Fascinating Reading.......2005-07-10

I'm a homeschooled student (in 10th grade). I read this book as part of a course on early European history, and have also referred to it while studying the history of the English language. Most of the translations are very accessible to the modern reader on their own, and Mr. Crossley-Holland's insightful commentary clears up those which are more difficult or obscure. Anyone who has a serious interest in the literature and culture of the Anglo-Saxons will not be disappointed in this book.

beautiful renderings of the elegies.......2003-06-01

I bought this book in an old edition paperback form in Dublin because it contained the major elegies such as the Wanderer and the Seafarer. I ended up being extremely satisifed not only with the beautiful translation of the Wanderer, but with all of the selections and with Crossley-Holland's comments. I was very thrilled to meet him recently at a reading in Seattle, where he was promoting his Arthur trilogy. I'll have to check that out.

A Fine Sampler.......2000-05-27

Another gem of the Oxford World's Classics series, Crossley-Holland's anthology presents a generous selection of poetry and prose covering the major genres of Anglo Saxon Lit. All the famous stuff is here -- Seafarer, Wanderer, Battle of Maldon,etc -- including a very fine Beowulf translation that's highly readable without straying far from the literal meaning of the original. Plus riddles, laws, sections of the Chronicle -- quite enough to get a rounded picture of this fascinating literature, and all well translated. The scholarly notes are sparse but adequate for an intro-level text. If I could make one suggestion for improvement, it would be to add the Anglo-Saxon versions in a bilingual edition, so readers could have the sound and structure of the originals.

This book by Malcolm Brown is thoroughly researched and contains the most important of Lawrence's writings, aside from Seven Pillars. As Malcolm Brown is a well-known expert on TE Lawrence and on World War I, no other books on Lawrence's writings are as well selected for historical importance or for their revelation of Lawrence's military and literary genius. M. Brown himself has a special genius for understanding and communicating to us the importance of history in the most exciting writing style.

Too few Americans know about the fascinating Mass-Observation project initiated in England in 1937 (and coming to an end in the late 1940s) with the aim of documenting, without bias, the lives of ordinary people, typically through diary installments by volunteer contributors, and also through directives or questionnaires. Regular contributors included a Miss Pringle, aged 24, a teacher from Liverpool who had been responsible for helping to fit the schoolchildren with gas masks during the Munich crisis of 1938: "In the girls' department there were more cases of fright but the staff in both departments said how well-behaved and plucky the children had been. They also said how difficult it was to keep saying the same cheerful inanities and yet be fitting the children with equipment such as that. Some children thought that the gas was in the defense valve and said they could smell it. Actually it was the Izal used for disinfectant."

The Mass-Observation Archives are housed at the University of Sussex, and from these, editor Dorothy Sheridan has skillfully culled an engrossing selection of excerpts touching on women's attitudes and experiences during the war, including the class snobbery and racism that they unconsciously revealed. Although the project foundered after the war, giving way to commercially driven market research, the hundreds of thousands of pages of information (much still unread) generated by Mass-Observation are a priceless historical resource, as engaging as a stranger's diary or a letter left on the seat of a bus. --Regina Marler

This book lets you get to know the exciting and roudy Jack Russell Terrier. My wife and I purchased this book prior to purchasing our JRT. It was (and still is) a wonderful resource. Anything for grooming, training and enjoying your pup is in this book. The author also includes stories from her past ownership of many Jack Russells. Excellent book!

This is an excellent resource tool for Jack Russell terrier owners to folks who just happen to love the breed. A spirited, loving dog, the Jack Russell terrier more often than not makes for a very appealling family pet.

Jacks have an interesting history. Parson Jack Russell created the breed to be good mousers and hunting dogs in the late 19th century. Jacks are closely related to the fox terriers. In the intervening years, Jacks have gained popularity and fame. Jacks have starred in a number of recent movies and commericals. Dana Carvey starred with a Jack named Barkley in "Clean Slate" (Barkley also starred on several episodes of "Full House"). The popular TV sitcom "Frasier" has a Jack named Eddie (real name Moose and father to the Jack who starred in "My Dog Skip"). "Wishbone" is the most famous Jack to date. Recent coverage on this delightful breed has certainly helped boost their popularity as does this book.

We recently purchased a JRT named Lucky. I purchased this book beforehand and found it a great resource for us. Everything from the history of the breed to showing the breed. Great photographs!

I was very taken with the book. So much that I contacted Mary Strom and purchased one of her puppies. She was not only very helpful, but made sure I had every bit of information I needed to make my Jack Russell terrier happy and healthy. An excellent reference tool for the novice collector........1999-07-13

I acquired this book solely for its superb illustrations. Each piece is given its own, full-colour page, opposite which is a description, not only of its use to the society which produced it, but of the body, glaze, and decorative technique and style. I found much information therein which had been ignored by longer and heavier books on the subject of English ceramics. Also included with each description is a brief selection of titles which will ease further research. This is a beautiful little book (like all the Firzwilliam Museum Handbooks) which would make a very welcome gift for any ceramic historian or collector.

This Poole Needs a Bit of a Top-Up.......2001-11-01

On the whole Collecting Poole Pottery by Robert Prescott-Walker is a useful but flawed book. The written history gives a good "in a nut shell" account of the Poole company from the 1850's to the 1980's, while a section in the back titled 'Recent Trends and Developments' gives a little information on Poole in the nineties. It could however have included a bit more information on the Delphis range (OK that's my favourite) and have been a bit more systematic in its approach.

My main complaint lies with the photographs and how they are arranged and labelled. The order is roughly chronological but somewhat haphazard. On page 90 for instance we go from plates and pots of the 70's and 90's to seven pages of tiles in chronological order, to some pots and animals of the 20's through to 50's, and then on to some70's Delphis...why?. Would it not be better to just have a section on tiles, a section on 50's pottery, a section on Delphis and so on. Each section could have a series of well-labelled shots of typical Poole pottery of that era or range, including size\s and shape numbers.

I would have also liked a more comprehensive list of marks and at least some list of painters\ paintresses and their marks, particularly of the Delphis range. Delphis and Aegean have become highly collectable and in my humble opinion could have had a section to themselves.
