Customer Reviews:
It's a good place to start........2001-04-05
Having been to the Monterey area before, I was looking for information about where to stay/dine with our small kids. That guide does not seem to exist. Several restaurants this author mentioned were excellent, but one was a real dog. (Hint: Monterey is not the spot for pizza.) Our saving grace was when we found a copy of a local rag that listed Readers' Choices. Travel books should rely on these for restaurant reviews and also spend more time exploring accomodations.
the best guide.......1999-04-11
The most complete guide from Monterey to San Simeon. If you are heading to the Monterey area this book is a must.

Wonderful artwork from book covers, CD's & commisions.......2000-05-02
This is great sampling of Rodney Matthews fantasy art. It features mostly color artwork but does have some black and white drawings. There is commentary on about half the images.
It features his artwork from all areas including book covers, CD's, movies/TV, prints and commissions. Most of the work is fantasy based. Themes include alien landscapes, space, and mythological creatures.
One of my favorite pieces is "The New Jerusalem," a beautiful fantasy landscape painted with a rainbow of soft colors. Another I really like features a castle in the ocean with dolphin-like creatures in the front.
I found his CD covers featuring numerous exotic creatures fascinating. Finally, I loved his six full-page images featuring many whimsical creatures from several "Alice in Wonderland" books.
This book impressed me by its beauty and creativity!.......1999-08-15
As a fantasy art lover, I simply loved this book by the extreme beauty of its illustrations and the enormous dose of imagination Rodney put into it. Rodney is a magnific illustrator I admire with all my heart!

My 7 year old son loves all of the books in this series. They are well written with a plot that he can follow. He wants to read all of the books in this series.
Dragon Slayers' Academy #8 was my favorite!.......2002-05-24
I like this book because it has my two favorite book characters in it: Wiglaf and Zack from The Zack Files. I wanted to keep reading this book until I finished. This book kept my interest. It was a funny book.

I really loved this book. It was funny and punny. It reminded me a little of "A Kid in King Arthur's Court". My whole family and I have read all 8 of Wiglaf, Eric(a), and Angus' adventures, and we can't wait for number 9!

In this slender volume, Stephen Jay Gould addresses three questions about the millennium with his typical combination of erudition, warmth, and whimsy: As a calendrical event, what is the concept of a millennium and how has its meaning shifted over time? How did the projection of Christ's 1,000-year reign become a secular measure? And when exactly will the millennium begin--January 1, 2000, or January 2, 2001?
"Our urge to know is so great, but our common errors cut so deep. You just gotta love us," he states disarmingly in the preface. "And you gotta view misguided millennial passion as a primary example of our uniqueness and our absurdity--in other words, of our humanity." Gould's own curiosity about time and calendars was triggered by a 1950 issue of Life magazine, which cut the century in half with its evaluation of what had happened and its prediction of things to come, propelling his third-grade mind to the year 2000. In Questioning the Millennium, Gould promises to make no predictions (other than "an orgy of millennial books"); court no millennial epiphanies; and put forth no theories on the collective angst that typically accompanies a century's end. Instead, he answers the millennial questions which, for him, represent the intersection of undeniable reality (i.e., natural fact) and human interpretation. Gould's questions and learned answers, weaving many historical and scientific facts, are a loving inquiry into the human need for order in a vast and teeming universe.
Book Description
In this new edition of
Questioning the Millennium, best-selling author Stephen Jay Gould applies his wit and erudition to one of today's most pressing subjects: the significance of the millennium.
In 1950 at age eight, prompted by an issue of Life magazine marking the century's midpoint, Stephen Jay Gould started thinking about the approaching turn of the millennium. In this beautiful inquiry into time and its milestones, he shares his interest and insights with his readers. Refreshingly reasoned and absorbing, the book asks and answers the three major questions that define the approaching calendrical event. First, what exactly is this concept of a millennium and how has its meaning shifted? How did the name for a future thousand-year reign of Jesus Christ on earth get transferred to the passage of a secular period of a thousand years in current human history? When does the new millennium really begin: January 1, 2000, or January 1, 2001? (Although seemingly trivial, the debate over this issue tells an intriguing story about the cultural history of the twentieth century.) And why must our calendars be so complex, leading to our search for arbitrary regularity, including a fascination with millennia? This revised edition begins with a new and extensive preface on a key subject not treated in the original version.
As always, Gould brings into his essays a wide range of compelling historical and scientific fact, including a brief history of millennial fevers, calendrical traditions, and idiosyncrasies from around the world; the story of a sixth-century monk whose errors in chronology plague us even today; and the heroism of a young autistic man who has developed the extraordinary ability to calculate dates deep into the past and the future.
Ranging over a wide terrain of phenomena--from the arbitrary regularities of human calendars to the unpredictability of nature, from the vagaries of pop culture to the birth of Christ--Stephen Jay Gould holds up the mirror to our millennial passions to reveal our foibles, absurdities, and uniqueness--in other words, our humanity.
Customer Reviews:
"Nothing ages faster than relevance".......2006-07-12
(To quote John Meier) and it is ashame too because this is a wonderful book with lots of interesting bits, sardonic humor and even spelling tips. This book is too much fun to have it drop out of existence because we won't have to worry about the end of time for another thousand years -- or so!
the millennium question unsolved.......2004-07-13
In his lively book Stephen Jay Gould offers a lot of fascinating material as to how the millennium question has been treated with in modern times. But when it comes to the fundamental matter, that is to the establishment of the Chistian numbering of years in the 6th century, Gould commits the all too common mistake to believe he can solve a historical question by common sense. He should have taken his time to look into the sources at hand concerning Dionysius Exiguus and Beda Venerabilis. He would then have detected that the millennium question is of an even more intricate nature than he had imagined, and in particular has something to do with the calculation of the full moon.
A joy to read.......2003-08-14
A joy to read. Gould makes a normally dry and tastless topic, humourous, and enjoyable. I loved the book, and everthing else by Gould I've ever read.
Questioning the Millennium.......2002-02-23
Stephen Jay Gould is entertaining. His work Questioning the Millennium is that questioning, but entertaining. I like Gould as an author and his essays are thought provoking.
This work is no different. Complex calendars and the idea of a millennium and how it effects us as a whole. A whole host of ideas brought to us from Gould's questioning mind.
This is a rather short work of essays, but no less provoking. As with all of Gould's essays... either you like them or despise them, idiosyncrasies and all.
Nonetheless this is entertaining.
A Joyous Quest In Search Of The Millenium.......2001-09-05
Without a doubt, this is one of the thinner volumes in Gould's prolific canon of fine scientific writing. Once more we are blessed with Gould's excellent erudition and prose, looking at the concept of a millenium from religious, historical and scientific perspectives. Although Gould does not give a definitive answer as to when the current millenium begins, he does acknowledge that traditionalists would regard 2001 as the start of the 21st Century and the third millenium of the Christian Era. Anyone interested in a joyous, intriguing look on the notion of a millenium should not miss this slender tome.

Predicting the Future--From a Kid's Point of View.......2005-05-03
Now that the 21st century is well on the way, I've found myself being drawn to books written in the 20th century talking about the 21st century. I find it both amusing and fascinating to see what authors were writing and predicting about "the future." COUNTDOWN TO 2000 is one such book, but written for kids. The book is written kind of as a prediction book/scrapbook combo and includes four major sections.
The first section explains where the word millennium came from, how the modern calendar came to be, and some suggestions on creating a time capsule. The second section is all about predictions. Predictions about the end of the world, robots, space exploration, and the environment. There's also a sections about science fiction and about what life was like around the year 999. The third section is also about predictions, but more on a personal level: the types of food people will eat, the clothes people will wear, how people will shop, the types of jobs, and how people will entertain themselves. The final section of the book is the major scrapbook feature and provides a place where people can record all sorts of events for the next 6 years (1996-2001): height, weight, friends, favorites songs, favorite teachers, favorite movies, etc.
I've always found the majority of children's prediction books to be funny. For example, the clothing section in COUNTDOWN TO 2000 makes the prediction that in the new millennium "space-age-fashion" (sterile white clothing with shiny metal)will be all the rage. This is a prediction that I have read in books for the past twenty years and it has yet to come to pass. Of course, there are some predictions made in the book that have become a reality. Back in 1996 the Internet had just started to enter the public mainstream and the book predicts that the Internet will play a huge role in the future and commands readers to "get prepared--the internet is coming to you." That's a prediction that did become a reality because most kids today can't imagine life without the Internet.
Besides the predictions and some simple games, COUNTDOWN TO 2000 also includes several interesting tidbits of information. For example, in 1957 a "House of the Future" was built at Disneyland that was made totally from plastic. Ten years later when the house was to be demolished for a new exhibit--the wrecking ball bounced off the surface and the house had to be taken apart by hand.
Overall, I enjoyed reading COUNTDOWN TO 2000. Though the book offers some educational and entertainment value, most kids won't have much interest, except those that will be amused by the book's (often hilarious) predictions.

Good story but not great.......1999-04-19
The story Countdown to Y2k was a decent story. The story takes place between Austrailia, Hawaii, Russia and the Mainland U.S. The stories are all possible with regards to y2k such as the power going out, banks not working, but the part I didn't like about the story was the criminal part of it. The story takes on a whole side story regarding a major heist worth $90 million.

Foundations of Embryology...A must for Undergraduates!!!.......2000-08-31
The text of Foundations of Embryology was at times rather advanced and technical but the pictures made the book really worth while! There are thousands of pictures (electron micrographs, light micrographs, and many others including numerous hand-made drawings from Patten himself). Although the majority of the photographs are in black and white, there is a section which contains colored versions of the most important pictures. This book is a must for undergraduate students of biology and professional students who must take courses in embryology.

Book Description
This is the second volume in a series on wide-ranging topics relating to objects in the Antiquities collection of the Getty Museum. It consists of seven articles in English, German, and Italian.
Chronologically ranging from Pier Giovanni Guzzo's presentation of two early sixth-century-B.C. silver cups to a technical analysis by Maya Elston and Jeffrey Maish of a rare late-antique wooden sarcophagus from Egypt. Despoina Tsiafakis discusses a South Italian bronze askos in the shape of a
siren, and Gina Salapata analyzes a pair of South Italian terra-cotta arulae. As a companion text to his publication of an important jewelry assemblage in Greek Gold from Hellenistic Egypt (see p. 13), Michael Pfrommer presents an in-depth scholarly interpretation of the jewelry. Janet Burnett
Grossman has compiled a catalogue of portraits of Alexander the Great in various media from the Getty Museum; and two life-size bronze portraits of delicati, thought to be from Gaul, are the topic of John Pollini's detailed discussion.

The Backyard Orchardist: A Complete Guide to Growing Fruit Trees in the Home Garden
ASIN: 1843306786 |
Book Description
Beautifully illustrated and encyclopedic in scope, this is the only guide you’ll ever need to become a pruning expert. It includes a vast wealth of information on trimming all types of plant life, from shrubs, trees, climbers and hedges to conifers, roses and fruit-bearing vegetation. You’ll also benefit from the special sections on working with arches, tunnels and topiary.
Customer Reviews:
Not at all useful.......2004-03-29
I purchased this book to learn about how to prune my fruit trees. While I have an upright peach, this book tells how to train a peach tree as an espalier. Even those directions were not as good as the ones in The Complete Book of Topiary by Barbara Gallup and Deborah Reich. I also have an upright apple tree. He only talks about how to prune a bush apple. I have never heard of a bush apple. The book costs $9.95 and would cost $3.99 plus postage to return.

useful, timely, well-researched, skillfully written.......1999-04-01
This analysis of injustice in the world system is important from sociological and political perspectives, but also impacts the ways in which real people live and act in the world. The ideas advanced in this text are particularly relevant in light of recent events (such as the war in Kosovo and terrorism in east Africa), and will be increasingly important as the world enters the coming millennium.
This book is at the cutting edge of global studies........1998-06-17
This book is at the cutting edge of alternatives to global, corporate, business culture. It's a serious analysis of how and why people are put on the margins of life, especially people who would be at the center of a just world. The chapters include straightforward issues of justice, including research on the Zapatistas in Chiapas, jurisprudence in North American, freedom and autonomy in Africa, fairness in Latin America, terrorism in the Middle East and Italy, and a thoughtful mix of diverse approaches to scholarship.

Book Description
Walker Evans (1903-1975) ranks with Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, and Paul Strand as one of America's greatest photographers. When originally published in 1994, Walker Evans: The Hungry Eye was the first book to survey every significant aspect of the artist's oeuvre. This reduced-format version, identical in content to the previous volume, includes 300 beautiful duotone photographs.
Evans was largely self-educated and began photographing regularly in 1927, using a small hand-held camera. He specialized in the life of the street-carefully observed views of American architecture, the roadside, and the people who lived in the nation's cities, towns, and villages. Beginning with Evans's early abstractions, continuing through his three-year involvement with the Farm Security Administration and his breakthrough exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and concluding with the artist's experimentation with color late in his life, Walker Evans: The Hungry Eye remains the most complete and authoritative view of this American photographic master. AUTHOR BIO: Gilles Mora has been editor-in-chief of Cahiers de la Photographie since 1981. He has written essays for two collections of Walker Evans material. John T. Hill, a friend and colleague of Evans and the executor of his estate, has coedited three book collections of the photographer's work.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2005-08-18
This book is very informative of Walker Evans. It shows a wide variety of his work form portraiture to architecture, from the streets of New York to exotic places. It not only shows the works of art but also shows short blurbs about the place he was at and what was happening in his life; like why he was there and what he wanted out of the photo shoot.
The part I like best about this book is that it references whose work he was admiring at the time. It also references his feelings, whether it was something he hated or something that was inspiring him. The print of the book is also very representational. It shows in great detail the contrast and depth of the works of art. I give the book 5 stars. I really enjoyed reading the book.

Not His Best Work.......2006-05-21
His short story, TIME FOR ME which is found in the Borderlands 5 anthology impressed me so much that I went out and bought this puppy.
Can't honestly say this did the same for me. The prose is average, and even as a "character study" this was pretty average. The suspense is minimal, and the reader's overall affair with the characters will more than likely leave a bit to be desired.
Still, it was a fairly entertaing read, but I went in with higher expectations. The writer seems to have great insights into female characters, but didn't really develop them as much as I know he could have.
Just my 2 cents...
This one isn't your everyday, run-of-the-mill revenge story.......2005-02-28
The first of the "Eyes" Series, Hungry Eyes, is a noteworthy effort. Hoffman digs deeply into the minds of his characters and, whether or not you agree with their actions or not, they're still interesting. You don't always have to agree with the actions of the protagonist(s) to enjoy a book. These characters are not stereotypical, they are purely three dimensional, unusual, and fascinating.
The suspense really isn't that strong, it's not THAT type of thriller. Everything's intriguing though, there's lots of action going down, and the subject matter hasn't been touched upon in this way that much. Much of it is soaked with mental thoughts and ambitions, a very character driven story.
Hoffman has a powerful voice that should be listened to.
A NOVEL THAT CRACKLES WITH SUSPENSE!!!.......2001-08-21
The first book in the "Eyes" series by Barry Hoffman is HUNGRY EYES. This is the story of Shara Farris (a.k.a. Renee Barrows) who was kidnapped by a neighbor, Edward Costanzo, when she was ten-years-old. Costanzo supposedly held Renee prisoner in an isolated cabin for six long days, during which time she was tortured so that the facial expressions of her torment could be photographed. When Costanzo was finally caught and Renee was freed, he ardently denied doing anything other than taking her to the cabin. He went to jail and Renee was placed with foster parents for her protection. Months later, though everything appeared to be going okay, something traumatic happened to Renee that forced her to make a vital decision regarding her life. She decided to leave her foster home by faking a suicide and then risking the dangers of living on the streets of Philadelphia as a homeless person. Everyone soon thought she was dead, and Renee felt safer than she had in years. Thirteen years have now passed, and Renee calls herself Shara Farris. The citizens of Philadelphia, however, know her as the Vigilante...a person who's been killing sexual predators left and right. There's only one person in the city, Deidre Caffrey, who actually knows the Vigilante's true identity. Deidre--a reporter who interviewed and then befriended Renee after the kidnapping--is now working for the Mayor's office and has been assigned to the Task Force that is hunting the Vigilante. When she sees the words "NO MORE HUNGRY EYES" written in lipstick on the bedroom mirror of one of the murdered predators, Deidre immediately knows whom the killer is. Though she has a hard time accepting it at first, it isn't long before she realizes that Renee is indeed alive and still haunted by the hungry eyes of the man who tortured her as a child. Deidre understands that Renee is a killer, but has no intention of turning her in. Instead, she intends on tracking Renee down and openly confronting her, hopefully before she kills again. Renee knows that Deidre is coming after her. The real question is what are Renee's intentions as she carefully lures Deidre into her tangled web by dropping clues for the ex-reporter to follow? Does our killer have a hidden agenda; and, if so, what is it? I found HUNGRY EYES to be an excellent first novel by a new author who has since proven his talent with a track record of three additional bestsellers. The story is skillfully woven with flashbacks to Renee's life as a child, her eventual kidnapping, and how Deidre first met her and developed a bond that survived the ravages of time. Both women feel an extremely strong connection to one another. Renee sees Deidre as a big sister who sincerely cares about her, and Deidre views the younger woman as someone who has never experienced love, nor been able to trust the majority of people in her life. In the creation of Renee and Deidre, Mr. Hoffman clearly demonstrates his skill and imagination at writing vivid females characters that are richly textured with complex personalities and who have suffered; yet, still manage to carry on. Not to be forgotten are the secondary characters that shine with their own uniqueness. Loretta Barrows, the mother of Renee, is realistically portrayed as a hard woman with little compassion, except for herself. The brother of Renee comes off as a real piece of slime that deserves exactly what he gets and none too soon. Jonas, Deidre's father-in-law, reminded me a lot of the actor Dennis Farina: strong, determined, realistic, and caring. The author also knows how to weave an intricately layered plot, structured with increasing levels of suspense, that quickly draws the reader in and propels him down a meandering path filled with twists and turns and subtle inclinations that something isn't quite right. This is a master craftsman at work. Barry Hoffman knows the meaning and power of the written word; but, even more so, he knows how to spin a good yarn. Not only do I look forward to reading the rest of his books, I can see that this gifted writer has a long and prosperous career ahead of him. Now, it's time to pick up a copy of EYES OF PREY and see how the rest of the series continues.
Leaves one unfulfilled........2001-08-05
HUNGRY EYES is a so-called thriller that is really more of a character study. Although there are a couple twists much later on, there's no mystery or suspense. And like Dean Koontz, Barry Hoffman lacks any kind of flair in his writing. The prose is often clunky and reads awkwardly. This is a short novel, but tedious to get through. Remniscent of the trashy pulp novels of yore.
Light-weight puffery.......2001-07-03
This book was dissapointing; from some of the reviews I have read, I expected a far better book.

Britpop!: Cool Britannia and the Spectacular Demise of English Rock
ASIN: 0753506459 |
Book Description
Critically acclaimed as one of the best music books of all time, this is the true, inside story of Creation Records - and of the the last twenty years of British music. Late in 1999, Alan McGee announced that he was to sell his record label - Creation Records. The decision brought to an end an extraordinary chapter in British rock history. The Creation Records Story is in equal parts black comedy, tragedy, farce and urban myth, laced with large, large helpings of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. It's the tale of how a Scottish train driver left his job in 1980 and moved to London to start a record label. Since then he has developed - and shaken - a spectular drug habit, suffered a nervous breakdown, become a millionaire and, famously, visited 10 Downing Street. He's also, more importantly, discovered and nutured fantastical, iconic rock bands...such as Oasis and Primal Scream.David Cavanagh is the UK's most respected music journalist, and this book is a must for anyone interested in the music industry over the last two decades.
Customer Reviews:
a great butt, READ.......2006-11-01
1. yes, this is a long book. it should be even longer, but i am quite sure that's not possible. this book is extremely fascinating. what other book will lend insight into orange juice, television personalities, c86, acid house, shoegaze, and britpop all in one fell swoop? there is nothing else, my friend. so read up and wish there was more.
2. yes, my bloody valentine are nearly treated with disdain by the writer. but that's because they are perhaps the most overhyped 'wives-tale-of-a-band' ever to emerge from popular music in that particular era. it was slim pickins' in the music press at that time and they chose to bestow kevin sheilds with some genius-dom. i'm agreeable in some respects, but more agreeable with the author if he had taken a more slight perspective on the career of my bloody valentine. that is not to say that the writer treats MBV lightly or even has a negative word to say about MBV. one could only argue that they are treated subjectively in the context of what was happening at the time. and this excludes the post-"Loveless" jerking off that was heavily mythologized by more than a handful of publicists and journalists. these things being said, my bloody valentine were a fine, misunderstood group. but ultimately a small fragment of the creation records story. an amazing amazing story that has to be read to be believed.
3. this may be, in my humble opinion, the finest read on contemporary rock (to generalize it) music you can get. i've read "rip it up", "rock and the pop narcotic" (which i found particularly nauseating), "mystery train", "psychotic recations and carburetor dung" and other sorts of books. although this is clearly more of a specific biography of a particular part of music history, i found it exceptionally more insightful than most other books due to the superb writing.
4. john paffenbarger is some my bloody valentine fanatic white-guy moron who bought the book after a good decade of hearing people praise MBV like they were the bee's knees. in reality he must have piss poor taste considering he had no commentary to lend to the much more interesting bands in the book such as the pastels, orange juice, jesus and mary chain, TVPs, etc. john paffenbarger is totally gay and is an excellent reason computers and internet connections should not be sold to just anyone.
A great read, but...........2004-12-24
Critically acclaimed account of the (in)famous UK record label Creation Records. The book tells the story of flamboyant company founder Alan McGee and the many great bands that recorded for the label, such as the Jesus and Mary Chain, the House of Love, My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Primal Scream and Oasis. It's incredibly comprehensive, including a wealth of behind the scenes material and colorful anectdotes.
That said, the book has some shortcomings. First, it's too long - 750 pages plus. At least 25 to 30% of the book could have been cut with little effect. More important, from the perspective of a US reader, is that the book is written in the style of a typical UK music critic, more concerned with artist sales and fashion than the quality of the music in question. The "prize" of the book's subtitle, for example, is Oasis - A highly derivative band which had huge success in the UK, but is already largely forgotten in the US.
On the flip side, Kevin Shields and My Bloody Valentine are treated almost with disdain by the author. While it is true they caused immense financial problems for Creation, their amazingly original Loveless album is now generally regarded as a masterpiece on par with Sgt. Pepper and Pet Sounds - And the principal legacy of Creation Records. The author completely misses this. Virtually all of the discussion of MBV is of their recording and financial difficulties. Even when he gives brief praise to the album upon its release, the author can hardly complete a sentence about it without repeating the band's problems.
Nevertheless, for US fans of Creation bands, the book is practically the only authoritative source on many of the lesser publicized bands, such as The House of Love, Ride, Slowdive, Swervedriver, Teenage Fanclub and the like. The fact that so many great bands were on one label is remarkable, and this is its story, in exhaustive detail.

THE EYE OF THE TIGER
The deep. The deadly. The damned...
For a thousand years, an unimaginable treasure has rested on the bottom of the Indian Ocean, hidden by swift blue currents, guarded by deadly coral reefs, and even deadlier school of man-eating great white sharks. Harry Fletcher, a former soldier turned fisherman, is now being pulled into a murderous mystery by men willing to kill and a beautiful woman willing to lie for what rests far beneath the sea. Now, Harry has no choice but to enter full bore into an international battle to raise an extraordinary object from the deep. Because possessing this treasure isn't just about getting rich--it's about staying alive...
HUNGRY AS THE SEA
Wilbur Smith sets his vividly realistic novels on the razor's edge between human courage and nature's wrath. In Hungry As The Sea, this master storyteller takes us to the frigid South Atlantic, where one man fights for his life-- and for redemption.
Nicholas Berg is steaming out of Cape Town aboard the salvage tug Warlock. Once Berg ruled an ocean-going empire. Now, his future has come down to a powerful boat and a daring rescue mission. One of his former ships is being lashed against the cliffs of Cape Alarm, surrounded by deadly icebergs and survivors clinging to their boats. Berg has gambled everything on reaching the Golden Adventurer before a competitor and a violent storm-- to win a fortune in salvage fees. But if Nick Berg succeeds, and climbs back into the international shipping game, that's when the real danger will begin...
From the power of a relentless ocean to the hunger of men to survive upon her, this is a towering novel of adventure, love and the daring of the human soul.

Avon Books Fantasy Collection.......2007-06-28
In 1949, Avon Books released a Fantasy Collection (edited anonymously by Donald A. Wollheim) titled "The Girl with the Hungry Eyes". It is an anthology of six stories never published before which include fantasy, horror, and science fiction as follows:
"The Girl with the Hungry Eyes" by Fritz Leiber, Jr., a short story which is probably best categorized as fiction. It is the story of a photographer whose business picks up once he an unusual model gets him to take pictures of her. Soon she is running the show, and he becomes more and more convinced that there is something sinister going on. This is probably the best story of the collection, which is why it is the title story.
"Venus and the Seven Sexes" by William Tenn (a.k.a. Philip Klass) is a novelette told from the point of view of the Plooch, a race with seven sexes, and their interaction with a human who they treat almost in a god-like way, but who in fact is a Hollywood director. It is a humorous story, with obvious science fiction and fantasy elements.
"Mrs. Manifold" by Stephen Grendon (a.k.a. August Derleth) is a short horror story told by Mr. Robinson, a man hired to be the clerk at Mrs. Manifold's Sailor's Rest inn. It is not a great horror story by any means, as it takes a little too long to setup, and the ending leaves something to be desired, but there are worse.
"Daydream" by P. Schuyler Miller is an unusual story of revenge and justice. In this story, James Payson is bullied by his cousin Charles Galt while growing up, when he creates a man (and cat) in his mind to help him survive. Years later, when James has established a successful business, Charles again tries to bully James, and runs into the power of James' mind.
"Maturity Night" by Frank Belknap Long is a short story, in the science fiction genre. It is a coming of age story set in a post apocalypse future where man has lost the secrets of technology and science, and reveres men of the past as "Mighty Men". Jal Strall is sent to spend a night in an old museum, where he is instructed to not touch anything and where he is supposed to get visions of the Mighty Men of the past. Instead he decides to try to run one of the machines, a time machine which takes him back in time.
"Come into My Parlor" by Manly Wade Wellman is a horror short story. In this story, the narrator is interested in plants which eat insects, and ignores the advice of his friend Henry about entering the Gardinel Swamp where large specimens are said to be. It is a rather predictable story with a predictable result.
This is a decent anthology, but certainly not as good as many others. It is also difficult to find, but if you do run across a copy, you could do much worse.
