart.

There are TWO "first" books! (IGNORE RATING).......2004-02-11
My Amazon.com search found two titles of the "first" book, by almost identical names. They not only have a different numbers of pages but also have different Copyright dates! They do, however, have the same author!
One is
Blue Note: Album Cover Art.
127-128 pages. ?1991.
Another is
Blue Note: The Album Cover Art.
288 pages. ?2002.
This should help when making comparisons.
(The Amazon.com submission page would not allow me to not rate this book. But I wanted to include this important information for the buyer. Please ignore my rating since, as of this writing, I have not seen this book.)
Regards,
Stephen DeVore, Seattle, WA / Kirkland, WA (Washington), USA.

Average follow-up to stellar first book.......2000-08-12
The second book has three main problems: 1) The cover art is not nearly as original and creative as the art in the first book.
2) The jazz albums are not as prominent or important as the albums in the first book; therefore, this book is not as historically important as the first.
3) The books are two different sizes; they should line up side-by-side on the bookshelf or look like they were designed as a 2-volume set on your coffee table.
Buy the first book, but I recommend you just check this one out from the library.
Second only by title........2000-04-19
This edition of Blue Note album covers rests so well along with the first edition of this series. This book is great because it features a lot of really obscure Blue Note album covers and some more popular ones. This book really makes you miss vinyl albums. A must have.
Later printings of this book are the same size as Volume I - this wasn't the case before - It was shaped different and I only gave it 4 stars - The publisher fixed the problem and it is now a 5 star gem!
Book Description
From two noted experts-the first in-depth book on teaching your bird to talk
Teaching a bird to talk isn't as difficult as it may seem. In this easy-to-follow guide, avian experts Diane Grindol and Tom Roudybush reveal how you can communicate with your parrot far beyond "hello" and, in turn, understand what your bird is trying to communicate to you.
Teaching Your Bird to Talk compiles an impressive amount of background, training, and research regarding bird vocalizations, walking you step by step through the behavioral mechanics of training parrots to talk (as well as starlings, mynahs, and other birds). Whether you want your bird to mimic words, talk on cue, or have some understanding of what you are saying, this guide shows you the type of training you need to do with your bird. The book also takes a close look at the work of Dr. Irene Pepperberg-the world's foremost authority in the field of parrot intelligence and trainer of Alex the African Grey Parrot.
- Identifies which species of bird are likely to talk and which aren't
- Explores field research on regional languages and dialects of parrots in the wild
- Features true stories from owners of talking birds
- Explains how to handle problems with vocal parrots, such as screaming and using inappropriate language
- Offers tips on feeding and housing birds, and finding an avian veterinarian

Teaching Your Bird to Talk review.......2007-07-28
I am not quite finished with this book yet, but I am very pleased with the information and how it is presented in this book. I have read several other books on Parrots and this is by far the best one. There is more information than just teaching your bird to talk.
I highly recomment this book to anyone who owns a parrot with the potential to talk!
My parrot started to talk !.......2006-11-17
I waited more than six months after I bought this book to try the techniques inside it before I wrote my review. Although I was using some methods mentioned inside the book but this book encouraged me to keep using them and also adds some amazing methods and ideas that were very helpful, useful and easy to imply. Simply, my old African Grey Parrot started to talk, and that was my fist experience in such thing and I really feel grateful to this book and to the efforts inside it. I am giving four stars since I feel some information are ideas need proves rather than facts. However, aiming to make your African talk, buy this book and be patient.
Very good........2006-11-05
A wonderful reference and book guide for teaching a Quaker Parrot to talk.
Teaching Your Bird to Talk.......2006-02-27
When I bought this book I thought I was buying a book that would help me teach my parrot to talk. Although I do know that there are no guarantees about which bird will talk and what method works, I wanted tips and advice on how to help my parrot learn.
This books gives no such information. It covers why parrots talk, which parrots talk and lots of stories about talking parrots, but no real information on teaching my bird to talk. The only chapter I liked was the one about the Model/Rival-method, which is a detailed chapter on teaching a parrot to talk with cognition, understanding the words it uses. However, the bird must alredy be talking for this method to work.
What I wanted was an answer to these questions: Do constant, out of context, repetitions work? Does plaing a casette work? Would it help to have talking sessions? Does my tone of voice matter? How can I get my bird to talk more clearly? How can I get my bird to talk in front of strangers?
This book has good basic information for the beginner in bird care or ownership as well as advanced information........2005-08-14
Two authors have teamed up to write this book titled Teaching Your Bird to Talk. The two of them have plenty of experience with birds.
The first chapter is a "must read" for someone just thinking about bringing a bird into the family. All to often, the idea of having a pet that can talk to you, overshadows the time and commitment required to look after this pet.
To help us understand a little about talking, they give information about how and why birds make sounds. Birds that make sounds all year round instead of just at breeding times may be possible good talkers.
If a talking bird is what you are looking for, the chapter Who Talks and Who Doesn't will be of interest to you. It is also expained that not every bird in the talking list will talk, but they have the potential to talk. The birds that talk clearly are identified as well as the birds that simply do not talk. Although parrots are the most common talking birds, there is also a list of non-parrot birds that are known for talking ability.
The chapter Parrots Jump Into The Conversation contains input from several people who wrote in about conversations with their pet birds and is a lot of fun to read.
The Model/Rival Training Technique chapter explains how this method of training is used and this is the way that Alex, the famous African Grey Parrot belonging to Dr. Pepperberg was trained.
Of course, the whole book is not just about teaching your bird to talk. There is wonderful advice on general pet bird care, solving problems, playing games with your bird, and what to do if your bird turns out to be a non talker.
This book has good basic information for the beginner in bird care or ownership as well as advanced information for those who have experience with birds.
Customer Reviews:
Save your money and time........2003-10-11
There is only about 1/3 of a page's worth of useful information in this book. And it's all the same stuff you can find in any good book about parrot care (start young, use structure, be animated, use contextual references, be patient). A book by Blanchard, Athan, or Doane will tell you these things, but they will also give you much more complete information on training and care. This book is, instead, filled with many big, glossy photographs. They are beautiful, but quite useless. Perhaps this is a good child's picture book.
Polly wanna help folks?.......2002-06-26
This is a great book chocked full of wonderful ideas.
I work for a large software company as a support liaison from my home. Because of this book I now spend a total of maybe one or two hours on the phone a day as opposed to my previous 8 hour a day mindless grind.
I have taught my parrot how to activate speaker phone when she hears a ring along with a few key phrases like: "Please hold all of our representatives are currently assisting other customers.", "Is the caps lock on?", "Try and reboot the system." and "We are aware of the problem and working on it, please be patient." Much to my embarrassment though she has also picked up the phrase: "LEAVE ME ALONE YOU PARASITE!" do to listening to me speak with various telemarketers on the telephone. Oh well, one can not make an omelet with out breaking a few eggs.
So anyway if you have a job that requires you to deal with the public this book will come in handy.
I can now spend four or five hours a day on the phone with other support organizations trying to get my personal computer functioning properly.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent reference set........2001-06-19
This book and Late Perennials (vol. 2) are two of the best gardening books I've ever bought. Other perennial guides give you maybe one, perhaps two photographs of each plant, but these give you photos of nearly every variety and species. Some pictures are of plants in their native habitat, some are set up as specimen sheets, but even these give you a good idea of what the plant looks like. There is also good information about soil, climate, and hardiness. I thought the authors went a bit overboard on the irises, but otherwise they've done a wonderful job. I can't believe there haven't been new editions yet!
Superb COLOR photographs (over 1250); Most informative!.......1997-01-20
Lush and enticing photography. Highly useful growing information: hardiness, bloom season, size, etc. A virtual wish list for every gardener covering the very best of hardy perennials, including new cultivars. I strongly recommend that this book be purchased as a set with the companion Volume II: Late Perennials. The index will direct you to the correct volume and page for each entry. Volume one includes many glorious pictures of peonies, iris, primroses, hellebores and other spring blooming plants. I operate an 8 acre perennial nursery, and read lots of these books, and see this two volume set as a Best Buy. I use it as often as professional reference sets costing hundreds of dollars! You'll love it, too

A collection of overlooked gems by a literary giant.......1997-08-04
Mervyn Peake, best known for his Gormenghast Trilogy, shows another side of his writing in this wonderful collection of poetry. These rhymes seem silly at first, but once you go over them a couple of times you realize that they are much more than nonsense. Also, even if you want to ignore the meanings of the poems, the artistry involved in the writing is delightful. Each word builds upon the last to create a complex structure that is wonderfully stimulating. I only give it an 8 out of 10 because it is a fairly short book, and everyone should read the Gormenghast Trilogy first anyway

let the author speak.......2005-03-01
I need say no more - this alone is worth the book:
THE VASTEST THINGS ARE THOSE WE MAY NOT LEARN
The vastest things are those we may not learn.
We are not taught to die, nor to be born,
Nor how to burn
With love.
How pitiful is our enforced return
To those small things we are the masters of.
My literary holy grail.......2002-06-13
I had tried to get this book ever since I read the Gormenghast books a few years back, but was informed it was unavailable. Imagine my surprise when it shows up on Amazon as available. I bought it as part of a deal with Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor. Had a slight twinge of anxeity when Slaughterboard showed up by itself, but Progress showed up about a week and a half later. Talk about worth the wait. Short stories, plays, illustrations, poems, Peake's Progress is a great collection of major work and oddities that showcases this amazing talent. My personal highlights are the Titus Groan in all but name story "Boy in Darkness" and his full length play "The Wit to Woo". If you are a Peake fan, you should have this, if not, why aren't you?
Peake is great.......2002-02-23
Excellent stuff. The Gormenghast Trilogy is still the book you must read, but this volume is a fine introduction to Mervyn Peake. Btw, ignore the previous reviewer. I'm an admirer of Tolkien and I have no trouble at all appreciating Peake.
Perfect introduction.......2002-01-25
This is a perfect introduction to the work of Mervyn Peake whose great Gormenghast trilogy reprsents the 'other' tradition in British fantasy writing. For me this is altogether much more satisfying than, say, Tolkien. Here you can find Peake's short stories, plays, drawings -- everything that made him the creative genius he was. If Tolkien isn't for you, Peake probably is!
Wonderful Peake!.......2000-02-26
This book contains all of the great moments of Mervyn Peake, save the Gormenghast books. His poetry is excellent, his short stories are great, and his art is just cool.
If you are a Peake fan, you must buy this book.
