Customer Reviews:
Finally something different.......2007-08-03
I am sitting here looking at 7 different travel books of Paris that I received as gifts prior to my trip to Paris. Now this was my 2nd trip; the first one was in 1966 and I was in high school so I don't think it really counts. I felt like I was starting over and I really didn't know where to start. While some of the guide books were helpful, I really wanted to get a few very special momentos of the trip - especially scarves - so I was just thrilled when I happened upon Maribeth's book at Shakespeare and Co. when we were already there. I devoured the book that night and from it easily found several wonderful shops that I never would have seen were it not for her shop. I look forward to using it to an even greater degree as I plan a trip back next year.
Your Paris Shopping Map-Don't Leave Home Without It!.......2003-02-13
Most of the Paris guides available give plenty of information on using the Paris Metro, the museums, and taking a taxi. However, what they lack is information on the very things that make a visit to Paris memorable and personal. Maribeth Clemente's "The Riches of Paris" provides key information on a wide variety of shopping interests. Are you into antique books?-the book has it....Are you into food stores, children's boutiques, or flowers? - the book has it. How about the best place to get a couture scarf, a pen, a cigar? - Again, the book has it. What I especially found useful was my ability to plan my shopping excursions before I got onto the plane...when I arrived I was able to fit in both the best sightseeing and museums AND the shops I knew would be of interest to me. My time was efficiently planned and I was able to fit many more memorable experiences into my trip. Ms. Clemente's index is especially useful in personalizing your trip...seperating shops by like categories, and presenting them in the book by area. This categorization takes the work out of planning a day....one day I planned to visit a particular area...I was set because of the book. Another day I decided to visit all children's toy stores...no problem again because of the book! A must have for getting the most out of your time!
The elegance and excitement that is only Paris..........2001-09-10
...is evident in every page. Even if I hadn't been planning another trip to the city of lights, I would have been on the next flight!
As shown in her other books, Maribeth Clemente has a wonderful way of not only giving you the information that you need, but getting you excited about your exploration with every word. She covers the "unique" of Paris with a fresh, honest perspective. I feel like I'm walking down a lovely boulevard with her as my guide. When I've checked the "reality" of other travel books, I've found a real mix--what I read was not always what I got. It seems like reviews were completed by multiple sources with multiple perspectives of what would entice. Maribeth Clemente's insight/personality is consistent, elegant, fun and unexpected. And yet...she always seems to leave a little bit to your own exploration. I trust her to route me to the best--especially if I don't have a lot of time. This book is also an improvement from prior releases in it's organization--making quicker, easier reference to the user "on the road". Thanks!
PARIS - A CITY OF ROMANCE, LIGHTS AND DELIGHTS!.......2001-07-06
One has not travelled until you have visited Paris. It is a city of wonder, history, romance, excitement and fashion. I studied for a short time in Paris many years ago and fell in love with the city. It also fell in love with my pocket book! The cafes, exquisite boutiques, and Epicurean cuisine will forever be a cherished memory; however, the first-time traveller to Paris should be forwarned; it can be a VERY EXPENSIVE city to enjoy, particularly if you do not know where you will get "the best value for your dollar." As this book clearly points out, most of the better hotels are luxurious and quite costly, as are the better known, finer restaurants. You definitely will not want to leave home without your trusty credit card! I purchased a Chanel Tee-shirt and for the same price, I could have purchased an entire rack of tee-shirts in my country. However, the joy of Paris is for many, a once-in-a-lifetime experience and one you will never regret no matter what the cost. The book is not complete; however, many of the special places of interest are not included in the book, which was rather disappointing. There are also some excellent more affordable restaurants and places to stay in Paris which are not listed here. The book was interesting and informative but did tend to patronize basically the higher-end, upscale facilities.

pretty fun.......2005-08-10
From the Walter Foster "How to Draw" series, this one shows you how to draw Donald Duck, Uncle Scrooge, and the nephews from Walt Disney animated series "Duck Tales". Very simple and you do not need complex drawing skills for this one. Published in 1991, this small paperback book is good for 7 years old to teens.

The Best Pet Name Book Ever!
ASIN: 0836221621 |
Amazon.com
Having lived with pets all my life, I was a bit astonished that anyone might need a book to help come up with a name for a pet (much less, write such a book!). And yet, here's an entertaining and informative book with lots of historical tidbits, wonderful stories about how people came up the with their own pets' names, a good bit of common-sense pet care information, dos and don'ts, and great pictures of people and their diverse animal friends. All in all, a lot of fun for anyone who enjoys pets of any kind.

Book Description
The Japanese dry landscape garden has long attracted—and long baffled—viewers from the West. While museums across the United States are replicating these "Zen rock gardens" in their courtyards and miniature versions of the gardens are now office decorations, they remain enigmatic, their philosophical and aesthetic significance obscured. Reading Zen in the Rocks, the classic essay on the karesansui garden by French art historian François Berthier, has now been translated by Graham Parkes, giving English-speaking readers a concise, thorough, and beautifully illustrated history of these gardens.
Berthier's guided tour of the famous garden of Ryoanji (Temple) in Kyoto leads him into an exposition of the genre, focusing on its Chinese antecedents and affiliations with Taoist ideas and Chinese landscape painting. He traces the roles of Shinto and Zen Buddhism in the evolution of the garden and also considers how manual laborers from the lowest classes in Japan had a hand in creating some of its highest examples. Parkes contributes an equally original and substantive essay which delves into the philosophical importance of rocks and their "language of stone," delineating the difference between Chinese and Japanese rock gardens and their relationship to Buddhism. Together, the two essays compose one of the most comprehensive and elegantly written studies of this haunting garden form.
Reading Zen in the Rocks is fully illustrated with photographs of all the major gardens discussed, making it a handsome addition to the library of anyone interested in gardening, Eastern philosophy, and the combination of the two that the karesansui so superbly represents.
Praise for the French edition:
"A small book of rare depth, remarkably illustrated, on one of the most celebrated and beautiful rock gardens of the monasteries of Kyoto."—L'Humanité
"Through Le Jardin de Ryoanji, Berthier teaches us to read the zen in the rocks, to discover the language offered by the garden at Ryoanji. Enigmatic, poetic, and disconcerting, an enriching journey through a work of art of surprising modernity, Le Jardin de Ryoanji is a work that will interest all the amateurs of Japanese art and Eastern philosophy."—Lien Horticole
Customer Reviews:
Better in the French edition........2000-06-25
A Frenchman explaining Zen and Japanese gardens, translated into English, makes for an international headache. Some good insights, yes. A lot of pseudo-Zen philosophical nonsense, yes. Best read with a glass of wine (French) in hand.
A great book to understand Zen spirit.......2000-06-16
It's a good book on the subject of Zen. It introduces the spirit of Zen in terms of the number and location of rocks. You can't miss it.

Not another cookie cutter feng shui book!.......2002-03-26
I've recently started reading about feng shui and chinese astrology and have read about 8 books so far. This was one of the best. It's an easy and entertaining read w/a lot of different info from the typical beginner feng shui book. Mr. Lau takes you through the whole process of feng shui w/an interesting history to help readers have a better understanding of why you're placing items where and what items not to use--he doesn't mention crystals and be VERY cautious w/bells and wind chimes. I would have liked to read even more of his practical cures since he also stresses that you don't need to spend a lot of money to cure most situations, that w/creativity, you can find cures w/in your budget. Well worth the time and money!
An honest and authentic approach to Feng Shui.......1999-09-16
This is the most concise and honest book on Feng Shui I have read. Written by a practitioner who has a long family lineage of the Nine Stars Feng Shui school - the oldest in China - it provides an excellent in-sight on the origins of Feng Shui and traces its evolution throughout the dynasties. The author is more concerned with the wisdom of Feng Shui than with focusing on how to improve one's life. He remains faithful to the compass school which is the traditional way of exercising this ancient sacred art. Clearly, the author has chosen not to expand on the higher levels of Feng Shui, but prefers to guide the reader through the practical steps to apply it and bring harmony in the home. In its essence, this art has much to teach us and the author is to be commended for presenting it in such a simplified and authentic manner.
A different perspective.......1999-03-26
The book was not as easy to read as the usual Feng Shui book for the Westerner. Also, instead of the total Bagua influence, there is more focus on the compass directions, the combinations of the elements and influence of color. The space is regarded as a whole, not a room by room analysis. There is one practice study. I am not sure which approach is best in Feng Shui, but this book made me more focused on other aspects rather than total bagua approach. It also doesn't treat every space as wonderful, but points out much of the negative while offering solutions.
not very informative.......1998-01-22
This book, when compared to other books on this subject, gives very little information. It is sparse in content, very poorly written and obviously is written to provide just a cursary glance at a subject which at present has a great deal of interest in the United States.

Customer Reviews:
A vital contribution to our cultural heritage........1999-07-19
As a longtime fan of "El Rey," I enjoyed reading about Tito Puente. He is not only a Latino icon but an American institution, even if English-only America refuses to recognize his cultural and musical contributions. The author does a workman's job in exploring Puente through various interviews with musicians, dance promoters, writers, and friends who know Puente well. The book offers good insight into how Puente developed his great sound and establishes the fact that he is a true musical genius like Gershwin and Ellington before him. While the book is the first true biography of Puente, I'm disappointed that it will not reach more people than it should. Unless the reader has an established grasp of Afro-Cuban music and is familiar with musicians in the field, my fear is that the general reader will get lost and lose interest in the book. It's not an accessible book for those who know little to nothing about the music. Still, it's a vital contribution to our understanding of Puente, Afro-Cuban music and the critical role that Latinos have played in developing America.
A great portriat of "El Rey," Tito Puente!.......1999-06-02
I loved this book! Admittedly, I am a huge fan of Tito Puente, so my opinion may be a little biased. However, in light of his many achievments and the joy his music has spread throughout the world, it is only fitting that we honor Tito Puente while he is still with us. Thanks to the author, Steven Loza.
The book gives us an overview of Tito's life then proceeds to zero in on various aspects of Tito's career through interviews with Tito and various musicians who have shared the spotlight with him.
I was particularly impressed with Joe Conzo's honesty. Joe Conzo is a historian, close friend of Tito's and his "curator." Many of the musicians interviewed are able to speak volumes about Tito's awesome musical talent. However, Joe Conzo manages to humanize Tito and show us a side of the man we rarely see.
Perhaps the most significant aspect of this book is that one cannot read it without being in awe of Tito Puente's many accomplishments. From the Palladium era in the 50's to Salsa in the 90's, Tito has done it all. As he often says, he has been there and back.
The author's closing thoughts dwell on the spiritual aspects of Tito's music and the joy his music brings. Tito's music brings people together regardless of race, color or creed. It has been said that the Mambo has done more for race relations in this country than our government!
This book is an important part of Latin music history. Also, it is now an essential part of Tito Puente's legacy. We all know Tito Puente's music, or at least we all should! Allow Steven Loza to introduce you to the man.
Tito Puente recently celebrated his 76th birthday and is going strong. Palante Tito!

Book Description
----------
He was known as "El Rey del Timbal" and came to epitomize the Latin experience in music, not just to Latinos throughout the United States and Latin America but to a worldwide audience. Recordando a Tito Puente is the first and only in-depth look at the career and lasting influence of this giant of Latin music.
Through exclusive interviews with Puente and his close associates--including Hilton Ruiz, Ray Santos, Jerry Gonzalez, Poncho Sanchez, and Joe Conzo, as well as music journalist Max Salazar and former DJ/producer Chico--the author, reveals all the vibrancy and color of this consummate artist's life, work, and world. Loza shows how Puente's music evolved into its current compelling mix of Afro-Cuban music, salsa, and Latin jazz. Tracing Puente's innovations as a drummer and bandleader Loza defines his influence over the course of half a century on Latin music as well as other musicians and musical genres. Recordando a Tito Puente is a celebration of this dynamic performer and the genre that is deeply rooted in America's rich ethnic diversity.

Book Description
Over an astonishingly varied career, Tito Puente earned scores of awards including a number of Grammys. This album showcases his incredible musical diversity with mambo, pachanga, boogaloo, salsa and Latin jazz styles. His remarkable solos on vibes and timbales are accompanied by some of his favourite singers, including Santos Colon, Celia Cruz and the wild La Lupe, whose performances were explosions of vocal passion. A Puerto Rican-New Yorker, whose musical soul always lay in Cuba as well as Puerto Rico, this swinging master class is a must for dancers and musicians alike.

Book Description
Ernesto "Tito" Puente born in 1923 in Spanish Harlem is a tale about an impoverished Puerto Rican boy who grew up with the advent of radio and American swing bands. At age ten he aspired to be a dancer: another Fred Astaire. An ankle injury gave him the opportunity to explore his talent as a musician. At fourteen he won the coveted Benny Goodman, Gene Krupa drum contest. Tito became a master percussionist. His instrument was the timbales, a pair of cylindrical drums beat upon with sticks. When he joined the dynamic Machito Orchestra at seventeen he saw a spiraling future until the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941 took him off to war. With the smell of kamikaze deaths, battle smoke, and torpedoes flying he sounded taps for the dead in the morning while he led a makeshift orchestra delivering lovable American wartime tunes in the afternoon. He returned home wounded, weary and jobless. Puente's tale should have been the story of every returning American GI, who went off to war, came home to his sweetheart, attended school on the GI Bill, raised a family and settled down in a white cottage. Things were not that way. After the war his obsession for Cuban music drove him to Havana. He attended secret meetings of Santería, an Afro-Cuban religious cult with its roots steeped in mysticism often times referred to as black magic. With the lure of the sacred batá drum he discovered a world of rhythms never heard by a white mans ear. He found himself inside the beat, and thoroughly possessed. Soon Tito became a devotee of Santería and used those drum patterns and calls, which were the mainstay and backbone of his music. Today this hot hypnotic music is known worldwide as salsa.

A Remarkable Biography.......2007-06-26
To remember Tito Puente's career so accurately as Josephine Powell has done makes this biography a worthwhile read. Tito Puente the man and Tito Puente the musician are blended into the tempo of the times during which the musical man lived. Reading of the various venues/clubs and the names of the other musicians with whom Puente played brought back many memories that I enjoyed recalling. When the drums aren't playing they are dreaming; and, for me this read let loose Tito Puente's exciting sound and drew out my Latin blood bringing fire into my old veins. For young musicians seeking success Josephine Powell's well-written commentary provides a glimpse of what can lie ahead in one's career; so do read Powell's take on Tito Puente's life and perhaps capture a taste of how you too can climb the charts with a dash of spice in your style.
Drums are Dreaming or is it Screaming?.......2007-06-08
Puente's multidecade friend's balanced "tell all' manages to expose the pailero's demons and closeted skeletons while maintaining the due reverence she always had for him. Puente was a great showman on the pailas (timbales) but not a tasteful one. Yet in Cuba where the timbales were created (the word and the instrument are derived from the Italian tympanii) Tito was highly respected by those who generally only begrudgingly approve of the non-Cubans who play typically Cuban rhythms.
