Wonderful art, fascinating commentary.......2006-06-05

_Knightsbridge_ by Keith Parkinson is a book of his fantasy art. It contains 51 plates of his paintings. Of those, most were used as fantasy novel covers or game covers. There are also some smaller miscellaneous plates of paintings & sketches, and a couple of paintings that were done just for fun.

I have a number of fantasy art books, and if I could keep only one, it would be this one. Parkinson's art is very detailed & realistic. His facial expressions & body language are quite good. As evidenced both by the paintings themselves and his commentary, he goes out of his way to get good visual references. Technically, he is very adept and uses value control, rhythm, diagonal lines, forced perspective, and a number of other visual tricks to make sure the viewer's eye is directed where it needs to be.

His commentary about how he goes about his paintings is worth the price of the book alone. The section at the beginning about compositional thumbnails was very intriguing and thought-provoking. For book covers, he almost always reads the manuscripts before beginning his drawing. This results in a very good match between his cover art and the book itself, both in subject & tone. He was the cover artist for the Elenium trilogy by David Eddings, and his comment about the themes on the cover of the middle book ("There are three things pictured here that have returned after once being banished.") demonstrates how thoroughly he understood the book itself.

Parkinson also states that he likes drawing and painting dragons, armor, architecture, and wooded scenes (among other things). In all these cases, his enjoyment shows and the subject matter is done both beautifully and realistically.

If you like fantasy art, get this book. You won't be disappointed.

Definately an essential resource for any fan or artist involved with the fantasy genre. Also look for his more recent book, Kingsgate. His work is in a class of it's own.

Truly Amazing.......2002-06-05

This book is incredible. Keith Parkinson is a master with capturing both action scenes and poses. The flow of movement and expressive faces in his art are some of the best. His images are very creative and inspiring. Anyone who loves art and fantasy should definately own one of these books.

Keith Parkinson is perhaps one of the handful of fantasy artists on par with the legendary Jeff Easley, and his art is easily the most realistic and visually enthralling of all that have been recently created by other artists. Knightsbridge does complete justice to the incredible abilities demonstrated by K. Parkinson, including his mastery with fantasy creatures that appear completely cliche in the work of others: dragons, werebeasts, elves, etc.

Essential Art Resource.......2000-01-08

Any artist interested in the Fantasy genre needs to have this book in their resource library. Keith's solutions to common problems are amazing.

If you like fantasy art in general you're surely going to like Keith Parkinson's works,he has painted ilustrations for fantasy novels,video games,collectors cards,gaming cards and more. a lot of his artwork can be found in dragonlance merchandise and in this book there are some very detailed eye catching images that will delight anyone's eyes. I have many fantasy art books,and this one is one I'm very happy to hve in my collection,I recommend any fantasy interested person to buy this one.

The Best Book on the Subject.......2002-12-02

This book is a must read for any person interested in the cutlural effect of wild and rural land fire. The book is accessible to everybody, it is well writen and light on technical jargon. Pyne undertook a momentous task by writing this book, nothing like it exisited like it when it was first published in 1984, (sorry to the one review that stated that his older books were better, this is the first one, his other books are great supliments in the cycle of fire.) A GREAT BOOK.

Culture and Fire.......2001-03-12

Although there are any number of worthy books and articles on the ecological effects of fire (and of fire-suppression), Pyne's take on the ways in which humans have and still do use fire in manners which are as much conditioned by matters of tradition as well as those of rationality struck me as a novel way of looking at the subject.

As a child I gleefully participated in the annual raking of fallen tree leaves into piles and their subsequent destruction by fire. It seemed part of the natural order of things and was great fun. Although the community that I grew up in has long since banned the practice, it never occurred to me to reflect on the cultural norms behind the practice until I read this book. It is rather enlightening and humbling to see one's own behavior examined with the level of detachment and dispassion that an anthropologist might bring to some unfamiliar and seemingly bizarre practices of some isolated aboriginal tribe!

This book is no polemic, nor does it have any obvious agenda. I am unaware of any controversy over its contents. This is not to say that the author's views are not fresh and interesting.

And why, after years of discussion of fire policy, are some of America's most spectacular conflagrations arising now, and often not in a remote wilderness but close to large settlements?

That is the opening to a brilliant discussion of the politics of fire by one of the country's most knowledgeable writers on the subject, Stephen J. Pyne. Once a fire fighter himself (for fifteen seasons, on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon) and now a professor at Arizona State University, Pyne gives us for the first time a book-length discussion of fire policy, of how we have come to this pass, and where we might go from here.

An Excellent Overview of an Era.......2000-11-04

With an emphasis on architecture, this book also covers gardens, furnishings and interior decoration of Elizabethan and Jacobean era country houses. Mowl explains how the houses were used, which in turn explains many of their stylistic elements. Mowl uses historic engravings and paintings as well as gorgeous color photographs to illustrate the text. There are also many interesting excerpts from period documents and literature. There is a fairly good glossary and an appendix of the addresses for the houses discussed in the book. I found that some of the terminology was a bit difficult but overall I learned a great deal about the aristocracy of the period by learning how they lived on and used thier grand estates.
