Offers nothing of substance.......2007-05-02

I believed that the Insiders' Guide to Baltimore was a travel guide when I bought it. Unfortunately, it is an odd hybrid of travel book, relocation guide, and general source of information about the Baltimore area. As is often the case with a book that tries to do too much, it doesn't excel at any of them.

All the basic information is here including entries places to stay, eat, and shop. Local attractions are also covered in addition to a chapter on day trips. One problem is that these entries tend to be shorter than you would find in most guides. I also would have appreciated more of a critique of the attractions. All the descriptions read like something out of a marketing brochure from the operators so it's very hard to know what is most worth your time. Similarly, I found no critical comments of any kind in the descriptions of restaurants and hotels when clearly some will be better than others.

The truth is that if you want a guidebook to Baltimore, you have very few choices. Still, I would probably recommend using the web to gather information on the few real tourist attractions (like the outstanding National Aquarium) and accommodations and save your money rather than purchase this book. If you want happy-talk that sounds like it came from the local Chamber of Commerce, you can always to the actual Chamber's web site and get it for free.

Excellent Companion for our recent Visit!!.......2005-09-06

My husband and I just returned from our trip to Baltimore, and might I say, I don't know what we would have done without this book! We went to attractions recommended by the book, and we were not disappointed. I love the way that the book gives you the kind of information that you need and leaves out the subsidiary parts. The book also had an invaluable map that showed the main streets that we wanted. We chose restaurants based not only on price, and neighborhood, but also the "vibe," that was very well described by the authors.

I saw this book at Barnes and Noble and thought it was too big and complex for a labor day weekend in Baltimore, but my mother surprised us by sending this version via Amazon. I am so glad she did. It was so easy to understand and really helped with a trip that we wanted to have a "winging it" feel, instead of a very "planning it" feel.

We liked this so much that I have just ordered the version of my own hometown to "explore" the parts of our own city that would be interesting to visitors.

Hats off to "The insiders guide" folks!

Great Book On The Baltimore Area.......2005-09-03

THE INSIDERS' GUIDE TO BALTIMORE is a great book, even if some of the radio station info is outdated. It features detailed information on where the best neighborhoods and dining are, as well as mentioning several great shopping malls. The only other problem, besides outdated radio station listings, is a lack of discussion of the planned Baltimore suburb of Columbia, which is really a city of its own. Other than that, though, this book is essential.

Then she'll know where all of the hot spots are. Specky will be looking down from doggie afterlife jealous of Aunt Wendy's cool new life in Balto. Great guide for learning atonamy, but it is NOT intended to be a kids book; it is for serious artists.......2007-03-10

I'm not a kid, I'm just too lazy to sign up for amazon.

If you've ever used a How to Draw disney book, you'll recognize the similar steps here, which is a good thing. But to those who have been complaining that it is too complicated for kids, read this: Bambi and the Little Mermaid weren't drawn by kids, and niether was Zelda. Furthermore adding to the ridiculousness of these aruments is that Zelda isn't even a kid's game to start with, it's VERY violent. Back on topic, It takes a serious artist years to learn these techniques.

This is a very nice drawing book for those interested in the characters. But be prepared to practice for many months. That's what it takes to draw cartoons, unlike portraits.

I like this book a lot, but foir each charecter, there are only one pose. I love legend of zelda, so it automaticly gets 5 stars. but i reduced it to 4 cuz it only had the following:zelda, link, saria, ganon, deku scrub, link in a pose, a garon, and a tektite. i realy like twighlight princess, and wind waker, but it only had ocarina of time (also a great game). I think you should buy it if you want a blast from the past, or u r a total nerd(i'm a nerd :]).

Way too short........2003-04-29

What I was hoping for with this book was details. The inking was really thick, so the really fine details were hard to distinguish, making my purchase for that sake fruitless.
Also, the number of characters in the book is a piddling 13, and a number of those aren't characters, but rather monsters from Ocarina of Time. While they are marginally interesting in their own right, I think the space would be better used on more important characters.
The book's quite cheap, so you may want it as a guide to the rough proportions of a few characters. It's not worth much more than its cover price, though.

Fantastic storytelling about the Almonte family... .......2006-05-06

I just finished reading "Muddy Cup" and feel like I know the Almonte family personally. That could be because I'm familiar with the Dominican experience, my wife emigrated from Santo Domingo at age 16, and I also grew up in the predominantly Dominican Washington Heights neighborhhod. But even if I didn't, the book is so detailed and intimate that someone who has never met a Dominican will feel like they truly have. Barbara Fischkin set out to do a piece for New York Newsday on the Almonte family. The Almontes are from a very small village, known as el campo, called Camu outside of Puerto Plata. She met the mother, Roselia, and her three children( Cristian, Elizabeth and Mauricio ) at the US consulate in Santo Domingo. That newspaper piece ended up as the book "Muddy Cup." Mrs. Fischkin became close with the family, including many relatives, and followed their journey from the small village to Santo Domingo and eventually to Queens, NY. The Almonte story is like many other Dominican families who came before and after them. The youngest child, Mauricio, who is know studying to be Spanish professor in Tennessee of all places, is the child who I could relate to the most. He didn't speak a word of English when he arrived in Queens at age 11, and now is a very educated, English professor in the making. That is amazing to me because the Dominicans, like many other immigrant groups get sterotyped all the time. They are all uneducated drug dealers, or the ones who "made it" are all baseball players. Like the Irish in the last century were all called potato eating, job stealing parasites. Dominicans happen to be the largest( if they are not they are almost there ) Hispanic group in NYC. They have made their presence felt all over the Northeast and beyond, and althougn this book was written in the early/mid nineties, it reflects Dominican experience of today. More have arrived and are arriving every day. Guillermo Linares was elected the first Dominican City ouncilman back in 1991 and many others are entering politics as well. Mrs. Fischkin did a fantastic job of telling their story and it just so happens that her family, Ukranian Jewish immigrants almost a century before, took the same journey as the Almontes. The only difference is that they traveled across the ocean on a boat, while the Almontes traveled on an airplane. I have read quite a few stories about Dominican immigrants and this is by far the best and most heartfelt. I look foward to reading more of Barbara Fischkins work as it is apparent that she is a gifted and entertaining writer.

Barbara Fischkin tells a universal story in her chronicle of the Almonte family's coming to America, the painful choices and formidable obstacles they face, their setbacks and successes as they leave behind their beloved Dominican Republic. Muddy Cup is full of rich detail, compassion, and a narrative focus that makes it read like a novel. Treating a little-covered topic with depth and insight, this is the way journalism should be done. There are more than one million Dominicans living in the United States, and Fischkin does a wonderful job of giving faces and names to a group of people who are increasingly visible and vocal in this country. Most important, she shows how similar their hopes and dreams are to those of the many immigrant groups who made America.

Not What I Wanted.......2006-07-18

I am considering doing some backpacking in the desert. I wanted a book that contained some mixture of desert hiking advice, suggested routes, gear selection tips, and ancedotes.

This book does contain those things, sort of, but I was disapointed. It suffers from a lack of focus and organization. The author wanders between stories of the American Indian tribes, the history of European exploration and his modern day trips. In more skillful hands this might been an interesting interweaving of past and present but it fell flat for me.

The part of the book that I enjoyed the most was the two tales in the introduction. In those tales, the author sounds like an interesting person. The most useful thing that I found in the book was the author's rule-of-the-thumb for estimating the amount of water needed for a desert hike.

In his discussion of the usefulness of water stills and how hard it is to get water from cacti, the author lets it slip that he has taught desert survival, the book would be better if he had elaborated on that more.

All-in-all, I'm glad that I didn't pay full price.

A dense and fascinating study of food in the Confederacy.......2000-02-28

When I picked up this book, I had not studied the Civil War since high school, and knew little more than the basics. After reading it, I have a much more vibrant picture of the Confederacy, and especially of the reasons why the South lost. In view of what Moore reveals, I'm astounded the Confederacy survived as long as it did! Moore has done a masterful job of primary and obscure-secondary source research (he quotes the primary sources extensively, adding much interest to the narrative), piecing together the intricate puzzle of subsistence in the Confederacy. The influences on and factors affecting subsistence permeate the entire history of the war, encompassing physical geography, land exhaustion, rife speculation, egotistical generals, corrupt officials, dithering beaurocrats, rickety railroads, salt mines, currency devaluation, careless strategists, hog cholera, personal vendettas, blockade runners, vicious media, and a slew of other factors that wove the complex web of failure.

In the course of the book, familiar characters such as Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and southern generals Beauregard, Bragg, and Johnston are fleshed out, offering the reader either new appreciation or condemnation. Northrop himself is presented as a man completely honest and dutiful, though entirely lacking personal charm. He was a man with an impossible job, frustrated at nearly every turn, and then generally blamed for each shortage or failure. After reading this book, the reader cannot help but sympathize with Northrop, as well as understand his plight and the plight of the South.

My only complaints with the book were that I often got lost in the plethora of names; a repetition of the individual's role whenever he or she is mentioned would have helped, or perhaps a character list at the beginning of the book. Also helpful would have been a reference map encompassing the geography of the Civil War, for those of us who have forgotten those high school classes and can't recall exactly where Chancellorsville or Chickamauga are.

Overall, I found this a dense and fascinating book.

This instructor's guide is equally focused on quality improvement in a general sense as well as on 6-Sigma techniques.

It starts off with a module on course planning that lays out the curriculum and objectives. It then introduces 6-Sigma, followed by modules for improvement planning, problem solving, process management and common tools. Each module is, in my opinion, excellent. For example, improvement planning introduces quality function deployment (QFD) as a primary tool/technique. Problem solving gives a structured 5-step process that can be effectively used by anyone, regardless of their job or role, and the module on process management is where the 6-Sigma tools and techniques are introduced, along with design of experiments (Taguchi Technique), and an implementation plan. QFD is also more thoroughly covered in this module.

The final module covers most of the common TQM tools and techniques, which round out the knowledge and skill areas required by anyone responsible for supporting 6-Sigma at the worker through line manager levels.

Overall, this is a well written book that gives instructors a clearly defined outline for a syllabus and learning objectives.
