Better than LP.......2007-01-30

In the group I was traveling with we had both the Rough Guide and the Lonely Planet guide and we consistently found the Rough Guide superior to the Lonely Planet in terms of narration, history, accuracy, ease of use, and better maps. Neither book was entirely comprehensive but the Rough Guide was a must have to point you in the right direction.

An underexposed classic.......2006-03-23

The fact that Heinrich Kley isn't better known demonstrates the flaw in the idea that "history will sort out the great work." Kley is quite simply one of the best and most imaginative draftsmen in the Western tradition, and he is never mentioned in the standard histories of art. (I discovered him in Harvey Kurtzman's HELP! magazine in the early Sixties.) This constitutes a coup (one of many) for Dover Publications, who specialize in the dissemination of classics (famous and forgotten) in well-made, affordable editions. Anyone who cares at all about drawing should pick up this book.

Fabulous Drawings.......2005-09-11

What an eye opener, what a fantastic, comical and totally genuine talent was Kley. Puts our contemporary "mark Maker" graduates of university art programs to shame. This guy did it all out of his head out of connsumate knowledge of anatomy and character. His skill with the plastic form in space is delightful to behold.

Expressionism and its Bleak Social Commentary.......2002-07-06

Heinrich Kley, an expressionist know for his work with pen and ink sketches, mostly of the black and white variety, is someone undeservedly without oceans of renown despite the fact that many of his works appear around us daily. He did have his proverbial "day in the sun," gaining notoriety for his satirical approach to world at large, but that seems to have ebbed off since his death in the 1940s and many have forgotten who this is. Well, this book is a wonderful showpiece of his works, containing two of his sketchbooks that many people have seen plenty of times but might not recognize by name, helping to revitalize the memory. Many of these works still have a lot of social merit today, taking shots at bureaucracy, militarism, and other satirical facets that we still find ourselves plagued with.

I found myself attracted to this artist because of his strangely dark overtures showpieced in this volume, with snails consuming people and giants stomping villages full of what they deem their inferiors, plus its takes on industrialism and religion. Presented with an introduction that explains the life of the artist, this editions, actually two books brought together for one showing, has a total of 200 illustrations spanning 125 + pages and makes it an excellent deal. Still, if your easily offended perhaps theme presentation will most deservedly offend you and you might want to pass on it. If you like dark humor that has deep seeded, often missed, meanings, however, you'll love Kley.

Copie algunos de los dibujos alli representados y luego hice algunos mios siguiendo el mismo tipo de trazo o similar y creo que esos dibujos tienen una gran fuerza.Es una manera diferente y atrevida de representar el cuerpo humano vivo y muerto. Son de los pocos dibujos a tinta que me han gustado, y me parecen muy buenos. ENHORABUENA.

An excellent review of the historical problems surrounding the authorship and date of "De excidio et conquestu Britanniae" attributed to Gildas. It uses the textual evidence to consider the nationality of Gildas, evidence for unity and authenticity of the text, and reviews the various arguments regarding the date of its writing. Finally, the author provides textual evidence regarding his interpretation of the date "De Excidio" was written using the text's lack of comment on the Easter Question, the reigns of the five princes addressed in "De Excidio", and the date of the Siege of Mons Badonicus.

I was pleasently suprised with this book. Books in the past claiming to appeal to the Goddess within your home failed. This book however delivered just as stated. Reading it helped me develope a whole new outlook of my home. After reading it I began seeing rooms in a whole new light. This book not only helps a persons inner self grow but their home. My home has been transformed and is now a personal oasis instead of just a place to exsist. I recommend this book to the woman who yearns to make her home a positive, engergetic, loving personal oasis where every room explodes in song when you enter.

Original and Inspiring.......2003-07-01

I missed the opportunity to meet the author this weekend in San Francisco. She is a respected scholar who writes like a romance novelist. I enjoyed looking at the pictures and reading the text because it reminded me of the first time I was transported by mythology...way back in eighth grade English class in San Diego.

What woman doesn't want to come out of the bath dropping clean and erotic like Aphrodite? Or to be respected for her mind reading in the library like Athena? Don't we all want our homes to exude all the sides of who we are - sensual, intelligent, outdoorsy and domestic all at the same time? The author inspires you to do that within the 'goddess' context.

Amazon (I myself am too short to be an Amazon (sigh...) should package this book as a triple threat with Nigella Lawson's How to be a Domestic Goddess, Kim Cattrall's Satisfaction: The Art of the Female Orgasm and they'll really have something for every woman.

Buy the book, place it on your coffee table, and watch how everyone is drawn to it by the glowing, irresistible cover.

Divine Inspiration.......2003-06-15

I ordered this book not knowing what to expect. As an interior designer in training and a priestess of The Goddess I was intrigued at Ms. Llewellyn's book concept. I read through it in about an hour. I was both shocked and pleased to find that Ms. Llewellyn's design inspirations were things I had already done in my own home without, perhaps, knowing why I did them. The images she chose to showcase goddess inspired rooms were breathtaking. I believe a great deal of research went into this project. The information she presented in reference to the Hellenic Goddesses she chose was concise and accurate. I recommend this book highly to anyone who loves interior design and Greek Goddesses.

At age fifty, Hall has never owned his own home, and his parents never owned a home either. Now finally able to pursue the American dream, Hall is planning to buy or build a home for himself, which he sees as the outer manifestation of his inner completion. Rescuers Defying the Nazis, by Toby Axelrod, is a non-fiction book about non-Jewish teens who rescued Jewish families from the Holocaust. This book uses examples of rescue accounts and real quotes and passages from Jewish and non-Jewish survivors during the 1940's. The book also helps to portray the realism of te danger involved with helping Jews as well as the was and Hitler's reign.

Rescuers is a favorite topic amongst teens reading about the Holocaust. Many of the teens involved became rescuers when their parents opted to hid Jews. Yet, there are the stories, such as Teresa Prekerowa who rescued a little girl in Warsaw and hid her even from Teresa's family. The stories of these brave teens, acting alone or with a group, are touching.
