Unexpectedly good read.......2001-07-31

Cameron's approach beats the other guidebooks in its up to date assessment of the country's politics and history as it relates to each of the regions you plan on visiting. Relevant sidebar info is sprinkled throughout the book to provide the reader with something other than the usual monotonous listings of hotels, restarants, and places to visit--though she knows her stuff here as well. This book is the most currently published of all the other titles out there.

Sometime modern media are less than they appear.......2001-06-13

I am cardiologist and teacher on human auscultation. I bought the CD because I thought I could learn some more on auscultation in general. I was deeply dissappointed and am outright angry because the high price is not justified at all. The content does not supply a minimum level of knowledge for students of clinical examination be it human or veterinary doctors. I would expect also more profound insight for the expert reader. If auscultation in general is just desribed at the beginners level the true value of it may never become clear to the beginner. Apart from auscultation a CD or book on clinical examination of the horse would be more instructive. An expert knows that major clues to the diagnosis of diseases of the cardio-circulatory signs can be derived from peripheral or indirect signs. Focus on auscultation alone is like trying to see three-dimensionally with one eye. There does not apparently exist a didactic concept as presumptions are made which at the low level of readers addressed are not allowed (see grading of mumurs). In the day and age of modern media I would have expected better animations on heart and valvular movements etc. which would make the matter much more descriptive. At least a more detailed bibliography would have been helpful. I would prefer a well written book with good explanations of clinical signs on the basis of current knowledge in physiology and pathophysiology as in J. Constants "Bedide Cardiology". This in depth approach requires time the author obviously did not have. Sometimes new media pretend that they are better than old books. This is not always true, too bad for the money.

The echocardiography images in this book are of such good quality that they alone justify buying the book. Generally the text is concise and informative, giving up to the minute information in many areas of equine cardiology.

2 minor criticisms: Firstly, the information currently known about heart rate variability in the horse (and other species) is so slight that it probably did not justify its own chapter. Secondly, little to no information is given regarding support of the cardiovascular system during intensive care of horses - this is an emerging field of more relevance to day to day treatment of horses than heart rate variability.

A Tremendous Novel of Great Importance!.......2000-02-11

Jimmy Santiago Baca's "Working in the Dark" is a novel of extreme importance. Baca gives life and voice to imprisoned people who because of their ethicity, language, culture, and imprisonment have ben reducaed to cultural and social marginality by the dominant white culture and by those foriegn to Southwestern culture. "Voices From the Dark" is a must read for students of Chicano culture and the Southwest. It is a modern classic which may not be realized as such for decades to come!

" Working In The Dark " by Jimmy Santiago is a full- blown self portrait of survival. It's as much a trip through the mind- jail of Baca's disadvantages and a tossed past as the tale of an autodidact who longs to save himself- through words. Jimmy is a young man working in a hospital on the night shift. Most of the time he is working all by himself, and he always hears weird sounds coming from all over the hospital. Jimmy consider himself to be in a gang in his younger days and as he grows older, he becomes a man and does not want anything to do with a gang.

This book will have a great influence on Mexican American men and women because alot of them in this world are gang members and do not realize how much trouble they are getting themselves into. For instance Jimmy knew he would get in trouble with the law if he kept hanging out with gang members all of his life. All gang members should read " Working In The Dark". "Working In The Dark" is the best book I ever read written by an Mexican American author.
