Customer Reviews:
Great info for planning a trip.......2007-01-09
We just pulled out this book again to plan a trip in 2007. It is jam packed with lots of useful overviews and info of the whole Caribbean.
Best of breed..........2005-08-30
Truly can not plan a trip to paradise without this book. Fodors is IMO the leader of the genre of tropical travel books.
This 2005 edition is thoroughly up-to-date and crammed full of useful information.
Best of breed!
The best guidebook on the Caribbean..........2005-08-27
Fodor's Caribbean is different from other Fodor's guidebooks; in most cases (Fodor's London, Fodor's Paris) the traveler is beginning with the specific destination in mind. Those guidebooks are geared to get as much as possible out of a given city. Fodor's Caribbean is designed to help the reader to DECIDE where to go.
The Caribbean is a vast area and each island is different from the next. There is something there for everybody. It runs the gamut in terms of cultures and prices. The first sixty-six pages of this book are filled with general information about the Caribbean to help you plan your trip. The "What's Where" section is especially helpful; it gives a paragraph breakdown on each island. This is followed by the equally useful "Island Finder" chart: this is a graph with all the islands arranged vertically and every possible category of interest (price, beaches, golf, night-life, etc.) arranged horizontally. Each island's price and activities are rated to help you determine which one is best for your interests and your budget. The introduction also has a ton of other useful information, such as when to go, currency, events, and various other travel tips.
The bulk of the book (and it is a bulky book) is like an encyclopedia of islands; each island (or island cluster) has its own chapter that tells you everything you could possibly want to know about it: history, location, size, population, activities, events, etc. Of course, all the restaurants and hotels are rated according to quality and price.
For my money, the best islands in the Caribbean are the smaller ones that take more trouble to get to. St. Barth's used to be the best and most inexpensive island; now it is the best and MOST expensive. Then, little-known Anguilla became the "new" St. Barth's; now, it is almost as expensive as the old St. Barth's. Believe it or not, there are still islands in the Caribbean that you have never heard of, which are unique and authentic and make for the best vacations. Take Saba, for example: this is an island so small that the islanders only go by their first names. Saba is simply a volcano rising out of the ocean. There are no beaches on Saba, but it has some of the best diving around. There are other islands out there - this book will help you find them.
Much imitated, never quite equaled.......2005-02-14
Still the best. Comprehensive, well organized, easy on the eyes, easy on the hands, and compact enough to take wherever you go. None of those fancy-schmancy pictures and other graphics that just distract you from what you're looking for. Of course, as with all guidebooks, sometimes the ratings make you wonder what they were smoking at the time; also I could do without those advertisement pages in the middle of the book. DON'T RELY TOO MUCH ON OUTDATED EDITIONS, because of how often places open and close, or are affected by construction, hurricanes, and whatever else, or just change hands (which means the quality can change).

Book Description
This is the first monograph of the renowned Cuban artist Josa Bedia, whose art is as fresh as wet graffiti and as ancient as cave paintings. The Cuban-born artist resolves the distance of millennia in spare line drawings rooted at once in an appreciation for comic art and an abiding belief in the shared characteristics of indigenous faiths. A priest of Palo Monte, a rural religion closely tied to nature, Bedia has studied with Lakota Indians, the Yoruba of West Africa, and adherents of the pan-Caribbean Santer'a religion. From a personal cosmography born of his immersion in diverse cultures, Bedia's drawings are populated by godlike animistic figures with extenuated limbs that reach out over great distances, perhaps alluding to the artist's desire to bring diverse cultures into synchronic unison. Sentences written in elegant script often suggest didactic messages, as in one circular canvas in which a rabbit-eared figure growing from a mountain holds in its fist a wide-winged bird straining to reach the horizon. No puedo retenerte ms is the inscribed legend--I can no longer hold you. It is a sentiment familiar to anyone who has tried in vain to restrain something that must be freed--a child, a lover, a secret--or conversely felt trapped by loving constraints. Though accessible on the surface, Bedia's art inevitably withholds layers that remain ambiguous. Why are such intimate sentiments set against astrological renderings of the night sky? Why are offerings left at certain drawings and installations? Even for the uninitiated, Bedia is a great teacher, using his tremendous graphic skill to engage viewers in a personal spiritual voyage.

Book Description
The Housecall Veterinarians' Manual is a business guide for veterinarians who operate a housecall service--a business where they go to pet owner's homes to perform requested veterinary services. The Manual offers a wide array of choices to accommodate many styles of practice. If you're a new business owner you want to know how to get clients, how to set up a home office, how to arrange your schedule, and what to charge. We explain how other housecall DVMs manage to restrain pets without help, and how to coordinate with a full-service hospital for those procedures that can't be done at the client's home.
Experienced practitioners will learn how other housecall DVMs run their practices, and how they handle some of the situations that are unique to a housecall practice. We'll discuss hiring help, optimizing your schedule, and determining your insurance needs. We'll save you money by reminding you of often-overlooked tax deductions, and give you tips on purchasing a computer and software.
The Housecall Veterinarian's Manual is the result of interviews with housecall veterinarians all over the country. Their experiences were combined with extensive research about small business to bring you everything you need to know in one book.
The housecall practitioner comes in several varieties. Which will you choose? The typical housecall veterinarian carries supplies in a vehicle but performs work on pets in their homes. Some housecall veterinarians spend all their time on housecalls and refer any complicated cases to a full- service hospital; some may lease space in a clinic in which they perform in-hospital procedures (such as surgery) themselves; others work out of a "base" clinic and conduct housecalls only part of the time.
A mobile practitioner travels to the client's home, but performs work in a mobile "clinic," usually a form of motor home converted into an exam room/laboratory. The large animal practitioner usually drives a pickup or large vehicle with refrigerator, running water, supplies and equipment in a self- contained unit.
Both housecall and mobile practitioners can work part time or full time. They can work either as employees or can be self-employed. This manual is directed mainly at the self-employed housecall practitioner with an office in the home. However, the information here is equally useful for the DVM with a primary hospital who wants to start housecalls, for the mobile veterinarian who has a "clinic on wheels," or for the large animal mobile practitioner.
A variety of ideas are presented in the workbook; use the ones you like and keep the rest in the back of your mind for the future. There is not one "right" way to run your housecall practice, but you will be better prepared if you have a bank of ideas to handle any situation that might arise.

Book Description
This volume presents in English translation the Slavonic version of Josephus Flavius' Jewish War, long inaccessible to Anglophone readers, according to N.A. Meèerskij's scholarly edition, together with his erudite and wide-ranging study of literary, historical and philological aspects of the work, a textological apparatus and commentary. The synoptic layout of the Slavonic and Greek versions in parallel columns enables the reader to compare their content in detail. It will be seen that the divergences are far more extensive than those indicated hitherto.

Book Description
In Up Where We Belong, Gail Thompson asked the students in a low performing school to be candid about their high school experiences. Using this information and relying on data from questionnaires and focus groups, Thompson discovered a huge gap in perception between how teachers and students view their experience of school. The book explores this disparity, and uncovers some of the reasons for students’ low achievement, apathy, and frustration. Most important, she offers vital lessons for transforming schools–especially for underachieving kids and students of color.

Book Description
"Anyone involved in preservice training for future and present classroom teachers should read this book. Both the content and context of the book are practical, timely, and necessary as our country and classrooms become more diverse."
Michele Dean, Principal
Montalvo Elementary School, Ventura, CA
Raise school attendance, reduce dropout rates, and improve academic performance of Latino students!
Often marginalized by poverty, linguistic isolation, or prejudice, Latino students face many academic obstacles. And while research has shown that parental involvement plays a key role in academic achievement, most schools have failed to modify their parent involvement programs to address social and cultural realities of Latino families.
Involving Latino Families in Schools provides tools and strategies for including Latino parents in developing sustained academic improvement. Sharing numerous first person success stories, author Concha Delgado Gaitan stresses three conditions of increased parental participation: connecting to families, sharing information with parents, and supporting continued parental involvement.
Offering easily applied techniques for cultivating communication, this practical handbook examines
- Latino families and their educational aspirations for their children
- The communication systems needed between schools and Latino families
- How Latino families can assist their children at home
- Techniques to foster Latino parent involvement
- How to organize schoolwide parent involvement programs
Through suggested activities, case examples, and vignettes, the author provides insights and instruction for planning, designing, and implementing parental participation programs that enhance the classroom curriculum and effectively engage Latino students.
Designed primarily for elementary and secondary school principals and teachers, this innovative text is also an indispensable resource for district-level administrators.
Customer Reviews:
A Contribution to the Education Community.......2007-03-05
I find this book to be timely due to the increasing number of Latino families in the education system. This book helps the reader understand the possibilities of intergrating Latino families by using real life examples from her work in the community. My collegues and I have found it to be a contribution to the education community
Content is good - Writing is BAD.......2007-01-18
I'm amazed that a book can be so important and yet be written so poorly. The content is almost overshadowed by the pedantic, fragmented, toe-curlingly dull writing. Read it. Take away the message. Hold your nose.
Don't wait... run to get this great book!.......2005-08-01
I am on the editorial review board for the National Association of Elementary School Principals and was happily assigned to read and review this book. With over two thirds of my students English Language Learners (Latino), I hoped I would find some "gems" that would make our school more inviting to parents who would in turn help us by becoming more involved.
Within the first pages of this book, I was advised by Gaitan that this will not be a set recipe for involving your Latino parents. But even better... this book gives you the understandings and tools you need to develop a parental involvement program that meets "your" populations' needs.
This wonderful book, that highlights the points made in each chapter in boxes, distinguishes between elementary and secondary (or both) concepts, and uses case studies to demonstrate points, is a quick read that you will look forward to picking back up each day.
I will definitely be implementing ideas that I gleaned from this book. In fact, I have ordered the book for my entire faculty. It's simply superb.

Book Description
The Latina/o population constitutes the largest racial and ethnic minority group in the U.S. and is disproportionately under-represented in college and in graduate programs.
This is the first book specifically to engage with the absence of Latinas/os in doctoral studies. It proposes educational and administrative strategies to open up the pipeline, and institutional practices to ensure access, support, models and training for Latinas/os aspiring to the Ph.D.
The under-education of Latina/o youth begins early. Given that by twelfth grade half will stop out or be pushed out of high school, and only seven percent will complete a college degree, it is not surprising so few enter graduate studies. When Latina/o students do enter higher education, few attend those colleges or universities that are gateways to graduate degrees. Regardless of the type of higher education institution they attend, Latinas/os often encounter social and academic isolation, unaffordable costs, and lack of support.
This historic under-representation has created a vicious cycle of limited social and economic mobility. There is a paucity of the Latina/o faculty and leaders whom research shows are essential for changing campus climate and influencing institutions to adapt to the needs of a changing student body. As a result, Latina/o graduate students often have few role models, advocates or mentors, and limited support for their research agendas.
By reviewing the pipeline from kindergarten through university, this book provides the needed data and insights to effect change for policy makers, administrators, faculty, and staff; and material for reflection for aspiring Latina/o Ph.D.s on the paths they have taken and the road ahead.
The book then addresses the unique experiences and challenges faced by Latina/os in doctoral programs, and offers guidance for students and those responsible for them. Chapters cover issues of gender and generational differences, the role of culture in the graduate school, mentorship, pursuing research, and professional development opportunities for Latina/os.
The book closes with the voices of by Latina/o students who are currently pursuing or recently completed their doctoral degree. These narratives describe their cultural and educational journeys, providing insight into their personal and professional experiences. These stories bring alive the graduate experience for anyone interested in successful recruitment, retention, and graduation of Latina/o doctoral students – an inspiration and guidance to those aspiring to the doctorate.

Manufacturing Hope and Despair : The School and Kin Support Networks of U.S.-Mexican Youth (Sociology of Education Series, No. 9)
ASIN: 1593320639 |
Book Description
A critical issue facing U.S. schools is the persistent disparity in achievement between racial/ethnic groups. The achievement gap is particularly pronounced for Mexican-Americans. By employing mixed-methods research techniques, Read links emergent literature on social capital with research on student mobility to investigate student performance among Mexican-American and non-Latino White adolescents. Findings underscore the prevalence of student mobility, particularly among Mexican-origin youth, and its impingement on both the availability and convertibility of the resources embedded in their social networks. Results also suggest that minority and non-minority students fortify social ties in different ways, and that these differences have implications for the educational utility of social capital.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent biography of a great actor.......2006-10-12
Although this is considered to be juvenile literature, the author does a top-notch job of looking at Quinn's career and life. This biography looks at his multifacted talent as actor, writer, and artist. There is a lot of solid information on Quinn's commitment to continually improving his acting, especially in mastering "method acting." The book also surveys Quinn's movement from screen actor to stage actor. Most importantly, this book surveys Quinn's work in fighting the prevalent racism that he faced within Hollywood. By mastering his acting (some have viewed Quinn as selfish for being more concerned about his acting than the actual film product or working relationships with other actors) this formidable actor was able to challenge the sterotyping and typecasting that were forced on him in his early career. Altogether this is a very intriguing biography.
