Tahiti & French Polynesia Guide (Serial)
ASIN: 1569752966 |
Book Description
Combining unique travel choices, outdoor adventures, and little-known locales into guides where vacations meet adventures, each title in the Hidden series also offers readers the comfort of detailed maps, internet information for each listing, author picks, suggested itineraries, and walking and driving tours. Hidden Tahiti and French Polynesia is the ultimate insider's guide to the wonders of this South Pacific paradise. Whether your dream island vacation includes a stay at a top resort like the Hotel Bora Bora, where the accommodations are thatched bungalows perched on stilts above a calm lagoon, or an escape to a local inn like Pension Papahani, where owner Vilna Tuheiaua adorns each room with home-grown flowers and her brother Tehu serenades the guests with Tahitian songs, Hidden Tahiti and French Polynesia will lead you to adventures above and below the water. Information on 74 diving sites, 35 swimming spots, 21 snorkeling areas, 30 surfing breaks and 41 tropical hiking trails is included. The guide also features numerous cultural attractions, from ancient Polynesian temples and traditional tattoo parlors, to the Gauguin Museum and black pearl shops.

Excellent information, very helpful.......2004-02-11
The excellent and detailed information helped me plan our stay on the Tahitian islands thoroughly. Especially the comments on the accomodation offerings were very valuable.
NOT a Honeymoon Guide.......2004-01-16
I bought a Tahiti guide book because I am going on my honeymoon and looking to read up on the islands that I will be visiting on that trip. This book did have some valuable information for me like good hiking trips and sights to see, tours and things of that nature, but the author's taste seems to be different from what mine would be when going on a honeymoon getaway. He never did claim it to be a honeymoon book, but Tahiti is a common destination for honeymooners so you would think that the book would include some of that type of information. When I think of my honeymoon, I don't think of staying in places that are off the beaten path in a foreign country, or in homes of families that take you in and you can stay in instead of a regular hotel (dangerous? I wouldn't do it in my own country). That may be up someone else's alley and if it is yours than this may be the book for you. I would think he were mentioning these places to stay to cover all bases for all types of budgets, but he puts them as "author favorites" and makes them seem as if they are the best on the island and it just seems a little crazy. This author is someone that this type of vacation appeals to. He focuses an awful lot on artifacts and history and those types of things to see in Tahiti, which is fine but a little excessive. He speaks of "well-heeled Americans with money to spend" with a hint of resentment when talking about the nice luxury resorts that are available to stay in or the nice restaurants. You can tell he is almost annoyed by all the tourism that has popped up, especially in Bora Bora. I would say skip this book and get the Open Road Tahiti & French Polynesia Guide, it is way better.
Not Very Helpful.......2003-11-19
I just returned from a trip to Tahiti and Moorea and used this book. So my feedback is specifically for those two islands. I must say the book was very spotty in terms of the quality of recommendations and its comprehensiveness. First, many of the locations that were recommended(restaurants/sights) were hit or miss. Second, I was so frustrated with the book that I went to restaurants that were unlisted and found them to be 100 times better that the author's recommendations. Which raised serious questions, "why weren't these restaurants listed in the book?" Moorea has a very limited number of restaurants and thus no restaurant should be excluded (Note: The restaurant was not new and the owner said it had been around for many years - just in case you were wondering).
In addition, the book is not well organized when you're trying to look for things.
I suggest you find another book if you're headed to French Polynesia.
Loved it!!!.......2003-02-13
I bought 4 books on the French polynesian islands and this was the best by far. I love his detail, his points of interest and his enthusiasm. After reading this book I couldn't wait to go there! This will be the one book I bring with me, it has everything. Where to stay, where to eat (like what native fruit to try), customs, phrases in polynesian and french, and much more.

Top Rate.......2001-08-15
The problem with most books on drawing that have an instructional bent to them is that they are dependant on the work of second-rate draftsment and tacky artists to illustrate them. This is obviously counter-productive. Though this is not an instructional book, it is filled with nothing but the best graphic work done in all mediums by a good variety of contemporary artists. Seeing the higher level of what is being produced now is instructional and inspirational in itself.

Your Rottweilers Life.......2000-03-14
I recommend this book to anyone that is thinking of buying an Rottweiler or to anyone that is new to the breed. I find that the information is up to date, accurate, and very instructive. Ms Dearth gives advice on all aspects of ownership and many humorous insights into the personality of this breed. Living with Rottweilers, written from the heart........2000-03-12
I have never read a book before about Rottweilers that instantly grabbed your attention like Kim Dearth's book Your Rottweiler's Life. Kim has approached the subject from every side: a helpful veterinarian's guide, a dog trainer's 'how to', and a selection of stories with a personal touch from people who own and live with Rottweilers.
Your Rottweiler's Life.......2000-03-09
A truly loving and detailed book that could be titled "Your Rottweiler's Life with You". This book offers respectful and caring guidance for bringing a Rottweiler into your family, and what it is like to live with and care for one of these large dogs. This book was written with "heart" and attention to detail and is an excellent addition to the Rottweiler fan's library. It is especially useful for someone considering buying or adopting a Rottweiler and for a first time owner.

This book has already paid for its self........2005-03-08
This book is a little large to be carrying around, however I still do carry it to places that I already know will have the pattern I am looking for.
The forward describes "Elegant" glassware as handmade and acid etched glassware that was sold by department and jewelry stores during the Depression era through the 1950's, differentiating it from the dime store and giveaway glass that has become known as Depression glass. The word "Elegant" has become "official" nomenclature among today's dealers for designating handmade glass.
It is well organized with the glass patterns in alphabetical order and the prices in columns by color of glass. Most of the pictures are color and have good enough definition to identify what you are looking at. There are a contents by pattern and a contents by company.

gene florence , any of his books are concise and show the items in a clear picture . he presents the items along with the current prices . all of genes books as is this one , are lovely to look at and very informative, giving a lot of joy.
Beautiful Book.......2002-08-18
Orginally purchased for my mother, I purchased it also after looking through it. The original reason for the book was to attempt to id some etched glass, the glass was not in the book, but it was worth it anyway. Beautiful photos, good writing, I saw pieces I had not known exsited. Who knew that such elegant depression glass was out there! I would not recommend it for the "flea market" or "yard sale" groupie, one of his Collectors Encyclopedias may work better, but it is still a very nice book and well worth it if you collect or deal in higher end depression glass.
Great guide to inform and direct you !.......2002-04-05
This is another fave of mine from Gene Florence! He sure knows what he is writing about!!!This book is loaded with color photos of many different types of depression glass.I never realized how many patterns, and companies, there were out there!!!He also is very thorough about listing what pieces were in what colors and the values for each color.
Overall a fantastic book!
Best of the Best.......2001-08-11
I have a number of collector books, including Elegant Glassware of the Depression Era : Identification and Value Guide (8th Ed)by Gene Florence. Gene Florence books are my favorite by far. This book is very well formatted. It is loaded with clear pictures that are helpful in pattern identification, informative text, and has easy-to-use pricing guides. The book indexes the glassware by pattern name and by manufacturer.
Whether you are a novice collector or "expert", I am sure you will find this book to be very helpful. Gene Florence's down-to-earth presentation of glassware is refreshing and practical!

An excellent resource for home and school........1998-02-17
The book was enough to start me thinking about an all year garden. Here in Northern California it gets close to freezing in the winter so fresh vegetables from my own yard are not an option. I found a hydroponic unit to experiment with. I was growing fresh lettuce sprouts in less than 2 weeks.
Customer Reviews:
This book needs a lot of work........2001-07-28
I was very dissapointed in this book. It's not up to date and and seems more focused on bag growing than anything else. It would help if the author would add some illustration to this book. If you want a good book to read on hydroponics you'd better look elsewhere.
Lt. Columbo Teaches Hydroponics.......1999-07-16
After seeing a friend's copy of Saffell's book all I can say is "thank heaven I didn't buy this!" Hilmur possibly is a great hydroponicist and insightful marketer of plant materials; but after submitting to his stumbling, barely-linear ramblings and tangential explainations if felt like a murder suspect zeroed in the sights of Lt. Cloumbo. "Oh yea, just one more thing..sorry I didn't mention it before..just a loose end to tie up..."
For the beginning hydroponics practitioner who might find Howard Rush's HYDROPONIC FOOD PRODUCTION: A Definitive Guidebook of Soilless Food-Growing Methods a little too much in detail and information, I recommend his simpler and more hobby/home gardener oriented HYDROPONICS: Questions And Answers for Successful Growing. Don't waste your time or money on Saffell's Shoe Strings!
Skip this book.......1998-11-10
While the book isn't completely worthless, it is very poorly written - it needs a good editor. The author states at the beginning that the reader should read completely through before acting on anything and that's good advice, because the book is full of "oh, by the way, you need to do (this) first" sections. The author's description of hydroponic methods is very vague and unclear, and includes very, very few illustrations to clarify matters.
Book Description
Do you find yourself constantly "throwing out and buying new"? Earl Proulx offers more than 1,000 lessons in conversation and resourcefulness--notions that were second nature to past generations--to help you take better stock and better care of the things you already have. You'll reap rewards in both savings and satisfaction!
Customer Reviews:
you need this if you want to be frugal.......2006-01-16
this book i wouldn't exactly describe as exciting reading but is deffinantly a must have, you can find out how to care for or repair most anything you use.
Earl Proulx is a god!.......2000-09-22
Full disclosure: I work at Yankee Magazine, and I worked on this book with Earl. That said, I'm proud to say that this book is packed with clever and useful advice: everything from how to make your light bulbs last longer to how to get the black crud off your cast iron skillet. This book has sold almost half a million copies through direct mail promotions. The first reviewer is right: it makes a great gift.
A good book of its type and great for a gift.......1998-02-25
While not the best of the Penny-pinching guides this one is up there. Earl Proulexs short side trips about his long history as a contracter make this a good read as well as informitive. The 30 or so "puzzlers" (pictures of odd tools that you have to guess what they do) are fun and may bring back some memorys in the over 60 group. If you need a present for someone who likes to putter aroud the house (and says " they dont make things like they use to") this would be a great gift.

An introduction to six of the Spanish Conquistadores.......2004-06-25
R. Conrad Stein has written enough books for the various series published by The Child's World press that he not only know the formula, but how to exploit it to his advantage. Like all of those other volumes, "The Conquistadores: Building a Spanish Empire in the Americas" is required to have four chapters, but Stein is allowed to have detailed sidebars in each chapter and he really takes advantage of that in this book.
The first chapter on Spain and the Conquistadores explains how fighting for several centuries to free their land from Moorish rule created a warrior class in Spain that took advantage of the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus to take armies across the sea to serve God and the monarch (and also to get rich). The other three chapters are devoted to the three most famous conquistadores, namely Hernando Cortes and the Conquest of Mexico, Francisco Pizarro and the Conquest of the Incas, and Francisco de Coronado, Explorer of the American Southwest. But then Stein also devotes sizeable sidebars to Vasco de Balboa, Discoverer of the Pacific, Cabeza de Vaca, the Compassionate Conquistador, and Hernando de Soto, Explorer of the Mississippi. The Time Line in the back of the book shows who was doing what when and where to help put each conquistador in perspective. The result is a nice introduction to a half dozen of the key conquistadors who helped to establish a Spanish presence in the New World on a level that is at least comparable to what you would expect to find in the early chapters of a standard grade school American history textbook.
The book is illustrated with historic prints and paintings (the cover is a detail of Spanish soliders taken from Juan O'Gorman's "Historical Mural). The first eight volumes in this series, "A Proud Heritage: The Hispanic Library," were published last year and "The Conquistadores is one this year's eight new volumes. The others are devoted to "Christopher Columbus: Opening the Americas to European Exploration," "Emiliano Zapata: Revolutionary and Champion of Poor Farmers," "Frida Kahlo: An Artist Celebrates Life," "Hernando Cortés: Conquistador and Empire Builder," "Mario Molina: Chemist and Nobel Prize Winner," and "Pancho Villa: Mexican Revolutionary Hero," as well as a volume on "The Changing Face of America: Hispanic Roots, Hispanic Pride" (the first set had a volume on Coronado). Given that Hispanics are now the second largest ethnic group in the country the value of a series like this is better than ever.
