Book Description
Because of the great variety of problems which this genus presents to biologists, Oenothera belongs to the best-known genera of plants not used economically. This book summarizes today's knowledge of Oenothera's genetics and related fields like caryology and cytogenetics. It is further of great value for all those whose research topics are based on genetics, such as developmental and evolutionary biology.

"Encyclopedic in their historic, artistic and touristic detail." -- Conde Nast Traveler
Legend has it that as long as the ravens remain safe in the Tower of London, the stately city and the kingdom of England will not fall. Indeed, the country has survived much: the Norman Conquest, the Great Fire of 1666 and two World Wars. Still under the watchful eye of the Beefeaters, the ravens are safe and the stalwart city remains one of the most popular places in the world.
Find the traces of London's past in the chilling dungeons of the Tower -- which held many famous prisoners including Sir Walter Raleigh and two of Henry VIII's wives -- or at the Poet's Corner in Westminster Alley, a shrine to England's illustrious writers from Auden to Shakespeare. Explore the city's modern-day attractions on a journey through the markets on Portobello Road and enjoy a piping steak and kidney pie at the local pub. The Knopf Guide to London will teach you how Georgian townhouses were built and how Christmas pudding is made, as well as how to ride the Tube and take in the "Trooping of the Colour," when the Queen inspects the royal guards. It will guide you through the city's great museums including the Tate and National Gallery and take you on leisurely strolls through London's famous Hyde Park and Queen Mary's Garden.

Excellent Historical Guide.......2005-08-14
I recently purchased this guide before a trip to London and found the information about the city, its history, and the sights to be excellent. I really enjoyed reading about the historical sites as I was visiting them. I would note that the guides suggestions of places to eat and pubs should be only taken as suggestions as they are not the top spots to eat and drink in London.
Exceptional Beyond Words.......2000-06-25
First off: I have never been to London, at least not yet. I am a tremendous fan of these Knopf Guides, first buying them for some classes I took in travel school. My collection numbers 10.However, London is special. I dream of going there every day--this particular guide transported me there more than my own dreams could. The sections on architecture through the ages, "London Through the eyes of writers", and various other sections are finger-printed and thumbed and dog-eared. That just shows a person how I value the given information within. A MUST BUY!
An Architect's Perspective.......2000-04-23
During my recent visit to London, this book guided me through all the historical and modern architectural sites with accurate detailed information. I wish the author published a millennium issue of it.
Book Description
This opening fold-out contains a general map of London to help you visualize the 8 large districts discussed in this guide, and 4 pages of valuable information, handy tips and useful addresses.
Discover London through 8 districts and 8 maps
Westminster/ Whitehall
Covent Garden/ Soho/ Bloomsbury
City/ St Paul’s
Southwark/ Tower Bridge
Southbank/ Waterloo
Mayfair/ Marylebone
Chelsea/ South Kensington/ Belgravia
Kensington/ Notting Hill
For each district there is a double-page of addresses (restaurants — listed in ascending order of price — cafés, bars, tearooms, music venues and stores) followed by a fold-out map for the relevant area with the essential places to see (indicated on the map by a star *). These places are by no means all that London has to offer but to us they are unmissable. The grid-referencing system (
A B2) makes it easy for you to pinpoint addresses quickly on the map.
Transportation and hotels in London
The last fold-out consists of a transportation map and 4 pages of practical information that include a selection of hotels.
A thematic index lists all the sites and addresses featured in this guide.
Customer Reviews:
Very handy guide to carry with you........2007-05-11
We found this guide to be the one we carried with us every day. It has great maps and brief descriptions of key places, all of which are very useful as you move around the city. There is an index and a tube map in the back. Places to visit and see, shop and eat are described and located handily on various close up maps. This one fits in a purse or pocket, isn't big and bulky and can therefore be looked at discreetly. The pages are stiff enough not to rip on repeated use. Next time I travel, I'll check out similar guides to other cities.
Fantastic map!.......2006-07-16
As a first time European visitor with a 13 year old daughter towing me about, I decided to purchase no less than 8 travel books prior to going. Doing most of our travel on foot, bus, or via "the tube," I found that my "light weight is better" tourist transformation completed with us carrying only this book, the "Travelling around Your Tube and bus map" (tfl.gov.uk) and the little guide book from the folks at "The London Pass." Being middle aged and of little brain, and lesser eyesight, this book has easy to read, has larger than normal print on the maps, and The Tube guide handily in the back. On top of it all, it is small, weighs only 4.9 oz (138 g - sweat soaked) and contains an index with such entries as "Westminster Abbey." The only thing that could have made it better would be to make the Tube map in one piece. This minor inconvenience was easily overlooked once the Pimms had set in.
Give this one a pass.......2006-05-07
It seems like there are more guides to London than a person could count, but that means there are some substandard ones among them. This is one that offers very little. The main problem is that it lacks detail, and gives only a cursory explanation of the limited number of subjects that it covers. The maps are good, but that's really all this book has going for it. And since you can get good maps from other places, there's no need to buy this book just to have a map.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource for your upcoming trip!.......2007-04-20
So many great things about this book! It's small enough to fit in a day pack easily. Its size also makes it easy to consult inconspicuously. There's nothing like being the foolish tourist with the huge guide book or massive map. It is accurate and very easy to read. The content was very useful. There is one overview map that helps orient you to the overall layout of London. Then there are 8 detailed maps of different districts through out London. Last, there is a tube map. I highly recommend having this for your trip to London. I will certainly be purchasing more in this series for upcoming trips.
All You Need.......2006-08-20
I took many maps and books with me to London but the Knopf CityMap Guide was all I needed. It's hard board cover and small size made it easy to carry around with us. The city is divided into sections, with all the sites, shopping, and tube stops of each shown. It also shows which train stations to use when visiting locations outside of London (that can be tricky). A must have!
Indispensible for London tourists..........2006-01-06
We bought several London guidebooks and maps before our trip, and received free ones from our agent and the hotels we stayed at. The guide books were great for details on the sites and for reading back at the hotel, but this was a navigational savior.
It is about 5x7, and half an inch thick. Each neighborhood in London has a fold out map -- easy to read, with Tube lines and major attractions CLEARLY labeled. There are also suggestions for neighborhood restaurants, etc. The sturdy paper meant I wasn't struggling with a bulky, flimsy map. And it held up to the (incessant) rain.
This one stayed in my pocket the whole 4 days, and I promptly bought the NYC one on my next trip. I wish Knopf made MapGuides for some of the other cities I've visited since then (Boston, Toronto).
This was #1 out of the 5 books I had with me.......2005-05-01
I would say this was my most used book during my 8 days in London. It is very easy to use and small enough to fit in your day bag or even a large pocket. It is less conspicuous than using a full size or brochure size map. And the pages fold out and are more like thin cardboard so if you are using it in wind or even light rain it's still usable. It's large enough to read very easily as well. It also had map of the underground at the back which will be your lifeline in London. There were some explanations and descriptions of things to do/see/eat in London but pretty brief. I used a larger more in-depth guide for that. This was just extremely useful for map and directions out on the town. If I had to pick one of the 5 books I had with me it would have been this one.
I love this series!.......2004-09-08
My husband and I are stationed in Italy for two years and we're make the most of the travel opportunities. I bought a bunch of the Knopf CityGuides for cities we were likely to visit and we love them.
A full city map on the inside cover is divided up into 5-8, then each section is further mapped on a fold-out map made of heavy cardstock. The section maps are big and easy to read, and are marked with the most important sites in that area. Each site is briefly described with opening times and cost at the bottom. On the other side of each map is a list for that section of town of recommended restaurants, bars/music venues, and shopping sites in a few price ranges. I *love* these recommendations; they take you to non-touristy, excellent restaurants and stores.
The back inside cover includes subway maps and critical getting around information.
What is unique about these guides is that no matter which part of town you find yourself in, you can quickly identify something nearby to see, eat, buy, or enjoy.

Knopf City Guides: London is a slim and sleek pocket guide containing excellent maps for every listing. For those travelers who like someone else to do the legwork, the researchers have done an impressive job of condensing London into the things you need to know about: 96 restaurants, 45 nights out, 71 sights, 36 excursions, and 77 shops. Lots of full-color photos present sneak previews of the topics at hand. The "Further Afield" section covers "Around London," "Hampstead/Highgate," "Greenwich," "Kew/Richmond," "Hampton Court," "Windsor/Eton," and "Sports."
Descriptions are thorough and--when it comes to dining--enticing, as this excerpt indicates from the write-up on L'Oranger:
The cooking is some of the best in London. A starter might include ravioli of salmon with crab jus, main courses could be panaché of fish with tagliatelle, or shin of beef braised in red wine with garlic and herbs.
The restaurants presented cover a wide range of budgetary and culinary preferences. However, if you're watching how you spend your pounds, you'll want to research accommodations elsewhere--most of Knopf's choices are pricey. --Kathryn True

Customer Reviews:
Buy This One; Buy 'Em All.......2003-02-04
This is another first-rate collection of deco commercial art that you wouldn't see elsewhere, and it proves that graphic design was in a kind of golden age at the time. The work here is rich and appealing, as in all the books of the series, and if you're a designer, you'll find it very inspiring as well, and a handy reference tool.
The book itself is a fairly small paperback, though very nicely printed on glossy paper. The work inside this and other volumes in the series certainly justifies a larger, hardcover treatment.

Book Description
Over 350 color photographs of European majolica illustrate this book - but don't be fooled, this is not merely a book of photographs. The author has included detailed textual treatments of all identifiable makers of majolica, as well as a value guide for all pieces shown in the book. Useful information on the location, preservation, and collecting of European majolica is also provided. European Majolica shows the reader how to identify majolica produced in the German states, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Poland, and explains the combinations of initials and numbers which have baffled collectors for years, enabling the reader to properly identify the maker of his or her majolica.
