I have bought this book around 10 days ago and must say that I am very disappointed about its content. I bought it because of the superb star rating it had. It is undoubtedly not ideal at all for someone who will be fending for himself whilst in Italy as all it has is superb photography and a good description of the various locations, but no info on tourist info offices, how to get to the various locations, emergency numbers etc. I sincerely can only suggest it to somebody who will be guided by somebody who is very familiar with the territory. I must say it is not written for the budget traveller and the few hotels and restaurants which are suggested at the back of the book are too expensive to even be considered by a budget traveller. Unfortunately I had received a large number excellent brochures from the various tourist offices in Italy which I obtained from Let's go Italy and I must say I have found this book a pure waste of good money.

This book was a good general reference on Northern Italy. There were lots of good pictures and description of places and sites. There was also an extensive section on Northern Italian culture, which is good per people who would like to "experience" Italy rather than just blow through on a site seeing trip. However, don't look for listing about specific hotels or restaurants in this book. However, this would be an excellent for anyone planning a trip to Northern Italy.

The pronghorn antelope (Antilocapra americana) evolved, it would seem, to feed a host of predators, ranging from coyotes and wolves to the long-disappeared saber-toothed tiger and American cheetah. (Cheetahs, John A. Byers writes, were probably "the principal agents of selection that prompted the evolution of astounding running speed in pronghorn"--a speed that has been clocked at 100 kilometers an hour.) Lacking many of those predators, today the pronghorn population has grown throughout the American West, making the animals a common sight for ecotourists and residents alike. Among other things considered in this thorough survey of pronghorn biology, Byers looks at "ghost behavior"--patterns of action determined by ecological conditions that long ago changed. Horses, for instance, remain herd-based social animals as a protective mechanism against predators, although, as he writes, "predator-driven selection has been relaxed."

Pronghorn antelope are the fastest runners in North America, clocked at speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour. Yet none of their current predators can come close to running this fast. Pronghorn also gather in groups, a behavior commonly viewed as a "safety in numbers" defense. But again, none of their living predators are fearsome enough to merit such a response.
In this elegantly written book, John A. Byers argues that these mystifying behaviors evolved in response to the dangerous predators with whom pronghorn shared their grassland home for nearly four million years: among them fleet hyenas, lions, and cheetahs. Although these predators died out ten thousand years ago, pronghorn still behave as if they were present—as if they were living with the ghosts of predators past.
Byers's provocative hypothesis will stimulate behavioral ecologists and mammalogists to consider whether other species' adaptations are also haunted by selective pressures from predators past. The book will also find a ready audience among evolutionary biologists and paleontologists.

Pronghorn are not antelope!!!.......2001-11-04
This book basically explains why pronghonr are the coolest animal on earth. Big, mean, fast predators a really long time ago selected for fast moving animals. Pronghorn have really good eye sight and live in really open places. They have really intersting reproductive adaptations. They are a really neat animal.
This book is based on almost 20 years of experience from the National Bison Range. This book is very well known in the science community and very respectable. I know of classes that use this book. Its a dang good book.

Stimulate Your Design Ideas.......2000-05-28
The Ultimate Garden Designer is one of the best books I've read on the subject. I've been gardening for about twenty years and have read and done much in landscape and garden design. If your looking for a book about concepts, not specific plants this is the best one I've come across. It will NOT make you into a garden designer if you don't already have a working knowledge of basic design concepts. [To further clarify it does not go into long discussions on UNIVERSAL principles of garden design, it does however give great design perspective insight into each specific plan and feature.] What it will do is stimulate your design ideas based on your potential applications of a given design theme.
The book has many colorful three dimensional renderings and two dimensional plans. They are categorized into complete gardens and garden features.
The complete gardens are based on theme's such as cottage, kitchen, family, plant enthusiast, disabled, water, Japanese, etc. Each plan has renderings and a plan, a short "design philosophy" discussion, a plant selection thought process, unique features identified, and design variations. The design variations are great for stimulating ideas on ways to adapt a given style of garden to different lot constraints (ie. long and narrow, corner, or triangle lot). The garden features section walks you through the styles, materials, and techniques for things such as water features, rock gardens, pergolas, walls, steps, herb gardens, etc. There are great color photo examples, different design sketches, and a discussion of design considerations.
The book also includes a plant directory of the most common plants in the included plans. Some will be familiar and some won't since this book was written in the U.K. But the plants list is not the main attraction here.
I highly recommend this book to everyone who is enthusiastic about designing their gardens as a whole and not just a mish-mash of disparate plants. A must for every serious garden library.

Having looked at many, many landscaping books, I can honestly say this one is among the best. The pictures are beautiful yet practical and feasible. Lots of practical suggestions help modify for your own yard.

As an adult I thought the story was very intriging and exciting. This was
a Magellan that was never protrayed in history books of yore. The drawings were absolutely beautiful, full of so much detail and interesting features. This book makes a marvelous present for children
learning about history. After reading this book, I can't believe that
Hollywood has never made a movie about Magellan!

The best biographical book on this explorer yet! You can actually feel what Ferdinand Magellan felt during his voyage around the world. During his life between 1480-1521, he goes through many tasks, his age doesn't matter to him when he decides to circumnavigate the world. Who named the Pacific Ocean? He did! Pacific means calm. Did you know that? I bet you did not! You can find out more about his extroardinary life and achievements in this book. This book is great for bibliography writing, historical figure speeches, or just for plain fun and your acknowledgement.
