Customer Reviews:
worthwhile companion guide to the coastal Carolinas.......2003-04-25
Mike Sigalas's guide to the coastal areas of North and South Carolina is a fascinating resource with maps, pictures, historical information, and an insider's knowledge of restaurants, accommodations and entertainment.
The book is written in a casual, friendly style and organized into sections about the region's history, climate, wildlife and plants; travel information such as activities, food, transportation and services; and in-depth chapters on Nags Head and the Outer Banks, New Bern and the Central Coast, Wilmington and the Southern North Carolina Coast, Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand, Charleston and Vicinity, and Beaufort and the Low Country. The book concludes with a listing and synopsis of books and films set in the area or about the area, and a very good index.
Having just returned from a stay in Charleston, I can say that the chapter on that area was well-written, informative and presented well. Museum and attraction listings include hours, fees and phone numbers. Accommodations described were traditional, B&Bs, rental homes and campgrounds. Restaurants are divided by cuisine and location; we tried four of them and were happy with the advice. Entertainment information is given for festivals, concert venues, clubs and bars, playhouses, movie theaters and coffee shops. Sports, recreation and shopping information proved reliable, and the transportation section addressed walking, tours, public transport and visitor centers. Several pages discuss places of interest in the Greater Charleston area.
This book was very helpful to us. Well done.
Carolinas - A Little Bit of Heaven.......2003-01-14
At last, a travel book that informs like a dusty tome of history, amuses and entertains like comedy, and that is as hard to put down as thriller fiction. This author has given us an overview of the Coastal Carolinas that is observant and accurate. He writes about the region with a non-deprecating irreverance born of loving familiarity...... his is a self-mocking humor, that is acceptable because it is obvious that this author is in love with this little bit of heaven. Well-done, Mr. Sigalas!
Terrific travel book!.......2001-07-10
I loved this book! It made me laugh out loud! The writer is really funny and his restaurant recommendations were fantastic! The sites to see were also great. Sigalas really knows the South.
Very informative travel guide.......2001-07-09
This book came in handy on my recent trip to Charleston, SC. The recommendations the author made were excellent. I found the book to be entertaining as well. I also have the South Carolina Handbook and it's excellent too.
Great information and a really funny read!.......2001-07-09
This travel guide book is fantastic! It is full of great information on hotels, restaurants and places to see plus it's really fun to read. This writer is really humorous! He knows his Southern history, culture, and food. I highly recommend it!

Book Description
God spoke to me and this is what he said! Do you ever wonder why bad things happen? Why did my child die? Why did a hurricane kill so many people? Why did I lose my job? How many times have you blamed God? Now, what if I told you that you are in a huge multi-faceted game? A game where you are the hero battling spiritual forces of evil. I must be joking, let me prove it to you! In 'The Game of Life', I will answer the question, why? I will reveal the true purpose for each experience you go through. I will use my life as an illustration to show you the veil of darkness and demonstrate to you the battle between good versus evil. More importantly, I will explain why the game is about to end! Yes, the clock is ticking down to the very last second! Are you playing your 'Game of Life' to win?
Customer Reviews:
Very, very impressive.......2006-08-11
I think it took a lot of guts for an upholster to write a book like this. I was very impressed that someone without any experience could write so well. The editing may not have been perfect, but I don't think the "Divine" expects perfection (which the book is very clear about). Anyone expecting God to edit His own work is just plain ridiculous. The content was extremely enlightening, and definitely God sent. I hope this author continues to write, I think she has an important message.
This needs edited badly. .......2006-08-11
Just on the back cover of this book, there are six errors of spelling, punctuation, and usage. If this book was truly from the Divine, surely He would edit his work. The fluidity of reading this book was sketchy at best, and positively rambling at worst. In order to affect people, a book must be tightly edited; that demands respect. I think winning the game of life must not require these demands, but reading the book does.
It filled me with confidence.......2006-08-07
My father died last year . He was my best friend. After reading this book I stopped blaming God and I started praising his name. Now I know that my life has meaning even if I can't talk to my dad and receive the encouragement that I need to live. Now I feel like I can let go of the past and march forward with confidence so I can win my game of life just like my dad won his.
Great book!.......2006-08-02
Demons and angels, self-writing typewriters, elaborate games. You have to read it for yourself. There is not a dull moment.
Best book ever! .......2006-08-02
Best book ever! I am raising three kids, who are three and under. This book helped me deal with the frustration and loneliness of motherhood by encouraging me not to be so hard on myself. I realized that as long as I was doing my best, that was good enough, and I would succeed the tasks God had set out for me.

In the years between 1900 and 1930, American psychiatrists transformed their profession from a marginal science focused primarily on the care of the mentally ill into a powerful discipline concerned with analyzing the common difficulties of everyday life. How did psychiatrists effect such a dramatic change in their profession's fortunes and aims? Here, Elizabeth Lunbeck examines how psychiatry grew to take the whole world of human endeavor as its object. Customer Reviews:
eloquently written, but not always on the mark........1998-12-16
Elizabeth Lunbeck's purpose in writing Psychiatric Persuasion is to reconstruct the development of psychiatry during the early part of the twentieth century through the use of the archives of the Boston Psychopathic Hospital, as well as to examine the process by which American psychiatrist effected a momentous shift in their discipline's foundations and fortunes. Using Foucaldian methodology, Lunbeck argues that the revolution in psychiatric thinking revamped the culture as a whole, placing psychiatric views and methods at the center of social and cultural life. In addition to this, she maintains that the source of psychiatry's cultural authority is not found within it institutions rather can be located in it's conceptual apparatuses. Unfortunatly, her book lacks contextual evidence from the period and has a sort of hermetic feel, sealed off from the influences of the period. Another problem is within the fundamental arguement; did psychiatrist in the 1910's actually effect this major change, or was it the psychoanalyst? Also, i think it is questionable when this shift actually took place- if it was in fact during the early part of this century, or if it was rather during the 1940's. Her femisnist and Foucaudian assumptions tend to skew the objectivity of her work. A final question that must be asked is whether this shift in the psychiatric profession was actually TO normalcy rather than AWAY FROM insanity. Overall, the book was well written, full of anecdoatal accounts that illustrated her points, and very interesting to read. Unfortunatley, it was too narrow in scope to make the broad claims it purported.

Customer Reviews:
Way too brief..........2004-06-29
"SUCCESSFUL SKETCHING" by Valerie Wiffen:
I rate Valerie Wiffen's book only 1 star. At only 128 pages, the book covers not just "sketching" per se, but everything else related to sketching, but in BRIEF; there's brief architectural sketching, brief flower sketching, brief portraiture, brief figure sketching, and even brief still life. With such cursory treatment of each subject, how could anyone hope for success?
The illustrations were uninspiring, and I found the overall flow of the book to be broken and disjointed from chapter to chapter. It's too short and requires expansion and more illustration. There are other, more thorough books on the market.

Book Description
Whether you are a first-time visitor to France or a seasoned Francophile, general tourist or serious collector, this guide to the flea markets of France is an essential companion on your travels.
Sandy Price, a voracious flea marketer, has toured the French countryside to compile this exhaustive and comprehensive listing of flea markets. She has discovered exactly which markets--whether they are urban or rural, upscale or low-end--are the best for uncovering specific treasures from
café au lait bowls and faïence pottery to antique clothes and linens to war memorabilia and farm tools.
Organized by region, markets are rated according to price range and quality of merchandise, scenic value, and nearby amenities. Far from being a dry catalog of lists and addresses, this guide provides colorful history and cultural information, invaluable collecting advice, travel tips, and restaurant recommendations that could only come from someone who has frequented the sometimes off-the-beaten paths to the flea markets of France.
Exploring the Flea Markets of France is an indispensable sourcebook for anyone looking for authentic French treasures to bring back home.
More than 200 market listings
Descriptions of more than 30 popular French collectibles
A handy English-French glossary of key phrases you'll need to know to bargain successfully
Important packing, shipping, and customs information

Customer Reviews:
Out-dated.......2004-07-27
This book gives prices in FF (French Francs). France changed from Francs to Euros in 2000. Does that give you a hint of how out-dated this book is? Granted, a lot of the information will still be valid, but much will not; needs another edition with a serious update. Also, could use lots of photos or drawings to illustrate the points she's making (for examples, Price discusses various types of French pottery; it would be nice to see what she's talking about)
This is probably a better book for armchair travel than for actually guiding you through French flea markets. Good luck!
Paris Bible.......2002-04-25
Would never sell this book! Would never loan this book! But you can come to my house and look at it. Every bit of information (and there is a lot) is absolutely accurate!
My friend Joann and I had planned two weeks in Paris, just for Flea Markets, when my "brilliant" friend Annie in California sent me this book. I can't image my "hunt" without it. It made preparing for the trip a blast and the actual running around a breeze. Thank you Sandy. I would buy anything that you wrote. To the rest of you: Don't even think about it. Just buy the book and hop on a plane. Take along Sandy's advice and extra suitcases!
Road Tested the Section on Paris!.......2000-12-05
Thank you, Sandy, for this great book! Just returned from Paris where 3 other antique dealers and I visited all the markets listed for Paris that were available in November. The information was accurate and honest and the directions very complete. This is a great time saver for serious shoppers like we are and enabled us to maximize our limited time in Paris. We plan to use the other sections of the book on a future trip (soon we hope!) and recommend it to others we discover that are planning a shopping trip in France. Well worth the modest price!
exploring the flea markets of france.......1999-11-22
I roadtested this book on a recent trip to Provence and it was just what I needed. Not only did it tell me about the markets and their wares, but it also directed me to the best meal of my trip. The other big plus was useful French phrases for transactions with vendors who had little English.
Warm, colourful ramble through French flea markets.......1999-07-15
This is an engaging, knowledgeable book that vividly conveys the sights and sounds of French flea markets and their remarkable history. The author knows her stuff, and her love for the colours and textures of their wares is infectious. Price's prose style is friendly and authoritative, with a sly sense of humour. I found it a great read for anyone who likes France, but it's a must for the flea market enthusiast.
Customer Reviews:
A FUN COLLECTIBLE BOOK and HISTORY LESSON, TOO.......2002-04-29
I have purchased other books in this series that have been rather skimpy and--the truth be told--boring. But the COLLECTIBLES edition is anything but. I picked up a healthy helping of tips and techniques on collecting (and have visted some of the super recommended Web sites). But I also learned a great deal about history through the collectible items featured in the book--like stamps and coins. The political items chapter was fabulous. And I love the cool collectible pictures throughout the book. The variety was neat. This is just a fun and informative book!!!
Entertaining and informative from start to finish!!!.......2002-04-06
This is a great starter book for collectors of all kinds. Just the Web site recommendations alone are worth the purchase price. I found a super wholesale distributor for flea market sellers (like me) that I didn't know existed!!! I've since placed an order for dolls, collector knives, etc. at rock bottom prices!!! Another thing I really like about this book is its breezy and witty approach to things. The author gives us histories of so many collectible items. I'm not a postcard collector, for instance, but I found reading about them fascinating. This book is just plain fun!!!
Fun and Informative Introduction!.......2002-03-31
This book is worth getting for all the cool websites it lists, but as a bonus you get gobs more good stuff. It's an interesting intro to collectibles of all kinds. There's practical information and fun historical tidbits about collecting and collectibles. I learned a lot of things I didn't know. I'll be an educated consumer when I visit the flea markets and garage sales in my town. This book totally rocks! As they say on ebay: A+++++

Most practical book I have ever read on the subject........2001-08-17
Even though this book is older it has the some of the most useful information I have ever read. It covers many areas including how to get started in the business. I would reccomend this book to anyone considering opening an antique and or collectible business. It would also be useful to anyone already in the business. I wish he had a newer book covering selling on the internet. If anyone finds that he has I am sure it will be just as good or better.

To the tightwad's favorite poem, "Use it up/Wear it out/Make it do/Or do without," may be added, not so poetically, "Buy it cheap/Scrub it up/Make it work/And sell it for a profit." This is the motto of The Rummager's Handbook, a fascinating little book with tips for smart and thrifty rummage-sale addicts.
Book Description
Antiquing as a fun and potentially profitable pastime has never been more popular, and this book offers hundreds of tips and ideas for finding sales and auctions, bargaining, determining value, and taking it home.
Customer Reviews:
Mishmash of the obvious, outdated advice, and some good tips.......2002-11-26
Most of this book is common sense (e.g. "Refuse to pay high prices for dirty, faulty, trashy junk that a seller is promoting as antique or collectible" -- well, duh!). Unless you're brand-spanking-new to garage sales or secondhand shopping, you probably already know most of what's in this book. And I thought the whole section on how to organize your secondhand treasures was a bit weird -- don't tell me how to decorate my house, thank you! Also, since this book was published in 1995 (pre-eBay), the "Selling your treasures" section is now worthless as eBay has completely revolutionized not only the selling process but also folks' newfound realization of the worth of their junk. Some useful tips throughout (the cleaning solutions section was good), but overall, not a book worth buying.
Promises more than it delivers.......2001-07-13
Oh, dear. This book is like a poorly run rummage sale or overpriced thrift store -- dig around and you might find a gem or two, but overall it isn't worth the effort.
It might be good for people who have never dared to set food in a thrift store or garage sale, but for anyone with a modicum of thrifting experience (and who else is going to be reading this?), the information is far too general and obvious.
In trying to be fair, the author can't make up his mind whether, for example, you should or should not buy treasures (and they're always "treasures") you don't need, giving arguments for and against in different sections. What can you do with a guy who thinks you should definitely buy wire hangers ("It's always good to have extra hangers on hand and, sometimes, plastic-coated hangers just won't work") and yarn ("Consider buying a box of bargain yarn to have on hand for friends who knit or crochet while they are recovering from an illness") but doesn't understand vinyl ("Quantities of records are disappearing from secondhand marketplaces, but I'm not sure who is buying them. Antiques dealers don't seem interested,") and insists, "Every household should have a Cabbage Patch doll ... Keep the dolls in mind as gift ideas."
However, if you want reinforcement to help recruit a friend who has never thrifted, this is a friendly and folksy book that does make it seem fun, and the author certainly speaks from experience ... oh, never mind, go straight to Al Hoff's info-packed, fun, and campy book "Thrift Score: The Stuff, the Method, the Madness!" instead.
Not very useful........1999-07-18
The information covered is not really very practical for someone interested in collectibles or semi-antiques. Options such as checking trash was not what I was looking for.

Book Description
Following "House Doctor" and "House Doctor Quick Fixes", this text is the latest title from TV's DIY guru, Ann Maurice. Packed with hints and tips for fixing up the house and adding hundreds to its value, this book is aimed at all home enthusiasts. Each house is dealt with in its entirety and there is more focus on the owners of the houses than in the two previous books. Maurice gives her initial diagnosis of the house as a whole and her final verdict is highlighted in a box. The changes made to every room are documented along with the owners' reactions to them. Each case history is followed by examples of how to transform something from tatty to tasteful, for example, transforming an old garden table into a mosaic dining table. A number of different styles are covered: Victorian; country; retro; minimalist chic; seaside; and so forth. The key components needed to get a particular look are detailed and illustrated.
