      Book Description

A county courthouse stands not only as the center of government, but also as the center of civic pride. Some with stately towers and arched doors or windows, some with high brick chimneys and mansard roofs, some in modern concrete and glass, the 254 courthouses of Texas provide an invitation to public life, a testament to the ideal of justice, and an introduction to period architecture.

It is no wonder, then, that many tourists each year visit these edifices. This new edition of a classic, indispensable, full-color guide--a true collector's item for Texas history fans--will help travelers choose which courthouses they want to add to their trips and view them knowledgeably. For each county a color photograph pictures the courthouse and an account sketches the sequence of the seats of government, the location and style of the current building, and tidbits of fascinating lore about county and county seat names and history.

Courthouses and the "squares" around many of them offer a bonanza for history buffs, antique collectors, genealogists, architecture enthusiasts, and photographers. Many of them house or are near local history museums, and many display historical markers that introduce the area to visitors. Especially in many smaller county seats, the courthouse square offers a genre scene of a special moment in Texas' life.

Included in this updated edition are the latest views of some of Texas' most historic and architecturally significant courthouses, including those restored under the Texas Historical Commission's Historic Courthouse Preservation Program.

For all those who plan their travels to see courthouses, and all those who in their travels for other reasons enjoy detours into the heritage and pride of a people, this beautiful and informative book opens the way.

2 out of 5 stars TEXAS COURTHOUSES ....THE BROSURE.......2007-06-26

This book is not bad as a simple guide, but it has no indepth history of the courthouses and the images look very amateurish, but every courthouse, no matter how small, has a requisite image, which is a plus and frankly is what makes this guide worth having. Every courthouse gets a small image, and a small blurb , and i do mean small, about it's style, history and who designed it. If you are really into courthouses, id recommend it i guess, but only if your a real fan. This pales in comparison to the book the Historic Texas Courthouses by Andrews..now that book is GREAT, with interesting text and beautiful images, that book I give five stars...uh whomever gave this review an unhelpful has either never seen this book or is a family member of the author..honestly, I challenge anybody to pick up this book and look at it and not totally agree, and worse yet, the images in this guide are not updated, the picture of the courthouse in Corpus Christi is still under construction, uh it was completed in the mid nineties..an DECADE ago..i mean the authors could not have traveled to Corpus and got an updated image, not doing so is just plain lazy, all this book has different than the first addition is a nicer cover, an update forward, that says nothing really enlightening and a higher price, i mean the images in this book are hardly professional anyway, so really they could have called some random person in Corpus with a dig camera to take the pic and email it them..scan it and put it in the book, it could not have been much more amatuerish than what is in here.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful 2nd edition of "The Courthouses of Texas".......2007-06-06

The second edition of Dr. Kelsey's guide book to Texas courthouses is a joy, either to carry on your next road trip or to use in browsing Texas's 254 county courthouses from home. Published in 2007 by Texas A&M Univeristy Press, the book retains Dr. Kelsey's "Personal Tour" section, but has updated photos, county population, and appendixes. This is much needed, since numerous Texas counties in recent years have been busy with historic preservation and restoration of their historic courthouses.

If you are one of those folks, who like me, make it a point to check out the courthouse square whenever you find yourself in a rural Texas county, this book is one you'll want to carry with you.

The photos are in color, and though only about 2.5" x 3/5" in size, very clear, clean, and uncluttered.

The alphabetical county listing makes finding any particular courthouse easy. The comments retain descriptions of courthouse styles, names of architects, and brief historical notes that you'd not likely pick up when just passing through town. The paperback version measures 6" x 10" - handy to carry in a backpack or tote.

If after looking through it, you'd like more in-depth information about some of the historical Texas courthouss, you might also enjoy "Historic Texas Courthouses," a coffee table-sized volume by Michael Andrews, with fine photos, including closeups of architectural details, by Paul Hester and Lisa Hardaway (Bright Sky Press: Albany, Texas) 2006. It's also fun to track down a copy of Coursey Clark's 1962 classic "Courthouses of Texas" (in black and white) for comparison.

On my wish list for third edition of Kelsey and Dyal's great guidebook, I'd suggest adding one feature from Clark's format--tiny outlines of the state and its many counties on each page with the particular county highlighted for easy geographical reference. With so many counties, just keeping up with their location is no easy feat!

      5 out of 5 stars Warning.......2001-09-17

This book made me want to start my quest to visit ALL of the courthouses of Texas. This has become something of a burden to me now. Some of the most beautiful ones are quite remote. Be warned - when you see a really beautiful courthouse - you will want to see more.

I was quite pleased with this book. I found that Bammes can be a difficult read, but the illustrations are well worth the investment for the artist studying animal anatomy. He presents a systematic approach of understanding the bones, muscles and surface planes of the torso, front legs, rear legs and head of some iconic animals. Animal anatomy understanding wouldn't be complete without the gestural freedom of Hultgren as well. I recommend Hultrgren for your right brain and Bammes for your left brain.

Since I had found Bammes' "The Artist's Guide to Human Anatomy" helpful, I ordered his animal anatomy book without ever having seen it. What a mistake. There were a few well done, loose, expressive drawings, but most of the drawings that purported to be realistic were badly drawn. I'm not talking about niceties such as line quality, or rendering of surface details either. There were gross perspective and proportional errors in far too many of the author's drawings! Buy Hamm's "How to Draw Animals" instead. It may have a dated look, but the information is still first rate, and the drawings are accurate.

2 out of 5 stars Idiosyncratic, not a book to get as a stand-alone reference.......2001-03-24

Bammes was a professor of Anatomical Drawing in the Academy For Fine Arts in Dresden and his mastery of drawing and structure is obvious from many of the reproductions. He shows us a very mechanistic approach to understanding the structure of a given animal which is in stark contrast to the loose, expressive and often beautiful sketches and finished drawings.

The book is surprisingly text-heavy for a topic of this nature, especially for a book only 140-odd pages long, often explaining in words what I feel would have been better expressed with more drawings and diagrams.

It's subdivided into 9 chapters, not all of which necessarily make sense in terms of their separation. The first, "Basic Principles In Drawing Animals", is only six pages long, and doesn't really serve as much of an introduction and would have been better suited combined with chapter 3 on proportion. Chapter 2 is also an odd choice this early, "Body Cover Textures"; apart from the fact that it is very superficial, I think it would have worked much better placed near the end before presenting fully-worked drawings as a sort of tie-up of all the information presented to that point. Chapter 3 is also quite superficial, with only basic diagrammatical side views of a lion, dog, horse, cow and chimpanzee and what to me least is a pointless comparison to the form of a human bent over into an quadruped stance! Chapter 4 is titled "Repose And Motion" and is a good basic introduction to movement and stance, but again I felt it was over-simplified and could have included more examples. The fifth and sixth chapters cover the form of the hind leg and the foreleg respectively, making a very valid comparison of the structure of these between different species. Chapter 7 is on the form of the trunk, starting with a comparison of vertebral columns and then shifting abruptly to sketches of lions in repose before going back to sketches and then to almost-pointless comparisons of the thorax, isolated from the rest of the form. Chapter 8 is on head forms, and here the author includes a number of detailed skull drawings and anatomical views, with some skillful simplifications of the overall forms into broader masses but unless one wants to draw animal skeletons I can't see the real point of this. Sure, simplifying form is one of the basic tenets of drawing today but surely this is better suited to the outside structure, not internal details that have only limited bearing on the final form. The final chapter is titled "Coming To Terms With The Whole Animal Figure" and you will no doubt be surprised to discover there are only four drawings, all with simplified forms, with 12 sketches, some of which are extremely loose.

I'm sure if one were willing to read through the text completely and follow the accompanying drawings it all might make some sort of sense, but I found it disjointed and a bit aimless in its approach. Overall I was extremely disappointed with the book as a whole and would only recommend getting it as an adjunct to other, better, books and even then only if you got it cheap like I did.

              5 out of 5 stars Great guide.......2003-02-07

A fabulous book for beginning birders, Birdscaping your Garden acts as an all-purpose guide to identification, habitat, and feeding habits. Identification is aided by a short description as well as a black and white sketch and a full-color photo. Each two-page spread discusses one bird with details including migration and winter range, breeding range and behavior, nesting, and a short list of plants to use for bird food.
The feeding guide is garden and plant focused (rather than the typical hanging birdfeeder type focus) with the idea of using native plantings to attract and feed birds. Purchased seed options are rarely mentioned.
As organized and helpful as the individual page layouts are, the overall organization of the book is lacking. The reader is forced to browse through all 64 birds in the directory section to find what is being sought since the birds are not listed in any particular order. The book's lack of regional focus is also limiting and reduces the number of relevant entries to about 30 if you live in New Jersey, for example.
The final section of the book is a plant directory which is organized alphabetically by scientific name. The section includes photos and general cultural guidelines for plants that will shelter and feed the birds previously discussed. A list of "Birds Attracted" within the individual plant descriptions is a nice cross-reference with the bird directory section.
The dichotomy of the book should not put you off - it is clearly written and useful despite its overall lack of organization. There is no doubt it is valuable for creating a native, bird-friendly garden.

              5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book!.......2002-08-11

I first found this book at our local library and when I went to photocopy "a few pages" I realized I was about the copy the whole book so I decided to just buy the book for myself. It's terrific! It goes through all sorts of species of bushes and trees, indicates what type of wildlife is attracted to it, how they use it, etc. It has good pictures too. A real must have for the backyard gardener who wants to have some wildlife in their life. Highly highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars A Wealth of Good Information.......1998-12-04

Want to "reform" your backyard? This book is a great place to start. A wonderful primer on birds and plants, this book is also a solid reference book. I highly recommend it for anyone who is interested in, or is serious about, creating a great place for the birds and the bees to hang out.

                    Book Description

No Return Address is a vivid memoir of a life in exile and a poignant meditation on pleasure and loss, repression and transgression, and the complexities of love under harsh human conditions. In recounting her life's journey from Romania to Paris and Brussels, then on to the United States, Anca Vlasopolos writes movingly of the peculiar attributes of displacement in the contemporary world -- the hyphenated, ambiguous identities; the purgatory in which immigrants await transfer to another country; the mysterious nostalgia for places and events dimly recalled. Throughout, she describes the constant search for a place to truly call home.

Vlasopolos renders a clear and loving portrait of her mother, an Auschwitz survivor courageously raising a young girl by herself after the death of her husband, a political dissident. She details their years of limbo in Brussels and Paris and of settlement in Detroit, Michigan, as well as her ultimate decision to identify the United States as home, inspired by the strong multicultural quality that allows so many others to do the same.

                    5 out of 5 stars a compelling memoir.......2006-01-28

Dr. Vlasopolos, Womens Studies Director at Wayne State University, has written an extraordinary memoir that will appeal to many audiences. Her control of language is masterful yet subtle, and Ch. 15 ("Misplacing Detroit") is perhaps the best rendering I've ever read of those of us who have lived in and left and returned to Detroit, articulating the enitre palette of emotions and of love-hate that we cherish for that city and its peoples.

3 out of 5 stars Educational, with a touch of arrogance........2001-03-15

I selected this book because I enjoy biographies and history. I have been reading various histories of World War 2, and this book was interesting in that respect. I want to learn the "human" side of history (versus the military or government view). Ms. Vlasopolos paints a very detailed picture of life in Eastern Europe immediately after the war. A secondary, intertwined biography of her mother adds greatly and importantly to these details. I did, however, find this book difficult to follow at times. In my opinion, this book was written for Ms. Vlasopolos fellow literature experts. Numerous references to the literary works of others left me feeling fairly uneducated, my Master's degree not withstanding. I finished the book with a significant reading list that one might consider a "pre-requisite" to reading this book. My high school French failed me in a few places, as well! While I describe these concerns as shortcomings of the book, they may simply be my own. I found it amusing that while presenting stereotypes and prejudice in an appropriately negative light, the author feels it necessary to mention that she would never sleep with a Republican. I came away from this book with a feeling that, once again, a European had to point out cultural weaknesses of Americans (language, literature, and food). Perhaps that is a goal of this professor, to make the reader want to improve and learn. If so, she may have succeeded! However, she may have also put valuable educational material out of the literary reach of many.

                    5 out of 5 stars oral transgressions.......2001-02-13

This is the most moving and meaningful memoir I have ever read. The author tells a personal history, a national and international history, as well as a short history of western thought in a way that ties together beautifully. Near the start of the book, it is said that religion is a control over what goes into and out of the mouth, and this metaphor sticks with the incredible telling/story-telling throughout.

5 out of 5 stars AN EXTRAORDINARY BOOK.......2000-11-30

A stunning memoir of enormous power--a work both accessible and phenomenal. This book, with a lyric and incisive style, uses the politics of appetite, language, and other modes of communication (or censorship) as a lens through which to describe the author's and her family's (primarily her mother's) lives and various displacements. Filled with vivid details that range from the nightmarish (the stories Vlasopolos's mother tells her of Auschwitz) to the exquisite (the precise flavor of sour-cherry liquor, or the burnt-sugar smell of the Paris Metro), this memoir is at once a story you can't put down and a poem you never want to end, whose every phrase makes your breath catch in your throat with wonder. The book combines the personal with the political movingly with a seeming effortlessness that is as fascinating as it is impressive. A hauntingly beautiful book: no one should miss this.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Life Well Written.......2000-11-30

I don't usually read autobiography, but -- since I very much liked Anca Vlasopolos's mystery novel MISSING MEMBERS (and have been waiting in vain for a sequel) -- when I saw this title by the same author, I happily took a chance. And I'm glad I did. NO RETURN ADDRESS has enough plot and incident for several novels (and as many movies; I kept visualizing the possibilities and casting the lead roles). It's vividly written and reads like poetry. Vlasopolos's life (and those of her concentration-camp-survivor mother and political-prisoner father) is intrinsically interesting, but -- even if nothing had ever happened to her and her family -- her writing would make the whole thing compelling. My favorite part among many is the Greekly tragi-comic incident involving the author as a little girl, a treasured out-of-print book of plays, and a playful puppy.
