5 out of 5 stars Important basics, across the board.......2006-09-05

Whether you are first time or repeat visitor to the Adirondacks, this guide comes in handy on any visit to New York State's great preserve, forever wild.

The guide includes eight chapters. First is the park history, an important background for everyone. Second, comes a short guide on transportation to, from and through the wilderness area, including mileage and estimated traveling times. Third, you'll find an extensive 90-plus pages of accommodations, from the rawest of campsites to the most lavish inns and hotels. Personally, we're partial to the non-profit camp organizations, but there are plenty of choices to suit every taste.

A fourth 50-page chapter covers the theater, arts and museums in the Adirondacks, from Champlain Valley to Lake George. There are music festivals and the Six Indian Nations museum, for example, and the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake is not to be missed. One can also find storytelling sessions in high season.
And don't forget the writer's programs, for wordsmiths among the travelers.

Chapter Five offers 80 pages of eateries, in every category, from the classic Adirondack diner, the Noon Mark in Keene Valley, famous for its home baking (including excellent fruit pies) to the fabulous gourmet restaurants like Friends Lake Inn in Chestertown, a onetime boarding house for tannery workers with a fabulous menu. And of course there are a wide variety of food stores listed, for those who like to eat on the run, or need to stock their ice chests before heading to camp.

The 100-page sixth chapter, on recreational opportunities and listings, is one of the book's most useful, for it not only includes the obvious--like bike, ski, boat rental outlets and tours of every stripe--but also several suggestions on how to find private camping guides.

Chapter Seven keeps the shopaholics happy, I suppose, though I've never found much use for this set of listings. Unfortunately, some of the classic Adirondack stores, like the Bashful Bear bookstore in Keene Valley. Finally, in chapter Eight, is a "nuts and bolts" listing of emergency and medical centers, banks and cash machines, guided tours and an important and useful bibliography for further reading.

We've taken this guide along on every trip to the High Peaks, and it always comes in handy.

        4 out of 5 stars Timely updates.......2006-07-06

The Adirondack Book is an excellent guide to what to do, where to eat, etc., in the Adirondacks. The format is easy to follow, and the comments/recommendations are pretty much dead on. Not all of my personal favorites have found their way into these pages, but I've definitely been introduced to some new faves. Even if you own previous editions, I recommend buying the newest available--things change, and yesterday's hot spot may well have fizzled.

2 out of 5 stars terrible organization, weak on information.......2006-04-06

If this is the best guide for the region there is a wide opening for competition. The organization by topic rather than area makes this book virtually useless for planning a trip. Even if one focuses on a single topic (fishing, hiking, ..) there is little guidance for someone choosing where to go -- often there are lists of places with no descriptions or completely useless paragraphs that say, essentially, "there are many many places you can do X in the Adirondacks." So I agree that this hardly serves as a guide at all. There is some interesting history in the book that could make this worth buying as background reading.

2 out of 5 stars A Skewed and Limited Guide.......2003-08-05

Having spent much time in the Adirondacks, and with a child at school in Saratoga Springs, I was extermely disappointed with the scope of information in this "complete guide". While the historical, geographical and quasi-scientific narrative that Ms. Folwell has compiled is interesting, the information that a traveler/vacationer/tourist (especially one who's new to the area) would need is sorely lacking. The meager information that is available is unusually skewed toward what seems to be the author's limited personal taste in facilities, activities and likes.

Apparently, Ms. Folwell does not like hotels or resorts, since most of them (and there are several in the Adirondacks) were glaringly missing from this book. Also oddly missing were some of the best restaurants in Lake Placid, Saranac Lake and Saratoga Springs. (I concede that "best" is subjective, but there were just too many missing from her book.)

The Adirondacks are a haven for camping, yet this book glossed over that topic with a minimum of information. What about the amazing campsites on the islands of Indian Lake? Or the available lean-to locations in the High Peaks region?

Finally, the organization of this book is antithetical to a good travel guide. Rather than approach the Adirondacks by region, the author divides the book by topic. Since the Adirondacks are relatively large, it's most likely that a visitor will be spending the bulk of her time in a single area. This guide offers no comprehensive list of data about any given area or town, and requires you to jump around and compile your own data sheet if you're staying in one area.

Rather than "A Complete Guide", it would be more appropriate for this book to be called "An Introduction to the Area," since that is in fact exactly what it is, and no more.

4 out of 5 stars A good book for visitors new and old.......2001-06-11

The Adirondack Book is written with a heart for the place it describes, and with a nose for just the right level of detail. The author is clearly a native of the area, with an understanding of its people and its ways, and this shows in her tack on nearly everything she wrtes. Her descriptions of many of the events and places are dead on, and good information is given to the reader about how to find said place or event, and how to find out more information about the subject. Her asides in particular (for example, short essays about blackflies, wildlife, and hypothermia) are well written and dead on target, great advice for the traveler. Finally, she resists speaking overly much about the many topics, and this is a good thing: a book fully describing every last item she mentions would be several thousand pages long! Still, Folwell's book is a boon for the traveler, a great starting place for exploring the biggest park in the contiguous 48.

The only drawback in this book is that of organization. The book is sectioned by activity/attraction, then by region, then by town, instead of region/town/activity. This makes it much more difficult to, say, find out everything you want to know about Speculator or Lake Placid. Still, the entries one finds are clear and concise, and with some extra effort you can find all you want.

        Book Description

As the most important public space in the United States, the Mall in Washington, D.C., has been a vital emblem of national spirit and ideals ever since Major Pierre Charles L'Enfant first envisioned it over two hundred years ago. Although the Mall has undergone numerous changes since its conception, it has retained centrality within the life of the capital and has emerged as an essential symbol of American national identity and an influential model of city planning worldwide.

Featuring fourteen essays by prominent historians, architects, and leaders of some of Washington, D.C.'s most important institutions, this book explores the Mall's origins and growth as well as the shifting political forces and cultural values that have shaped it. Over 140 illustrations help to tell the story of the site, including beautiful vintage maps, prints, and drawings, in addition to numerous contemporary documentary and historical photographs.

Originally published in 1991, The Mall in Washington features a new introduction discussing recent developments on the Mall.

This is a wonderful book on an amazing space. The images are crisp and the text scholarly and fascinating. It's hard to imagine that the mall took so many years to complete, but finally L'Enfant's dream is complete. The mall is a breathtaking vista, that is simply spectacular. To stand at the foot of the Capital and look down the mall is a singular experience, it is quite simply a perfect space, famous the world over. This book does L'Enfant and D.C. proud. Highly recommended.

            Book Description

Explore the history and majesty of America's hallowed military grounds at the Arlington National Cemetery in words and color photographs.

For the almost four million people who visit annually, Arlington represents many different things. For some, it is a chance to walk among headstones that chronicle American history; for many, it is an opportunity to remember and honor the nation's war heroes; and for others, it is place to say a last farewell during funeral services for a family member or friend.

Arlington is the most hallowed burial ground of our fallen military and one of the most visited tourist sites in the Washington, D.C., area. There are veterans and other exceptional individuals buried at Arlington from the Revolutionary War to the present military action in Afghanistan. Arlington has continued to be open and fully operational since Sept. 11, 2001. It has become the final resting place for 65 victims of the terrorist attacks of that day.

This CD-ROM includes detailed information about ceremonies, historical facts about Arlington House, Casualties of War and Honorary War Veterans, Explorers and Astronauts, Historical Figures, Minorities, Presidents, and Justices of the U.S. Supreme Court buried there, Views from Above, Scenes from Within, Armed Service Funerals, Behind the Scenes with Maintenance Workers, Visitor Information, Tomb of the Unknowns, Memorials and Monuments, A Guide to Burials, Wreath Layings, Detailed Maps, and hundreds of color photographs.

In addition to the Arlington material, celebrate the magnificent landmarks of America with unique guides to thousands of historic sites, including the famous monuments and memorials in Washington, DC. The StreetSmart DC map by vanDam is a near-perfect tool for visitors to Washington, DC. For starters, it is laminated and proved to be durable despite heavy use. It fits nicely in a pants pocket so it is easy to carry. It is large enough to allow for a map with street-level detail with lettering large enough to be clear. In addition to the city map, there is an expanded section of the Mall area that is extremely easy to read and use. There are also sections showing the Adams-Morgan area as well as Old Town Alexandria. Indexes are provided not only for streets but all the attractions you could possibly be interested in including parks, museums, government buildings, museums, etc. Metro stops are clearly shown on these maps, but there is also a separate map that shows the individual Metro lines and all of the stops for each one.

I carried this in my pocket every day I was in the city and it was truly worth its weight in gold.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best on the subject.......2007-06-17

This book is a slow read and not the most comprehensive or useful book on this topic. Mostly it covers massage and stretching. It goes over evaluation of the normal horse, identifying problems, preventing problems, massage, exercise therapy, and specific regimes for specialist disciplines. A specific regime is not included for jumpers. The massage section had lots of pictures and showed you, step-by-step, how to do it. Not worth it for me.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for Hands On Equine Care.......2004-12-10

If you are interested in learning not only how to avoid injury to your horse but improve performance, you would do well to take the practical and well-thought out advice offered by this well-respected and credentialed human and equine physiotherapist. Even the spiral binding was considered so to allow one to take it to the barn and lay it open while you practice the many simple yet effective techniques Ms. Sutton covers beside many helpful photos. As in all healthcare, in order to determine what abnormal is, one must start with a clear understanding of normal. While this may seem like "stating the obvious," I come across enough horseowners for whom such things bear repeating. To focus solely on this, is to miss the overall value and important information this book contains. Beside massage and stretching regimens for the horse, stretching and warm up exercises for the rider are also included, so horse and rider function as a more physically harmonious unit vs. separate elements. Chock full of practical tips from hoof balance to suppling exercises, you would do well to own this book.

                      1 out of 5 stars Not Helpful..........2002-10-03

I did not find this book helpful in any way and do not recommend purchasing it for your library. What the author considers helpful tips are statements of the obvious. For example in the Suppling Exercises Applied chapter, a Tip from the author is: "You can rest yourself and the horse in between each exercise, or just continue into the next one straightaway." Advice such as "blankets should fit correctly" is equally ridiculous. There are many other excellent books to use as resources - feel free to pass on this one.

The author covers stresses for each area, common areas of injury and the whys of such; rehabilitation techniques--with the pros and cons of each; short and long term weaknesses that can occur; and much, much more!

This book is highly recommended for the Horse Owner or Rider's Library.

San Francisco, Santa Clara, San Jose, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, San Diego - some of the string of pearls along the length of California.
The book uncovers the work of those few hardy souls who founded those communities in the seventeen-hundreds. Their development model was radically different from the US mainstream: that the land belonged to the Native Americans, and that the missions were to mentor those who volunteered in their transition from the hunter-gatherer/horticulturalist to the agriculturalist strategy.
Already then we see the clash between Serra and the naive Europeans who wanted to rush to impose a European-model urban-based governance system, regardless of the vulnerability of Native-American culture to urban European abuses, and how he held them off for a generation.
And we also see the human dimension: how every great person is in the end a bundle of strengths and weaknesses, and how a person that felt ordinary in himself performs historic achievements. This account is both humbling and empowering.
A clear and fascinating account of Junipero Serra, key person in one of the greatest and most influential states of today's world.

                                      5 out of 5 stars A Child's Introduction To A Christian Hero.......2003-08-24

"Wait For Me" by Sister Mary Helen Wallace, is a short, juvenile biography of Blessed Junipero Serra, founder of the California Missions. I read it with my daughter in preparation for a trip to California. It was an enjoyable introduction to this Christian hero who played a major role in the development of our largest state.

From his youth in Spain, through his education and his pedilogical service at a Spanish seminary, Junipero was preparing himself for the great work of his life. Responding to a call to be a missionary to New Spain, Junipero took the long ocean voyage to Mexico. Anxious to preach to the Indians, Junipero was once again assigned to an academic life at St. Ferdinand College in Mexico City. Eventually, at age 56, his pleas to be sent to California were granted. Walking much of the way, this gray clad Franciscan friar established the chain of missions which would form the foundation of Californian society. Spending most of his time at Carmel, Junipero became the Father of spiritual and secular California.

"Wait For Me" is a charming story written in language which a child can understand and an adult can enjoy. With much dialogue, it reads like a novel. Don't Wait- Read and enjoy!

                                          4 out of 5 stars a very fine biography...........2001-09-12

                                          ....of a very controversial pioneer.

Very well written and intensely interesting, this book compiles different sources to reproduce the tale--interspersed with photographs--of Father Serra and his spiritual colonization of California. Its eye to detail, its recounting of facts and anecdotes not to be found elsewhere, recommends it as a topnotch introduction to and resource for understanding Serra.

Had this book gotten more into the other side of Christianizing a people--the symbolically significant spread of diseases against which Natives had no defenses, the sequestering of them on their own land, the Eurocentric and Christocentric treatment of them as "pagan" savages ("dear childen," as Serra put it with such unconscious infantilization), and the eventual domination of the land itself--it would have been absolutely stellar. By and large, however, these are briefly touched on but minimized.

Nevertheless, the book presents so clear and readable an account of the man and his motives and context that a reader with a more Native-sensitive perspective will easily be able to read between the lines and come away with considerable enrichment.

                                          5 out of 5 stars California's Original Pioneer.......2000-09-14

Although Father Serra's legacy is shrouded in controversy, the tenacious character of the man cannot be denied. In California elementary school students are required to make reports on the Missions of California. A better starting point might be a study of the man who is credited with founding the mission system. The missions were essentially a series of "colonial" churches within a reasonable traveing time for the period. Fray Serra was truly a fascinating person who began his work to spread Christianity in Mexico, becoming the President of the Baja Missions under the Franciscan order. Many unknowwn facts are revealed in the biography, the authors use an extensive bibliography including Father Palou, his lifelong friend and confident who penned his biography over two hundred years ago. The details of Fray Serra's life are abundant, painting a picture of a man who was dedicated to Christianity first and foremost. The suffering that he endured is remarkable and an inspiration in the modern world of worldly distractions. The trials and tribulations of establishing the system of missions is illustrated with word and vintage photgraphs. An absouletly spellbinding bit of history that is relived with accuracy thanks to the excellent research done by the authors. The life of one of the founding fathers of California is a neccessary foundation for understanding the development of California. The treatment and rebeliousness of the the indigineous people is a study in culture clash. The inevitable result that persists to this day in California has its roots in the first encounters between the Europeans and the natives and their beliefs. An excellent book full of primary sources, for teachers and students alike.
