    Book Description

Hawaii reveals her remarkable true nature, sometimes, to those who venture beyond tourism's mai tai veil in search of reality in this legendary Pacific haven. Discovering Hawaii is likely to be a lifetime labor of love, not easily accomplished during a two-week vacation. Yet insights do reward those travelers who approach the Islands and their people with open minds and hearts, humor, and humility, even if the encounters are brief. Travelers' Tales: Hawaii, edited by Rick and Marcie Carroll, whose own combined experiences in the Hawaiian Islands exceed three decades, presents a spectrum of such insights about Hawaii by articulate travelers and resident story tellers.

This book features personal stories by many different contributors, ranging from new voices to well-known authors such as John McPhee, Jan Morris, Jim Houston, Paul Theroux, Maxine Hong Kingston, Rick Bass, and Barbara Kingsolver. They include veteran travel writers, first-time visitors, long-time kama'Aina residents and native Hawaiians. Their stories reveal Hawaii in a way no book has done before and explain some reasons why millions have continued to travel to the globe's most remote islands over the centuries in search of "paradise."

5 out of 5 stars Anyone who loves the Hawaiian islands will love this book........1999-11-20

This is more of a suggestion for reading rather than a review: read the book from beginning to end because the editors have done a splendid job of organizing the essays to present a coherent and colorful view of Hawaii. I don't know of a better contemporary look into what has attracted tourists to the islands since the first Polynesians arrived. While not exactly a travel guide, it is a map for how one might travel. As a cultural anthropologist, I enjoyed hearing the many voices telling the stories of this Pacific crossroads. The book belongs to the best tradition of the Hawaiian impulse to talk story.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Not getting what you expect.......2007-07-15

Published 21 years ago, this reference to a rapidly changing category of data (shortline railroads) is woefully out of date. Worse, as advertised, buyers assume they are getting up to date information. Far from it. Kalmbach Publishing should be embarrassed to even offer it without a date on the cover.

3 out of 5 stars Dated and missing things.......2007-01-05

The short-line world has changed quite a bit in the years since publication. It's time for an update. What the guide does provide is interesting and generally accurate. Edward A. Lewis is perhaps the countries best authority on the subject and has managed several shortlines for many years. I suspect the problems of the book come from Kalbach trying to make it too small - it's glove box format. I'd rather have more information in an 81/2 x 11 format. It has locomotive rosters, capsule histories and other data. What is missing is train operations. Knowing this changes, perhaps the next edition should have an accompanying database of this information, updated by users as it changes. Another missing item are maps. As another reviewer has noted, the photographs could be better.

    3 out of 5 stars Black-N-White Pix; 1955??.......2003-01-11

if a train watcher of any kind you need this book but the black and white pix, or lack of many pix as well as lack of any maps at all shows a distinct lack of effort by Kalmbach; very dissappointing

4 out of 5 stars Great on data and pictures - maps are sorely lacking.......2000-05-30

American Shortline Railway Guide is a great help for any train buff. Over 500 short lines are described: history, current status, number of engines (some lines with full listing), cars, as well as address of owner and radio frequencies. I especially liked the many pictures accompanying the text. There is really one drawback only: The book does not contain any maps. You will need a train atlas or a Rand Mc Nally on the side, unfortunately. Other interesting details are lists of abandoned and non-operating lines as well as addresses of ownerships companies. A must-have for US train buffs, especially in conjunction with the Train-Watchers Guide to North American Railroads (also by George W. Drury).

    1 out of 5 stars DATED MATERIAL.......2002-04-04

I had to return the book. The material was several year's old and thus very dated. The index was also in very bad shape. Many of the entries were not indexed properly making it diffcult to do research. This book needs a major update and a good copy editor to review it.

5 out of 5 stars How did they do it?.......2002-03-07

I work in the publishing industry, and I was impressed by the layout of this book. No wasted space just the facts M'am. Must have been a lot of work to collect all the data on these companies and clean it up for presentation in this comprehensive volume. If you're thinking of getting involved in any franchise operation, you owe it to yourself to own this book. I hope there will be a second edition soon. Oh, and don't forget to check out Roger Rule's other books on franchising and 20th Century Winchester Repeating Arms. ;-)

5 out of 5 stars The Best Franchise Book on the Market.......2000-03-16

This is a big book and undoubtedly the best on the market for finding facts about franchises in general and any one franchise in particular. It is full of suggested web sites, but I found more information in this one book, on franchises, than I could gather from the Internet after surfing around for two weeks on the information highway. If you want to know the cheapest start-up costs for any franchise, one table shows them in order from the least expensive to the most. And there's similar tables for comparisons in franchise fees, franchise royalties, advertising royalties, and scads of others. And if you want to look up McDonald's, you find Burger King, Wendy's, and all the others compared together. Nothing has been on the market like this, in a book, that I've ever found, and I was in the franchise business for over ten years. It's better than the Bond book.

This book is a great starting place for beginning manga artists such as myself. It gives real in-depth information and photos to give the artist/reader a good idea of what features should ideally look like. It gives an awesome starting point for poses and features, and even a little background information. There are sections for young, teenage, and adult males AND females, including sections on specific features. I'm thrilled to have made this purchase, and I recommend it! Especially to beginners.

I gave this guide to my grandson, age 12, for a summer project. He said to give it 5 stars. He has produced some exceptional pictures. Even took it with him for a one week camping trip. Kudos to John Layman.

                    3 out of 5 stars Not what I needed.......2006-05-24

This book is okay for beginner, so it was a little to basic for what I was looking for. If you've never been introduced to drawing Manga before, then this book is good for you. It vaguely goes over different nose styles (personally it could've done the same with eyes) and it could have gone over action and poses more, but again, I'd recommend this book for a beginner.

This is a good manga book if you want to be able to make manga comic books, make proportianal bodies and have basic training in making little creatures! It also explains difference between Japanese and American. By the way if your a beginner its fine for you, but if you want to understand well, you might need little experience.

                    (Complete Idiot's Guide to)
                    by Frank Fradella

When I review DRAWING books, the first question I ask is, "Is this for BEGINNERS?" Because I feel an obligation to the book buyer to provide good information, and also to prevent a beginning student from being discouraged, and feeling that they are defective, or ....just cannot get it.

It does not seem to occur to the buyer that many authors just cannot teach. Instinct seems to suggest that that if book gets published, it must contain credible instruction by someone who knows how to teach. It may seem surprising that this is just not so. Perhaps as many as half of all drawing books are not very good for beginners. I know. I've gotten familiar with most of the books on the market, and I know what I'm looking for in good instruction.

For example, take the current text under consideration. Upon opening the book and flipping through the pages, there is a small amount of illustration on most of the pages, but primarily, the communication is through "wordy" explanations. This gives the entire book a "cold" feel. I do not doubt that all the usual "technical" data is there, but good beginner drawing books teach by showing DRAWINGS, not by wordy paragraph after wordy paragraph.

There are so many books on the market that make learning HOW-TO-DRAW less intimidating and a less intellectual activity that they should be sought out.

Finally, the reader should know that the better books typically cost between $7.95 and $12.95. Paying the list price for this book, $18.95 should cause hesitation.

5 out of 5 stars The Book for People who say they can't Draw.......2006-10-14

I've been waiting for a book like this forever. Seriously, this is THE BOOK for anyone who wants to draw but is afraid they have no ability. Author Fradella provides tons of illustrative examples with a great sense of humor to teach the basics ideas of how to draw.(Which is a refreshing change from all these books on drawing that are too word intensive and don't provide enough illustrated examples, something any book on creating art needs.)
Fradella offers encouragement in reminding us all"Michaelangelo sucked. Davinci sucked too. Man they both stunk on ice! Then they made something worth putting up in your bathroom." By letting us know that even the great masters were lousy starting out, that no one is born being talented with a pencil.

Fradella makes learning to draw fun, which is what it's truly all about.
Because if you don't enjoy creating art, there's no point to it.
If there were a rating high enough, I'd give this one 10 stars.

3 out of 5 stars Not for Southern Gardens...........2005-06-30

In the May/June 2005 issue of THE AMERICAN GARDENER, Jo Ann Gardener wrote a rather good article about her favorite herbs for medicinal and culinary purposes. Reading her article and subsequently her book HERBS IN BLOOM I realized her medicinal knowledge was mostly gleaned from books, not hands on experience. The article includes the "cream" of what is found in the book, so I could have done without the book, but I am a book-addict, particularly a garden book addict, so I bought the book. I like the inventory she provides covering the herbs she has apparently grown in her own garden, but as she gardens in NY (and formerly New England), her ideas are of limited use for one who lives and gardens in the upper South, on an urban lot. She doesn't spend much time on "herbs in pots" which is the way I must grow many of my herbs, but she does have a nice section on Valerian, which I shall never again confuse with Centranthus. I wish I had known sooner rather than later that Valerian required moist conditions and sun. Unfortunately, I planted it where the sun shines all day, but where it grows relatively dry. So I discovered the hard way, that not all herbs like dry conditions, or moist shady ones for that matter. This is a nice, but slightly outdated book. Look for the works of Rosemary Gladstar and Deb Soule for more information about the medicinal properties of herbs.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Herbs for the Garden.......2000-10-04

With this book you will read and read again.  What better compliment can a book and its author receive?

The emphasis here is on pizzazz for the garden. But, it is not fussy plants with difficult requirements, Ms. Gardner is suggesting, rather the uncomplicated perfection of blooming herbs. What could be easier than herbs? Plants that are disregarded as weeds by the unknowing, but prized by those who value their tenacious and giving nature. And, since Ms. Gardner gardens in Nova Scotia, a zone 4 climate, she is very familiar with the word difficult.

Indeed one of the aspects of this book that makes it valuable is her familiarity with colder zones. Another plus is that she is truly a gardener. How do we know? Because only a gardener would describe Catmint as smelling like Cinnamon. This book is full of personal revelations that come only from experience. Experience that we can benefit from by reading this book.

Eighty herbs are profiled for their value in beautifying the landscape or garden. There are many photos of her selections, including photos of more unusual herbs like Dittany. Also, while discussing Oregano, for example, she mentions numerous kinds, which brings the number of herbs discussed to around 700.

Herbs in Bloom: a simply perfect idea.

5 out of 5 stars HERBS IN BLOOM a perfect complement to LIVING WITH HERBS.......1999-01-26

"The layout, illustrations and photographs are marvelous; the font and leading easy to read; the use of bluish-lavender for the boxed quotations and plant names not only attractive but easy on the eyes; the common name cross-reference a special boon. There are many flowers I would never have thought of as herbs, but the concise definition of herbs in your preface cleared up my previous misconceptions...HERBS IN BLOOM is a perfect complement to LIVING WITH HERBS."

                                Book Description

If Greek was the language by which Palestinian Jews talked to the Empire, then Aramaic and Hebrew were the languages by which they talked to themselves. In this context, what resulted when they translated the Hebrew Bible into Aramaic? Moments of the inner Jewish conversation about the meaning and relevance of Hebrew Scriptures frozen in Aramaic renditions.

The scholars in this volume use these Aramaic translations, known as the Targums, like dioramas, peering through them to glimpse these moments in the development of Judaism and its theology. Dedicated to Ernest G. Clarke, the essays explore the variety of interpretations preserved in the different Targums from the Second Temple and post-Temple periods during which they were composed.

                                    Book Description

Baudelaire once wrote, "Does one show the audience all the rags and cosmetics, the pulleys and chains, the corrections and scribbled proofs - in a word, all the horrors that make up the sanctuary of art?" Charles Henri Ford does just that in these provocative photographs he shot from 1930, as a young man in Mississippi, through the 1960s, when he navigated the rarified realms of the queer-tinged avant-garde. These candid images include Ford's notorious autoerotic self-portraits, along with photographs of Gertrude Stein, Djuna Barnes, Truman Capote, and Tennessee Williams, as well as other famous friends and lovers. Also here are his gorgeous images of Mexico, Cuba, Tahiti, France, and England, adding to this remarkable collection by a renowned surrealist poet, novelist, and editor, documenting several decades of bohemian culture.

A Dream for Gilberto is the true story of one man's dreams and his epic struggle to fulfill them. Born into the direst of third world poverty, sleeping on the streets of a South American city, Gilberto, while yet a boy, absorbed the basic lesson of his life: that only by clinging to his dreams, no matter how irrational they appeared to others, would he be able to survive.

Gilberto's earliest dreams were of his family, destroyed when he was a young child. He spent much of his youth in a search for his mother and lost siblings. Another dream was to immigrate to the United Statesan impossibility until the day a bizarre circumstance again changed his life.

4 out of 5 stars Quick read that lingers long after the the book is over........1999-05-24

Simple prose that delivers a quick read reminscent of Hemingway's crafting. Every word counts and every sentence leads effortlessly to the next. This is the story of Gilberto, a real person, and his journey from depths of poverty, abuse and ignorance that middle class Americans can only understand third or fourth hand. Gilberto not only succeeded in every way (education, middle class respectability, an American citizenship) but he pulled an entire family back with him. The ending is bitter sweet. Entirely unpredictable...but satisfying. Disney did not influence this writer. The author views Gilberto's life from a 1950's post WWII perspective of American arrogance filtered again through our 1990's revisionist (and more mature) perspective. Fascinating. An almost four dimensional approach. Great story, well told and should find a building audience over time as word spreads about this remarkable book.

5 out of 5 stars A book for all Americans.......1999-05-08

Here is a book the will give every American a good look at what life might have been like had he or she not had the good fortune to be born in this country and a better understanding of the people all around us who are brave enough to find their way to our shores and make the supreme effort to become an American. Billie Young tells the story well and I found it interesting from beginning to end.
