4 out of 5 stars Accurate Informative Book.......2007-06-15

As a Westerner having already visited to India for some time (and who would like to go again), I found this book to be extremely accurate in its detailed descriptions of the many cultures and customs of this facinating country. I also learned some more things here that I didn't know the first time around, and found it very helpful and entertaining as well.

Although anyone would be very hard pressed to cover the immense complexities of this country, I think the author did a very good job, and should be a must read for anyone going for the first time, along with a "quicky" travel guide book of specific places to go and see.

The only problem I had with the book were in certain parts where she put down some of the religious beliefs and their followers, disregarding the validity and meaning they may hold for those that follow them, with little jabs at the end of each paragraph. It seemed obnoxious, judgmental and opinionated, as if she assumed her view was the only one worth considering. A real turn-off. A little more broadmindedness would have been more enriching.

Other than that, I thought the book was quite good, detailed and well written. Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Highly Informative!.......2002-06-08

Although this is the first book I've read on Indian culture, I think it would be difficult to find another book written with such detail about so many aspects of Indian culture as Kolanad's does. Her insight into how Westerners think is invaluable as she herself grew up in a Western society for part of her life. Being Indian, she gives authority to what she writes. I truly enjoyed reading this book and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in Indian customs and etiquette.

5 out of 5 stars India for Dummies.......2001-09-24

This book brought me interesting thoughts about India; both nostalgic and humorous. The book is written with a view to satisfy a female traveller, but it does not make much generalizations in this aspect. Even though a person living in India might feel this book paints a distorted view, anyone who has seen the world outside India will find this book more entertaining and useful.
This is not considered as a tour guide for a person who is just passing through the airports. If you ever thought India is just like what you see in Jackson heights (N.Y.) or Devon St (Chicago) or as in the movie "City of Joy", you are mistaken . Nowhere in the world you could see people living with contrasting environments and outlook of life, sharing a wall between 19th and 20th (21st?) century at the same moment.
Gitanjali Kolanad introduces some assumptions as to why the Indian life is so contradictory in many aspects. The author provides a brief, but well narrated history of this south Asian region and tries to analyze the origin of the social heirarchy, the division of labour and the attitudes of Indians to these.
This book is an honest oversimplification of the problems a foreigner will face and the author gives some valuable advice and certain quick fixes. I would say you need an open mind and this book before you start your passage to India.

5 out of 5 stars Great for those planning more than a short tour.......2001-05-31

I'll be brief, so as not to echo others' comments. Preparing for a six month stint in India for business, I was unsatisfied after reading other "guide" books. Looking for something more than a history lesson and hot spot list, I reached for Culture Shock!. This book details subtle nuances that exist between US and Indian cultures. Great read and highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Decent Background Information - But Too Topical.......2000-12-15

I read this book approximately a month before going to India on business. Although this added to my already growing excitement, I found that this book was really geared more toward one who was either going to be casually traveling or living there on a permanent basis.

I found that I was not at all prepared for what India had to offer - now, that wasn't because I hadn't done enough research, rather because of the random and chaotic nature of where I was located.

Pros: The first few chapters go into topics such as political history, represented religions, holidays, festivals, and other good things to know. The author then takes us through setting up a household, to having servants, how dinner parties are organized and executed, and other feasibly useful information.

Cons: Although this is written by an Indian person, the information within is simply given without explanation. I didn't learn why some of the comments made in the book were true until I had been there for a while, and I didn't realize how classist some of the situations presented were until I had experienced the situation myself.

If you are looking to learn of practical things to do, ways to get around, and what to probably really expect once you step off of the plane on your first visit, I would suggest a travel book such as Lonely Planet, or Fodors.

This book is worth reading, but don't expect this to be your only guide.

    1 out of 5 stars rather unbalanced.......2002-07-26

althought this book is relativly well written and candid it seems as though the author does to full understand the culture and often misrepresents it. the pictures (although black and white) are quite nice and the descriptions of the elite in the major cities such as karachi and lahore are close to true but not always agreeable. I visited pakistan for my friends wedding a few months ago and this book contradicts most of what i learned about their culture and ceremonies. what i found most misrepresented was the issue of sexism in pakistan. the author mentions how women have less authority than men but conveniently forgets to mention the respect and facilities they are awarded as mothers, sisters, and wives. all in all i felt this book isnt the best way to go if you really want to understand the country and the people of pakistan, this book isnt the best way to go.

3 out of 5 stars By No Means Uninteresting.......2001-08-07

Having never been to Pakistan myself, I am perhaps not a fair judge of how accurate this book actually is. However, I am familiar with the Pakistani culture and I can comment on the style in which this book was written.

The book is very informative and detailed. Every aspect of life imaginable: villages, cities, business, weddings, hosting parties, buying houses, what is/isn't safe to eat--it even gives a break-down of which foreigners will be liked and/or disliked by Pakistanis. She does a very good job, ostensibly, of giving a description adequate for more than just a two week vacation in an exotic country. This book is also, considering that it is a nonfiction travel guide, quite interesting and able to keep your attention--with appealing photography (although in black-and-white) and hilarious sketches by Zafar Ihsan, it will not fail to keep your attention.

As negatives for the book, they unfortunately come across rather distinctly. Ms. Mittmann comes from a failed marriage to a Pakistani, so perhaps this explains her viewpoint. The book is very dour and rather pessimistic. Although Mittmann claims to love Pakistan and cherish it as a country, you can hardly believe that given her criticism of it. While it is true that Pakistan's Islamic culture does strike Westerners as rather sexist, she lacks the compassion to explain that some of this restriction stems from an ancient desire to protect women and keep them out of harm's way. There is also a quality in this book which is bereft of light-hearted excitement. Perhaps this is because the thrill of living abroad wears off in expatriates all-too-soon.

This is a fair book. I would consider it worth reading for somebody already familiar with Pakistani culture, but would warn away any newcomers. Its style is mildly patronizing and there is a stoic, almost-depressing air about it, which would frighten anyone curious about Islamic cultures away.

1 out of 5 stars Not for Professional Women............2001-05-22

I work in foreign assistance and am very much looking forward to moving to Pakistan for my next job. I bought this book, as I have bought others in the "culture shock" series when I have worked/traveled in other developing countries for extended periods.

Unfortunately, this book seems to be written for men. At first I thought it was just poor editing and choice of words (i.e. using masculine he/his/him pronouns without it being clear if the advice was meant to apply to men or to men AND women) then it became obvious that I was just being left out. The sectiions about women are preoccupied with clothes and shopping, and in a few sections -- most notably the one on the workplace -- it actually starts refers to a few things for "your wife" (i.e, playing hostess) to do to "help". As a single woman professional, I'm pretty disgusted that this section made NO reference to issues or etiquette that I must consider if I am to succeed at my next job.

And, just to add appalling icing on the cake....... the "sex" section consists solely of how I can find a prosititute despite the banning of brothels and how not to get conned by their pimps.

    ARGH!!!!!!!

I think most people are smart enough to take things in context. Not everywhere and every situation will match cultural norms, but this book is the best place to start on Pakistan. I look forward to reading others in this series as I travel elsewhere. I read the travel books on Pakistan but this one gave the most preparation to the culture and what to expect while most books tell you places or events of interest.

A definite must when heading that direction!!!

4 out of 5 stars This book may answer some of your questions about Nepal.......2002-02-03

If you've visited Nepal but are left with more questions than answers, or if you plan to work or live in the country, this is a good book to read. The first 100 pages are a somewhat dry description of the many Nepali tribes and castes, their traditions, differences, and origins.
The next chapter "The Nepali life cycle", is fun to read, and enlightening, also in what concerns the status and life style of Nepali women. Take the following example: Hindu tradition poses high responsability on fathers to watch over their daughters; to sidestep this burden, the Newar people invented a trick. Surprising as it is, by marrying their daughters at the age of seven to the god Vishnu, and thus reducing any subsequent marriage to the status of "secondary marriage", there is no shame for the family if the daughter is not "pure" before marriage, and also divorce is possible for her. Also aspects of schooling and courtship are discussed.
The chapters are "Dealing with Nepalis" and "Close encounters", reflect the author's experience with handling projects in Nepal and may be very useful if you wish to set up a project in Nepal and to keep it running smoothly.

2 out of 5 stars a manual with no soul..........2000-01-12

Dry information: a description of Nepali's and their customs written as if they were apples, oranges and pears. Not completely uninteresting, but I will certainly suppliment this book with others

5 out of 5 stars The Leonardo of Natural History.......2001-02-16

Fourth Book in the Art of Nature Series about a man whose only legacy is his art work. Ferdinand Bauer became a traveling painter, recording the plant life of Greece and Asia Minor. In 1801, at the age of forty one, he became a painter for the natural history expedition aboard the Investigator, which was mapping the coast of Australia. After you view this book I think that you will agree that his zoological illustrations are fantastic and justly famous. It has more than just botanical art. Birds, mammals and sea creatures!!!

Ferdinand Bauer was a bachelor and had no pupils: not even a portrait of him survives. His art is truly his legacy. After the publication of this book, I don't think this artist's work will continue in obscurity. Enjoy!!!

3 out of 5 stars Wonderful Botanical Paintings.......2000-03-25

Botanical paintings of historical and scientific value are printed in this book. I recommend it to people who have an interest in a botanical art.

This comprehensive guide draws together the remarkable array of butterflies that mark the West Indies and the southern tip of Florida as a biogeographical area. The authors describe all six hundred butterflies, species and subspecies, known from the area, including the many that have evolved on the islands, and the work is based on their first-hand field experience. The book provides an historical overview which surveys possible faunal origins, the size of island faunas, and conservation problems. The individual descriptions detail its West Indian distribution, key identification features, observations on habitat choice and behaviour, and life history information. It also includes a taxonomic checklist and an extensive bibliography.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Guide to Edible Plantlife!.......2000-06-27

"The Flavors of Home" is a highly readable and well-illustrated account of the variety and richness of edible plants in the San Francisco Bay Area. Before reading it, I could never have imagined that an urban realm of some 6 million people would house such a rich supply of edibles (and a surprising abundance in our own backyards!)

Ms. Roos-Collins thoughtfully informs you of the types and usages of local plantlife, provides recipes, and warns you where danger lurks. The hand-drawn illustrations by Rose Craig are excellent.

I highly recommend this wonderful resource to anyone wanting to know more about the variety and seasonal availability of edible foliage in the Bay Area.

                      Book Description

This work comprises a literary comparison of surviving alternative versions of selected narrative-cycles from the Nights. Pinault draws on the published Arabic editions -- especially Bulaq, MacNaghten, and the fourteenth-century Galland text recently edited by Mahdi -- as well as unpublished Arabic manuscripts from libraries in France and North Africa. The study demonstrates that significantly different versions have survived of some of the most famous tales from the Nights. Pinault notes how individual manuscript redactors employed -- and sometimes modified -- formulaic phrases and traditional narrative topoi in ways consonant with the themes emphasized in particular versions of a tale. He also examines the redactors' modification of earlier sources -- Arabic chronicles and Islamic religious treatises, geographers' accounts and medieval legends -- for specific narrative goals. Comparison of the narrative structure of diverse story-collection also sheds new light on the relationship of the embedded subordinate-narrative to the overarching frame-tale. All cited passages from the Nights and other Arabic story- collections have been fully translated into English.

Richard Francis Burton was essentially the first to produce an unexpurgated translation of this wonderful book of tales. Though Burton's English is often excessively stilted, Jack Zipes has quite handily adapted (and condensed from the original 10 volumes) this magical grouping of stories, as told by the enchanting Scheherazade, who tells the nightly tales to save her own life. A classic and must have for anyone's library.

                        Book Description

Princess Salme, daughter of Sabid ibn Sultan, ruler of Oman and Zanzibar, was born in Zanzibar on August 30, 1844. In 1866 she fled to Aden where she was baptized with the Christian name Emily and where she married the German merchant Rudolph Heinrich Ruete. In Hamburg three children were born. Her husband died in 1870, and after that she lived in several cities in Germany. In 1885 and again in 1888 she went to Zanzibar. Between 1889 and 1914 she lived in Jaffa and Beirut, and afterwards again in Germany. She died in Jena in 1924. The present work contains a short biography of Princess Salme/Emily Ruete and of her son Rudolph Said-Ruete, a new English translation of her Memoirs, and an English version of her other writings, unpublished so far: Letters Home, Sequels to the Memoirs and Syrian Customs and Usages.

In the XIX century many western painters tried to describe the "lost world" of harems and sultanian courts. But those paintings were only imagination, because generally the westerns were not allouded to enter in those places. Instead, these "Memoirs" are a genuine source for having an idea of an islamic court of the XIX century. Furthermore the unicity of this book is due to the fact that it is written by a woman, the daughter of the Sultan Said bin Sultan of Oman, who escaped away from Zanzibar with a german trader and married him. The diary of Salme Reute was published many times and in different places. The edition by E. Van Donzel is more accurate and annotated than others. In it we find old photographs and other written materials on Zanzibar and Salme collected by the editor in different european archives.

                          5 out of 5 stars Description needed!.......2000-07-11

First, an apology for using the review mechanism to ask a question, but ... no description, and no apparent way to email the author directly? Intriguing as the title sounds, it's hard to guess what the book is about! Turkish is clearly highly related to Japanese; besides being a similarly agglutinative language, there are too many compelling parallels to ignore (e.g., { sore-, kore-, ore- } <=> { bura-, sura-, ora- }; { -ka, -mi (please excuse the dot) }. Is this book an attempt to establish a linguistic connection to Turkish? or a way of applying Arabic linguistic methods to an "unrelated" language?

This book would be a useful resource for middle eastern dancers looking for costume ideas, but is not as helpful for those looking for exact information about how the garments are made. Many of the poses used by the models are very dramatic (or even high fashion) and attractive, but make it difficult to make out the details of the garments. Historical information is sketchy. However, the wide variety of garments shown and the fact that they are shown in color, together with the extensive commentary in the text, makes this a useful book. There are few books covering Bedouin dress this extensively.

                                  Book Description

A leader must stand tall enough for his followers to find him. "As the God-appointed captain of his family," says Steve Farrar, "a man faces the challenge of spying out the social territory, marking danger zones, and taking stands to protect those in his charge." It's an active leadership role -- and Farrar's been training men to succeed in it for over ten years. In this paperback rerelease of his popular Standing Tall, the men's ministries leader "walks tall" through America -- observing politics, abortion, the gay movement, media trends, and the loss of our "moral boundaries." Farrar offers men sure biblical foundations on which to stand for faith-based living -- closing with "Seven Ways to Help Your Kids Stand Tall." A study guide/appendix makes it great for group use, too!

5 out of 5 stars Standing Tall : How a Man Can Protect His Family.......2001-11-04

Steve Farrar is without a doubt my favorite author of the Promise Keepers' movement. His writing is captivating. One you start reading this you will finish it, at least once. He uses a refreshing mix of intense stories and lighthearted support as he crafts an incredibably compelling case.

He points out with ample documentation, that our families are under attack from the much denied, but inevitable result of our cultures refusal to to define FAMILY.

He also issues an eloquent challange to all men who want the best for their families. Be sure to check out his book "Point Man" too.

I have been a fan of Sharon Gillenwater (aka Sharon Harlow)for a long time now. She has an easy way to her writing and always a good story. The Town is Willow Grove and the story started with her book "McKinnon's Bride" (sharon Harlow)that told the story of Cade McKinnon and Jessie. The second book was "Twice Blessed" (sharon Gillenwater) the story of Ty McKinnon and Camille. This story has all the familiar characters in it and mainly involves Ransom Starr and Lily along with Jessie's brother Quint. Ransom was an ex Ranger, Detective and at the end of Twice Blessed he was asked to be Sheriff of Willow Grove. Lily and her brother are traveling and her father is killed in cold and she sees the killer but the killer didn't see her. She wanted to find the killer to seek revenge and through special circumstances ends up causing Ransom to fall off a balcony. He was hurt really bad and she and her brother took charge of his care. The doctors say he won't walk again but Ransom is determined and so is Lily. Will he be worthy of Lily if he has to use a cane and will Lily give up the idea of revenge. Woven in this story are all the other characters that you have come to know and love. I really enjoyed this story. You can read this as a stand along book but I feel you would enjoy it much more if you started with the beginning book.

The Williams Brothers have been my all-time favorite male gospel group for about as long as I can remember. I read this heartwarming story when it came out back in 1999 and have since re-read it. I love the biographical voice of this book and it allows fans (such as myself) to get a feel of where these dynamic singers and entertainers come from and how they got to where they are. I had the opportunity to meet this group and spend a little time chatting and taking photos with them back in 1996 in Valdosta, GA. Aside from having talent to spare, they are also very inspirational and have absolute magnetic personalities. This book is a must-have for any Williams Brothers fan.

I am a true fan of the Williams Brothers. I grew up with nine sisters and two brothers. I have every record, tape, CD, they recorded. My father was a minister, and I was raised up the old fashion way. I just purchased the book and I know it is a very good one. I have been to several of their concerts in North Carolina and have met them in person. I admire them for the old fashion up bringing and you can tell, by the music, they are true believers in the ALMIGHTY GOD. They have truly been BLESSED. Keep up the good work and please don't stop praising GOD.

This is a wonderful book that chronicles life as seen through the eyes of Doug and Melvin. I would very much like to have heard more from Henry Green and Leonard Williams regarding the early days in the business. The fact that there was not much dialogue from Henry Green makes one wonder what he has to say and how he viewed the same instances as the other two. I saw pictures of Leonard on the web a month ago when he signed the Jackson Southernaires to his Melendo label. He was my favorite, and it was good to see that he is still gorgeous!!!

I ordered my copy of Still Standing Tall and I read it in one sitting. Their story is very inspiring and uplifting. They are living testimonies that if you raise your children to serve God and live for Him , you will truly be blessed. Melvin, Doug, and Henry, you guys keep serving God and your blessings will runneth over.

                                    Book Description

How does a woman survive a concerted campaign to deny her humanity, by the government at the national level and by her foster parents and spouse at the most intimate level? Standing Tall, the biography of Oregon tribal leader Kathryn Jones Harrison, recounts the Grand Rondes' resurgence from the ashes of disastrous federal policies designed to terminate their very existence. The tribe's revival paralleled -- and was propelled by -- Harrison's determination to overcome daunting personal odds.

Harrison's life story puts a human face on the suffering wrought by twentieth-century U.S. Indian policy. Historic and contemporary photographs enliven the text and depict the trauma of forced assimilation. Former Senator Mark Hatfield's foreword places Harrison in the annals of Native leaders, where her generosity of spirit shines through as she seeks to contribute to the communities that threatened to engulf her tribe's homeland.

The Grande Rondes have achieved national renown as the "little tribe that could," and at the forefront for over two decades stood four-foot eleven-inch Kathryn Harrison. Her pragmatic and farsighted leadership through the burgeoning casino economy and the demands of cultural repatriation resonated throughout Indian Country to Capitol Hill and New York's American Museum of Natural History. Yet the company of everyday women -- ancestors, lifelong and newfound friends, and tribal colleagues -- was what sustained her. Harrison's story models the survival skills of adaptability, endurance, patience, and sheer grit coupled with the courage to stand up to confront crusading power.
